Best Bets For Accelerating Family Planning In Pakistan: Invest In Community Health Workers, Ali M. Mir, Kiren Khan

Reproductive Health

Integration of trained, equipped, and supported community health workers (CHWs) within a health system is recognized as a proven high impact practice for family planning (FP) services, with evidence from around the world confirming the need to complement facility-based FP services with CHW programs, particularly in areas where people’s access to health care is limited. There is also substantial evidence that delivering essential health services through CHWs can be cost-effective in a diversity of contexts, with a review of FP programs in 10 developing countries revealing that the average cost per couple-year of protection (CYP) was considerably lower among programs …

Gaining A “Foothold” On The Diagnosis Of Leishmaniasis, Brent M. Troy, Rebecca Hart, Navjyot Vidwan, Bethany Hodge

Journal of Refugee & Global Health

Pediatric refugees and immigrants may present with unusual diagnoses due to their extensive migration and potential harsh conditions in travel. Trauma and family separation add to the difficulty of obtaining a history of exposures. We report a case of one of the more commonly neglected tropical diseases, Leishmaniasis. A 15-year-old male refugee patient presented to the hospital with ulcerative lesions to his legs. His migration history was extensive, starting in Central Africa with travel to South America, followed by migration through Central America to Texas. The patient developed ulcerative lesions on his legs, and he was brought to the children’s …

Covid-19 And Domestic Travel Restrictions, Katherine Florey Aug 2020

Covid-19 And Domestic Travel Restrictions, Katherine Florey

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

The strict controls that many jurisdictions, including most U.S. states, established to contain the COVID-19 pandemic have proven difficult to sustain over time, and most places are moving to lift them. Internationally, many plans to ease lockdowns have retained some form of travel restrictions, including the “green zone” plans adopted by France and Spain, which limit travel between regions with widespread community transmission of COVID-19 and those without it. By contrast, most U.S. states lifting shelter-in-place orders have opted to remove limits on movement as well. This Essay argues that this situation is unwise: it tends to create travel patterns …

Vampire Bats: Preparing For Range Expansion Into The U.S., Michael J. Bodenchuk, David L. Bergman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The common vampire bat apparently is expanding its range northwards in Mexico and seems poised to enter the southern United States. Climate models predict suitable habitat in the U.S. in south Texas and parts of southern Arizona. While vampire bats’ northward range expansion is not unexpected, the fact that this species brings a strain of rabies that impacts livestock and people warrants a strategic response. Annual economic damages from bats are estimated between $7M and $9M, largely associated with deaths of livestock from rabies. To prepare for the emerging rabies issue, USDA Wildlife Services programs in Texas and Arizona have …

BACKGROUND: South Asian region has been experiencing the increasing burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) primarily due to over and irrational prescribing of antibiotics. Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are the leading cause of out-patients' visits in the region. Despite commonly known viral aetiology, ARI is the single largest reason for antibiotic prescriptions contributing the exponential growth of AMR in the region. Collated data on antibiotic consumption for ARI at outpatients and resistance pattern of respiratory pathogen are lacking in the region. METHODS: MEDLINE, Cochrane, CINAHL Plus (EBSCO), and Web of Science will be searched for eligible papers. Titles and abstracts, and …

Honors Thesis

Influenza is a persistent threat to individual and global health. Seasonal influenza kills nearly 500,000 people globally each year. Influenza viruses have circulated within the human population, causing a significant disease burden. In order to create the most effective antiviral therapies, knowledge concerning all lineages of influenza must be studied accurately and thoroughly. The influenza virus itself is not always responsible for these mortalities, rather, the secondary bacterial infections associated with death. In order to protect the population and examine the secondary infections that arise, the kinetics of influenza must be studied entirely. To understand the kinetics, researchers are turning …

Intensive Animal Farming Conditions Are A Major Threat To Global Health, Cynthia Schuck-Paim

Animal Sentience

Wiebers & Feigin accurately propose that reducing the risks posed by infectious disease outbreaks and other global health challenges will depend critically on transitioning away from intensive animal farming practices. Creating the right incentive structure for this transition to happen is one of the great challenges in the years to come, but a much-needed step to ensure the health and well-being of current and future generations.

Genetic Identification And Drug-Resistance Characterization Of, Jorge Cervantes, Noemí Yokobori, Bo-Young Hong

Faculty Research 2020

Clinical management of tuberculosis (TB) in endemic areas is often challenged by a lack of resources including laboratories for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) culture. Traditional phenotypic drug susceptibility testing for Mtb is costly and time consuming, while PCR-based methods are limited to selected target loci. We herein utilized a portable, USB-powered, long-read sequencing instrument (MinION), to investigate Mtb genomic DNA from clinical isolates to determine the presence of anti-TB drug-resistance conferring mutations. Data analysis platform EPI2ME and antibiotic-resistance analysis using the real time ARMA workflow, identified Mtb species as well as extensive resistance gene profiles. The approach was highly sensitive, being …

Health Conditions And An Older Population Increase Covid-19 Risks In Rural America, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson discusses the likely influence that the age structure and the incidence of pre-existing health conditions have on the risks of those exposed to COVID-19 in rural and urban counties in the United States.

Johnson reports that the rural population is at higher risk from COVID-19 because it is older and has higher rates of pre-existing health conditions. Rural areas currently have lower COVID-19 case and death rates, but these rates are rising faster than in urban areas. Nearly 32 percent of the rural counties at high risk from COVID-19 still have relatively few cases …

Potential Transmission Of Sars-Cov-2 Via Robot Pets In Care Homes, Hannah Bradwell, Ray Jones, Mar Soler-Lopez Aug 2020

Potential Transmission Of Sars-Cov-2 Via Robot Pets In Care Homes, Hannah Bradwell, Ray Jones, Mar Soler-Lopez

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Robots pets have reported potential in improving wellbeing for older adults and people with dementia, including through reducing depression, agitation, loneliness and medication use. Such devices are becoming widespread in care homes, and may be particularly beneficial at present, in light of increased loneliness and social isolation as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. However, we conducted work previously that suggested robot pets may transmit bacteria between care home residents, and we tested the efficacy of a cleaning procedure to aid in safe use of the devices. Here, in light of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we reflect on the plausibility of viral …
