Expanding pharmacist-driven antimicrobial stewardship efforts in the emergency department (ED) can improve antibiotic management for both admitted and discharged patients. We piloted a pharmacist-driven culture and rapid diagnostic technology (RDT) follow-up program in patients discharged from the ED. This was a single-center, pre- and post-implementation, cohort study examining the impact of a pharmacist-driven culture/RDT follow-up program in the ED. Adult patients discharged from the ED with subsequent positive cultures and/or RDT during the pre- (21 August 2018–18 November 2018) and post-implementation (19 November 2018–15 February 2019) periods were screened for inclusion. The primary endpoints were time from ED discharge to …

The Relationship Between Hand Washing And Hospital-Acquired Infections, Qian Gao
MSN Capstone Projects
Hand hygiene is a hot topic all the time since it is a simple yet effective way to prevent infection. For the staff who work in the hospital, they need to perform hand hygiene thousands of times. Hospital-acquired infections are caused by viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens. The most common types of infections are bloodstream infections, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and surgical site infections. There are many articles that emphasize the benefits of hand hygiene and the decreasing rates of hospital-acquired infections. However, few of these articles focus on the education aspect of hand washing. The author reviews the articles …

Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates
INTRODUCTION: The ideal of evidence-based medicine includes the integration of clinical experience and patient values with research evidence. We introduce clinical decision science, a new framework that includes patient social context to demonstrate this integration, which has been absent from evidence-based medicine sources. METHODS: This is an observational study comparing published articles within the domains of clinical decision science and evidence-based medicine. In a standardized manner, investigators identified and counted instances of social interaction within the publications. RESULTS: Publications of Clinical Decision Science had a higher number of markers of social interaction per paper and greater proportion of papers that …

Fact Or Myth: The Flu Can Be Caused By The Flu Vaccine, Arleigh Wood
Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
To many, the flu vaccine seems like a threat to an otherwise healthy individual. People often get the flu after receiving the flu shot, which does not promote confidence in the general public. These and other reasonings have created a myth that the flu vaccine can cause the flu. Understanding how the vaccination is created and how it interacts with the immune system helps to realize why the flu vaccine cannot cause the virus. For the vaccine to work, adaptive immunity must be activated by the introduction of the viral particles in a safe manner. An effective immune response from …

Agriculture And Nutrition: Promoting Good Health Through Rich Soil, Michelle Dreiling
2020 SACAD Entrants
Did you know that agriculture is essential for good human health? Dr. Dr. Daphne Miller is a practicing physician in California that has spent countless hours studying how agriculture, soil health, and many other natural attributes can affect human health (Miller, 2013). Good soil health can promote positive nutrition intake for human health. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ([CDC], 2018) acknowledges that good nutrition is essential for health promotion and disease prevention. Many American’s diets lack adequate sources of good nutrition. Poor nutrition contributes to many costly diseases, including obesity, heart disease, and some cancers. Agriculture is multifunctional. Agriculture …
Nursing Practice And The Prevention Of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Laura Sherburne
Nursing Practice And The Prevention Of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Laura Sherburne
Nursing Masters Papers
There are numerous healthcare associated infections (HAIs) that individuals can acquire while receiving care in an acute healthcare facility. Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are HAIs that may cause increased lengths of stay, hospital costs, and mortality for patients. CAUTIs may be preventable through evidence-based nursing interventions and care. Using CINAHL, PubMed, and ProQuest, an evidence-based practice inquiry was conducted on the prevention of CAUTIs. Ten articles were chosen based on the relevance to the clinical question and quality of research. The articles were English language, peer-reviewed, and published within the last ten years. The levels of evidence ranged …
Live Cattle Basis Due To Covid-19: Deviations And Convergence, Elliott James Dennis
Live Cattle Basis Due To Covid-19: Deviations And Convergence, Elliott James Dennis
Extension Farm and Ranch Management News
A Fundamental Review on Basis
Basis is defined as the cash minus futures. Cash market reflects today's supply conditions and price. Futures market reflects upcoming supply and demand conditions. If it is anticipated that there will be a period of increasing supplies, futures prices will decline to reflect that information. Likewise, periods of time with expected decreasing supplies, future prices are expected to increase.
Since cash and futures prices can move simultaneously, basis will fluctuate through time. In periods where basis becomes more positive (i.e. basis is said to be strengthening/narrowing) it implies that cash prices are increasing more relative …

Pre Covid-19 Market Conditions Persist & The Stocker Industry Can Dampen The Damage, Elliott James Dennis
Extension Farm and Ranch Management News
First paragraph:
The effects of COVID-19 on the livestock market are well known and felt. Some effects include depressed futures and cash prices, unusual basis patterns, decreased packer bids and sale barn volume, packing plant closures, consumer hording of meat products, and shifting food service products for retail consumption. All these effects occurred as market participants grappled with everchanging government and industry policy which reduced consumer demand and resulted in bottlenecks and increasing supply gluts upstream. Simultaneously reducing demand and increasing supply always cause prices to plummet, and in the case of COVID-19 very rapidly. Some segments of the market …

Vaccines In Current Culture: The Hpv Vaccine Controversy, Alyssa Johnston
Senior Honors Theses
The use of vaccinations has drastically decreased mortality and morbidity rates related to infectious disease and has become an intrinsic part of modern health care. However, the fear of risks related to vaccines has been partially responsible for the decisions of many parents to delay or avoid vaccinating their children. The human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine specifically is one of the most controversial vaccines in current culture due to reports of new onset or exacerbation of autoimmune diseases, infertility, and even death following its administration. This review synthesizes information regarding the relevance and safety of the HPV vaccine, as well …

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a disorder of differentiated B cells in which the inhibition of the proteasome is standard care. The current drug, bortezomib, used to treat MM is ineffective against drug tolerance where 97% of all patients become intolerant within a few years. Imidazoline scaffolds are capable of overcoming that resistance and delaying MM tumor growth. We believe we will be able to effectively yield imidazolines. Synthesis will occur with commercially available starting materials, making the process less …

184— Mortality Rates Of Three Vaccine Preventable Diseases In Historic Rochester, Kayla Carlin
GREAT Day Posters
The purpose of this study is to explore and compare the mortality rates of diphtheria, pertussis, and pneumonia in Rochester, New York from the mid-19th Century until the mid-20th century. The hypothesis of the study is that the proportion of deaths from diphtheria, pertussis, and pneumonia decreased with the presence of preventative initiatives. Public health initiatives about each disease will be used to help explain the mortality trends. Mortality statistics were collected and analyzed using transcription data from Mount Hope Cemetery. While diphtheria rates generally decreased over time, pertussis and pneumonia rates did not change even with new immunization initiatives. …

399— Rates Of Tuberculosis Mortality Rates In Urban And Rural Areas Of New York State Before The Age Of Antibiotics, Jillian Demaria
GREAT Day Posters
From the late nineteenth and early twentieth century industrialization changed many aspects of American life. Mortality rates in the pre World War I era (1838 and 1930) changed due to many improvements of public health. The creation and emphasis over vaccinations, sewage systems, inspections of foods, and overall improvements in living and working conditions improved public health outcomes in all parts of America, in both rural and urban areas. As the changes occurred, tuberculosis mortality rates declined. This study explores death rates of tuberculosis in rural and urban areas, as well as the general population of Rochester, in the nineteenth …

484— Modeling Social Distancing Methods And Their Effectiveness In Combating The Spread Of Ebola, Rachel Fair
GREAT Day Posters
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare but severe disease that is transmitted among humans through direct-contact with, and close proximity to, infected bodily fluids. From 2014-16, West Africa experienced the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, infecting over 28,000 people, and killing over 11,000. Although the symptoms of EVD are treatable, the disease can be extremely deadly, with an average of 50% EVD cases resulting in fatality. In areas where healthcare is scarce and vaccinations are not readily available, the practices of social distancing and self-quarantining have been shown to be highly effective in combating the spread of EVD. 239— The Effect Of Flooding On Water-Borne And Vector-Borne Illnesses In Historic Rochester, Ny, Isabelle Stitt
GREAT Day Posters
The connection between flooding and other extreme water-related weather events with water-borne illnesses is a well-documented issue. Rochester, NY, which lies in the Genesee River valley, receives a significant amount of precipitation due to its proximity to Lake Ontario. Flooding, due to melting snow in the spring and general thunderstorms in the summer, caused the Genesee river to flood often before the construction of the Mt. Morris dam in 1948. Utilizing cemetery records from Mt. Hope cemetery in Rochester, NY, this study explores whether Rochester’s history of flooding had any effect on water-borne or vector-borne illness deaths. The years 1840 …

Increased expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allows tumor cells to be more easily detected by the immune system. In previous research, epigenetic modifiers including the histone deacetylase inhibitor 3 (HDAC3), RGFP966, has been shown to decrease PD-L1 expression. PD-L1 expression inhibits T cell cytotoxicity, and decreasing it can enhance the immune response. We hope to elucidate whether or not HLA-ABC expression similarly decreases upon exposure to the HDAC3 inhibitor which would be detrimental to immune detection. Two breast cancer cell lines that express HLA-ABC are MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. Our initial results show that HLA-ABC is expressed on the MDA-MB-231 …

465— Modeling Vaccine Efficacy For Tuberculosis In A Prison Population, Kaitlyn Mundackal
GREAT Day Posters
Tuberculosis is a highly contagious disease and is particularly problematic in confined communities such as prisons. I simulated how Tuberculosis moves through a prison population and tested how much vaccination effort is needed to control its spread. To explore this, I tested adding ever increasing numbers of randomly placed edges in a network and determined the size of the largest component. Afterwards, I removed edges in the model using two different methods, one illustrating if the edges were removed randomly and the other starting with prisoners that had the most connections, to simulate the effect of vaccination. My results show …
Possible Roles For Essential Oils In Chemoprevention And Suppression Of Cancer, Chad Kirk Lillestolen
Possible Roles For Essential Oils In Chemoprevention And Suppression Of Cancer, Chad Kirk Lillestolen
Senior Honors Theses
Cancer represents one of the costliest and most prevalent diseases to afflict the modern world, even though treatments have evolved steadily over the years and produce an increasingly positive outlook with each development and innovation. Essential oils have been used medicinally- among other purposes- for thousands of years and have begun to attract attention for possible applications to the field of oncology. Numerous investigations and publications have shed light on the possible chemopreventative (antioxidant and antimetastatic) uses of these oils, alongside cancer suppressive (apoptosis-inducing and cytotoxic) abilities that they may possess. With the high annual incidence of cancer and the …

The Pediatric Anti-Viral Immune Response Impairs Neural Stem/Progenitor Cell Activity, Yashika Kamte, Manisha N. Chandwani, Lauren A. O'Donnell
Graduate Student Research Symposium
The neuropathological outcomes of a viral infection in the brain are often age-dependent. Infection of the immature CNS can lead to impairment of neural/stem progenitor cell (NSPCs) activity. NSPCs are multi-potent progenitor cells of the CNS and are responsible for populating the brain with neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes during development. Viral infections may alter NSPC activity via two mechanisms; directly by infection of the NSPC or indirectly due to the anti-viral immune response. Here, we examined the impact of a neurotropic infection on NSPC activity in pediatric mice (postnatal day 10), where brain and immune system development is ongoing. In …
