Educational Benefits And Cognitive Health Life Expectancies: Racial/Ethnic, Nativity, And Gender Disparities, Marc A. Garcia, Brian Downer, Chi-Tsun Chiu, Joseph L. Saenz, Kasim Ortiz, Rebeca Wong
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Background and Objectives: To examine racial/ethnic, nativity, and gender differences in the benefits of educational attainment on cognitive life expectancies among older adults in the United States.
Design and Methods: We used data from the Health and Retirement Study (1998-2014) to estimate Sullivan-based life tables of cognitively healthy, cognitively impaired/no dementia (CIND), and dementia life expectancies by gender for older White, Black, U.S.-born and foreign-born Hispanic adults with less than high school, high school, and some college or more.
Results: White respondents lived a greater percentage of their remaining lives cognitive healthy than their minority Black or Hispanic counterparts, regardless …
Investigating A Multimodal Approach To Clinical Diagnosis Of Mild Cognitive Impairment And Alzheimer’S Disease, Sean M. Flannery
Investigating A Multimodal Approach To Clinical Diagnosis Of Mild Cognitive Impairment And Alzheimer’S Disease, Sean M. Flannery
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
An estimated 5.8 million Americans suffer from dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD), with that number projected to grow to 13.8 million by mid-century (Alzheimer’s Association, 2019). Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) describes the stage between normal cognitive decline that comes with aging and a dementia diagnosis (Peterson, 1999). Due to a lack of a cure or particularly effective treatment, a major goal of treatment is to focus on improving quality of life (Budson & Solomon, 2016). An early and accurate diagnosis can address this goal in a variety of ways. Despite the high prevalence and immense amount of research in …

Dementia Prevention, Intervention, And Care: 2020 Report Of The Lancet Commission, G Livingston, J Huntley, A Sommerlad, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
The number of older people, including those living with dementia, is rising, as younger age mortality declines. However, the age-specific incidence of dementia has fallen in many countries, probably because of improvements in education, nutrition, health care, and lifestyle changes. Overall, a growing body of evidence supports the nine potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia modelled by the 2017 Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention, and care: less education, hypertension, hearing impairment, smoking, obesity, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, and low social contact. We now add three more risk factors for dementia with newer, convincing evidence. These factors are excessive alcohol …

Qualitative Evaluation Of A Future Care Planning Program, Jeong Eun Lee, Katherine Rafferty, Louise Peitz, Emily Bormann
Journal of Extension
We describe efforts to evaluate the impact of the Future Care Planning (FCP) program. To gain deeper understanding of the context and needs of older adults who attended FCP sessions, we conducted follow-up telephone interviews and a qualitative content analysis of the structured interview calls. We identified areas for which Extension can provide continued support, positive programming impacts, and recommendations for future programming. We discuss how our findings will be used for future efforts addressing the topic for older adults and the implications of our findings and method for others in Extension.
From Territorial To Transformational: A New Framework For Master Volunteer Engagement, Lisa T. Washburn, Andrew B. Crocker, Joanne Leatherman
From Territorial To Transformational: A New Framework For Master Volunteer Engagement, Lisa T. Washburn, Andrew B. Crocker, Joanne Leatherman
Journal of Extension
Meaningful volunteer engagement depends on the Extension professional's volunteer management philosophy, training, and organizational support for using volunteers. Volunteer development and leadership development are typically absent from management-focused volunteer models used in Extension. Professional development of the Extension professional, beyond discrete management tasks, is lacking but is needed for authentic volunteer engagement through master volunteer programs. A volunteer engagement framework is described to guide a shift from volunteer management to engagement, including use of principles of the community-based participatory approach. The volunteer engagement framework can help professionals identify and self-assess the skill set needed for authentic and sustained volunteer involvement …

Intussusception In An Infant As A Manifestation Of Covid-19, Zorays Moazzam, Areej Saleem, Alina Ashraf, Fyezah Jehan, Muhammad Arshad
Medical College Documents
Gastrointestinal manifestations of COVID-19 are rare and have primarily been limited to diarrhea or vomiting. Intussusception is the most common cause of bowel obstruction in infants, with up to 30% of pediatric intussusception cases having a preceding viral illness. We present the rare case of intussusception in a SARS-CoV-2 positive infant. This is the first documented case of survival in a SARS-CoV-2 positive patient presenting with intussusception as the primary manifestation. As our knowledge of this disease evolves, surgeons need to remain suspicious for possible gastrointestinal manifestations of COVID-19.

Rights And Representation: Media Narratives About Disabled People And Their Service Animals In Canadian Print News, Lana Kerzner, Chelsea Temple Jones, Beth Haller, Arthur Blaser
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
Canadian news coverage is reflecting and shaping an evolution of thought about how we must publicly account for animals’ roles in the disability rights movement. Through a textual analysis of 26 news media articles published between 2012 and 2017, this research demonstrates that the media play a key role in reporting on discrimination, yet media narratives about service animals and their owners too often fail to capture the complexity of policies and laws that govern their lives. In Canada, there is widespread public confusion about the rights of disabled people and their service animals. This incertitude is relevant to both …

Intention To Use Social Networking Sites Among Malaysian Chinese Older Adults, Chia Sin Ooi, Poh Chua Siah, Sew Kim Low
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Research has shown that social networking sites (SNS), such as Facebook and WhatsApp, make it more convenient for older adults to bond with friends and family. However, despite such benefits, studies also found few older adults use SNS, and even fewer older adults use SNS in less developed nations. Therefore, it is important to identify factors that can influence intention to use SNS in older adults, especially among the Malaysian Chinese population, as they will face an aging society earlier than other ethnic groups in Malaysia. This study used the Technology Acceptance Model and Reasoned Action Approach to examine whether …

Critical Wisdom In The Training Of Clinical Psychologists, Ross B. Renfroe
Critical Wisdom In The Training Of Clinical Psychologists, Ross B. Renfroe
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The construct of wisdom has been studied over the past 30 years with the majority of the research focused on wisdom as “expert knowledge in the fundamental pragmatics of life” (Baltes & Staudinger, 2000). In the Christian tradition, wisdom can be divided into two categories: conventional and critical. Conventional wisdom bears striking similarities to the understanding of wisdom used in psychological research. In contrast, critical wisdom addresses the difficult paradoxes of life, but has not been the focus of much empirical study. Critical wisdom could be a helpful construct for clinical psychologists who hope to practice psychology from an integrative …

Fatigue Leads To Altered Spinal Kinematics During High Performance Ergometer Rowing, Caryn A. Urbanczyk, Emma Miller, Alison H. Mcgregor, Anthony Mj Bull
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Low back injuries in rowing are attributed to intense, repetitive, loading through the spine. Good technique and postural control are essential to maximize performance and minimize injury risk. This motion capture study recorded 3D spinal kinematics of 14 athletes during rowing at varying speeds on an instrumented ergometer and correlated motion with power metrics and athlete demographics. Sagittal plane rotation decreases in the lumbar spine and increases in the thoracic spine as speed increases. Transverse and frontal planes have little influence on force output. Declining postural control can be seen within each trial and worsened with higher rate. Assessments of …

Mechanisms Underlying Food Functionality Via Molecular Chaperones: Chemical Training Hypothesis, A. Murakami, K. Ohnishi
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Most physiologically functional food factors are derived from plants. Although those chemicals exhibit versatile bioactivities, their mechanisms of action are not fully understood. It is important to indicate that phytochemicals, but not plant nutrients, xenobiotics in humans and thus induce expressions of self-defense molecules, including anti-oxidative and xenobiotic function as metabolizing enzymes via the Keap1/Nrf2 system. In addition, recent reports have shown that several phytochemicals are capable of up-regulating the activities of molecular chaperones such as heat shock proteins (HSPs) and proteasomes. For example, sulforaphane, a sulfur-containing phytochemical present in cruciferous plants, was recently reported to induce HSP27 expression and …
