Piloting A Scalable Workflow To Identify Drivers Of Mammalian Aging Using C. Elegans, Ariella Lucia Coler-Reilly Colasanti
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The aging population in developed countries has prompted experts to warn of the impending “silver tsunami” of older adults poised to overload already strained healthcare systems. Advanced age is the primary risk factor for most chronic diseases, and the vast majority of the elderly population is diagnosed with at least one such condition, if not several. The field of geroscience has emerged to study the processes responsible for age-related decline and devise methods to reduce this burden. A major branch of geroscience is the genetics of aging, including examining gene expression changes over time as well as exploring how genetic …
Dietary Manipulations Of The Undernourished Infant Microbiome, Cyrus Zhou
Dietary Manipulations Of The Undernourished Infant Microbiome, Cyrus Zhou
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Today, undernutrition affects approximately 150 million children worldwide. During the first two years of life, the healthy gut microbial community undergoes a series of predictable developmental transitions. These transitions are delayed in undernourished children resulting in microbiota “immaturity.” In a foundational study, immature gut microbial communities from undernourished children and normally developing communities from chronologically age-matched healthy children living in the same area were transplanted into groups of germ-free mice consuming the same diet – one representative of what consumed by the study population. Compared mice with a mature gut microbiome, mice with an immature gut microbiome had impaired weight …

Using Somatic Experiencing To Mitigate Symptoms Of Secondary Traumatic Stress In Female Helping Professionals, Jillian Christie Guinta
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological and quantitative study explored the lived experiences of a dozen women within the veterinary, social work, and nursing communities and how secondary traumatic stress impacts their lives. Faced with unanticipated patient illnesses, facilitating compassionate end-of-life procedures, and rapidly moving from one emotional state to the next between patients, professionals are carrying tremendous unprocessed emotional burdens that can affect them physiologically and psychologically. Somatic Experiencing (SE) indicates tremendous promise in rehabilitating practitioners’ trauma-impacted nervous systems by offering techniques to release emotional stress and re-regulate the nervous system (Kuhfuß et al., 2023). This mixed-methods study explored the world of these …

Comparative Evaluation Of Segmentation-Based And Pose-Assisted Head Temperature Estimation From Uas Thermal Imagery Under Controlled Conditions, Owais Ahmed, Justin A. Guye, Muhammad Hassan Tanveer, Adeel Khalid
Faculty Articles
This paper presents a vision-based framework for detecting humans and estimating head surface temperature from aerial thermal imagery acquired by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). A comparative evaluation of recent object detection architectures was conducted to identify the most stable and reliable model for thermal human detection under varying flight altitudes. The selected framework integrates two head localization strategies, namely, segmentation-based mask slicing and pose-assisted keypoint localization, to extract head regions and compute per-pixel temperature values from radiometric metadata. The results show that cross-domain inference using pre-trained YOLOv11 models achieves reliable human detection across controlled outdoor environments. Between the two pipelines, …

Dft Modeling Of Steroid–Phospholipid Noncovalent Interactions: Conformations, Binding Energy, And Solvation Effects, Sohan Mothkur
Dft Modeling Of Steroid–Phospholipid Noncovalent Interactions: Conformations, Binding Energy, And Solvation Effects, Sohan Mothkur
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Steroids (STRs) have essential roles in human physiology and disease, regulating processes such as metabolism and immunity. STRs exert their effects through receptor-mediated pathways and by modulating cell membrane properties. STRs can intercalate into phospholipid (PL) bilayers, altering membrane properties that can influence downstream biological processes. While STR-protein interactions have been widely studied, little is known about how STR-PL interactions influence membrane properties. In this study, we used density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the interactions between testosterone (TST) and cholesterol (CHOL) with three representative PLs: phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylserine (PS), and phosphatidylglycerol (PG). STR-PL complexes were modeled using an aqueous …
The Sentience Of The Horse And The Philosophy Of Natural Horsemanship: Implications For Hrd Leadership, Rob E. Carpenter
The Sentience Of The Horse And The Philosophy Of Natural Horsemanship: Implications For Hrd Leadership, Rob E. Carpenter
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper advances a biologically grounded philosophy of leadership through the lens of Natural Horsemanship. It reframes leadership as an embodied, sentient process rather than a purely cognitive or behavioral construct. Drawing from neuroscience, affective biology, sociology, and human resource development (HRD), it proposes that the horse–human relationship provides a living model for relational intelligence. The horse’s exquisite attunement to human emotion— mediated through limbic regulation and bio-behavioral synchrony—reveals that influence arises not from authority but from coherence. Leadership, like horsemanship, is a reciprocal act of co-regulation in which trust, safety, and communication are revealed through physiology before language. By …

Shadowrunning The Human: Harebrained Schemes' Shadowrun Series And Transhumanism, Alexander P. Orelup
Shadowrunning The Human: Harebrained Schemes' Shadowrun Series And Transhumanism, Alexander P. Orelup
English Theses & Dissertations
I argue that Harebrained Schemes’ video game series Shadowrun critiques transhumanism in three distinct yet related ways: in terms of religion, political control, and identity capitalism. In doing so, Shadowrun attempts to counter claims that video games are an inherently transhumanist medium and provides an opportunity for players to resist a potential transhuman future. This further elucidates the trends and perceptions of transhumanism within American culture around the time period. I utilize a variety of methodologies in my argument, ranging from cultural studies, narratology, ludology, and close reading in order to grasp all of the audio-visual and gameplay elements that …

Insights Into Stroke Risk And Prediction For Underweight Individuals, Saeed Awad M. Alqahtani, Moutasem S. Aboonq
Neurosciences
This review explores the relationship between underweight status and stroke risk and outcomes. Although the impact of obesity on stroke is well-documented, the harmful effects of being underweight are often overlooked. Drawing on evidence from observational studies, case-control studies, and meta-analyses, this review highlights that underweight individuals face increased mortality, poorer functional recovery, and higher rates of major adverse cardiovascular events and recurrent strokes post-stroke. Challenges in stroke prediction for this population are examined, including the limited research focus, shortcomings of existing risk assessment tools such as the CHA2DS2-VASc score, and population-specific factors affecting underweight prevalence …

Biodeterrence In An Era Of Convergent Threats, James Giordano
Biodeterrence In An Era Of Convergent Threats, James Giordano
Strategic Insights
This commentary examines the growing need for a comprehensive biodeterrence strategy in response to the convergence of biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and cross-domain warfare capabilities. Dr. Giordano argues that advances in life sciences, combined with the activities of peer competitors, are transforming the biological domain into a contested strategic space where biological effects intersect with other forms of warfare. Traditional biodefense approaches are no longer sufficient. Instead, this piece calls for an integrated biodeterrence framework that combines biosurveillance, intelligence, public health, and operational planning. Recommendations include developing a Department of War–wide biodeterrence strategy, expanding detection and attribution capabilities, strengthening biotechnology intelligence, …

Drought‐induced tree mortality underscores the need for improved physiological models to predict tree responses to water stress. We employed a hysteresis modelling approach analyzing diel water absorption and desorption cycles to understand drought‐induced shifts in physiological thresholds. We applied this approach to sap flow (Js), stem diameter fluctuation (SDF), stem volumetric water content fluctuation (SVWCF), and vapour pressure deficit (VPD), datasets from two throughfall reduction experiments in contrasting ecosystems: a cloud forest (Peru) and a temperate forest (USA). Using a generalised transcendental equation, we quantified five diurnal hysteresis loops (Js:VPD, Js:SDF, Js:SVWCF, SDF:VPD, SVWCF:VPD) and derived hysteresis parameters (centroids, area, …

New Developments In Inhibition Of The Sweet Environment In A Variety Of Corrosive Media: A Review, Wasan Hameed, Khalid Rashid, Anees Khadom
Engineering and Technology Journal
This paper aims to look at how pipeline steel and crude oil storage tanks resist corrosion in aqueous carbon dioxide (CO2) environments. To this aim, we have studied different inhibitors, particularly the heterocyclic inhibitor, which is used to prevent mild steel corrosion in various situations. On mild steel, the corrosion-prevention mechanism of heterocyclic inhibitors is also investigated. CO2 corrosion is the most frequent and dreaded type of corrosion in the oil and gas industry, and corrosion inhibitors are the most effective way to fight CO2 corrosion in mild steel. Nonetheless, continual exposure to pollutants and corrosion causes such as sulfur …

Influence Of Exercise Training On Nitric Oxide Pathways And Their Physiological Effects, Jonas Benjamim, Stephen J Bailey, Leonardo Da Silva Gonçalves, Mia Burleigh, Mario Siervo, Andrew R Coggan, Raúl Bescos
School of Health Professions
Nitric oxide (NO) is a critical signalling molecule in cardiovascular, metabolic, and muscular function. Endogenous NO production occurs via two primary metabolic pathways: 1) the classical nitric oxide synthases (NOS) pathway, and 2) the alternative (nitrate-nitrite-NO) pathway, in which inorganic nitrate (NO 3 -) is sequentially reduced to nitrite (NO 2 -) and other NO intermediates (e.g., S-nitrosothiol). The latter pathway relies heavily on the oral microbiota, which catalyze the two-electron partial reduction of NO 3 - to NO 2 -, which is influenced by oral physiology, microbial composition and salivary flow. While the role of exercise training in enhancing …
