Pleasure From Erotic Nipple Stimulation, Pre-Pregnancy, As A Predictor Of Successful Initiation Of Breastfeeding, Jessica Jolie Badonsky

Theses

The erotic association with breasts and nipples can be a barrier to breastfeeding due to fear and misunderstanding by breast feeders and health professionals alike (Polomeno, 1999). Little is known about erotic pleasure from nipple stimulation and its correlation to initiate breastfeeding. This study was to determine if erotic pleasure from nipple stimulation prior to pregnancy is a predictor of successful initiation of breastfeeding.

KIP Articles

Bats host virulent zoonotic viruses without experiencing disease. A mechanistic understanding of the impact of bats’ virus hosting capacities, including uniquely constitutive immune pathways, on cellular-scale viral dynamics is needed to elucidate zoonotic emergence. We carried out virus infectivity assays on bat cell lines expressing induced and constitutive immune phenotypes, then developed a theoretical model of our in vitro system, which we fit to empirical data. Best fit models recapitulated expected immune phenotypes for representative cell lines, supporting robust antiviral defenses in bat cells that correlated with higher estimates for within-host viral propagation rates. In general, heightened immune responses limit …

We previously generated a panel of human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against Zika virus (ZIKV) and identified one, ZIKV-116, that shares germline usage with mAbs identified in multiple donors. Here we show that ZIKV-116 interferes with ZIKV infection at a post-cellular attachment step by blocking viral fusion with host membranes. ZIKV-116 recognizes the lateral ridge of envelope protein domain III, with one critical residue varying between the Asian and African strains responsible for differential binding affinity and neutralization potency (E393D). ZIKV-116 also binds to and cross-neutralizes some dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV1) strains, with genotype-dependent inhibition explained by variation in a …

A Narrative Review Of The Role Of Economic Crisis On Health And Healthcare Infrastructure In Three Disparate National Environments, David M. Claborn

College of Health and Human Services

The collapse of a country’s economy can have significant impacts on the health and healthcare infrastructure of the country. This paper compares the collapse of three national economies from widely separated regions: Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and the countries of the former Soviet Union. Despite significant differences in the environments and cultures of these countries, there are some common variables and outcomes shared by most of the countries including effects on healthcare workforce, disproportionate effects on marginalized populations, and resurgence of certain infectious diseases.

Biofilm Remediation By Extracellular Polymeric Substance (Eps) Modification, Matthew Borglin

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

With the help of the Baker Koob endowment this project was able to investigate the novel application of chemical modifiers on mature biofilms as a new potential method for its removal. The major challenge that this project initially faced was the designing an experimental procedure for consistent biofilm production in order for a comparison treatment across sampling surfaces and follow up experiments. However, the consistency was hard to determine until a reliable sampling method was established. Fortunately, after interacting with industry leaders in biofilm remediation technics a methodology was discovered that was recently approved by the Environmental Protection Agency as …

Mandatory And Permissive Reporting Laws: Obligations, Challenges, Moral Dilemmas, And Opportunities, Joel M. Geiderman, Catherine A. Marco

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

The duty to report certain conditions to public health or law enforcement authorities is one that falls on all physicians and other health care workers as part of their duty to protect the public from harm. In an open society, others, such as teachers, clergy, police officers, or simply neighbors, share the responsibility of protecting individuals at risk, often by reporting them to authorities. The emergency physician and others in the emergency department are uniquely positioned to identify people at risk or who pose a risk, and to report them as required or allowed under the law. In some circumstances, …

Background: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli causes diarrhoea, leading to substantial mortality and morbidity in children, but no specific vaccine exists. This trial tested an oral, inactivated, enterotoxigenic E coli vaccine (ETVAX), which has been previously shown to be safe and highly immuongenic in Swedish and Bangladeshi adults. We tested the safety and immunogenicity of ETVAX, consisting of four E coli strains overexpressing the most prevalent colonisation factors (CFA/I, CS3, CS5, and CS6) and a toxoid (LCTBA) administered with or without a double-mutant heat-labile enterotoxin (dmLT) as an adjuvant, in Bangladeshi children.

Methods: We did a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation, age-descending, phase …

Leveraging Eelectronic Health Records To Develop Cardiovascular Risk Profiles For Primary Prevention With Youth Living With Hiv In Multidisciplinary Adolescent Hiv Care Settings, Sitaji Gurung

Dissertations and Theses

Background: HIV infection has shown to be associated with increased risk for, and earlier occurrence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Emerging evidence suggests that detectable viral load (VL) and CD4 ≤ 200 contribute substantially to increased risk of CVD. Cigarette smoking is prevalent in at least 40% of those with HIV, and significantly more common compared to the general population. As many as 33% of adolescents are overweight, and this excess weight leads to lipid abnormalities, and increases in metabolic syndrome. With the newer formulation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) agents available as a component of single tablet regimens (STR), it is …

Effects Of Deepwater Horizon Oil On Feather Structure And Thermoregulation In Gulls: Does Rehabilitation Work?, Katherine Horak, Nicole L. Barrett, Jeremy W. Ellis, Emma M. Campbell, Nicholas G. Dannemiller, Susan A. Shriner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Impacts of large-scale oil spills on avian species are far-reaching.While media attention often focuses on lethal impacts, sub-lethal effects and the impacts of rehabilitation receive less attention. The objective of our study was to characterize effects of moderate external oiling and subsequent rehabilitation on feather structure and thermoregulation in gulls. We captured 30 wild ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) and randomly assigned each individual to an experimental group: 1) controls, 2) rehabilitated birds (externally oiled, rehabilitated by washing), or 3) oiled birds (externally oiled, not rehabilitated). We externally oiled birds with weathered MC252 Deepwater Horizon oil (water for controls) …

Copyright © 2020 by the American Thoracic Society. Rationale: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes significant morbidity and mortality in infants worldwide. Although T-helper type 2 (Th2) cell pathology is implicated in severe disease, the mechanisms underlying the development of immunopathology are incompletely understood. Objectives: We aimed to identify local immune responses associated with severe RSV in infants. Our hypothesis was that disease severity would correlate with enhanced Th2 cellular responses. Methods: Nasal aspirates were collected from infants hospitalized with severe (admitted to the pediatric ICU) or moderate (maintained in the general ward) RSV disease at 5 to 9 days after …

Iron Deficiency And Iron Deficiency Anemia: Implications And Impact In Pregnancy, Fetal Development, And Early Childhood Parameters, Robert T. Means Feb 2020

Iron Deficiency And Iron Deficiency Anemia: Implications And Impact In Pregnancy, Fetal Development, And Early Childhood Parameters, Robert T. Means

ETSU Faculty Works

A normal pregnancy consumes 500–800 mg of iron from the mother. Premenopausal women have a high incidence of marginal iron stores or iron deficiency (ID), with or without anemia, particularly in the less developed world. Although pregnancy is associated with a “physiologic” anemia largely related to maternal volume expansion; it is paradoxically associated with an increase in erythrocyte production and erythrocyte mass/kg. ID is a limiting factor for this erythrocyte mass expansion and can contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes. This review summarizes erythrocyte and iron balance observed in pregnancy; its implications and impact on mother and child; and provides an …
