An Empirically Supported Taxonomy Of Misinformation, Mark Chong, Murphy Choy Feb 2020

An Empirically Supported Taxonomy Of Misinformation, Mark Chong, Murphy Choy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Fake news, which includes both disinformation and misinformation, has been a challenge for many countries in the last few years. Disinformation has been present in modern history as part of the tool kit of PSYOPS for the military. Likewise, misinformation has been part of human history for a long time. Hoaxes, rumors, and urban legends—all of which can be classified as differing types of misinformation, although they are not commonly addressed as such—have been exploited by adversarial organizations for their own benefit. This study will propose a comprehensive taxonomy to tackle fake news, disinformation, and misinformation and assess the level …

Research In Progress: Applied Linguistics At Northern Arizona University, Usa, Brett James Hashimoto, Daniel Keller, Ekaterina Sudina, Katherine Yaw, Jesse Egbert, Luke Plonsky

Faculty Publications

Founded in 1990, the Applied Linguistics program at Northern Arizona University (NAU) represents a staple of scholarly activity and graduate training in the field. Indeed, the program, which consists of ten core faculty members and approximately 30 Ph.D. students has been and remains highly active and vibrant in terms of professional/societal involvement and, of course, research. This article highlights recent and current projects carried out by the students and faculty members in the program, divided into five focal areas: corpus linguistics, second language (L2) speech, research methods, second language acquisition (SLA), and psycholinguistics.

The Synchronic And Diachronic Phonology Of Nauruan: Towards A Definitive Classification Of An Understudied Micronesian Language, Kevin Hughes Feb 2020

The Synchronic And Diachronic Phonology Of Nauruan: Towards A Definitive Classification Of An Understudied Micronesian Language, Kevin Hughes

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Nauruan is a Micronesian language spoken in the Republic of Nauru, a small island nation in the central Pacific. Lack of data and difficulty in analysis has hindered progress in better understanding Nauruan for decades, particularly regarding its phonology and its classification within the Micronesian family. Because of these challenges, earlier researchers have presented their work on Nauruan as highly tentative. This dissertation establishes more confident analyses of Nauruan phonology, sound change and classification, which have been made possible through original fieldwork.

Approximately one hundred hours of digital recordings have been collected as part of this research, including wordlists, phrases, …

Topic Modeling On Document Networks With Adjacent-Encoder, Ce Zhang, Hady W. Lauw Feb 2020

Topic Modeling On Document Networks With Adjacent-Encoder, Ce Zhang, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Oftentimes documents are linked to one another in a network structure,e.g., academic papers cite other papers, Web pages link to other pages. In this paper we propose a holistic topic model to learn meaningful and unified low-dimensional representations for networked documents that seek to preserve both textual content and network structure. On the basis of reconstructing not only the input document but also its adjacent neighbors, we develop two neural encoder architectures. Adjacent-Encoder, or AdjEnc, induces competition among documents for topic propagation, and reconstruction among neighbors for semantic capture. Adjacent-Encoder-X, or AdjEnc-X, extends this to also encode the network structure …

Multi-Level Fine-Scaled Sentiment Sensing With Ambivalence Handling, Zhaoxia Wang, Seng-Beng Ho, Erik Cambria Feb 2020

Multi-Level Fine-Scaled Sentiment Sensing With Ambivalence Handling, Zhaoxia Wang, Seng-Beng Ho, Erik Cambria

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social media represent a rich source of information, such as critiques, feedback, and other opinions posted online by Internet users. Such information is typically a good reflection of users’ sentiments and attitudes towards various services, topics, or products. Sentiment analysis has become an increasingly important natural language processing (NLP) task to help users make sense of what is happening in the Internet blogosphere and it can be useful for companies as well as public organizations. However, most existing sentiment analysis techniques are only able to analyze data at the aggregate level, merely providing a binary classification (positive vs. negative), and …

Interpretable Rumor Detection In Microblogs By Attending To User Interactions, Ling Min Serena Khoo, Hai Leong Chieu, Zhong Qian, Jing Jiang Feb 2020

Interpretable Rumor Detection In Microblogs By Attending To User Interactions, Ling Min Serena Khoo, Hai Leong Chieu, Zhong Qian, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address rumor detection by learning to differentiate between the community’s response to real and fake claims in microblogs. Existing state-of-the-art models are based on tree models that model conversational trees. However, in social media, a user posting a reply might be replying to the entire thread rather than to a specific user. We propose a post-level attention model (PLAN) to model long distance interactions between tweets with the multi-head attention mechanism in a transformer network. We investigated variants of this model: (1) a structure aware self-attention model (StA-PLAN) that incorporates tree structure information in the transformer network, and (2) …

Foreign Languages Teaching Challenges: Stages, Practices And Methodologies, Khalid Aada

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Leading an engaged teaching-learning process involves considering a bidirectional transfer of knowledge between teachers and students, since it is about favoring an educational interaction environment where students are not only limited to participate in a traditional way, but expect to find meaning to their learning experience and be able to build the acquired knowledge. It’s a dialectical unit between either instruction and education or teaching and learning that would allow to identify a stage of reflection and critical thinking toward the new educational models. In other words, a field where teachers are asked to transform their role as exhibitors of …

Shame, Trauma, Resiliency And Alcohol Related Behaviors In Puerto Rican Populations, Manuel Blasini-Méndez Feb 2020

Shame, Trauma, Resiliency And Alcohol Related Behaviors In Puerto Rican Populations, Manuel Blasini-Méndez

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Puerto Rico has endured horrendous natural disasters in the last few years, leaving thousands to cope with the aftermath; a mental health crisis. Therefore, understanding how Puerto Ricans navigate adversities, be that childhood adversity, natural disasters or daily stress is of utmost importance. Understanding the role resilience and drinking play in Puerto Rico will help us to further understand how they navigate adversities. Hence the reason why in this study we looked at how Adverse Childhood Experiences, Perceived Stress, Natural Disaster Adversity and Shame relate to each other and to Drinking behaviors and Resiliency. Data were collected on Puerto Rico …

Nuestra Gloria The Center For Mexican American Studies At The University Of Texas Rio Grande Valley Celebrates The 30th Anniversary Of The Publication Of Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, Stephanie Alvarez, Amanda Lee Tovar, Mariana Alessandri

Mexican American Studies Faculty Publications

2017 was a significant year in Chicanx, queer, feminist, and American literary history, as it marked the 30th anniversary of the publication of Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza. One of the most influential books of the twentieth century, Borderlands brings forth nuanced concepts of borders and the importance of the identities shaped by them—physical, cultural, or otherwise. The book has paved the way for exploration and healing for many Chicanxs, people of color, individuals of all gender identities and sexual preferences, and everyone who has proximity to any type of border. Recognizing how Borderlands grounds a wide …

Describing Law, Raff Donelson Feb 2020

Describing Law, Raff Donelson

Journal Articles

Legal philosophers make a number of bold, contentious claims about the nature of law. For instance, some claim that law necessarily involves coercion, while others disagree. Some claim that all law enjoys presumptive moral validity, while others disagree. We can see these claims in at least three, mutually exclusive ways: (1) We can see them as descriptions of law's nature (descriptivism), (2) we can see them as expressing non-descriptive attitudes of the legal philosophers in question (expressivism), or (3) we can see them as practical claims about how we should view law or order our society (pragmatism). This paper argues …

Reporting Certainty, James A. Macleod Feb 2020

Reporting Certainty, James A. Macleod

BYU Law Review

Legal theorists, judges, and legal writing instructors persistently decry the assertions of certainty—”obviously X,” “undoubtedly Y,” etc.—that litter judicial opinions. According to the conventional view, the rhetoric of certainty that these assertions epitomize is disingenuous. It also reflects, and even encourages, poor judicial decision-making. And as if that were not enough, it is so unpersuasive that it is counter-persuasive: it signals uncertainty, nonobviousness, etc.—the exact opposite of what its author intends. Judges, for these and other reasons, should abstain from needless assertions of certainty and the myopic thinking they evince. That much is certain.

Yet the rhetoric of certainty persists. …

A Public Health Approach To Uncovering The Health-Related Needs Of Teen Library Patrons, Jennifer R. Banas, Michelle J. Oh, Robin Willard, Jeremy Dunn Feb 2020

A Public Health Approach To Uncovering The Health-Related Needs Of Teen Library Patrons, Jennifer R. Banas, Michelle J. Oh, Robin Willard, Jeremy Dunn

Health Sciences and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Widespread problems with health literacy significantly limit effective dissemination and understanding of health information, particularly among vulnerable populations. As libraries are re-envisioned as community centers and resource providers, librarians are well positioned to help patrons overcome health literacy challenges by helping them to search for and use health information. Librarians often have not had health reference training, and some are unsure of the appropriateness of their role in patrons’ health. This study presents the results of a health needs assessment done in collaboration between the Teen Services Department of a major urban library and faculty from a state university. Using …

A Discourse Analysis Of Reputational Construction In The Field Of Online Contemporary Art Magazines, Tommie Soro Feb 2020

A Discourse Analysis Of Reputational Construction In The Field Of Online Contemporary Art Magazines, Tommie Soro

Doctoral

The bases of artistic reputation have been widely debated within the sociology of art and art history. Remarkably, however, little has been said of the role discourse might play in the construction of artistic reputation. An obstacle to addressing this research gap is that discourse analytic approaches have been developed to analyse evaluation and the construction of legitimacy but not the construction of reputation. Attending first to this research gap in discourse analysis, the thesis combines Field Theory and Discourse Analysis to develop a Discursive Field Approach that can analyse the discursive construction of reputation in a cultural field. Using …

This research project seeks to examine the opportunity gaps facing the adolescents of Carpinteria for the purpose of suggesting a program that intends to address these challenges, in fitting with the mission statement to create pathways for children and youth to flourish, for the Pro Deo Foundation to fund and operate. Section One examines the problem that this dissertation seeks to address, specifically describing the difficult realities that teenagers in Carpinteria face in their everyday lives. Through research with human participants, including community members, leaders and administrators, this section gives the context of the subject matter, its history and the …

Techno-Theology: A Theological Algorithm For Being Human In A Technological Age, Daniel Passini Feb 2020

Techno-Theology: A Theological Algorithm For Being Human In A Technological Age, Daniel Passini

Doctor of Ministry

In a world with rapidly changing technology that challenges our understanding of what it means to be human, our dealings with the biosphere, and our social interactions, many pastors and Christians do not have an adequate theology of technology. Our current narraphors have been influenced by our linguistics, popular culture, and an escapism theology that prevents us from interacting with technology in a theological way. Technotheology is the algorithm necessary to understand humanity’s role in a technological age through the matrix of the imago Dei. Using humanity’s ability to reason, their regency over creation, and their ability to be in …

The Commodification Of The Table: The Journey Toward The Forgotten Body And Blood Of Jesus, Guy L. Taylor Feb 2020

The Commodification Of The Table: The Journey Toward The Forgotten Body And Blood Of Jesus, Guy L. Taylor

Doctor of Ministry

Bread and wine are metaphors for the broken body and spilled blood of Jesus the Christ. Jesus himself stated that these two metaphors are to represent his sacrifice for humans, yet these metaphors have lost much of their importance in present-day Christianity. Pentecostal churches specifically seem to have forgotten what the bread and wine symbolize. Due to cultural influences, these churches no longer place emphasis on celebrating what they call Communion.

Many Pentecostal Christians today attend a service that is convenient, efficient, and that meets all their spiritual needs at one stop—like a Super Walmart of Worship due to the …

Many web sites, in particular ones that serve content from a content management system or database, deliver their content as HTML with an underlying computer generated structure that is then visually formatted and styled using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript.

Additionally, when the website uses a web form to query and return results, the web address is read by the web server or application server, the address is then parsed for parameters, and the parameters are passed to the database behind the website which control the results returned.

There are techniques that utilize these facts to extract large amounts …
