Identifying Major Sources Of Leptospira Interrogans In San Juan Bay And Río Grande De Loíza Estuaries Of Puerto Rico, Logan Mccullers, Dave Bachoon
Biology Theses
This study evaluated the presence of pathogenic Leptospira interrogans, potential carriers, and environmental factors influencing their occurrence in the San Juan Bay Estuary (SJBE) and Río Grande de Loíza (RGDL) watersheds of Puerto Rico from 2024–2025. Detection of this pathogen from water samples was performed using the lipL32 PCR assay. The likely hosts of L. interrogans were determined using fecal source tracking (FST) assays for human (HF-183), canine (BacCan-UCD), equine (HoF597), and rat mitochondrial DNA NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene (RatMt) markers. In 2024, 91 samples were collected (March: 50; June: 41), and in 2025, 124 samples were collected …

Critical Minerals In A Critical Time, Parker J. Peterson, Sophia Budge, Brooks Miner
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
This study evaluates U.S. positioning in rare earth mineral (REM) supply chains by analyzing global mine concentrations and trade alignments. While the U.S. ranks second in production, its critical vulnerability lies in processing, where China controls 60–80% of global capacity. Strategic investment and allied partnerships are essential for long-term supply chain resilience.
Where's Our Water? Invasive Saltcedar's Thirsty Trek Across The Shoreline Of Lake Mead, Mia R. Morgan, Joseph Penrod, Ruth Kerry
Where's Our Water? Invasive Saltcedar's Thirsty Trek Across The Shoreline Of Lake Mead, Mia R. Morgan, Joseph Penrod, Ruth Kerry
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
The prolonged megadrought in Southern Nevada has exposed thousands of acres of former lakebed at Lake Mead, creating an expanding frontier for the invasive shrub Tamarix ramosissima, commonly known as saltcedar. This hardy, non-native species rapidly colonizes the receding shoreline, siphoning up to 200 gallons of water per plant daily and outcompeting native vegetation. Utilizing high-resolution satellite imagery from 2020 and 2025, this research found that saltcedar coverage within a 5 km radius of the lake increased by approximately 76.7%.
Analysis of the spatial data indicates that while the total area of infestation has exploded, the average distance of …

Finding Belonging In A Religious Dominant Society: Religion Among African Migrants In Türkiye, Garrett L. Wride, Stacey A. Shaw
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
As global migration increases each year, so does the need to understand the crossroads between inclusion, wellbeing, and religion. The experience of African migrants living in Türkiye presents itself as a unique case to study migrant wellbeing. Using quantitative and qualitative analysis, this study shows that African migrants in Türkiye belonging to the religious minority have lower scores of wellbeing and social support. Findings point to the need for policy makers and mental health practitioners to ensure migrants can access their religious communities.
Organizing To Engage: A Framework For Conflict Strategy, Paul Mason Carpenter
Organizing To Engage: A Framework For Conflict Strategy, Paul Mason Carpenter
Dissertations
Conflict strategy can be exceedingly complex. While many of the basics are simple, even the simple can be highly complicated to execute. The Schlieffen Plan in World War I appeared straight forward, but execution was a great deal more complex. It failed and the result was years of trench warfare. In addition, leaders entering conflict may not fully appreciate the full context, its effect, and the need for a long term result--a better state of peace.
Strategy and tactics may be challenging to transform as an engagement evolves. In addition, strategists must often commit to courses of action within very …

Workforce Dynamics In Michigan's Upper Peninsula: Trends, Shocks, And Projections Through 2030, Iryna V. Lendel
Presentations
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is navigating a complex economic transition shaped by demographic change, workforce aging, and sectoral concentration. While the region has experienced long-term population decline, its labor force has remained stable due to rising participation among older workers. At the same time, the U.P.’s economy remains highly concentrated in extraction, construction, and production industries. These industries offer strong wages but are sensitive to economic cycles.
This presentation highlights key findings on workforce structure, industry specialization, and the region’s capacity to respond to potential shocks, including major employer closures. Evidence shows substantial skill overlap across industries, creating opportunities for worker …

Essays On Impact Investing And Sovereign Wealth Funds, Joy Namhee Wilkinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This dissertation examines how impact investment capital is allocated and structured, focusing on geographic targeting, investor heterogeneity, and the participation of sovereign wealth funds (SWFs). The first essay investigates the geographic determinants of impact investments, assessing whether they flow to communities with lower economic connectedness—a proxy for economic mobility. It further explores how the location and type of co-investors influence investment characteristics, investor monitoring, and exit outcomes, shedding light on how traditional and impact investors interact and shape investment outcomes. The second essay examines the role of SWFs in impact investing. It analyzes the channels through which SWFs deploy impact …

Amphibole Reaction Rims Record Shear During Magma Ascent, Paul A. Wallace, Janine Birnbaum, Sarah H. De Angelis, Elisabetta Mariani, Jessica Larsen, Jackie E. Kendrick, Thomas E. Christopher, Paul D. Cole, Anthony Lamur, Yan Lavallée
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Mineral reaction textures are fundamental archives of geological change. Amphibole reaction rims are among the most widely used to reconstruct pre-eruptive magmatic conditions, traditionally interpreted through changes in pressure, temperature and melt composition. However, these interpretations have largely overlooked the role of deformation, ubiquitous during magma ascent. Here we show that amphibole breakdown is not only thermodynamically sensitive, but also mechanically sensitive. Using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analyses of experimental and natural samples, combined with numerical simulations of crystal rotation under magma flow, we demonstrate that pyroxene nucleates topotactically on amphibole, forming rims, but can later reorient in response to …

Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations
As historic levels of funding to resolve and prevent homelessness draws down in Multnomah County, entities providing homeless services want to know the most effective ways of supporting people experiencing homelessness. The “Pathways” study aims to help answer that question. Through surveys and interviews, we sought to understand how people navigate their lives while homeless, and in particular how they interacted with homeless services. Overall, the findings reinforce what previous studies have found: people want housing, need housing to be affordable and within their means, and value helpful effective services. This report presents findings from surveys with 541 people with …

The formation of character and social insight is very important for students to have since elementary school, which makes social studies learning very important to be taught. However, there is a big challenge in social studies learning in elementary schools, namely an interesting learning method in accordance with the development of elementary school students who are still at the concrete operational stage. One solution to overcome this challenge is to apply a meaningful learning approach. This approach makes it easy for students to understand new concepts because the concept is still related to the concepts that students previously had, so …

Transformation Of Environmental Education (Plh) Learning With Contextual-Based E-Modules At Pabentengang Tpa, Najlah Shalsa Byla, Didik Taryana, Yusuf Suharto
Jurnal Pendidikan Humaniora
The development of this e-module is motivated by the limitations of PLH teaching materials which are only conceptual and do not link theory to real phenomena around students, for example the problem of waste management at the Pabentengang TPA. These limitations cause learning to be less interesting and meaningful. Therefore, this study aims to transform PLH learning through the development of contextual-based e-modules that link theory to local environmental problems directly. This study uses the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The validity of the product was assessed by material experts and …

Long-Term Assessment Of Cattail (Typha Spp.) Dynamics And Wetland Restoration In The Everglades Using Object-Based Landsat Time Series And Markov Modeling, Gideon Tandoh, Stephen Yankyera, Michael Sean Chenoweth
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Assessing long-term vegetation response to restoration requires spatially consistent monitoring approaches that capture both observed change and likely future trajectories. In the Florida Everglades, nutrient enrichment contributed to the expansion of cattail (Typha spp.) within Water Conservation Area 3A (WCA-3A), raising concerns about restoration effectiveness. This study integrates a multi-temporal Landsat time series (2004–2024), object-based image analysis (OBIA), support vector machine (SVM) classification, and Markov transition modeling to quantify and project vegetation change in WCA-3A. Object-based segmentation reduced classification fragmentation in heterogeneous marsh landscapes, while SVM improved separation among spectrally similar vegetation classes. Classification accuracies remained consistently high across sensors …

Relationship Between Hepatitis B Virus Screening, Vaccination, And Spread In Sierra Leone, Muhammed Sarmodu Mansaray
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) presents a significant public health burden in Sierra Leone. Although the estimated prevalence was 8.7% in 2021, comprehensive statistical data has been limited in general. Programmatic interventions for HBV control such as systematic screening and vaccination have remained limited as well. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship between screening and vaccination practices and HBV prevalence in Sierra Leone while controlling for age, sex, education and health care access. The theoretical framework incorporated the Integrated Screening Action model, which highlights screening as a critical disease prevention strategy, and the Social Ecological …
