Imagining Money, J.G. Allen Feb 2020

Imagining Money, J.G. Allen

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

John Clarke presents the theme of this volume by asking why we might speak of “imagined economies”. It is, he answers, “to interrupt the apparent ubiquity of economies”, to provide a moment for “a pause for thought”. In this chapter, I explore the role that imagination plays in the creation and maintenance of a money system. Money is important to the existence and functioning of an economy.1 Money, too, seems ubiquitous and naturally-occurring, so I want to pause and consider why it is that we might have money and what exactly it is doing. Different objects have served as money, …

Evaluation Of Parent- And Speech-Language Pathologist–Delivered Multiple Oppositions Intervention For Children With Phonological Impairment: A Multiple-Baseline Design Study, Eleanor Sugden, Elise Baker, A. Lynn Williams, Natalie Munro, Carol M. Trivette Feb 2020

Evaluation Of Parent- And Speech-Language Pathologist–Delivered Multiple Oppositions Intervention For Children With Phonological Impairment: A Multiple-Baseline Design Study, Eleanor Sugden, Elise Baker, A. Lynn Williams, Natalie Munro, Carol M. Trivette

ETSU Faculty Works

Purpose: Evidence for the multiple oppositions intervention approach indicates it should be delivered 3 times weekly; however, this high dose frequency is not provided by many speech-language pathologists worldwide. This study investigated whether parents could be involved in delivering phonological intervention to fulfill this intensity shortfall. Method: Five children with moderate-to-severe phonological impairment aged 3;3–5;11 (years;months) and 1 of their parents participated in this study using a multiplebaseline across participants design. Participants attended one 60-min clinic-based session per week for 8 weeks, and parents completed home practice 2 times per week over this period after receiving training. Parents also attended …

On-The-Job Information Literacy: A Case Study Of Student Employees At Purdue University Archives And Special Collections, Tracy Grimm, Neal Harmeyer

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This chapter presents Purdue Archives and Special Collections as a case study in growing an organizational culture committed to teaching information literacy parallel to classroom learning through student worker experiential learning. While student employment or internships may not traditionally be considered co-curricular activities, Purdue University Archives and Special Collections provides an environment not only for students to gain pre-professional experience but also expertise, confidence, and competence in information; for many students, this preparation has resulted in careers in museums, archives, libraries, and cultural heritage institutions. The result is a new approach to student employment: one designed to establish an environment …

Nimble Tongues: Studies In Literary Translingualism, Steven G. Kellman Feb 2020

Nimble Tongues: Studies In Literary Translingualism, Steven G. Kellman

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Nimble Tongues is a collection of essays that continues Steven G. Kellman's work in the fertile field of translingualism, focusing on the phenomenon of switching languages. A series of investigations and reflections rather than a single thesis, the collection is perhaps more akin in its aims—if not accomplishment—to George Steiner’s Extraterritorial: Papers on Literature and the Language Revolution or Umberto Eco’s Travels in Hyperreality.

Topics covered include the significance of translingualism; translation and its challenges; immigrant memoirs; the autobiographies that Ariel Dorfman wrote in English and Spanish, respectively; the only feature film ever made in Esperanto; Francesca Marciano, an Italian …

Multi-Level Head-Wise Match And Aggregation In Transformer For Textual Sequence Matching, Shuohang Wang, Yunshi Lan, Yi Tay, Jing Jiang, Jingjing Liu Feb 2020

Multi-Level Head-Wise Match And Aggregation In Transformer For Textual Sequence Matching, Shuohang Wang, Yunshi Lan, Yi Tay, Jing Jiang, Jingjing Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Transformer has been successfully applied to many natural language processing tasks. However, for textual sequence matching, simple matching between the representation of a pair of sequences might bring in unnecessary noise. In this paper, we propose a new approach to sequence pair matching with Transformer, by learning head-wise matching representations on multiple levels. Experiments show that our proposed approach can achieve new state-of-the-art performance on multiple tasks that rely only on pre-computed sequence-vectorrepresentation, such as SNLI, MNLI-match, MNLI-mismatch, QQP, and SQuAD-binary

Distinguishing Similar Design Pattern Instances Through Temporal Behavior Analysis, Renhao Xiong, David Lo, Bixin Li Feb 2020

Distinguishing Similar Design Pattern Instances Through Temporal Behavior Analysis, Renhao Xiong, David Lo, Bixin Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Design patterns (DPs) encapsulate valuable design knowledge of object-oriented systems. Detecting DP instances helps to reveal the underlying rationale, thus facilitates the maintenance of legacy code. Resulting from the internal similarity of DPs, implementation variants, and missing roles, approaches based on static analysis are unable to well identify structurally similar instances. Existing approaches further employ dynamic techniques to test the runtime behaviors of candidate instances. Automatically verifying the runtime behaviors of DP instances is a challenging task in multiple aspects. This paper presents an approach to improve the verification process of existing approaches. To exercise the runtime behaviors of DP …

The Visual Representation Of Dual Language Education, Theresa Catalano Feb 2020

The Visual Representation Of Dual Language Education, Theresa Catalano

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Despite well documented benefits of dual language (DL) programs which deliver educational content in two languages, there are still few DL programs in the United States. As such, there is a need to understand how to effectively persuade more states/districts to adopt the programs. In addition, more critical research is needed that focuses on how the programs are represented visually, as well as how this visual representation reflects wider discourses about DL education that could impede the programs from reaching those who need them most. In this article, the author explores ideologies behind DL program discourse by looking at photojournalism …

Language And Literacy Practices Of Bilingual Education Preservice Teachers At A Hispanic-Serving College Of Education, Elena M. Venegas, Veronica L. Estrada, Janine Schall, Leticia De Leon

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This chapter focuses on an exploratory study of the language and literacy practices of undergraduate students within our Hispanic-Serving College of Education (HSCOE). HSCOEs must first understand and approach the language and literacy practices of bilingual education preservice teachers from an asset-based perspective. Language and literacy practices shape people’s identities and how they exist in the world. Language and literacy development also have an essential role in adult success since reading allows people to access, analyze, synthesize, and use knowledge to understand the world and learn new things. Much of the literature related to language and literacy practices at the …

As a borderlands’ institution, we are developing a mission and vision for our HSI identity in the college of education, as well as in our university. We envision pedagogical practices embedded in our teacher preparation that are context specific to our bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural community; one that not only prepares PTs to effectively teach all students, but also promotes strong values for equity and social justice. For our Latinx PTs, this aim has two purposes: 1) to tailor our educational practices capitalizing on their unique strengths and addressing possible challenges in their professional development, and 2) preparing them to …

The Hispanic-Serving College Of Education Special Interest Research Group Initiative: Building A Community Around A Question, Janine M. Schall, Patricia Alvarez Mchatton, Eugenio Longoria Sáenz

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This chapter aims to establish Hispanic-Serving Institution Special Interest Research Group (HSI SIRG) initiative as one way to become consciously skilled at addressing the question of what it means to be an Hispanic-Serving College of Education. While a fundamental component of the SIRG initiative was the need for accountability, the opportunity to provide various kinds of support was equally important. One common issue was overambitious research plans, with SIRGs proposing projects that would realistically take several years to complete. Other SIRGs realized that their proposed projects only shallowly addressed the focus of the SIRG initiative and more tightly aligned their …

G. Furman furthered R. J. Starratt’s work on ethical leadership, which called for an ethic of care, an ethic of justice, and an ethic of critique as necessary for authentic leadership in PK-12 settings. While essential, she found them insufficient in that they focused on the individual. The Hispanic-Serving College of Education community as a whole includes all our students, faculty, and staff, but people also belong to communities in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) beyond the university. Transforming the education of Latinx students has importance beyond the RGV. Along with the moral imperative of providing all students with a …

The Idea Of A National Church In The Ukrainian Intellectual Discourse, Natalia Ishchuk, Oleksandr Sagan Feb 2020

The Idea Of A National Church In The Ukrainian Intellectual Discourse, Natalia Ishchuk, Oleksandr Sagan

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The reception of the idea of a national church in the Ukrainian intellectual environment in the context of current socio-political events in the country is examined here. Among the most influential Ukrainian religious scholars, there is a dominant idea that the formation of a national church is a part of the state formation and security of the country. They opposed historical distortions of this idea, as it occurs in case of ethnophyletism—domination of the national over the ecclesiastical, and etatism—the domination of the state, imperial (in the form of the Orthodox empire) over the ecclesiastical. Signs of these distortions are …

The Ielts Exam And Cut-Off Decisions: One University's Mistake, Ann E. Roemer Feb 2020

The Ielts Exam And Cut-Off Decisions: One University's Mistake, Ann E. Roemer

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

College and university admissions officers are the gatekeepers who decide which individuals may join the "country club" of higher education. As such, the decisions they make have a significant impact on the lives of individuals, especially those who are willing to travel across the globe and risk living in an unfamiliar country in order to receive a postsecondary education. Making decisions about international students and their credentials is much more complicated than evaluating the applications of U.S. students. Part of this complicated process involves decisions regarding English language proficiency and cut-off scores for exams such as the Test of English …

Putting The "Notice" Back Into Pleading, Robin J. Effron Feb 2020

Putting The "Notice" Back Into Pleading, Robin J. Effron

Cardozo Law Review

In the wake of Twombly and Iqbal, courts and commentators have questioned whether notice pleading died with those cases. But what exactly was notice pleading? In this Essay, I argue that the question of whether the Court had "really" abandoned notice pleading in Twombly and Iqbal was a distraction from the fact that a full-bodied doctrine of notice pleading had never really existed in the first place. It had little separate existence from general theories of openness and liberalism, yet the name provided some rhetorical cover by insinuating that the standard was doing some sort of work aside from …

Essential Sentences For Navigating Stack Overflow Answers, Sarah Nadi, Christoph Treude Feb 2020

Essential Sentences For Navigating Stack Overflow Answers, Sarah Nadi, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stack Overflow (SO) has become an essential resource for software development. Despite its success and prevalence, navigating SO remains a challenge. Ideally, SO users could benefit from highlighted navigational cues that help them decide if an answer is relevant to their task and context. Such navigational cues could be in the form of essential sentences that help the searcher decide whether they want to read the answer or skip over it. In this paper, we compare four potential approaches for identifying essential sentences. We adopt two existing approaches and develop two new approaches based on the idea that contextual information …

Refugee Entitlements In Egypt, Amira Hetaba, Claire Mcnally, Elena Habersky Feb 2020

Refugee Entitlements In Egypt, Amira Hetaba, Claire Mcnally, Elena Habersky

Faculty Journal Articles

Situated at the crossroads between Africa, Asia, and Europe, Egypt hosts diverse communities that seek refuge from persecution in their home state (“asylum-seekers”), some of whom are granted refuge (“refugees”), and some of whom ultimately fail to acquire asylum in Egypt (“failed asylum-seekers”). The Egyptian government delegates its power to determine refugee status to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In 2019, UNHCR stated that there were over 247,000 refugees and asylum-seekers registered in Egypt, from 56 different countries of origin. This does not include the numbers of failed asylum-seekers that are supposed to leave Egypt but nevertheless …

Annex To The Report: Refugee Entitlements In Egypt, Amira Hetaba, Claire Mcnally, Elena Habersky

Faculty Journal Articles

This Report maps the legal entitlements of asylum-seekers, refugees, and failed asylum seekers in Egypt under international, regional, bilateral, and domestic laws, examines whether such entitlements are in fact accessible, and makes recommendations for possible future directions. This process is not straightforward because the interplay between legal regimes creates bundles of entitlements that differ depending on one’s immigration status and nationality. Even when laws clearly address the entitlements of asylum-seekers, refugees, and failed asylum-seekers, there is often a gap between entitlements on paper and communities’ ability to access these entitlements. This Report adopts a rights-based approach, assessing asylum-seekers’, refugees’, and …

Attitude Towards One-To-One Technology Among Student Academic Achievement In Ninth Grade Stem Classes, Brenda Patterson Ishmael Feb 2020

Attitude Towards One-To-One Technology Among Student Academic Achievement In Ninth Grade Stem Classes, Brenda Patterson Ishmael

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The use of technology is an essential element in the world in which we live. This study is important because schools around the world spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on one-to-one technology integration in the classroom. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if a predictive relationship exists between the attitudinal level towards one-to-one technology and student academic achievement of ninth-grade students. A bivariate regression analysis was used to determine if there was a predictive relationship between student academic achievement as measure by EOC scores Algebra 1 and Biology 1 and the attitudinal test scores measured …

Image Enhanced Event Detection In News Articles, Meihan Tong, Shuai Wang, Yixin Cao, Bin Xu, Juaizi Li, Lei Hou, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event detection is a crucial and challenging sub-task of event extraction, which suffers from a severe ambiguity issue of trigger words. Existing works mainly focus on using textual context information, while there naturally exist many images accompanied by news articles that are yet to be explored. We believe that images not only reflect the core events of the text, but are also helpful for the disambiguation of trigger words. In this paper, we first contribute an image dataset supplement to ED benchmarks (i.e., ACE2005) for training and evaluation. We then propose a novel Dual Recurrent Multimodal Model, DRMM, to conduct …

Are The Code Snippets What We Are Searching For? A Benchmark And An Empirical Study On Code Search With Natural-Language Queries, Shuhan Yan, Hang Yu, Yuting Chen, Beijun Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Code search methods, especially those that allow programmers to raise queries in a natural language, plays an important role in software development. It helps to improve programmers' productivity by returning sample code snippets from the Internet and/or source-code repositories for their natural-language queries. Meanwhile, there are many code search methods in the literature that support natural-language queries. Difficulties exist in recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of each method and choosing the right one for different usage scenarios, because (1) the implementations of those methods and the datasets for evaluating them are usually not publicly available, and (2) some methods leverage …

Sexual Harassment Gender, Power, Ideology And Time: A Case Study Of The Hill-Thomas And Ford-Kavanaugh Senate Hearings, Salah Mohamed

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual harassment is a social issue in the U.S. and around the world that is gaining more attention, especially with the popularity of social movements such as #MeToo and #Timesup. People usually attempt to frame their positions in sexual harassment narratives using a wide range of strategies, which show insidious ideologies and power imbalances ingrained in the culture of a specific community. The current study investigates sexual harassment through data from the U.S. Senate confirmation hearings for two nominees for the U.S. Supreme Court: Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh. The two nominees were accused of sexual harassment by two professors: …
