Matching Search Engine Responses To User’S Domain Expertise Level, Marcos Calvo, Jakub Kriz, Jakob Zwiener

Defensive Publications Series

A user’s query to a search engine or virtual assistant may reasonably be answered at several levels of complexity. In current search or information-retrieval engines, the user’s domain expertise is not typically accounted for when providing a response. Thus, even if the answer is correct, it may not be appropriate for the user given their prior knowledge about the topic. This disclosure describes techniques that, with user permission, determine a user’s domain expertise and select an answer appropriate to the user’s level in the domain of the query.

On Characterizing Quantum Processes And Detectors, Kevin Valson Jacob

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In 2009, physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Colorado, Boulder developed what could arguable be called the first rudimentary quantum computer [1]. The past decade has seen unprecedented improvements in quantum information science culminating in the demonstration of quantum supremacy --- that quantum computers can solve problems that are impractical to be solved on the best supercomputers [2]. This remarkable progress necessitates the development of techniques to characterize the quantum devices that are being developed. In my thesis, I will focus on such devices that manipulate and detect light.

In Chapter 1, I will introduce the …

Design And Analysis Of A Piezoelectric Pulse Wave Velocity Sensor, Haley Richards, Andrew Closson, John Xj Zhang

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) is strongly correlated with blood pressure and a valuable biomarker in assessing hypertension. This report evaluates the feasibility of noninvasive blood pressure determination from piezoelectric PWV measurements. A wearable piezoelectric prototype was developed to detect PWV in the radial artery, and a computational model of the sensor was designed to simulate a piezoelectric sensor response under ideal conditions. These methods provide insight into the relationship between PWV and blood pressure, and the ability of piezoelectric materials to detect blood flow characteristics. This work lays the groundwork for future device development in this field.

The microbiome influences health and disease through complex networks of host genetics, genomics, microbes, and environment. Identifying the mechanisms of these interactions has remained challenging. Systems genetics in laboratory mice (Mus musculus) enables data-driven discovery of biological network components and mechanisms of host-microbial interactions underlying disease phenotypes. To examine the interplay among the whole host genome, transcriptome, and microbiome, we mapped QTL and correlated the abundance of cecal messenger RNA, luminal microflora, physiology, and behavior in a highly diverse Collaborative Cross breeding population. One such relationship, regulated by a variant on chromosome 7, was the association of Odoribacter …

Electronic Image Detectability Under Varying Illumination Conditions, Jeremy J. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Light in the built environment plays an essential role in the vision and the health of humans through non-visual receptors in the eyes. Unfortunately, image analysts and other Air Force personnel who engage in the detection of objects on softcopy displays are often required to work in very dimly-lit or dark environments as higher illumination reduces the contrast of displayed information. Literature has shown that increases in light exposure improves circadian rhythm entrainment and reduces the negative health consequences of insufficient lighting. This research examines the effects of indoor lighting to determine if increases in ambient illumination or changes to …
