Label Noise Reduction Without Assumptions, Jason Wei Jun 2020

Label Noise Reduction Without Assumptions, Jason Wei

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

We propose an algorithm for training neural networks in noisy label scenarios that up-weighs per-example gradients that are more similar to other gradients in the same minibatch. Our approach makes no assumptions about the amount or type of label noise, does not use a held-out validation set of clean examples, makes relatively few computations, and only modifies the minibatch gradient aggregation module in a typical neural network training workflow. For CIFAR-10 classification with varying levels of label noise, our method successfully up-weighs clean examples and de-prioritizes noisy examples, showing consistent improvement over a vanilla training baseline. Our results open the …

Phrenology, Physical Anthropology And Ethnology: Nineteenth-Century Race Science And The Foundations Of Eurocentrism, Mckenzie Jayne Leeds Jun 2020

Phrenology, Physical Anthropology And Ethnology: Nineteenth-Century Race Science And The Foundations Of Eurocentrism, Mckenzie Jayne Leeds

History

This paper explores phrenology, physical anthropology, and ethnology--each a nineteenth-century scientific discipline that significantly influenced racial beliefs. These sciences were integral in forming and perpetuating racial hierarchies and the belief of perceived European superiority. The main goal of this project was to deconstruct the European superiority narrative, and to argue that these disciplines created a network of continued racism.

Identity Negotiation Of Pre-Service Teachers Of English As A Foreign Language, Hazel Vega, Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens Jun 2020

Identity Negotiation Of Pre-Service Teachers Of English As A Foreign Language, Hazel Vega, Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens

Publications

The study of teacher identity has gained prominence in English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching. However, the construction of EFL teacher identity is underresearched, particularly how teachers navigate dominant discourses around native non-native speakers. This paper presents a qualitative study examining four pre-service teachers in an EFL education program. Grounded in the community of practice identity negotiation framework, results suggest that EFL pre-service teachers’ processes of identity negotiation mainly resided somewhere between adoption and rejection of legitimate practices in the EFL teacher community, in what we call a zone of tension. The findings of this research indicate that pre-service …

Natural Invariance Explains Empirical Success Of Specific Membership Functions, Hedge Operations, And Negation Operations, Julio Urenda, Orsoly Csiszár, Gábor Csiszár, József Dombi, György Eigner, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2020

Natural Invariance Explains Empirical Success Of Specific Membership Functions, Hedge Operations, And Negation Operations, Julio Urenda, Orsoly Csiszár, Gábor Csiszár, József Dombi, György Eigner, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Empirical studies have shown that in many practical problems, out of all symmetric membership functions, special distending functions work best, and out of all hedge operations and negation operations, fractional linear ones work the best. In this paper, we show that these empirical successes can be explained by natural invariance requirements.

Signos Comunes En Los Textiles Andinos Y Los Mesoamericanos, Victòria Solanilla Jun 2020

Signos Comunes En Los Textiles Andinos Y Los Mesoamericanos, Victòria Solanilla

Through The Wire Act, John T. Holden Jun 2020

Through The Wire Act, John T. Holden

Washington Law Review

Legalized sports gambling has become one of the hottest topics in state legislatures ever since the United States Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Ass’n1 allowed states to begin legalizing the activity. As states began to offer sports wagering, gambling became front and center in the news and the Trump administration’s Justice Department took the opportunity to rewrite a 2011 Office of Legal Counsel opinion, expanding the scope of the most prominent federal anti-gambling statute. The re-interpretation of the scope of the Wire Act reversed the Department of Justice’s position that the statute only applied to …

Board Game Under Construction: Putting The Design In Game Design, Cory S. Gurley Jun 2020

Board Game Under Construction: Putting The Design In Game Design, Cory S. Gurley

Masters Theses

The contemporary design landscape is informed by the need for interactive design, yet not all interactive media is digital. Technology has transformed the way many people receive information, and thus the way that they interact with graphic design, and the impact of user interfaces in creating a positive interactive experience is more important now than ever. However, while this phenomenon is usually identified with the digital environment of smartphone apps, websites and video games, user interface is equally important in analog design, and few media illustrate this better than board games. Board games have enjoyed a surge in popularity over …

Surface Modifications Of Reverse Osmosis Membranes For Removal Of Bromide And Reduction Of Fouling, Joseph Seo Jun 2020

Surface Modifications Of Reverse Osmosis Membranes For Removal Of Bromide And Reduction Of Fouling, Joseph Seo

Master's Theses

Reverse osmosis (RO) is widely used for water reuse and desalination. Although RO membranes are known for their high salt rejection and practical permeate flux, their performance can be impaired by fouling, and their removal of some disinfection byproducts and their precursors (e.g., bromide, N-Nitrosodimethylamine [NDMA]) does not meet drinking water standards. RO membrane modifications have been widely studied to overcome these limitations. In this research, RO membranes were grafted with cationic polymers to induce a positive charge on the RO membrane surface. This modification aimed at enhancing the rejection of negatively charged bromide ions by removing them from solution …

Agrammatism And Paragrammatism: A Cortical Double Dissociation Revealed By Lesion-Symptom Mapping, William Matchin, Alexandra Basilakos, Brielle C. Stark, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Fridolin Gross, Gregory Hickok

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

The fundamental distinction of grammatical deficits in aphasia, agrammatism and paragrammatism, was made over a century ago. However, the extent to which the agrammatism/paragrammatism distinction exists independently of differences in speech fluency has not clearly been investigated. Despite much research on agrammatism, the lesion correlates of paragrammatism are essentially unknown. Lesion-symptom mapping was used to investigate the degree to which the lesion correlates of agrammatism and paragrammatism overlap or dissociate. Four expert raters assessed videos of 53 right-handed patients with aphasia following chronic left-hemisphere stroke retelling the Cinderella story. Consensus discussion determined each subject’s classification with respect to grammatical deficits …

Inferring Big Five Personality Factors Using Text Analysis Its Assessment And Impact On Prosocial Behavior And Is Security Compliance, Bouabre Jean Baptiste Koffi

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in general and text mining in particular have resulted in a number of services and applications that infer and provide personality measures from text. The validity of these services, however, has not been subjected to serious empirical scrutiny. The first essay is conducted to validate three services/programs, namely, IBM Watson Personality Insights, Indico, and Personality Recognizer. Specifically, this essay compares the results of these services with those obtained from traditional personality questionnaires. Simple and short essays written by two hundred and fifty-six university students/subjects served as inputs to the personality service programs, while traditional personality …

Medical-Legal Collaboration And Community Partnerships: Prioritizing Prevention Of Human Trafficking In Federally Qualified Health Centers, Kimberly S.G. Chang Md, Mph, Hamida Yusufzai, Anna Marjavi

Georgia State University Law Review

Human trafficking (HT) is increasingly recognized as a public health issue, and its severe consequences affect some of society’s most vulnerable members. Prioritizing prevention is a critical component of a public health framework when addressing HT, and the health care delivery system plays a crucial role in operationalizing primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention interventions. As a significant part of the primary care system in the U.S., Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are uniquely positioned to be the first point of contact with the health care system for people at risk for and affected by HT. FQHCs provide many preventive services, …

Survey On Individual Differences In Visualization, Zhengliang Liu, R. Jordan Crouser, Alvitta Ottley

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Developments in data visualization research have enabled visualization systems to achieve great general usability and application across a variety of domains. These advancements have improved not only people's understanding of data, but also the general understanding of people themselves, and how they interact with visualization systems. In particular, researchers have gradually come to recognize the deficiency of having one-size-fits-all visualization interfaces, as well as the significance of individual differences in the use of data visualization systems. Unfortunately, the absence of comprehensive surveys of the existing literature impedes the development of this research. In this paper, we review the research perspectives, …

Hyperbolic Visual Embedding Learning For Zero-Shot Recognition, Shaoteng Liu, Jingjing Chen, Liangming Pan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua, Yu-Gang Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a Hyperbolic Visual Embedding Learning Network for zero-shot recognition. The network learns image embeddings in hyperbolic space, which is capable of preserving the hierarchical structure of semantic classes in low dimensions. Comparing with existing zeroshot learning approaches, the network is more robust because the embedding feature in hyperbolic space better represents class hierarchy and thereby avoid misleading resulted from unrelated siblings. Our network outperforms exiting baselines under hierarchical evaluation with an extremely challenging setting, i.e., learning only from 1,000 categories to recognize 20,841 unseen categories. While under flat evaluation, it has competitive performance as state-of-the-art methods but …

Human-In-The-Loop Learning From Crowdsourcing And Social Media, Tong Liu Jun 2020

Human-In-The-Loop Learning From Crowdsourcing And Social Media, Tong Liu

Theses

Computational social studies using public social media data have become more and more popular because of the large amount of user-generated data available. The richness of social media data, coupled with noise and subjectivity, raise significant challenges for computationally studying social issues in a feasible and scalable manner. Machine learning problems are, as a result, often subjective or ambiguous when humans are involved. That is, humans solving the same problems might come to legitimate but completely different conclusions, based on their personal experiences and beliefs. When building supervised learning models, particularly when using crowdsourced training data, multiple annotations per data …

Abstract

This study will focus on understanding the role played by the church in meeting the mental health needs of its African American parishioners. The goal is to understand the ways that African American communities hold faith, position themselves within the church, and the outside world, with a specific focus on issues of trust, which have emerged based on historical and structural violence that has debilitated the health of our community. The study examines attitudes and perceptions of church leadership and members around their caring for parishioners with mental health issues. The hope is that the data will help construct …
