Love, Language, And Linear Algebra: Linguistic Modeling Of Personality And Mate Preference, Caleb Z. Marshall, Erin M. Buchanan, Melissa Duncan Fallone
Love, Language, And Linear Algebra: Linguistic Modeling Of Personality And Mate Preference, Caleb Z. Marshall, Erin M. Buchanan, Melissa Duncan Fallone
Modern Psychological Studies
This study utilized Latent Semantic Analysis to determine whether similarities in personality predicted similarities in responses to a romantic writing prompt (Landauer & Dumais, 1997). From participants’ writing samples, we calculated thematic cosines (a measure of relatedness) between each male and female participant. Participants also completed the Big Five Personality Questionnaire Short Form (Morizet, 2014). Extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness were related to cosines, which suggested small-medium relationships from personality traits to written responses. This relationship was consistent with previous studies; therefore, Latent Semantic Analysis may be useful in quantifying mate preference, especially when alongside traditional survey methods. We conclude with …
Size Matters: The Values Behind Basque Food, Font And Semiotics, Kerri Lesh
Size Matters: The Values Behind Basque Food, Font And Semiotics, Kerri Lesh
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
Text production indexes a set of values as semiotics are utilized to market gastronomic products. These values are referenced through the language used, various font styles and sizes, and the food being promoted. The Basque Country has become a “Culinary nation,” world-renowned for its unique culture and gastronomy. This paper looks at how semiotics are used to create value in marketing locally-made wine and cider. A ubiquitously seen Basque font is used for both cider and wine to reference traditional components of Basque culture, while font size on Rioja Alavesa wine labels stresses the distinction between neighboring regions. The use …
The Adverse Effects Of Stereotyping And Bias On Health In Low Socioeconomic Communities, Stephanie Jurado
The Adverse Effects Of Stereotyping And Bias On Health In Low Socioeconomic Communities, Stephanie Jurado
Graduate Student Independent Studies
Studies have shown that low socioeconomic status negatively affects health due to factors such as unstable access to secure environments, full-coverage healthcare, and quality of education. Members of these communities face further health adversities when confronting healthcare staff who are blind to these challenges, and more, that they experience. Several studies examined in this paper looked specifically at the intersects of low socioeconomic status and how they negatively affected the healthcare experience of individuals of these communities. Others demonstrate how having healthcare staff be knowledgeable of these adverse effects can lead to positive changes in the health of these community …

The strategy that microbial decomposers take with respect to using substrate for growth versus maintenance is one essential biological determinant of the propensity of carbon to remain in soil. To quantify the environmental sensitivity of this key physiological trade-off, we characterized the carbon use efficiency (CUE) of 23 soil bacterial isolates across seven phyla at three temperatures and with up to four substrates. Temperature altered CUE in both an isolate-specific manner and a substrate-specific manner. We searched for genes correlated with the temperature sensitivity of CUE on glucose and deemed those functional genes which were similarly correlated with CUE on …
Gloria Anzaldúa’S Mexican Genealogy: From Pelados And Pachucos To New Mestizas, Mariana Alessandri, Alexander Stehn
Gloria Anzaldúa’S Mexican Genealogy: From Pelados And Pachucos To New Mestizas, Mariana Alessandri, Alexander Stehn
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This essay examines Gloria Anzaldúa’s critical appropriation of two Mexican philosophers in the writing of Borderlands/La Frontera: Samuel Ramos and Octavio Paz. We argue that although neither of these authors is cited in her seminal work, Anzaldúa had them both in mind through the writing process and that their ideas are present in the text itself. Through a genealogical reading of Borderlands/La Frontera, and aided by archival research, we demonstrate how Anzaldúa’s philosophical vision of the “new mestiza” is a critical continuation of the broader tradition known as la filosofía de lo mexicano, which flourished during a golden age of …
Analysis Of Elementary School English Teachers’ Professional Dialogue As Their Professional Development, Chin-Wen Chien
Analysis Of Elementary School English Teachers’ Professional Dialogue As Their Professional Development, Chin-Wen Chien
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This qualitative study analyzed the professional dialogue among 67 English teachers at seven elementary schools in New Taipei City in Taiwan. Based on the analysis of the documentation, observation, and interviews, the study has two major findings. First, the knowledge and skills covered in the professional dialogues of English teachers concerned planning, implementing, and managing instruction. Second, English teachers regarded their professional dialogues as effective and goal-oriented. In order to make professional dialogues into job-embedded professional development for English teachers, they must be goal-oriented and carried out in an environment of care and trust. Moreover, professional dialogue can take the …
Remembering ‘The English’ In Four ‘Memory Moment’ Portraits: Navigating Anti-Japanese Discrimination And Postcolonial Ambiguity In Mid-Twentieth Century Alberta, Canada, Darren J. Aoki
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article explores anti-Japanese racial discrimination in the mid-twentieth century as it was experienced in everyday life between the 1940s to 1960s. Drawing on oral history interviews with nisei (“second generation”) individuals, it presents four ‘memory moment’ portraits to consider the transformation of anti-Japanese discrimination, whose colonial mechanisms during the Second World War gave way to make employment, education – and later, intimate – opportunities commonplace, even as “micro-aggressive” forms of racism powerfully if subtly continued. Central to understanding how remembering narrators perceived discrimination is “The English.” Emergent from memories of painful engagements with real individuals, ‘The English” were a …

Bandera: (Re)Building Ukrainian National History, Aaron R. Wolf
Of Life and History
This paper attempts to give an overview of the life of Ukrainian nationalist Stepan Bandera and his historical influence in the current political battles in Ukraine over national identity. This paper looks at the different methods that both Ukrainian and Russian media sources have used to paint Ukrainian nationalism in the wake of the Maidan Revolution in 2014 as either a positive force for reinforcing Ukrainian national identity and moving the country closer to the West, or a negative one that connects the current government and far-right political parties to the Ukrainian nationalists of Stepan Bandera who collaborated with the …

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence Capabilities To Improve Cybersecurity, Sherali Zeadally, Erwin Adi, Zubair Baig, Imran A. Khan
Information Science Faculty Publications
Cybersecurity is a fast-evolving discipline that is always in the news over the last decade, as the number of threats rises and cybercriminals constantly endeavor to stay a step ahead of law enforcement. Over the years, although the original motives for carrying out cyberattacks largely remain unchanged, cybercriminals have become increasingly sophisticated with their techniques. Traditional cybersecurity solutions are becoming inadequate at detecting and mitigating emerging cyberattacks. Advances in cryptographic and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques (in particular, machine learning and deep learning) show promise in enabling cybersecurity experts to counter the ever-evolving threat posed by adversaries. Here, we explore AI's …
Learning To Teach In Diverse Schools: Two Approaches To Teacher Education, Ashlee B. Anderson, Brittany A. Aronson
Learning To Teach In Diverse Schools: Two Approaches To Teacher Education, Ashlee B. Anderson, Brittany A. Aronson
The Qualitative Report
With this paper, we explore two approaches to teacher education, paying attention to how teachers are prepared to work in diverse school settings in a time of increasingly competitive neoliberal, market-based reform. These two approaches reflect completion of a traditional teacher education program and completion of Teach for America (TFA). The findings are based on two independent interview studies that are informed by the researchers’ joint commitments to postcritical ethnography, which consider issues associated with positionality, reflexivity, objectivity, and representation. The first interview study engaged teachers who graduated from a traditional teacher education program, as well as two participants with …
Using Physical Objects As A Portal To Reveal Academic Subject Identity And Thought, Kendall Richards, Nick Pilcher
Using Physical Objects As A Portal To Reveal Academic Subject Identity And Thought, Kendall Richards, Nick Pilcher
The Qualitative Report
We are lecturers who help students studying subjects that use word-based writing, non-word based writing such as Mathematics, and non-text based language such as visual semiotics. To access examples of such language with subject lecturers we have found traditional interviews or focus groups ineffective, and realised that in these, although lecturers could talk about key psychological elements of the language, they had no focus to produce any examples of it. However, we suspected that providing a physical object to describe and discuss would create a context for lecturers to produce the language. Thus, we gave a brightly coloured teapot to …

Hanson, Camila Hernandez, Tirzah Le Feber, Sonia Medina, Stephanie Old Bucher, Eva I. Rivera, Ione Rodriguez, Elizabeth Vela, Brandi Velasco, Jackolyn Le Feber
The Qualitative Report
From a position of academic activism, we critique the longstanding dominance del production of knowledge that solely implicates fidelity to Eurocentric methodological technologies en qualitative research. Influenced by an Andean decolonial perspective, en Spanglish we problematize métodos of analysis as the dominant research practice, whereby las stories o relatos result en su appropriation, captivity and gentrification, first by researchers’ authorship and later by the publishing industry copyrights. We highlight the racializing and capitalist colonial/modern Eurocentric agenda del current market of knowledge production that displaces to la periphery all knowledge o relatos that do not subscribe to Euro-US American methodological parameters …

USF OER Faculty Grant Projects
This report compiles student insight of particular Open Educational Resources (OER) incorporated into a Rhetoric and Language (R&L) course pilot. Using OER textbooks not only reduced costs for students, but also encouraged students to take ownership in the text assessment process. The views expressed by students through reading reflections, class discussions, and survey feedback created ample information for deciding whether particular texts or readings were a good fit for the course moving forward. While the final decisions around whether to include these texts in future courses, or in a textbook designed specifically for this upper division course, remain to be …

Wildlife Emotions: Animal Rights As Examined Through A Cognitivist Lens, Kristy Schultz
Wildlife Emotions: Animal Rights As Examined Through A Cognitivist Lens, Kristy Schultz
The Hilltop Review
The aim of this article is to revisit and redefine the scope of a Kantian rights-based theory to include non-human animals. Generally, rights-based theories are predicated on a Kantian deontology that excludes all but rational subjects from possessing of basic rights. Historically, non-human animals—once thought to act on impulse and desire alone—have been excluded from rights-based considerations. However, more recent literature from emotions theorist Martha Nussbaum suggests an alternative picture for non-human animals. Cognitivist theories like Nussbaum’s, alongside intensive scientific research, support the notion that non-human animals show signs of intentionality and possess the capacity to emote. If Nussbaum’s theory …

Transitional Portraits: Syrian Immigrants Of The North American Mahjar In 'Abd Al-Masih Haddad's Prose, Benjamin Smith
Transitional Portraits: Syrian Immigrants Of The North American Mahjar In 'Abd Al-Masih Haddad's Prose, Benjamin Smith
Arabic Faculty Works
This article argues that the 1921 collection of diasporic short stories Hikayat al-mahjar, written by ‘Abd al-Masih Haddad, makes a unique and notable contribution to mahjar literature by mobilizing formal literary techniques and innovative thematic content to capture a Syrian immigrant community engaged in a transitional moment in America. This paper situates Haddad (best known as the founder of the biweekly Arabic newspaper al-Saʼih, and a founding member of the literary society al-Rābiṭa al-qalamiyya) among his literary peers and provides an analysis of Hikayat al-mahjar that demonstrates the work’s points of convergence and divergence from the literary norms of the …
An Investigation Of Suffering Through The Examination Of The Lived Experiences Of Hospice Patients, Junko M. Mills
An Investigation Of Suffering Through The Examination Of The Lived Experiences Of Hospice Patients, Junko M. Mills
Dissertations
Although there is a historical and philosophical link between nursing and the suffering of people, a review of literature revealed that there are only a limited number of articles treating suffering conceptually or analytically, and the experience of suffering is under-analyzed. Further, a review of literature also revealed that the lived experiences of hospice patients, which were identified to be an appropriate place to begin an investigation of suffering, have not been well investigated. Accordingly, the two aims of this study were to describe the lived experiences of hospice patients, and to understand what their experiences can inform us about …

This study responds to scholarship that has examined “folk concepts” of (non)nativeness through the lens of imagined ideals of the native speaker, by proposing a framework that integrates both ideals and habits. We operationalize these concepts by drawing from the theoretical notions of chronotope, scale, and habitus. Using data from interviews with Central Asian transnational migrants, we demonstrate how attending to both the habitual and idealized aspects of speakers’ metalinguistic commentary offers a more holistic approach to the study of multilingual repertoires and speakers’ social positionings in relationship to (non)nativeness. Our findings demonstrate how identification as a “(non)native” speaker may …

Alcohol isn't just a mind-altering drink: It has been a prime mover of human culture from the beginning, fueling the development of arts, language, and religion."' Alcohol production and consumption can be traced to civilizations dating back thousands of years all around the world, and it has become so essential to our society that experts have gone on to joke that humans should be called "Homo imbibens." Within the current alcohol industry, two essential qualities that are becoming more common are creativity and variety.
Alcohol has become a defining aspect of human culture and our sense of society. It has …
