Oral Probiotic Supplementation As An Adjunct To Non-Surgical Therapy In Peri-Implantitis Lesions: A Pilot Study, Po-Ning Polly Huang

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: During the last decade, the results of several clinical studies suggested that oral probiotics may potentially improve oral health. The first study examining the effects of probiotics on oral health demonstrated that almost every patient with gingivitis, periodontitis or pregnancy gingivitis, had significant improvements in measurable periodontal indices when they were treated with a locally administered culture supernatant of a Lactobacillus acidophilus strain. This finding sparked several other studies to further examine the potential for treating oral diseases, such as, combating halitosis, oral candidiasis, and dental caries with probiotics. Of our interest, Fernandez et al. and Hollstrom et al. …

Advancements In Vaccine Development: Measles Vs. Covid-19, Sarah Ziegler

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

As an ever-progressing field of study, vaccine development has made headway over the past decades. By doing a comparative study between development of the measles vaccine in the mid-20th century, and the ongoing development of the COVID-19 vaccine in 2020, many of the insights and advancements in the field can be easily highlighted. First, the knowledge and experience gained over those decades has helped the vaccine developing process become more efficient. With more vaccines in production, or at least under study, it is more likely to have a related precedent to build upon, as opposed to relying on a successful …

Perinatal Opioid Exposure Primes The Peripheral Immune System Toward Hyperreactivity, Jessie Newville, Jessie R Maxwell, Yuma Kitase, Shenandoah Robinson, Lauren L Jantzie

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

The increased incidence of opioid use during pregnancy warrants investigation to reveal the impact of opioid exposure on the developing fetus. Exposure during critical periods of development could have enduring consequences for affected individuals. Particularly, evidence is mounting that developmental injury can result in immune priming, whereby subsequent immune activation elicits an exaggerated immune response. This maladaptive hypersensitivity to immune challenge perpetuates dysregulated inflammatory signaling and poor health outcomes. Utilizing an established preclinical rat model of perinatal methadone exposure, we sought to investigate the consequences of developmental opioid exposure on

Weak Biofilm Formation Among Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella Pneumoniae, Jaclyn A. Cusumano, R. Caffrey, Kathryn E. Daffinee, Megan K. Luther, Vrishali Lopes, Kerry L. Laplante

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Biofilm formation of multidrug and extensively drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniaeisolates is poorly understood. We investigated 139 diverse clinical K. pneumoniaeisolates that possess various resistance patterns to evaluate the relationship between biofilm formation and resistance. Antimicrobial resistance was compared among a diverse collection of weak versus strong biofilm-forming K. pneumoniae, and predictors of strong biofilm formation were identified. Multi-drug resistant isolates were more common among weak (97.9%) versus strong biofilm formers (76%; P = 0.002). Carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae were 91% less likely to form strong biofilm (odds ratio 0.09; 95% confidence interval 0.02–0.33). The statistically significant inverse relationship …

Clozapine And Hematologic Adverse Reactions: Impact Of The Risk Evaluation And Mitigation Strategy Program, Eric P. Borrelli, Y. Lee, Aisling R. Caffrey

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Introduction: In October 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) instituted an update to the mandatory Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program for clozapine to improve safety monitoring of hematologic events. However, the impact of the clozapine REMS program on reporting of hematologic adverse events has not been quantified.

Methods: We assessed adverse event reports for agranulocytosis, granulocytopenia, leukopenia, and neutropenia from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) for a 1-year time period before (October 2014 to September 2015, pre-REMS) and after (October 2015 to September 2016, post-REMS) the implementation of the clozapine REMS program. The AERSMine platform …

Colectomy Averted: A Successful Case Report Of Fidaxomicin Administration Through A Loop Ileostomy For Fulminant, Clostridioides Difficile Infection, Todd Brothers, M. Charpentier, Shivani Shah, Richa Tandon

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Clostridioides difficile infection is considered an urgent public health threat by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recent practice guidelines recommend either vancomycin or fidaxomicin for an initial episode of C. difficile infection and further recommend a subtotal colectomy in severe cases. There are limited data discussing novel approaches for fidaxomicin administration in severe C. difficile infection to avert colectomy. We describe an off-label route of fidaxomicin administration through a loop ileostomy twice daily with successful outcome.

Project ECHO Bibliography

As part of the State Targeted Response to the opioid epidemic, California has adopted the Hub and Spoke model to expand access to medications for opioid use disorder, particularly buprenorphine, throughout the state. By aligning opioid treatment programs as hubs with primary care, office-based practitioners, and other health care settings as spokes, a broader treatment model can reach more people with opioid use disorder, improve access to medications for opioid use disorders, and decrease overdose deaths. Expanding access requires expanding knowledge and intensive implementation support of new practices. This paper describes the rationale, specific activities and anticipated impact of the …
