Linguoculturological Aspect Of Translating Realias, Shoira Isaeva Independent Researcher Sep 2020

Linguoculturological Aspect Of Translating Realias, Shoira Isaeva Independent Researcher

Philology Matters

This article examines the specificity of translation of realias – linguistic units reflecting national life, which are generally studied in linguoculturology. Cultural linguistics as a branch of linguistics was formed in the 1990s at the intersection of linguistics and cultural studies and explores the manifestations of the culture of people, which are reflected and entrenched in the language. The idea that language and culture are interrelated and culture manifests itself in language, in general, belongs to V. von Humboldt, but only in recent years, linguoculturology began to develop actively, and its terms such as the linguistic picture of the world, …

Linguistic Status Of Address: Address As A Syntactic Unit, Zebo Yovkacheva Phd Student

Philology Matters

This article discusses the linguistic aspect of address. The syntactic category of address attracted the attention of Russian linguists for a long time. The object of their study was address, the natural condition for the existence of which was oral and written forms of dialogical speech. A multilateral analysis of the essence and functioning of circulation in the Russian language was first presented in the works of A.A. Shakhmatova and A.M. Peshkovsky. In modern syntactic works and academic grammars, the methods of expression and distribution of addresses in oral and written dialogical speech, their bridges in the utterance, the nature …

Perspective And Prospects On Applying Artificial Intelligence To Address Water And Environmental Challenges Of 21st Century, Wang Xu, Wang Zhaoyue, Pan Yirong, Luo Yuli, Liu Junxin, Yang Min

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

One of the most pervasive challenges affecting human and planetary well-being is inadequate access to clean water and sanitation. Problems with water are expected to become worse in the coming decades, with water scarcity occurring globally, in the face of ever-growing populations, intensive human activities, and climatic variation. Addressing the aforementioned water security has been achieved consensus and has been included into the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations' Agenda 2030. Despite these ample opportunities, it remains challenging to create reliable, sustainable, and affordable solutions to providing universal access to clean water and sanitation. In this context, …

A Critical Analysis Of Dower (Mahr) In Theory And Practice In British India Through Court Records From 1800 To 1939, Sunil Tirkey Sep 2020

A Critical Analysis Of Dower (Mahr) In Theory And Practice In British India Through Court Records From 1800 To 1939, Sunil Tirkey

Theses and Dissertations

The colonial court records between 1800 to 1939 in India show the existence of excessive dower, which were usually paid at the dissolution of marriage to discourage divorce. Supporting this view of excessive dower as a useful device, Mitra Sharafi argues that inflated dower and divorce law protected Muslim women against instant divorce, making it too expensive for husbands to use it. Further, according to her, British judges enhanced women's rights to dower and divorce by pronouncing rulings in favour of a high amount of dower to protect the women against the one-sided authority of men to divorce. Contrary to …

50 Anos De Evolução Nos Estudos Linguísticos Transculturais: Da Retórica Contrastiva À Retórica Intercultural, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

Autofiction And Its Fantastic Modalities In César Aira’S Cómo Me Hice Monja, Erwin Snauwaert Sep 2020

Autofiction And Its Fantastic Modalities In César Aira’S Cómo Me Hice Monja, Erwin Snauwaert

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

As a narrative practice in which the author invents a personality and an existence while preserving his personal identity and true name, ‘autofiction’ constitutes a suitable instrument to give rise to ‘the fantastic’. By fusing the narrative pacts of the autobiography and the autobiographical novel, autofiction establishes an ambiguity similar to that of the ‘vacillation’ between the strange and the marvelous, which lays the foundations of the fantastic genre. The continuous allusion to the author’s person, in addition, provides the reference to reality, which is crucial in accentuating the uncanny, and intensifies the sense of perplexity experienced by the reader. …

Do Urban Red Foxes Attack People? An Exploratory Study And Review Of Incidents In Britain, Bethany Bridge, Stephen Harris Sep 2020

Do Urban Red Foxes Attack People? An Exploratory Study And Review Of Incidents In Britain, Bethany Bridge, Stephen Harris

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Human–wildlife interactions are believed to be increasing worldwide, and a number of studies have analyzed the risks posed by larger carnivores. However, people can also perceive smaller species of carnivores as threatening, particularly in urban areas. Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) started to colonize British cities in the 1930s, and there is growing public concern about foxes biting people, particularly babies. These events are generally described in the press as attacks and generate intense media coverage and speculation that foxes view human infants as potential prey. Because foxes rely primarily on auditory cues for hunting, we conducted acoustic playback …

The Hospitality Of The Abyssal Ground Or Perceptual Architectures Of Indeterminacy, Natasha Lushetich Sep 2020

The Hospitality Of The Abyssal Ground Or Perceptual Architectures Of Indeterminacy, Natasha Lushetich

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

There never has been such a thing as solid ground. As profoundly transient beings, all we can hope for is the hospitality of the abyssal ground.[1] Perhaps that is why our everyday aesthetic appreciation of our natural environment is inseparable from indeterminacy, as change and ambiguity but also potentiality; think of the immensely pleasurable journeys through the rapidly changing shapes in fire- or cloud-gazing. But can the same be said of our machinic environment? In this article, I discuss indeterminacy as a generative principle in four realms: elemental, evental, linguistic, and machinic. Anchoring the transubstantiating potential of the four …

Topic Modeling To Understand Technology Talent, Chad Madding, Allen Ansari, Chris Ballenger, Aswini Thota

SMU Data Science Review

Attracting technology talent in today’s hiring climate is more complicated than ever. Recruiting for technology talent in non-technology industries is even more challenging. This intense hiring landscape is motivating companies not only to attract the right talent but also to create a culture that can retain and grow that talent. In this paper, we developed algorithms and present insights that use data provided in reviews to glean information employers can use to address or even change their priorities to meet the demands of an ever-changing job market. The core of our research is to investigate and attribute the role of …

Toxic Language Detection Using Robust Filters, Deepti Kunupudi, Shantanu Godbole, Pankaj Kumar, Suhas Pai

SMU Data Science Review

Social networks sometimes become a medium for threats, insults, and other types of cyberbullying. A large number of people are involved in online social networks. Hence, the protection of network users from anti-social behavior is a critical activity [19]. One of the significant tasks of such activity is the detection of toxic language. Abusive/Toxic language in user-generated online content has become an issue of increasing importance in recent years. Most current commercial methods use blacklists and regular expressions; however, these measures fall short when contending with more subtle, lesser-known examples of hate speech, profanity, or swearing[6]. Abusive language classification has …

Engaging Communities In Archaeology On Private Property In An Urban Neighborhood: The Search For The First (1825-1829) Fort Vancouver, Vancouver, Washington, Amy Carolyn Clearman Sep 2020

Engaging Communities In Archaeology On Private Property In An Urban Neighborhood: The Search For The First (1825-1829) Fort Vancouver, Vancouver, Washington, Amy Carolyn Clearman

Dissertations and Theses

Current archaeological literature calls for archaeology to become increasingly relevant in the modern world. Involvement in archaeological research can enhance the relevancy of archaeology for participants of public archaeology projects by strengthening personal connections with heritage and history. To investigate the impact of direct involvement in archaeological research on residents in Vancouver, Washington, I recruited members of two neighborhoods associated with Fort Vancouver National Historic Site to participate in the archaeological search for material remains of the first (1825-1829) Fort Vancouver. I asked the question: How does involvement in a public archaeology project affect participants' feelings about heritage, archaeology, and …

Contentment Or Torment? An Analytic Autoethnography Of Publication Aptitude In Doctor Of Philosophy, Atiqur Sm-Rahman, Yasmin Jahan Sep 2020

Contentment Or Torment? An Analytic Autoethnography Of Publication Aptitude In Doctor Of Philosophy, Atiqur Sm-Rahman, Yasmin Jahan

The Qualitative Report

The burgeoning trend of pursuing publication in a leading journal, as a benchmark of standard doctoral research, has become an appealing expectation of early-stage doctoral researchers (ESDR). However, recent pedagogical studies showed limited attention to exploring the dynamic relations between doctoral education and the academic publication process. Our aim was to investigate and understand (if and) how this intricately intertwined relation contributes to the scholarly publication practice in doctoral education from an individual and institutional context. We used a duo-analytic autoethnography approach and presented a comprehensive narrative based on the authors’ self-reflections by using a range of data sources namely …

Gower´S Queer Poetics In The Mirour De L'Omme, María Bullón-Fernández Sep 2020

Gower´S Queer Poetics In The Mirour De L'Omme, María Bullón-Fernández

Accessus

Gower's Queer Poetics in the Mirour de l'Omme

In the Mirour de l’Omme John Gower describes the allegorical Sins as both deceitful and “hermafrodrite” and later confesses to having engaged in queer practices in his earlier courtly poetry. Gower’s confession and his association of the Sins with intersexuality, I will argue, do not entail ultimately a rejection of queer poetics. In his Life of the Virgin Mary, the final part of the Mirour, Gower deploys a different kind of queer poetics, one that acknowledges the indeterminacies of language but still seeks to stabilize meaning, while intertwining male and female.

The Community Of The Realm: Gower's Account Of The Commons In Book V Of The Vox Clamantis, Robert J. Meindl Sep 2020

The Community Of The Realm: Gower's Account Of The Commons In Book V Of The Vox Clamantis, Robert J. Meindl

Accessus

Gower's stated intention at the beginning of Book III of the Vox Clamantis to survey the three degrees of the world, i.e. the clerics, knights, and farmers, is not forthcoming in exactly the manner he specifies. Instead, he delivers a lengthy critique of the clergy in Books III and IV and then an account of the secular world apart from the nobility in Book V. This book deals with the rural and urban components of late fourteenth-century English society, that is, the gentry and the bound and free agricultural workers on the one hand and the merchants, artisans, and plebs …

Caregiver Well-Being And Burden: Variations By Race/Ethnicity And Care Recipient Nativity Status, Heehyul E. Moon, William E. Haley, Sunshine M. Rote, Jeanelle S. Sears

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background and Objectives: Despite growing diversity among the aging population and extensive previous research on racial/ethnic minority caregivers, little research has been conducted on the potentially unique experiences and outcomes of informal caregivers of foreign-born care recipients. Using nationally representative data and the Stress Process Model, the current study examined the differences in caregiver outcomes (care burden, psychological well-being, and self-rated health) by care recipient nativity status (U.S.-born vs. foreign-born) and the extent to which caregiver outcomes vary by care recipient nativity status and caregiver race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, Hispanic, and Others).

Research Design and Methods: The current study …
