Responding To Appalachian Voices: Steps In Developing Substance-Use Recovery Ecosystems, Bruce Behringer

Journal of Appalachian Health

A description is presented of the four-step process used by the Appalachian Regional Commission to develop a new Recovery to Work initiative. The Commission identified, defined, and described issues facing individuals who complete substance abuse disorder treatment and who seek reentry into the workforce. Key elements were identified for resources and supports to develop and maintain community-based substance abuse recovery ecosystems. The steps included conceptualization, data collection, analysis, and review to formulate recommendations for program and policy development. The full process of development was accomplished in twelve months.

Pandemic Abandonment, Panoramic Displays And Fascist Propaganda: The Month The Earth Stood Still, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"While governing a country facing a global pandemic, a shattered economy, and widespread civil unrest over the death of George Floyd, Trump has shown little compassion for humanity and has chosen ego gratification over care and concern for his countrymen and in the process put the entire world in greater danger from Covid-19."

Clarifying Is Project Complexity Through Factor Analysis, Nazeer Joseph, Carl Marnewick Jul 2020

Clarifying Is Project Complexity Through Factor Analysis, Nazeer Joseph, Carl Marnewick

The African Journal of Information Systems

Research shows that the information systems domain is underrepresented in project complexity as it has only eight percent representation within the project complexity landscape. Emphasis is placed mostly on generic project management and engineering project management. This begs the question of how well IS project complexity is understood in literature? The goal of this research is to perform the groundwork for developing new theoretical foundations for information systems (IS) project complexity by enriching previous work. Complexity theory was applied to develop a comprehensive theoretical model for IS project complexity. The IS project complexity (ISPC) model was developed and revealed that …

Learnings From A Cloud Migration Project At A South African Retailer, Nonqaba Jaka, Carolien Van Den Berg Dr. Jul 2020

Learnings From A Cloud Migration Project At A South African Retailer, Nonqaba Jaka, Carolien Van Den Berg Dr.

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

All industries are aware of the potential benefits of cloud computing, however, the migration to cloud has not been widely adopted by South African retailers. The purpose of this paper is to explore the motivations behind organisations deciding to migrate to cloud and the factors that may impact a successful cloud migration project. The paper discusses a case study that analysed the key drivers and the impact of cloud migration within a retail environment. The empirical findings suggest that skills and competencies largely impact every aspect of cloud migration, from decision making to execution and support. Furthermore, that migrating to …

Examining The Relationships Between Innovation, Quality, Productivity And Customer Satisfaction In Pure Service Companies, Dongjun Rew, Joo Jung, Steve Lovett Jul 2020

Examining The Relationships Between Innovation, Quality, Productivity And Customer Satisfaction In Pure Service Companies, Dongjun Rew, Joo Jung, Steve Lovett

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Purpose – This study investigates the relationships between innovation, quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction in pure service companies. Previous studies have shown a negative relationship between quality and productivity in services. However, we argue the two can be positively related when innovation is present.

Design/methodology/approach – We develop and test our hypotheses using the secondary data from the COMPUSTAT, KLD STAT, and the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). We test our hypotheses using ordinary least squares regression and conduct additional testing using path analysis.

Findings – The findings show that quality and productivity are positively related when innovation is present …

The Failure To Grapple With Racial Capitalism In European Constitutionalism, Fernanda Giorgia Nicola Dr. Jul 2020

The Failure To Grapple With Racial Capitalism In European Constitutionalism, Fernanda Giorgia Nicola Dr.

Working Papers

Since the 1980s prominent scholars of European legal integration have used the example of U.S. constitutionalism to promote a federal vision for the European Community. These scholars, drawing lessons from developments across the Atlantic, concluded that the U.S. Supreme Court had played a key role in fostering national integration and market liberalization. They foresaw the possibility for the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to be a catalyst for a similar federal and constitutional outcome in Europe. The present contribution argues that the scholars who constructed today’s dominant European constitutional paradigm underemphasized key aspects of the U.S. constitutional experience, including judgments …

Belva Lockwood, Melinda Evans Jul 2020

Belva Lockwood, Melinda Evans

BYU Studies

In August 1889, a number of newspapers ran an article that began with this sentence: “Belva Lockwood has long been considered the nerviest woman in the United States.”1 At the time, Belva Lockwood had been a household name in the U.S. for many years. By 1889, she had also established herself as an outspoken advocate who unabashedly defended the legal rights of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Emerging Legal Architecture For Social Justice, Luz E. Herrera, Louise G. Trubek Jul 2020

The Emerging Legal Architecture For Social Justice, Luz E. Herrera, Louise G. Trubek

Faculty Scholarship

Lawyers advocating for social change are now front and center in newspapers and social media. This article discusses how a new breed of progressive lawyers envision social justice law practice today. These “critical lawyers” are diverse in background, gender, ethnicity and race. They see law as a complex, contradictory tool rather than a necessary and sufficient route to justice. Their practices differ from the traditional non-profit public interest firms of the earlier generation that assumed justice would result if law and lawyers were accessible. To highlight the differences, the article discusses the law practices of Beyond Legal Aid, Law for …

Repealing The Statute Of Wizarding Secrecy In Legal Education, Mark Burge Jul 2020

Repealing The Statute Of Wizarding Secrecy In Legal Education, Mark Burge

Faculty Scholarship

In the fictional Harry Potter universe, J.K. Rowling has fashioned a parallel world based on our own, but with the fundamental difference of a separate magical society grafted onto it. In Rowling’s fictional version, the magical population lives among the non-magical Muggle population, but we Muggles are largely unaware of them. This secrecy is by elaborate design and was brought about by centuries-long hostility toward wizards by the non-magical majority. But what if secrecy is precisely the wrong approach? What if widespread wizard-Muggle collaboration were precisely the thing needed to address the enormous and pressing problems of the day?

The …
