Screening For Delirium In The Emergency Department, Melissa Minks

Dissertations

Abstract

Delirium is a problem for many older adults who are acutely ill. Delirium often comes on suddenly, can be severe, and is often difficult to diagnose, especially in the presence of dementia. Missed delirium has a mortality rate of 30.8% and costs millions. What is the purpose of this study?

Methods The 4A’s Test screening instrument was implemented and evaluated in the Emergency Department of a rural Midwestern hospital from May 1, 2019 through August 31, 2019.

Results There were 122 participants in the study with 61 in each cohort. In 2018, three (5%) were diagnosed with delirium without …

A Study Of Covid-19 Mortality Under Varying Patient Frailty, Alison N. Sifuentes Jul 2020

A Study Of Covid-19 Mortality Under Varying Patient Frailty, Alison N. Sifuentes

Theses and Dissertations

Modeled the spread and mortality of COVID-19 throughout the city of Chicago. By incorporating group frailty into a classic SEIR infectious disease model, we were able to differentiate the population of Chicago by their response to COVID-19. Three age groups with different COVID-19-induced death rates were examined, and the model sought to showcase the multiplicative deviation of each age group death rate from the average disease-induced death rate. This adjustment for different death rates among age groups accounted for heterogeneity within the population, and sought to introduce a more accurate manner for modeling the spread of infectious diseases.

Position/Weight-Activated Knee Locking Mechanism, Tyagi Ramakrishnan, Kyle B. Reed

USF Patents

A passive knee locking mechanism using the position of the shank and the weight of the user to lock. The mechanism has translational motion, which allows the shank to move linearly along the sagittal/vertical plane, which locks and unlocks the knee, and rotational motion for the shank to swing when unlocked. The knee block, which is disposed at the top of the shank, has a spur gear that locks with a matching gear rack on the top plate of the knee housing. The side plates for the knee housing have a linear path that makes for the translational motion. During …

Effects Of Sex, Race, And Education On The Timing Of Coming Out Among Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Adults In The U.S., Trenton M. Haltom, Shawn M. Ratcliff Jul 2020

Effects Of Sex, Race, And Education On The Timing Of Coming Out Among Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Adults In The U.S., Trenton M. Haltom, Shawn M. Ratcliff

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Sexual identity formation or “coming out” as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) involves a complex process including both private realization and public disclosure. Private realization refers to the process through which an individual becomes aware of their LGB identity, whereas public disclosure reflects when an individual discloses their identity to another person. Sex, race, and class affect the timing of these processes across the life course. While extant research has identified the bivariate nature of these processes, we took a multivariate approach to understand the timing of these sexual identity milestones from a life-course perspective. Using data from the Pew …

Improving Palliative And Hospice Knowledge Among Nurses In A Long-Term Care Facility., Kelly Rae Smith

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: Early referral and implementation of palliative best-practices in patients with chronic diseases and at the end-of-life (EOL) significantly decreases patient symptom burden, increases quality-of-life, contributes to patient and family satisfaction with care, and reduces healthcare costs. Nurses in long-term care (LTC) are poised to help identify patients appropriate for referral, to provide quality palliative and EOL care, but lack adequate knowledge. Objectives: To determine if a short one-on-one or two-on-one palliative and hospice educational offering can improve (a) knowledge of best-practice palliative and hospice care symptom management techniques (b) the ability of nurses to identify patients appropriate for hospice …

Improving Delirium Management And Compliance On A Trauma/Surgical Universal Unit., Ardis Roederer Jul 2020

Improving Delirium Management And Compliance On A Trauma/Surgical Universal Unit., Ardis Roederer

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: Delirium is an acute, reversible syndrome that may cause cognitive impairment, disorientation, perceptual disturbances, attention discrepancies, and fluctuating psychomotor activities. Health professionals may not recognize, treat, or prevent delirium. More than seven million hospitalized adults, with an estimated cost of $164 billion annually, suffer from delirium each year. Consequently, delirium commonly affects 15 to 37% of the older adult population, yet less than 5% of delirium cases are documented in the electronic medical records of older adult patients. Early detection, intervention, and compliance with best practices are critical for the reduction of hospitalized delirium incidence. Aim: This project aimed …

Does Devotion To God Push You Away From Science?: Using Religiosity To Assessing The Impact Of The Religion/Science Conflict Perspective On The Choice Of Academic Major Among Undergraduate Students At A Religious Institution, Jonathan Shephard, Tron Wilder, Aaron Corbit Jul 2020

Does Devotion To God Push You Away From Science?: Using Religiosity To Assessing The Impact Of The Religion/Science Conflict Perspective On The Choice Of Academic Major Among Undergraduate Students At A Religious Institution, Jonathan Shephard, Tron Wilder, Aaron Corbit

Capstone Research Projects

Religion and science are often perceived to be in conflict. Science is thought to deal with facts and evidence while religion is thought to deal only with faith. This conflict perspective is pervasive in modern society and can manifest itself in many ways. One way it may exert its influence is in the academic decisions made by college students. Students who are less religious may be more likely to choose science majors while those who are more religious may avoid science majors. While research does support this hypothesis in a broad sense, there may be special cases where the impact …

ROSA Research Briefs

COVID-19 has affected all Singaporeans, regardless of age and socioeconomic status (SES). Many measures have been implemented by the government to control the spread of this disease, including restrictions on social gatherings, restrictions on overseas travel, and making it compulsory to wear a mask. Measures have also included a partial lockdown – known as the ‘circuit breaker’ – which began in April 2020. This forced Singaporeans to quickly adapt to a new normal with some doing better than others. This research brief provides an overview of how COVID-19 and its related measures have affected seniors in Singapore using data from …

In most organisms, dietary restriction (DR) increases lifespan. However, several studies have found that genotypes within the same species vary widely in how they respond to DR. To explore the mechanisms underlying this variation, we exposed 178 inbred Drosophila melanogaster lines to a DR or ad libitum (AL) diet, and measured a panel of 105 metabolites under both diets. Twenty four out of 105 metabolites were associated with the magnitude of the lifespan response. These included proteinogenic amino acids and metabolites involved in α-ketoglutarate (α-KG)/glutamine metabolism. We confirm the role of α-KG/glutamine synthesis pathways in the DR response through genetic …

A Needs Assessment & Implementation Strategy Of The Emergency Nurse Practitioner Post-Graduate Certificate., Nancy Wilding Jul 2020

A Needs Assessment & Implementation Strategy Of The Emergency Nurse Practitioner Post-Graduate Certificate., Nancy Wilding

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Nurse Practitioners have been utilized to meet the growing needs of emergency departments during the shortage of Emergency Medicine-trained physicians. Stakeholders have recognized the benefits that Nurse Practitioners (NP) bring to Emergency Departments (ED) in providing quality, evidence-based, cost-effective quality care. However, there is a confusion of the emergency nurse practitioner (ENP) role and scope of practice by facilities, physicians, state boards of nursing, credentialing bodies, and patients that limit the ENP from practicing at their full scope of practice. To establish the role and expand the NPs' knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the ED setting, a …

A Logistic Regression Analysis Of Life Satisfaction Amongst African Immigrants In Hamilton, Canada, Boadi Agyekum

Societies Without Borders

Many minority immigrants currently face severe human rights violation through discrimination and racism, influencing how they rate their life satisfaction in their host destinations. This paper examines the factors that affect African immigrants’ life satisfaction in a mid-sized Canadian city. Using a combination of descriptive and multivariate methods applied on a sample survey (n=236) conducted in Hamilton, Ontario, this article investigates socio-demographic and health-related factors that predict life satisfaction amongst African immigrants, specifically, Ghanaians and Somalis. Findings suggest that Ghanaian immigrants reported greater life satisfaction than their Somali counterparts. People with residency in Canada over 10 years are more likely …

Supporting Adequate Sleep In Patients Hospitalized With Psychiatric Illness Through A Nurse-Driven Protocol, Mary Perez

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Sleep is growing in recognition for its part in overall health. Sleep is essential to optimal functioning in all people. Its link to psychiatric illness makes it especially important to those in recovery. As we learn more about sleep and its effects, it is important for nurses and nurse leaders to become more acquainted with how sleep affects health and what can be done to initiate good sleep. Since sleep is complex and supporting sleep must be individualized to each person, having a good understanding of both subjects is necessary. Sleep hygiene is a set of environmental and behavioral interventions …

Defective Early Innate Immune Response To Ectromelia Virus In The Draining Lymph Nodes Of Aged Mice Due To Impaired Dendritic Cell Accumulation., Colby Stotesbury, Eric B Wong, Lingjuan Tang, Brian Montoya, Cory J Knudson, Carolina R Melo-Silva, Luis J Sigal

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

It is known that aging decreases natural resistance to viral diseases due to dysfunctional innate and adaptive immune responses, but the nature of these dysfunctions, particularly in regard to innate immunity, is not well understood. We have previously shown that C57BL/6J (B6) mice lose their natural resistance to footpad infection with ectromelia virus (ECTV) due to impaired maturation and recruitment of natural killer (NK) cells to the draining popliteal lymph node (dLN). More recently, we have also shown that in young B6 mice infected with ECTV, the recruitment of NK cells is dependent on a complex cascade whereby migratory dendritic …

Measuring The Impact Of Covid-19 On Older Adults In Massachusetts, Ceara Somerville, Jan Mutchler, Caitlin Coyle

Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Publications

The spread of COVID-19 across the United States has affected every facet of life since early 2020. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are currently over 4 million cases across the nation and over 146,000 deaths from the virus. Massachusetts has been one of the states hit hardest, with over 100,000 confirmed cases and more than 8,000 deaths to date. The Commonwealth currently trails only New York and New Jersey in number of deaths. While cases surge around the country, Massachusetts has seen some leveling out of positive cases since the beginning of July. Though …
