Growing Older Across Time And Space: The Impact Of Various Forms Of Capital On Social Support Networks Among Older Vietnamese Migrants, Hien Thi Nguyen, Lukasz Krzyzowski, Loretta Baldassar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Much has been written about the important role of social support networks (SSNs) for the well-being of older adults, encompassing their social, emotional and practical needs. Less is known about what happens to the SSNs of older people when they migrate, and even fewer studies have examined the impact of different forms of capital on these networks. Drawing on ethnographic interviews and participant observation with 22 older Vietnamese migrants in Australia (2020–21), this paper explores the influence of different forms of social, cultural, economic and symbolic capital on their SSNs. Data analysis comprised egocentric social network analysis of the connections …

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
This quality improvement project examined the effect of music therapy and activity-focused interventions on fall rates in a memory care unit at a long-term care facility. The project was developed after staff identified falls as a major safety concern, with the memory care unit accounting for a disproportionate number of facility-wide falls. Through audits and observations, the team found that boredom, wandering, restlessness, and lack of meaningful engagement were common contributing factors to falls among residents with dementia. To address this issue, the team implemented low-cost, person-centered interventions including playing familiar music through Alexa, encouraging participation in simple arts and …

Staging The Commons Through The “Padha Nonton” Song; Youtube, Community Engagement, And Gandrung Cultural Practice, Intan Mustika Sari
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This study examines how the Gandrung accompaniment song “Padha nonton” participates in processes of digital cultural sharing when circulated on YouTube. It employs a qualitative interpretive method within a netno‑pragmatic framework to analyse audience engagement as a culturally informed social practice. The findings show that the song’s linguistic features convey cultural scripts of invitation, togetherness, and communal spectatorship, reflecting the role of the Gandrung tradition in shaping shared social relationships and cultural values. Furthermore, the study identifies three interrelated processes: re-medialization, re-experiencing, and re-conception through which the performance extends beyond its original ritual context and becomes a shared …

Clinical ladder programs have been available for decades to promote bedside nursing recognition and retention. They have been proven to increase the perception of being valued by an organization, which in turn increases job satisfaction and performance. There is limited research to support the use of these same types of programs for ancillary clinical staff. These staff are essential members of the care team and deserve recognition for the work that they do. The objective was to successfully develop, implement and maintain a clinical ladder program that is specifically tailored to recognize and reward the clinical excellence of this staff. …

Exercise As A Non-Pharmacological Intervention For The Prevention And Delay Of Alzheimer’S Disease And Dementia, Eden Culver
Honors Theses
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias are rapidly increasing public health concerns due to aging populations and rising life expectancy. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration associated with amyloid-β plaques, tau neurofibrillary tangles, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and neuronal loss, leading to impairments in memory, cognition, and daily functioning. Because there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, identifying effective non-pharmacological prevention strategies is essential. This paper examines the role of physical exercise as a preventive and protective intervention for delaying the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Current research demonstrates that exercise supports brain health through several …

Piloting A Scalable Workflow To Identify Drivers Of Mammalian Aging Using C. Elegans, Ariella Lucia Coler-Reilly Colasanti
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The aging population in developed countries has prompted experts to warn of the impending “silver tsunami” of older adults poised to overload already strained healthcare systems. Advanced age is the primary risk factor for most chronic diseases, and the vast majority of the elderly population is diagnosed with at least one such condition, if not several. The field of geroscience has emerged to study the processes responsible for age-related decline and devise methods to reduce this burden. A major branch of geroscience is the genetics of aging, including examining gene expression changes over time as well as exploring how genetic …

Inside The Study: A Meta-Exploration Of Undergraduate Ra Experiences In Social Work, April Janel Jackson-Andal
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Social work is not generally seen as a research-based field, yet social workers rely on evidence-based practices to address clients’ needs (Council on Social Work Education [CSWE], 2022; National Association of Social Workers [NASW], 2021). Research has shown that social work students often avoid research due to disinterest or anxiety (Gredig et al., 2022). Professors typically favor master’s-level students, providing few hands-on research opportunities for undergraduates (Inoue et al., 2017; Sidell, 2007). This creates a gap in understanding undergraduate experiences.
This qualitative study explores the experiences of 5 undergraduate research assistants in the social work department at The University of …
