Exploitation, Fear And Restitution: The Story Of Tuluwat Today, Joshua K. Overington
Exploitation, Fear And Restitution: The Story Of Tuluwat Today, Joshua K. Overington
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
Genocide continues to have everlasting effects on the it’s victims across the globe. In Humboldt county one of the most harrowing atrocities was the massacre of 1860 on Tuluwat island. In 2019 the City of Eureka returned the island to the Wiyot Tribe because of Tuluwat’s cultural significance to the local Native population. The following narrative details my personal experiences and research delving into the lasting effects of this mass murder, the way it’s story is told now and the reparations being made today. While doing this I learned more about the island through personal testimonies, local signage and attending …
Ishi And The California Indian Genocide As Developmental Mass Violence, Robert K. Hitchcock, Charles A. Flowerday
Ishi And The California Indian Genocide As Developmental Mass Violence, Robert K. Hitchcock, Charles A. Flowerday
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
Ishi represents a form of sentimental folk reductionism. But he can be a teaching tool for the California Indian Genocide, John Sutter also. His mill was where gold was discovered – setting off a frenzied settlement in which Indians were legally enslaved and slaughtered, finally ending a decade after the Emancipation Proclamation. They had already experienced wholesale devastation under Spanish and Mexican colonization. The mission system itself was inhumane and genocidal. It codified enslavement and trafficking of Indians as economically useful and morally purposeful. Mexican administration paid lip service to Indian emancipation but exploited them ruthlessly as peons. The California …
Developing An Acute Care Simulation Lab And Practicum, Erin Clark, Lori Lombard
Developing An Acute Care Simulation Lab And Practicum, Erin Clark, Lori Lombard
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The benefits of simulation-based education have been well-documented in health-related disciplines and are emerging in speech-language pathology. Several clinical training paradigms for acute care speech-language pathology skills have been successful when implemented in high fidelity, nursing simulation labs with price tags that are cost prohibitive for most speech-language pathology programs. Through funding support from a grant and a four-phased simulation development program, the authors developed an acute care simulation lab dedicated to speech-language pathology students for under $9,000 and simultaneously piloted a one-credit, acute care, adult- and geriatric-focused clinical practicum course. The clinical practicum was structured to scaffold student learning …

Supporting Academic Primary Care Teams Serving Refugees: A Qualitative Study, Gabrielle Waclawik Md Mph, Fabiana Kotovicz, Devin Walsh-Felz Md Mph, Savitri Tsering Mssw, Nancy Pandhi Md Mph Phd
Journal of Refugee & Global Health
Introduction: Primary care providers continue to experience significant challenges when caring for refugee patients, yet they are often refugees’ initial point of contact with the U.S. health care system. The purpose of this qualitative study is to expand our understanding of the experiences of academic primary care team members during clinical encounters with refugee patients.
Methods: This multi-perspective, qualitative study included physicians (faculty and residents), nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, and medical assistants (n=10), who have been working with refugee patients for at least one year at two family medicine residency clinics and/or a community health center. Semi-structured in-person interviews were …
To Teach Or Not To Teach Online, William Robertson
To Teach Or Not To Teach Online, William Robertson
Departmental Papers (TE)
The use of online course delivery has been promoted at many institutions of higher education as a way to provide greater access to students in a variety of degree programs. The lack of emphasis of online pedagogical strategies has left many faculty members to not consider teaching online, while administrators look for ways to increase revenue through enrollment with limited classroom space on campus. In this paper, the reasons faculty who have taught not online are explored and examined, while providing insight into the motivations of teaching online that could lead to increased participation within distance learning frameworks. Currently, universities …

Automatic Generation Of Training Corpus For Natural Language Processing Tasks, Shruti Gupta, Anmol Gulati, Jayakumar Hoskere
Automatic Generation Of Training Corpus For Natural Language Processing Tasks, Shruti Gupta, Anmol Gulati, Jayakumar Hoskere
Defensive Publications Series
Machine learning models that perform grammar error correction (GEC) suffer from insufficient training data. This disclosure describes techniques that automatically generate a large corpus of training data for GEC and other natural language processing tasks. With specific user permission, the techniques leverage the edit histories of documents by identifying changes to documents attributable to grammatical corrections by users. The training set for the GEC machine learning model is automatically augmented by sentences known to be ungrammatical (e.g., original text, before revision by user) or grammatical (e.g., text after revision by user), and labeled as such. The techniques enable the provision …

Adopting And Growing A Community-Based Early Language Program: Challenges And Solutions For Implementation Success, Cary M. Cain, Kimberly Kay Lopez, Lynda Chima Aririguzo, Angela Cummings
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The number of interventions focused on early language development in young children has increased over the past decade. There is a paucity of research on the adoption and implementation of these programs in real-world community settings. This study presents findings from qualitative interviews with leadership, staff, and past participants of a community-based early language development intervention. Themes related to program implementation challenges and solutions are presented. Previous program participants (n=16) identified facilitators and barriers to successful program implementation and provided specific recommendations for program improvements. Interviews with the program leadership and staff (n=6) revealed two main themes: Servant leadership and …

Lopez V. Seccombe: The City Of San Bernardino’S Mexican American Defense Committee And Its Role In Regional And National Desegregation, Mark Ocegueda
History in the Making
This article examines Lopez v. Seccombe, one of the earliest successful desegregation court cases in United States history. The legal challenge was decided in 1944 in the City of San Bernardino, California and desegregated city parks and recreational facilities, specifically the Perris Hill “plunge” or pool. The decision of this case set precedent for other local desegregation challenges, including the much more celebrated Mendez v. Westminster decision in 1947, and eventually had influence on the landmark Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. This study will focus on the Mexican American barrio in San Bernardino’s Westside, …
“I Used To Think You Were Just A Story”: Imagined Violence In Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ A Red Girl’S Reasoning, Hannah Barrie
“I Used To Think You Were Just A Story”: Imagined Violence In Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ A Red Girl’S Reasoning, Hannah Barrie
Journal of International Women's Studies
Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ 2012 short film A Red Girl’s Reasoning dismantles the narrative of colonial sexualized violence in its representation of the protagonist, Delia, enacting retributive violence against white men. Tailfeathers’ tense eleven-minute film depicts a First Nations woman seeking violent vengeance against white men who have sexually assaulted Indigenous women. This essay explores the political and transformative potential of such stories of revenge, examining A Red Girl’s Reasoning’s fictional representation of violence against the colonial oppressor alongside J. Halberstam’s discussion of imagined violence. I argue that this story of violent revenge is productive in its utopic depiction of a counterreality …
Designing Research To Dismantle Oppression: Utilizing Critical Narrative Analysis & Critical Participatory Action Research In Research On Mothering And Work And Beyond, Nicole Dillard
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper seeks to explore Critical Narrative Analysis (CNA) and Critical Participatory Action Research (CPAR) as valuable methodologies in research for their potential to challenge the inherent absoluteness of master narratives through the personal and counter-narratives of research participants, while also providing participants an action-oriented emancipatory opportunity to lead the change needed in their organizations, communities and society at large.
Citing a previous study which explored how patriarchal, colonially-structured master narratives have played a significant role in reproducing the limited views which dominate American understanding of working mothers, the author will demonstrate how CNA and CPAR combined can expose how …

The Salon Is Now In Session: A Reflection On Unisa’S Decolonial Reading, Motlatsi Khosi, Lenka Vráblíková
Journal of International Women's Studies
How can we – those who are involved in institutions of higher education as researchers, students, educators and administrators – contribute to the decolonial project? How can we dismantle colonial structures in ways that speak to and from our practices of teaching and learning? And how are we to engage with what has become known as ‘Decolonial Theory’ in our everyday practice inside the university? As follows from the work of thinkers and educators such as bell hooks, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o and Nelson Maldonado-Torres, the control of the means of producing and reproducing knowledge is key for sustaining coloniality but …
Spatial Training And Calculus Ability: Investigating Impacts On Student Performance And Cognitive Style, Lindsay J. Mccunn, Emily Cilli-Turner
Spatial Training And Calculus Ability: Investigating Impacts On Student Performance And Cognitive Style, Lindsay J. Mccunn, Emily Cilli-Turner
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Undergraduate calculus is a foundational mathematics sequence that previews the sophistication students will need to succeed in higher-level courses. However, students often struggle with concepts in calculus because they are more abstract and visual than those in other foundational mathematics courses. Additionally, women continue to be underrepresented in the STEM fields. This study builds on previous work indicating a malleability in spatial ability by testing whether improvement occurs in students’ spatial and mathematics ability after implementing spatial training in calculus courses. The researchers also measured associations between spatial training and self-reported cognitive style. While spatial training did not significantly improve …

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
The transition from the industrial society to the information society has brought profound changes, even for what concerns the architecture and the way of operating of the architects. Just think of the emergence of big events and themes of recent years, such as the abandoned areas, or to the new conception of the metropolitan landscape, or even the development of an ecological conscience, not to mention the technical potential linked to electronics also in the construction industry. The book illustrates the path that goes from Walter Gropius to Ben Van Berkel, stressing the moments of crisis and the catalysts of …

Bourdieu And Jung: A Thought Partnership To Explore Personal, Social, And Collective Unconscious Influences On Professional Practices, Rosa Bologna, Franziska Trede, Narelle Patton
The Qualitative Report
This paper introduces a thought partnership between Pierre Bourdieu and Carl Jung used to explore clinical play therapists’ understanding and critical reflexivity of unconscious influences on their relational practices with parents. The partnership is situated within a broader methodological partnership between Paul Ricoeur and Jung discussed by the authors in another paper in this issue. The purpose of the Bourdieu and Jung partnership is to design a comprehensive theoretical tool kit that enables the exploration of the interrelated nature of personal, social, and collective unconscious influences on professional practices. The paper discusses seven Bourdieusian and ten Jungian thinking tools and …

A Critical Imaginal Hermeneutics Approach To Explore Unconscious Influences On Professional Practices: A Ricoeur And Jung Partnership, Rosa Bologna, Franziska Trede, Narelle Patton
The Qualitative Report
Professional relationships are at the heart of professional practice. Qualitative studies exploring professional practice relationships are typically positioned in either the social constructivist (interpretive) paradigm where the aim is to explore actors’ subjective understandings of their relationships and relational practices, or in the critical paradigm where the aim is to reveal objective unconscious structures and hidden power plays influencing actors’ practices. This paper introduces critical imaginal hermeneutics as a systemic philosophical and methodological approach situated on the juncture of the social constructivist and critical paradigms where the dual aim is to explore both actors’ subjective understanding and meaning-making processes associated …

The Time Is Now: Building Educators’ Capacities To Teach For Social Justice And Equity, Felicia Baiden
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
The recent killings of Black Americans namely Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Rayshard Brooks by police officers or vigilantes have increased racial tension and social unrest locally and nationally. Protests have ensued around the world for racial justice and equity. As educators, it is imperative now more than ever to examine and interrogate our education system and determine more equitable and socially just teaching practices that will better serve a culturally and linguistically diverse student population and ultimately contribute toward the public good of society. Research has suggested that educators need support and professional learning on how to …
Understanding Child Noncompliance In The Early Care Setting, Melody Mann
Understanding Child Noncompliance In The Early Care Setting, Melody Mann
McNair Research Journal SJSU
This study examines how teachers respond to children’s noncompliance in early care settings. This structured observational study will focus on the moment to moment interactions occurring within the preschool classroom between both the child and teacher. It is predicted that (1) teacher’s direct bids to children will promote greater instances of child compliance than indirect bids, and (2) teachers’ responsive language will promote greater instances of child compliance than restrictive language. The results of this study will contribute to existing knowledge about the nature of teacher child interactions in the early care settings.
