Saving The Memories In The Framework Of Social Heritage Conservation In Egyptian Villages, Dalia Shebl Said

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Social memories is a part of our heritage. One of the complex challenges which facing our intangible heritage is how to deal to various forms of social meaning, special memories that form a distinguished culture in our community. Social heritage is heavily related to three factors; time, place and human. The research takes a case study Al-Shakluba village that focuses on the non-materialistic aspects of social and culture heritage that increases recognition with intangible values and plays an important role that how people interact with social and cultural environments and the importance of these values that impact on the ways …

Freed Faces, Our Past Americans: Collaborations To Create, Digitize And Describe The “Former Slaves In Freedom” Collection, Gayle Porter

Collaborative Librarianship

The Chicago State University (CSU) Archives collaborated with the International Society of Sons and Daughters of Slave Ancestry (ISDSA), a Chicago-based lineage society, to digitize, describe, and make accessible online a collection of 359 private historic photographs of formerly enslaved African Americans, and 90+ brief family histories, submitted by descendants. This case study describes the benefits, processes, and challenges of this unique, unfinished collaborative project. The study also describes: 1. Creative, flexible approaches to collaborative digital projects by an academic institution and a community organization; 2. Balancing cataloging/metadata standards while respecting a curator’s goals for the collection.

“The Torture Of Colonization And The Holocaust: Multidirectional Memory In The Nature Of Blood”, Sarah Webb Jun 2020

“The Torture Of Colonization And The Holocaust: Multidirectional Memory In The Nature Of Blood”, Sarah Webb

International ResearchScape Journal

In this paper, I read Caryl Phillips’s 1997 post-colonial The Nature of Blood as a novel that exemplifies Michael Rothberg’s theory of “multidirectional memory.” Rothberg’s theory, which argues against the dominant competitive model of memory in the United States, asserts that memory is a “productive, intercultural dynamic” (Rothberg 3). In other words, memories of different groups of people, specifically African-Americans and Holocaust survivors in his essay, are intertwined and inform each other in a modern setting. Phillips’s novel depicts a relationship between the Holocaust and colonization through the use of multiple narratives interwoven throughout the novel. Those narratives begin with …

The characteristics of the robotic navigation map, the source and classification of the data, and the difference and relationship between SLAM are analyzed in detail. The robotic spatial data sets are discretized with the ultra-high resolution volumetric grid units as the data organization units. …

Spatio-Temporal Data Organization Model Of Unified Ground And Aerial Battlefield And Its Application, Li Feng, Wan Gang, Bingchuan Jiang, Xuefeng Cao Jun 2020

Spatio-Temporal Data Organization Model Of Unified Ground And Aerial Battlefield And Its Application, Li Feng, Wan Gang, Bingchuan Jiang, Xuefeng Cao

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the requirement of battlefield environment data in joint operations, a spatio-temporal data organization model of unified ground and aerial battlefield based on grid division is proposed in this paper. The sphere grid division is adopted to divide the space to extend to the time dimension. Also, the spatio-temporal grid coding is designed. The field and object are combined to build the BSTD organization model, where the sphere layer and sphere volume grid unit are used separately as the reference space to quantitatively describe the field, and the spatio-temporal grid coding is adopted to describe the …

'Where Many Paths And Errands Meet': Travel Writing In The Lord Of The Rings, Will Glover Jun 2020

'Where Many Paths And Errands Meet': Travel Writing In The Lord Of The Rings, Will Glover

Journal of Tolkien Research

In this paper I examine The Lord of the Rings through the lens of genre criticism. I take issue with the commonplace characterisation of the work as an ‘epic’ or a ‘romance’, a tendency that has restricted interpretations of the work and tied criticism of it too exclusively to that of medieval literature. I argue that the work should be viewed as a modern novel: an open-ended and capacious text comprised of numerous generic traditions, including the previously overlooked genre of travel literature. After establishing a working definition of travel writing, I analyse The Lord of the Rings's paratextual …

One hundred seventy students responded to the Learning Style Inventory (LSI) developed by Kolb (1999a). Descriptive analysis was used to answer the …

Radical Togetherness: African-American Literature And Abolition Pedagogy At Parchman And Beyond, Patrick Elliot Alexander Jun 2020

Radical Togetherness: African-American Literature And Abolition Pedagogy At Parchman And Beyond, Patrick Elliot Alexander

Prison-to-College Pipeline Program Publications (Open Access)

This article makes the case that the student-centered learning paradigm that I have aimed to establish at Parchman/Mississippi State Penitentiary as a member of a college-in-prison program represents a prison abolition pedagogy that builds on Martin Luther King and Angela Y. Davis’s coalitional models of abolition work. Drawing from Davis’s abolition-framed conception of teaching in jails and prisons as expressed in her autobiography and her critical prison studies text Are Prisons Obsolete?, I argue that the learning environments that I create collaboratively with students at Parchman similarly respond to incarcerated students’ institution-specific concerns and African-American literary interests in ways that …

Three Essays On The Economic Impact Of The Affordable Care Act, Kevin Wood Jun 2020

Three Essays On The Economic Impact Of The Affordable Care Act, Kevin Wood

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the economic impacts of the Affordable Care Act. The first chapter measures the effect of the ACA's government transfers on labor force participation of the near elderly. Findings show there are disincentives to labor supply associated with both the Medicaid Expansions and Premium Subsidies. This study also finds evidence that subsidized plans led to crowding out of private consumption of employer sponsored insurance. The second chapter examines the cross program interaction of the ACA and the federal disability insurance programs. These disability insurance programs couple income replacement with public health insurance, whereas the ACA offers an alternative …

Worlds And Words: Interrogating Type And Map As Systems Of Power And Embodied Meaning-Making, Jane Turner, Manuela Taboada Jun 2020

Worlds And Words: Interrogating Type And Map As Systems Of Power And Embodied Meaning-Making, Jane Turner, Manuela Taboada

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

This paper responds to the call to move away from the centre and to design from many centres. We need to address cultural colonisation and systemisation; to counter misdirection and deceit in order to reveal – not merely the ‘centre’ but the ‘systems of the underside’: structures and systems that arise in the past and which continue to “cloud our eyes” in graphic design communication. Inspired by the works of Walter Mignolo, Arturo Escobar and Boaventura de Souza Santos, which expose the ‘systems of the underside’ and the notion of ‘ecologies of knowledge’ in order to disentangle (and free) or …

Defining The Value Of Educational Equilibrium For Immigrant And At-Risk Youths Through Art Education In The 2020s And Beyond, Clovis Benjamin Nelson Jun 2020

Defining The Value Of Educational Equilibrium For Immigrant And At-Risk Youths Through Art Education In The 2020s And Beyond, Clovis Benjamin Nelson

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

The purpose of this study is to explore the inefficiencies of a one-size-fits-all curricular structure that has no bearing on the anthropological behavior of unique learners. Little is known about cultural relevance in learning through artistic means such as the visual arts, especially for unique project-based learners. This paper is a methodological consideration of a specific visual arts teaching approach for global application in the effort of shaping a “world of many centers.” Attention is given to the natural principles of ecological psychology, identifying the construct of the anthropological respectability of indigenous voices globally, and clarifying related scientific perception-action. The …

Re-Defining Domestic Craft-Making: Cultivation Of New Craft Practices And Identity Through The Social Media, Pelin Efilti, Gizem Çelebi

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

Making and producing traditions have been in a state of change with the emergence of digital media that creates knowledge sharing platforms affecting the conventional pathways. With a focus on embroidery activity, this paper seeks the dynamics of domestic craft-making under the influence of digitalization culture and aims to reveal the change of traditional practices and approaches fostered through social media platforms. To understand the potential of social media platforms, an empirical study was conducted with forty-two Turkish craftspeople engaging in embroidery with particular open-ended and sample-based questions. The findings show that the use of social media triggers the creativity …

Prototyping A Micro-Pluriverse: Performed Cosmologies To Decolonize Augmented Reality, Selwa Sweidan, Jessica Escobedo Sibrian

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

How do we apply theories of decolonization to an emerging technology such as augmented reality (AR)? We explain how our co-creative pilot laboratory contributes to efforts in decolonizing augmented reality through embodied prototyping, and designing pluriversality in AR to “augment” de-centered narratives. Our initial methods included facilitating reading discussions and affinity mapping (to transpose theories into action). “Thinking-feeling” (Escobar, 2015) and “power-geometries” (Massey, 1991) became a means to engage with our own mental models and constructs, as they relate to colonization. This led us to build a series of prompts organized into a “Cosmology Toolkit” (Escobedo, Kris & Sweidan, 2020). …

Women have created alternative means of registering their own personal, as well as social, collective memories and subjectivities in handcrafted, embroidered and other artisanal technique female narratives. The 'embroidery community' of elderly women in the Lagoinha Complex, a socially troubled urban area in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, has shown an authentic resilient attitude against historical oppressions, such as discrimination related to gender, ethnicity, education, social class, and ageism. This is a follow-up project from "Lagoinha_Heritage Design Development" developed in 2018 and 2019, focused on raising awareness and triggering discussions about the bonds established between design and memory. It has brought to …

How “Dependent” Are We? A Spatiotemporal Analysis Of The Young And The Older Adult Populations In The Us, Debasree Das Gupta, David W. S. Wong Jun 2020

How “Dependent” Are We? A Spatiotemporal Analysis Of The Young And The Older Adult Populations In The Us, Debasree Das Gupta, David W. S. Wong

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

The shifting of a country’s age structure has far-reaching socioeconomic and policy implications. In the US, the changing age structure at the sub-national level has received little research attention. To address this gap, we examine age dependencies across states in the US between 1990 and 2010 using decennial census data. We find that dependency changes have been gradual with a distinct graying of states during this period. Within this overarching trend, the sources of states’ dependencies follow complicated trajectories without clear spatiotemporal patterns. Nevertheless, changes in states’ old-age dependency contributions to respective total dependencies are geographically clustered and the inverse …

A Study Of Public Parks, Equity, And The Creation Of Single Member Council Districts In Dallas, Texas, Annabeth Webb

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

This research explores the civic governance and political structure of the city council election systems in Dallas, Texas after the Voting Rights Act in order to discover the change in minority representation and its impact on the equity and distribution of public parks within the city of Dallas. This thesis explores this particular political mechanism for equity creation in the City of Dallas during two time periods: at the drastic change to 14 single-member districts in 1991, and the changes made beyond the 1994 Dallas Plan. Within the Dallas planning history, there is little literature on equity and history of …

The Bluegrass Region is an area in north-central Kentucky with unique natural and cultural significance, which possesses some of the most fertile soils in the world. Over recent decades, land use and land cover changes have threatened the protection of the unique natural, scenic, and historic resources in this region. In this study, we applied a fragmentation model and a set of landscape metrics together with the satellite-derived USDA Cropland Data Layer to examine the shrinkage and fragmentation of grassland in the Bluegrass Region, Kentucky during 2008–2018. Our results showed that recent land use change across the Bluegrass Region is …

Wrack & Ruin: A Tale Of Tortured Trees, John T. Van Stan Ii, Albertus Tyasseta, Siloy, Graphic Artist

Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Bookshelf

Here, we visit a community of trees living along the Georgia coast, just above the high tide line, on a little lump of sand called a "hammock." This hammock plant community is battered by a hurricane. The plants that survive soon realize that they have fallen prey to a hydrological torture wrack - one composed of the salty corpses of their neighboring marsh plants (Spartina alterniflora). This sci comic is based on the publication, "Wrack and ruin: Legacy hydrologic effects of hurricane-deposited wrack..." (https://doi.org/10.1088/2515-7620/ab9527).

Spatial Production And Nomadic Subjectivities In A Buddhist Learning Space, Chau Bao Le Jun 2020

Spatial Production And Nomadic Subjectivities In A Buddhist Learning Space, Chau Bao Le

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Space and place are an integral part in the geographies of education, therefore, knowledge about culturally complex and ethnically diverse transnational communities could inform curricular innovations that meet the needs of individual students. This year-long ethnographic study challenged the prevailing realities that U.S. schools continue to devalue the experiences and cultural backgrounds of immigrant youth, which caused students from ethnic, cultural, racial, linguistic, and religious minority groups to feel structurally excluded and marginalized. Through examining the spatial production and nomadic subjectivities enacted over time in a transnational, diasporic space of a Buddhist temple in a U.S. southern state, the study …

KORUS-AQ was an international cooperative air quality field study in South Korea that measured local and remote sources of air pollution affecting the Korean Peninsula during May–June 2016. Some of the largest aerosol mass concentrations were measured during a Chinese haze transport event (24 May). Air quality forecasts using the WRF-Chem model with aerosol optical depth (AOD) data assimilation captured AOD during this pollution episode but overpredicted surface particulate matter concentrations in South Korea, especially PM2.5, often by a factor of 2 or larger. Analysis revealed multiple sources of model deficiency related to the calculation of optical properties from aerosol …
