The Effect Of Acute Consumption Of Overtime Essential Amino Acids Sports Drink On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness In The Older Sedentary Population, Andi Johnson, Grant Wagner, Abraham Gomez, Jerene Yazzie, Klaudia Szych, Matthew A. Barlow Phd
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Essential amino acids are necessary for nutrition whether obtained by digestion of proteins or by oral supplementation of amino acids. The elderly experience loss of skeletal muscles and decrease in their strength and function, which can lead to poor quality of life. Increased quantity and quality of proteins stimulates muscle protein synthesis that can help combat this natural aging process. Purpose: The aim of this study was to see if consumption of essential amino acid drink high concentrations of leucin (2040 mg/serving) during exercise will attenuate the condition of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness in the elderly. Also, we aimed to …

Raw Veganism: The Human Diet, Carlo Alvaro
Publications and Research
In this chapter, I present some compelling evidence that points to the conclusion that the human species has a specific diet, which is a raw vegan diet of fresh fruit, tender leafy greens, and a moderate amount of nuts and seeds. Out of the hundreds of thousands of species in the world, the only one—ours—cooks food. Not surprisingly, our species is the only one that suffers from numerous maladies. In other words, the argument is that the consumption of cooked food (especially animal-based) is unhealthful and undermines our nature. I present undeniable evidence, from evolutionary science to nutrition science, showing …

Introduction: Previous studies have linked short sleep duration, poor sleep quality, and late sleep timing with lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children. However, almost all studies relied solely on self-reported sleep information, and most studies were conducted in high-income countries. To address these gaps, we studied both device-measured and self-reported sleep characteristics in relation to HRQoL in a sample of children from 12 countries that vary widely in terms of economic and human development. Methods: The study sample included 6,626 children aged 9-11 years from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Finland, India, Kenya, Portugal, South Africa, the United …

A Neural Mechanism for Capnotaxis in the Naked Mole-Rat
The Naked Mole-Rat (NM-R) is a small hairless rodent that has thrived underground in the Horn of Africa for the past 40 million years. It was first discovered in 1847, but has only been maintained in captivity and studied as a laboratory animal over the past 40 years. To date, more than 400 scientific papers have been published on this species. This is relatively few compared to established lab animals like rats and mice, but those papers contain a trove of information that has changed our understanding of the constraints of …

Love, Language, And Linear Algebra: Linguistic Modeling Of Personality And Mate Preference, Caleb Z. Marshall, Erin M. Buchanan, Melissa Duncan Fallone
Modern Psychological Studies
This study utilized Latent Semantic Analysis to determine whether similarities in personality predicted similarities in responses to a romantic writing prompt (Landauer & Dumais, 1997). From participants’ writing samples, we calculated thematic cosines (a measure of relatedness) between each male and female participant. Participants also completed the Big Five Personality Questionnaire Short Form (Morizet, 2014). Extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness were related to cosines, which suggested small-medium relationships from personality traits to written responses. This relationship was consistent with previous studies; therefore, Latent Semantic Analysis may be useful in quantifying mate preference, especially when alongside traditional survey methods. We conclude with …

Recent discoveries demonstrate a critical role for circadian rhythms and sleep in immune system homeostasis. Both innate and adaptive immune responses - ranging from leukocyte mobilization, trafficking, and chemotaxis to cytokine release and T cell differentiation -are mediated in a time of day-dependent manner. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently sponsored an interdisciplinary workshop, "Sleep Insufficiency, Circadian Misalignment, and the Immune Response," to highlight new research linking sleep and circadian biology to immune function and to identify areas of high translational potential. This Review summarizes topics discussed and highlights immediate opportunities for delineating clinically relevant connections among biological rhythms, …

Comfort is a major criterion for footwear selection. Previous studies have suggested that physical properties were not enough to predict comfort and psychological factors could also affect the perception. To understand comfort, this study examined the effect of controlled shoe description and price cue on the perception of comfort. Furthermore, this study also examined the running biomechanics in response to footwear conditions of differing comfort. Fifteen runners completed treadmill running tests in two conditions: Shoe A and Shoe B. The same pair of neutral running shoes was used in both conditions, yet, Shoe B was described to be the “latest …

Analyses Of The 2019 Nobel Prize In Physiology Or Medicine: Molecular Machinery For Cellular Oxygen Level Response, Neyda V. Gilman
Library Scholarship
Gregg L. Semenza, William G Kaelin, Jr, and Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe were awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine on October 7, 2019. Their work led to the understanding of how cells recognize and adapt to varying oxygen levels. Hypoxia-inducible nuclear factors play an essential role in this mechanism by turning on other genes that work towards increasing oxygen levels in hypoxic environments. Other vital pieces of the machinery include von Hippel-Lindau proteins and prolyl hydroxylation. Due to the necessity of oxygen in numerous human physiological systems, this discovery will likely have nearly immeasurable impacts on human …
Effect Of Sedative Music And Scheduled Rest On Anxiety, Pain, And Myocardial Oxygen Demand During Chair Rest In Adult Postoperative Open-Heart Patients, Jo A. Voss
Dissertations
Open-heart surgery patients in ICU report anxiety and pain with chair rest despite administration of opioid analgesics. In addition, chair rest increases myocardial oxygen demand (MVO2). Non-pharmacological, complementary methods (such as sedative music and scheduled rest) used to reduce anxiety, pain, and MVO2 during chair rest warranted further investigation. The conceptual framework was based on the transactional model of stress and coping. A 3-group pretest-posttest repeated measures experimental design examined the effect of music and rest on anxiety, pain sensation, and pain distress and MVO2 during chair rest in adult postoperative open-heart surgery patients.

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Introducing problem-solving based methods of pedagogy is one approach to engage students early in their careers with developing analytic and diagnostic skills. PBL approaches in anatomy and medical teaching are a logical extension of clinical case studies, wherein an example of a pathology or clinical procedure is provided, and students must ascertain the anatomical and/or physiological basis for it. Students report a deeper understanding of material presented in clinical case studies, as the ‘real world’ relevance and importance is immediately clear (Cliff and Wright, 1996).
Identification Of A Novel Disorder With Cholestasis, Liver Fibrosis And Congenital Diarrhea Due To Organic Solute Transporter Alpha Deficiency, Emily Gao
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
BACKGROUND: Much of our understanding of normal liver pathophysiology comes from studying patients with liver disease who remain undiagnosed after a comprehensive workup. Searching for diagnoses among such cohorts has benefits both for the underserved patients with idiopathic liver disease, but also for science as a whole. Unbiased genomic analysis of patients with undiagnosed disease has yielded remarkable results, including clinically actionable diagnoses in children and adults, as well as the discovery of novel genetic diseases. Thus, we posit that among pediatric patients with undiagnosed liver disease, there may be previously unrecognized Mendelian causes.
METHODS: We report a 2.5 year …

The Impact Of Exercise In Spaceflight And Microgravity Environments, William Bybee
The Impact Of Exercise In Spaceflight And Microgravity Environments, William Bybee
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Since mankind’s first spaceflight, a significant barricade in reaching distant planets has been the damaging effects of microgravity upon the human body. Effects range from loss in bone mineral density and severe muscle atrophy to autoimmune disorders. The most effective countermeasure of these effects to date is exercise. Implementation of exercise in microgravity is not an easy task, so various specialized equipment must be utilized to effectively administer it. Even with this equipment, exercise as it is currently used does not entirely prevent body systems from undergoing detrimental changes. New modalities and implementations are currently being investigated that may significantly …

Judging With A Sniff: Can Horses Associate Scents With Trained Behaviors?, Aiden Juge
Theses & ETDs
Past research has shown that horses are able to learn via positive reinforcement-based training and can discriminate between a variety of olfactory stimuli. This study investigates whether horses can learn to respond to olfactory cues with trained behaviors. It was expected that horses would learn to produce specific behaviors in response to olfactory stimuli. Using positive reinforcement, three horses were trained in a set of four head movement behaviors, each associated with a different scent, and subsequently tested via presentation of the scent cues. Results indicated that horses did not learn to associate scents with specific behaviors, but did learn …

Determination Of N-Linked Glycosylation Changes In Hepatocellular Carcinoma And The Associated Glycoproteins For Enhanced Biomarker Discovery And Therapeutic Targets, Connor Allen West
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
With hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remaining as the fifth most common cancer in the world, causing more than 700,000 deaths annually, the need for reliable, early stage diagnoses and preventive treatments is crucial. While serum glycoproteins are hepatic in origin, making them excellent targets for HCC biomarkers, they can originate from both cancerous and non-cancerous regions and direct analysis of cancerous tissue itself is lacking. To counteract this, I hypothesized that direct tissue analysis combined with proteomic analysis could be utilized to identify more potential targets specific to HCC for early detection. This was done with a primary focus on glycosylation—as …
Identification Of Previously Unknown Interactions Between G Protein-Coupled Receptors And Receptor Activity-Modifying Proteins, Emily Margaretha Lorenzen
Identification Of Previously Unknown Interactions Between G Protein-Coupled Receptors And Receptor Activity-Modifying Proteins, Emily Margaretha Lorenzen
Student Theses and Dissertations
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are known to interact with several other classes of integral membrane proteins. However, the extent of these interactions and their role in regulating GPCR-mediated transmembrane signaling is not well understood. For example, receptor activity-modifying proteins (RAMPs), a family of single transmembrane proteins with only three members, are ubiquitously expressed and have been shown to interact with several different GPCRs. Most research to date has focused on the ability of RAMPs to modulate the function of several GPCRs in the secretin-like GPCR family. GPCR-RAMP interactions were shown to affect the ligand binding affinity of two different secretin-like …
