Struggle For Sovereignty: An African-American Colonization Attempt And Delicate Independence In Mid-Nineteenth Century Central America, Matthew D. Harris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis uses a series of United States foreign relations documents centered around an 1862 attempt by Abraham Lincoln to colonize parts of Central America with freed African Americans. Traditionally, these communications have been used by historians for U.S. foreign relations or Black resettlement history. Here, instead, this collection is used to display the major threats to Central American sovereignty in the mid-nineteenth century in their own words. The collection reveals that two of the threats were foreign imperialistic thought and racial instability. However, the third, and ultimately most destabilizing threat to the region, was the five nations' rivalry amongst …

Emergence Of Oscillations In A Simple Epidemic Model With Demographic Data, Meredith Greer, Raj Saha, Alex Gogliettino, Chialin Yu, Kyle Zollo-Venecek Jan 2020

Emergence Of Oscillations In A Simple Epidemic Model With Demographic Data, Meredith Greer, Raj Saha, Alex Gogliettino, Chialin Yu, Kyle Zollo-Venecek

All Faculty Scholarship

A simple susceptible–infectious–removed epidemic model for smallpox, with birth and death rates based on historical data, produces oscillatory dynamics with remarkably accurate periodicity. Stochastic population data cause oscillations to be sustained rather than damped, and data analysis regarding the oscillations provides insights into the same set of population data. Notably, oscillations arise naturally from the model, instead of from a periodic forcing term or other exogenous mechanism that guarantees oscillation: the model has no such mechanism. These emergent natural oscillations display appropriate periodicity for smallpox, even when the model is applied to different locations and populations. The model and datasets, …

The year 2020 has been most challenging for many people all over the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has left almost no one’s life untouched. George Floyd’s death and other race-related incidents also unsettled the world to its core. Ancient lamentation resonates with us today: “How lonely sits the city that once was full of people” (Lamentations 1:1a, NRSV). The statistics help tell the story of this year. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2020) and Johns Hopkins University & Medicine (2020) has confirmed more than 33 million COVID-19 cases worldwide and more than one million deaths in 216 countries. The United …
