No One Is Disposable: Towards Feminist Models Of Transformative Justice, Hannah Barrie

Journal of Law and Social Policy

This article looks toward a future of prison abolition by arguing for feminist models of Transformative Justice (TJ), a strategy that responds to harm by aiming to transform the conditions that make violence possible. Autoethnographic reflections of the author’s experience volunteering with Circles of Support and Accountability (COSA), a TJ initiative based on friendship and accountability working to reintegrate people incarcerated for perpetrating sexualized violence back into communities, are combined with a critical analysis of the existing literature about TJ principles and initiatives. Insights from the author’s experience with COSA are examined for their potential use in a feminist TJ …

Word Walls In Social Studies: One Solution To The "Vocabulary Conundrum", Dianna Townsend, Ashley Baxter, Annie Keller, Hannah Carter

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Julia Kearney and Lori Bingham (pseudonyms), two middle school social studies teachers in a large urban school, have a problem. They want to have their students asking and exploring important questions about American history, and they want them to have the vocabulary knowledge needed to do so. While Julia and Lori recognize the rich linguistic resources their students bring to their classrooms, they also recognize the intense vocabulary demands of social studies. Julia and Lori recently participated in a professional learning initiative to develop research-based approaches for building students’ academic vocabulary knowledge in social studies. They learned about the potential …

Assessing Topical Homogeneity With Word Embedding And Distance Matrices, Jeffrey M. Stanton, Yisi Sang Oct 2020

Assessing Topical Homogeneity With Word Embedding And Distance Matrices, Jeffrey M. Stanton, Yisi Sang

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Researchers from many fields have used statistical tools to make sense of large bodies of text. Many tools support quantitative analysis of documents within a corpus, but relatively few studies have examined statistical characteristics of whole corpora. Statistical summaries of whole corpora and comparisons between corpora have potential application in the analysis of topically organized applications such social media platforms. In this study, we created matrix representations of several corpora and examined several statistical tests to make comparisons between pairs of corpora with respect to the topical homogeneity of documents within each corpus. Results of three experiments suggested that a …

The account @ZIENAAB_313 sent out a tweet with an accompanying photograph of a liquor store in flames behind a grimmly ironic silhouette waving an American flag. This stark image, although reported to be Arizona, captured an altogether different scene. A quick analysis of the photo and an image reference search reveals that the photo was from the George Floyd riots in Minnesota. The pairing of this quote and photo raises many questions regarding the authenticity of the account producing it, as well as its motives. The tweet was also being amplified and liked by accounts extremely similar in form and …

Diversity Issues In Literacy Teacher Education, Sue Ann Sharma, Wendy C. Kasten, Lynn A. Smolen, Abha Gupta, Julie Kidd, Tanya S. Wright

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

In this study, the researchers examine how diversity and knowledge about diversity were viewed and integrated into higher education literacy programs. Using online focus groups, we collected information about diversity in literacy at the program and course levels. Literacy teacher educators reported complexities in the preparation of current and future teachers regarding working with diverse learners. The three themes of perspectives and dispositions, curriculum issues and decisions, and outside influences emerged. The researchers recommend that teacher educators find innovative ways to increase teacher education program effectiveness to enhance the dispositions and practices of the teachers whom they prepare where diversity …

Infants’ Discrimination Of Consonant Contrasts In The Presence And Absence Of Talker Variability, Carolyn Quam, Lauren Clough, Sara Knight, Louann Gerken

Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

To learn speech‐sound categories, infants must identify the acoustic dimensions that differentiate categories and selectively attend to them as opposed to irrelevant dimensions. Variability on irrelevant acoustic dimensions can aid formation of robust categories in infants through adults in tasks such as word learning (e.g., Rost and McMurray, 2009) or speech‐sound learning (e.g., Lively et al., 1993). At the same time, variability sometimes overwhelms learners, interfering with learning and processing. Two prior studies (Kuhl & Miller, 1982; Jusczyk, Pisoni, & Mullennix, 1992) found that irrelevant variability sometimes impaired early sound discrimination. We asked whether variability would impair or facilitate discrimination …

ASEE North Midwest Section Annual Conference 2020 Publications

Background - One of the most critical challenges in engineering education is improving students’ divergent thinking skills. Usually, we observe students’ fixating on only one single solution for engineering problems. However, their ability to think outside the box and provide alternative solutions should be developed. Research shows that engagement may foster the development of thoughts and boost creativity.
Purpose/Hypothesis – Our aim was to investigate students’ engagement with tasks that inspire different facets of creativity (verbal, numeric, and visual). Considering the role of demographics in student engagement, we explored the relationship between their engagement level and demographic traits such as …

Negotiating Afro-Jewish Identity In The Cabo Verdean Diaspora, Alma Gottlieb Oct 2020

Negotiating Afro-Jewish Identity In The Cabo Verdean Diaspora, Alma Gottlieb

Journal of Cape Verdean Studies

In this paper, I explore how diasporic Cabo Verdean-Americans with Jewish ancestry (especially those living in the New England region of the U.S.) experience their racially and spiritually mixed (and doubly or even triply stigmatized) identity. Being African in (racist) North America presents enormous challenges. Being Jewish in (increasingly anti-Semitic) North America presents different but somewhat parallel challenges. To account for unexpected identity crossings, I combine critical race theory with a Geertzian approach to understanding social worlds. In chronicling the experiences of Cape Verdeans who embrace divergent components of their multi-layered racial and spiritual heritage, I consider whether Cabo Verdeans …

“If Aristotle Had Cooked”: Contemporary Feminist Practices Within The Rhetoric Of Young Latinas’ Spoken Word Performances, Nora K. Rivera

English Faculty Articles and Research

Over three hundred years have passed since Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the first feminist in the Americas, wrote her famous response defending her right to learn and to speak through her poetry. Today, the spoken word poetry of Melissa Lozada-Oliva, Denice Frohman, Mercedez Holtry, Melania Luisa Marte, and Elizabeth Acevedo grapples with the same matters Sor Juana did more than three hundred years ago. This article analyzes the feminist practices within the rhetoric of the spoken word performances of Lozada-Oliva, Frohman, Holtry, Marte, and Acevedo by positioning their work as performed testimonios (Blackmer Reyes and Curry Rodriguez 2012; …

The “Poison’D Cup” And The “Invisible Spirit”: The Significance Of Wine In Three Shakespearean Tragedies, Angela Hanratty

Other resources

Alcohol, feasting and revelry play a major part in most of Shakespeare’s works. The utilisation and consumption of wine merits special focus as a signifier in Shakespeare’s work. Much has been written on the role of wine in his comedies, less so regarding Shakespearean tragedies. This discussion will focus on the significance of wine in three seminal works that were crafted at the end of the Elizabethan era, namely Hamlet, Macbeth and Othello. Beginning with an overview of the role and significance of wine to the plot of each of the plays, the analysis will then move to …

To Teach, Delight, And Inspire. Experiences With Kim Sowol’S Jindallaekkot (Azaleas) As A Printed Facsimile, Printed Scholarly Edition, Web-Based Reading Text, And Virtual Reality Experience, Wayne De Fremery

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship

Here we document how college students responded to a canonical book of Korean poems, Kim Sowol’s 1925 Jindallaekkot (Azaleas), presented in a variety of formats: as part of a 2014 printed facsimile, a 2007 printed scholarly edition, a reading text articulated as a web page on a tablet, and a radical refiguration as a virtual reality forest. We asked students to describe if they enjoyed and felt inspired by their encounters with Kim Sowol’s poetry in these different formats. We also asked if they felt their experiences were educational and if they engendered a desire to share Kim Sowol’s poetry …
