Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensors And Triboelectric Energy Harvesters Using Laser-Assisted Patterning Process For Flexible Hybrid Electronic Applications, Valliammai Palaniappan

Masters Theses

This work focuses on the design, fabrication and characterization of novel flexible capacitive pressure sensors and triboelectric energy harvesters using laser-assisted patterning process for flexible hybrid electronic applications. Initially, the capacitive pressure sensor was developed by fabricating a set of polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) dielectric films with pyramid shaped micro-structures using a laser-assisted patterning process. The pressure sensor consists of two electrodes (top and bottom) that were fabricated by depositing silver (Ag) on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) using additive screen-printing process. Finally, the pressure sensor was assembled by attaching the top and bottom Ag electrodes to the smooth side of pyramid shaped …

A Multimodal Approach For Monitoring Driving Behavior And Emotions, Arash Tavakoli, Vahid Balali, Arsalan Heydarian

Mineta Transportation Institute

Studies have indicated that emotions can significantly be influenced by environmental factors; these factors can also significantly influence drivers’ emotional state and, accordingly, their driving behavior. Furthermore, as the demand for autonomous vehicles is expected to significantly increase within the next decade, a proper understanding of drivers’/passengers’ emotions, behavior, and preferences will be needed in order to create an acceptable level of trust with humans. This paper proposes a novel semi-automated approach for understanding the effect of environmental factors on drivers’ emotions and behavioral changes through a naturalistic driving study. This setup includes a frontal road and facial camera, a …

Participation In Sporting Activities As A Mechanism For Enhancing Science Instruction, Erin Roades Jun 2020

Participation In Sporting Activities As A Mechanism For Enhancing Science Instruction, Erin Roades

Dissertations

ABSTRACT

After students have taken years of science classes, they still believe science content is disconnected to the “real” world or to their lives. Teaching without attention to relevance results in decreased motivation for learning and negative attitudes toward science. An instructional method incorporating physical, sport-related activities was used to develop relevance and enhance achievement in science compared to typical/traditional science instructional methods. In the typical method, science lessons consisted of front-loading science content through direct instruction followed by a laboratory activity to confirm lesson content. The experimental teaching strategy used was “Relevance Integration for Teaching Science using Sports Exploration” …

Human physiological signals are inherently rhythmic and have a hallmark feature in that even distant intrasignal measurements are related to each other. This relationship is termed long-range correlation and has been recognized as an indicator of the optimal state of the observed physiological systems, among which the locomotor system. Loss of long-range correlations has been found as a result of aging as well as disease, which can be evaluated with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Recently, DFA and the scaling exponent α have been employed for understanding the degeneration of temporal regulation of human walking biorhythms in, for example, Parkinson disease …

Environments are unique in terms of structural composition and evoked human experience. Previous studies suggest that natural compared to built environments may increase positive emotions. Humans in natural environments also demonstrate greater performance on attention-based tasks. Few studies have investigated cortical mechanisms underlying these phenomena or probed these differences from a neural perspective. Using a temporally sensitive electrophysiological approach, we employ an event-related, implicit passive viewing task to demonstrate that in humans, a greater late positive potential (LPP) occurs with exposure to built than natural environments, resulting in a faster return of activation to pre-stimulus baseline levels when viewing natural …

Phrenology, Physical Anthropology And Ethnology: Nineteenth-Century Race Science And The Foundations Of Eurocentrism, Mckenzie Jayne Leeds

History

This paper explores phrenology, physical anthropology, and ethnology--each a nineteenth-century scientific discipline that significantly influenced racial beliefs. These sciences were integral in forming and perpetuating racial hierarchies and the belief of perceived European superiority. The main goal of this project was to deconstruct the European superiority narrative, and to argue that these disciplines created a network of continued racism.

Mechanisms Of Bak Activation In The Initiation Of Mitochondrial Apoptosis, Geetika Singh Jun 2020

Mechanisms Of Bak Activation In The Initiation Of Mitochondrial Apoptosis, Geetika Singh

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Mitochondrial apoptosis is crucial for normal mammalian development and adult homeostasis being regulated by B-Cell Lymphoma-2 (BCL-2) proteins. Deregulation of BCL-2 proteins form the basis for myriad of human pathologies including cancer and autoimmune diseases. Therefore, BCL-2 proteins are considered key therapeutic targets. BCL-2 homologous antagonist/killer (BAK) is an effector of outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) pemeabilization or mitochondrial poration. Despite progress in understanding BAK-mediated mitochondrial poration, the underlying multi-step mechanism is not clearly defined. Here, we provide mechanistic details on the early steps in this process related to BAK activation, including transient direct activation and autoactivation. We demonstrate for the …

The Detrimental Side Effects Of Retinol : Beyond Beauty Products, Michelle W. Lee May 2020

The Detrimental Side Effects Of Retinol : Beyond Beauty Products, Michelle W. Lee

University Honors Theses

In recent years, the beauty industry has profited off our culture’s growing vanity and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. With no certified way to freeze age, many consumers turn to skincare and makeup products that implement retinol as a means to combat wrinkles, even out skin tone, and treat acne. In this meta-analysis, I explore the detrimental side effects of retinol. As consumers of beauty products get younger and younger, they are more susceptible to potential side effects due to their early ages starting the compounds and their prolonged use. Here I examine three potentially dangerous conditions caused …

The Freedom To Move: Dance/Movement Therapy And Survivors Of Trafficking - An Evolving Practice, Rebecca Richardson

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Abstract

Human/Sex trafficking is the use of force or coercion for the purpose of exploiting humans (mainly women) for sex or labor. Consequences of being trafficked include psychological and physical symptoms that may hinder the survivors for the rest of their life if not treated. Survivors of human trafficking are infrequently researched and have limited evidence-based methods of treatment. Even fewer studies have been conducted involving the use of dance/movement therapy with survivors of trafficking. dance/movement therapy is vital to treatment because of its focus on integrating the body with the mind. In this literature review I discuss the effects …

Post-Lysosomal Cholesterol Trafficking: Novel Tools And Insights, Mckenna Rae Feltes May 2020

Post-Lysosomal Cholesterol Trafficking: Novel Tools And Insights, Mckenna Rae Feltes

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Cholesterol is an essential mammalian lipid. It is a major component of cellular membranes, a precursor molecule for the synthesis of hormones and bile acids, and a regulator of protein function. Although cholesterol is synthesized, de novo, in the endoplasmic reticulum, cells principally meet cholesterol requirements through uptake of lipoprotein particles. Lipoprotein-derived cholesterol is transported to the lysosome where it is transferred from the soluble lysosomal protein, NPC2, to limiting-lysosomal membrane protein NPC1. Cholesterol is then re-distributed to other cellular membranes in order to fulfill organellar cholesterol requirements; however, the cellular machineries involved in coordinating this distribution are poorly characterized. …

Band Power Analysis Of The Eeg Frequency Spectrum: An Evaluation Of Interictal Periods Of The Migraine Phase Using An Eyes-Open Vs. Eyes-Closed Resting State Paradigm, Andrea Perez-Munoz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Migraine is a primary headache disorder characterized by abnormal cortical activity acrossmigraine phases. However, less is known about electroencephalographic activity present duringasymptomatic periods of the migraine cycle or during resting-state conditions. Given the theorythat these testing conditions may reflect more permanent cortical states, the present studyexamined the interacting role of resting-state conditions (eyes-open vs. eyes-closed) andheadache diagnosis (migraine vs. control) on absolute band power across the EEG frequencyspectrum. In-line with previous research, we hypothesized that interictal periods of the migrainephase would be characterized by a difference in alpha frequency and an increase in slow-waveactivity compared to controls. We further predicted …
