"Ni Hao" Is The New "Aloha": Asia's Rise In Tourism, Julianne Binns Jun 2020

"Ni Hao" Is The New "Aloha": Asia's Rise In Tourism, Julianne Binns

Marriott Student Review

Asia has become one of the fastest growing areas in terms of travel and tourism. When it comes to investing in tourism (in ay form) one should keep a watchful eye on the region. This paper addresses the evidence of growth, reasons behind the growth, and what to expect in the future. As the region strengthens in economic power and shines light on its positives, more travelers are making their way to (or around) Asia. With coronavirus now being quelled in the region, it is only a matter of time before the numbers pick back up again. No doubt, the …

A Heuristic Model Of Organizational Boundaries As Contesting Spaces Of Betweenness In International Management, Diana J. Wong-Mingji Jun 2020

A Heuristic Model Of Organizational Boundaries As Contesting Spaces Of Betweenness In International Management, Diana J. Wong-Mingji

Global Advances in Business Communication

This paper examines organizational boundaries as contesting spaces of in betweenness that requires constant negotiations of multi-level cross-cultural differences. Traditionally, boundaries are viewed as relatively static imaginary lines that facilitate flow of information and resource exchanges between organizations and their environments. Membership and cultural identity employ power through separation to elevate the status and legitimacy of insiders over outsider. As dynamic and contested spaces, organizational boundaries are based on processes of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction in cross cultural relationships. Four significant functions of boundary are demarcation, perimeters, interfaces, and frontiers. Three contestations illustrate different complex problematics in the betweenness of …

Covid-19 And Numeracy: How About Them Numbers?, Joel Best Jun 2020

Covid-19 And Numeracy: How About Them Numbers?, Joel Best

Numeracy

Quantitative efforts to understand the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic need to be viewed through the lens of social construction. I begin by comparing the efforts to quantitatively measure the plague in London in 1665. Then I develop five propositions for studying the social construction of statistics: (1) facts are social constructions; (2) measuring involves making decisions, (3) counting is not straightforward; (4) all comparisons involve choices; and (5) social patterns shape numbers. After examining how these propositions affect what we know about COVID-19, I consider their implications for moving beyond mathematics when approaching numeracy.

[2020 Honorable Mention] Six Days To Leave Home: The Diasporic Experience Of Japanese Americans To American Incarceration Camps, Evangeline Pabilona

Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award

Using diaspora as a rhetorical framework, this paper analyses the cultural connection between American incarceration camps and the imprisonment of Japanese American citizens during World War II. The forced removal of Japanese American families from their homes to concentration camps emphasizes the negative ramifications of diaspora regarding [forced] cultural assimilation, as well as a loss of culture, language, family, and bodily autonomy.

Heavy Metals In The Arctic: Distribution And Enrichment Of Five Metals In Alaskan Soils, Clarice R. Perryman, Jochen Wirsing, Kathryn A. Bennett, Owen Brennick, Apryl L. Perry, Nicole Williamson, Jessica G. Ernakovich Jun 2020

Heavy Metals In The Arctic: Distribution And Enrichment Of Five Metals In Alaskan Soils, Clarice R. Perryman, Jochen Wirsing, Kathryn A. Bennett, Owen Brennick, Apryl L. Perry, Nicole Williamson, Jessica G. Ernakovich

Faculty Publications

Metal contamination of food and water resources is a known public health issue in Arctic and sub-Arctic communities due to the proximity of many communities to mining and drilling sites. In addition, permafrost thaw may release heavy metals sequestered in previously frozen soils, potentially contaminating food and water resources by increasing the concentration of metals in freshwater, plants, and wildlife. Here we assess the enrichment of selected heavy metals in Alaskan soils by synthesizing publicly available data of soil metal concentrations. We analyzed data of soil concentrations of arsenic, chromium, mercury, nickel, and lead from over 1,000 samples available through …

Wrack And Ruin: Legacy Hydrologic Effects Of Hurricane-Deposited Wrack On Hardwood-Hammock Coastal Islands, John T. Van Stan Ii, Scott T. Allen, Travis Swanson Jun 2020

Wrack And Ruin: Legacy Hydrologic Effects Of Hurricane-Deposited Wrack On Hardwood-Hammock Coastal Islands, John T. Van Stan Ii, Scott T. Allen, Travis Swanson

Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications

Hurricanes can cause immediate catastrophic destruction of marsh vegetation and erosion of soils; however, they also have long-lasting ecological impacts. Those impacts include the deposition of tremendous amounts of saltmarsh litter ('wrack') onto upland ecosystems, the hydrologic effects of which have not previously been investigated. When Hurricane Irma battered the southeastern US coastline, widespread wrack deposition was reported (often exceeding 0.5 m depth), especially in vulnerable coastal hammock ecosystems: locally-elevated forests within the saltmarshes that rely on freshwater inputs from rain. We report the impacts of this deposited wrack, which has persisted for 2 years, on effective precipitation inputs to …

Diversity And Disability: Why Disability Services Syllabi Statements Hurt Inclusivity., Tracy Spencer Jun 2020

Diversity And Disability: Why Disability Services Syllabi Statements Hurt Inclusivity., Tracy Spencer

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

This project explores the language of disability services syllabi statements. Using Van Dijk’s concept of Critical Discourse Analysis, I analyze the semiotic choices made within the statements of west coast public universities and Jesuit universities. I ask: How do disability services syllabi statements represent the people they are meant to serve? Through a critical discourse analysis of the use of language and semiotic choices, I argue that disability services syllabi statements can function to suppress the power of disabled students, minimizing their agency while promoting ableist ideologies.

Keywords: Critical discourse analysis, semiotic choices, disability services syllabi statements

Interrogating Colonial Legacies: Jeffrey Gibson’S Indigenous Futurism., Mariah Ribeiro Jun 2020

Interrogating Colonial Legacies: Jeffrey Gibson’S Indigenous Futurism., Mariah Ribeiro

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

In recent decades, post-colonial theory has allowed for scholars to re-contextualize American history, challenging the mythic narrative of the founding and settlement of the United States. This awareness of settler colonialism’s effect on every aspect of society calls for widespread accountability towards dismantling colonial legacies within the Americas. Such a shift in understanding has inherent consequences for the arts, raising the question: how do visual arts and their institutions function within the settler-colonial context of North America? As the subjects of ongoing settler-colonialism, Native American artists are uniquely positioned to participate in the dismantlement of the colonial legacy of art …

Framing The Center: Belize And Panamá Within The Central American Imagined Community., Isabeau J. Belisle Dempsey

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper explores the historical roots and contemporary manifestations of Belize and Panamá’s exclusion from the Central American “imagined community”—that is, the definition of which countries comprise “Central America.” While there are seven countries that geographically exist in the region, not all seven are always classified as belonging to Central America due to factors such as differences in histories, racial distribution, and cultural expressions, among others. The aim of this article is to more fully explore and analyze the many reasons behind these exclusions and to propose a reconsideration of the narrative, thereby creating the possibility of an expanded and …

Agroclimatic Zoning For Cultivation Of Saffron Using Ahp Approach In Sarab, Navid Yaghoubzadeh, Razieh Pourdarbani, Ardavan Ghorbani, Gholamhossein Shahgholi Jun 2020

Agroclimatic Zoning For Cultivation Of Saffron Using Ahp Approach In Sarab, Navid Yaghoubzadeh, Razieh Pourdarbani, Ardavan Ghorbani, Gholamhossein Shahgholi

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

According to agricultural experts, saffron is one of the crops that can be a good solution to the problem of drought in a water crisis situation. A plant which uses low water consumption and high economic incomes is a good alternative to wheat, a water-consuming crop. Saffron does not need water at all in the summer, and in the fall and winter, rain will irrigate this crop and require very little water during the year. This study was conducted to select the optimum location of saffron cultivation and its comparative study in Sarab with regard to the role of important …

Animal Magic, Secret Spells, And Green Power: More-Than-Human Assemblages Of Children's Storytelling, Angela Molloy Murphy Jun 2020

Animal Magic, Secret Spells, And Green Power: More-Than-Human Assemblages Of Children's Storytelling, Angela Molloy Murphy

Dissertations and Theses

Early childhood settings have become contested spaces, or sites of struggle, between economic and sociocultural interests disputing their purpose. Recent years have shown increased pressure on children in early education settings to demonstrate predetermined learning outcomes, which (a) limits the scope of what is possible in the classroom, (b) narrows the range of what learning is considered valid, and (c) privileges the experience and values of the dominant culture, thereby determining who and what matters in early childhood settings. Thus, in the current education climate where conventional knowledges are routinely privileged, unconventional knowledges and small stories from children's lives are …

Indigenous Feminism Perspectives On Environmental Justice, Deborah Mcgregor Jun 2020

Indigenous Feminism Perspectives On Environmental Justice, Deborah Mcgregor

Articles & Book Chapters

In this chapter, you will learn about the emergence of a distinct theoretical, methodological, and practical approach for accounting for gender in relation to environmental justice called Indigenous feminism. Indigenous feminism will be defined and outlined as an important field of study to advance the contributions, insights, rights, and responsibilities of Indigenous women. While the ideology of feminism has been in existence for decades, Indigenous feminism has only recently emerged. Joyce Green, an Indigenous scholar, writes that Indigenous feminism seeks to “raise issues of colonialism, racism and sexism and unpleasant synergies between these three violations of human rights” (Green, 2007, …

An Evaluation Of Respiratory Exacerbation In New York City Given Current Trends In Climate Variability And Predictive Sociodemographic Factors, Sarah L.R. Kuril Jun 2020

An Evaluation Of Respiratory Exacerbation In New York City Given Current Trends In Climate Variability And Predictive Sociodemographic Factors, Sarah L.R. Kuril

Dissertations and Theses

Background: Within the last century, the massive increase in emissions due to economic growth has made climate variability a major problem for many of the industrialized countries and an emerging problem for the rest of the world. With an increasing number of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, cold fronts, floods, heavy rain, and storms, individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma remain a vulnerable population, placing them at highest risk of respiratory exacerbation. This dissertation aims to contribute to our understanding of how climate variability, which can influence patterns of rainfall, temperature and other variables on …

Policy Storms At The Central Office: Conflicting Narratives Of Racial Equity And Segregation At School Committee Meetings, Serena M. Wilcox Jun 2020

Policy Storms At The Central Office: Conflicting Narratives Of Racial Equity And Segregation At School Committee Meetings, Serena M. Wilcox

Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications

This article reports findings from a multiyear critical ethnography that examined race talk dilemmas of school leaders at the central office at a small urban school district to understand why racialized educational policies and practices still persist against African American students. This study takes a structural approach to investigating the impact that race talk has on educational policymaking at the local district level. The guiding research question in this paper examines how we can understand educational reform and policy implementation and the unintended consequences of those interventions through the local from a historical context.

Webinar: Findings From 15 Years Of Travel Surveys At Portland Area Transit-Oriented Developments (Tods), Jennifer Dill, Nathan Mcneil

TREC Webinar Series

Since 2005, Portland State University has periodically surveyed occupants of recently developed higher-density and mixed-use projects near transit, often referred to as Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs). The general objectives of the surveys were to better understand actual transit use, among other factors, of residents in these buildings. Between 2005 and 2018, the research team surveyed residents of nearly 50 TODs. With funding from Metro and the National Institute for Transportation and Communities, the research team carried out a two-pronged study drawing on this wealth of data. First, we explore geographic differences within the Portland region in terms of travel behavior and …

When Considering Federal Privacy Legislation, Neil Chilson Jun 2020

When Considering Federal Privacy Legislation, Neil Chilson

Pepperdine Law Review

Legislators, advocates, and business interests are proposing federal privacy legislation with new urgency. The United States has a long-established federal framework for addressing commercial privacy concerns, including general consumer protection law and sector-specific legislation. But the calls to expand or replace this approach have grown louder since Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation went into effect and since California adopted detailed and prescriptive privacy legislation. Should we create a U.S. federal privacy law, and if so, how? When considering any kind of privacy regulation, three concepts are fundamental. First, no one can control all information about them. Second, all privacy laws …

Toxic Structures: Speculation And Lead Exposure In Detroit's Single-Family Rental Market, Alexa Eisenberg, Eric Seymour, Alex B. Hill, Joshua Akers

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Foreclosure sales permitted investors to purchase large volumes of low-cost residential properties after the last financial crisis, reshaping patterns of property ownership in low-income housing markets across the US. This study links post-foreclosure property acquisitions by investor-landlords to subsequent lead poisoning cases among children under age six living in Detroit, Michigan. We find that the odds of exhibiting elevated blood lead levels (≥ 5 μg/dL) are higher for children living in investor-owned homes purchased through tax foreclosure sale. These findings highlight the potential for property speculation in post-foreclosure housing markets to exacerbate severe and racialized burdens of excess lead toxicity …

Variable Growth Across Species And Life Stages In Caribbean Reef Octocorals, Natascha Borgstein, Diana M. Beltrán, Carlos Prada

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Growth rates often measured as linear extension rates can serve as a proxy for organismal performance across environments, yet few estimates of these growth rates exist, and fewer are reported from multi-year monitoring. We studied the effect of species, depth, exposure, and life stages on the linear extension rates of common octocorals inhabiting Caribbean reefs. We monitored 16 species from the families Briareidae, Gorgoniidae, and Plexauridae, including eight genera: Antillogorgia, Briareum, Eunicea, Gorgonia, Muricea, Muriceopsis, Plexaura, and Plexaurella. We surveyed over 2,000 colonies across eight reefs in Southwest Puerto Rico from 2003 to 2006. Our surveys include reefs …

© 2020 American Psychological Association. Telepsychotherapy (also referred to as telehealth or telemental health), the use of videoconferencing to deliver psychotherapy services, offers an innovative way to address significant gaps in access to care and is being used to deliver a variety of treatments for youth. Although recent research has supported the effectiveness of telehealth delivery of a variety of interventions for children, the literature has focused very little on childhood posttraumatic stress disorder. This pilot study examined the feasibility and potential effectiveness of trauma-focused cognitive- behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) delivered via telepsychotherapy in community-based locations of either schools or patient …

Vr-Notes: A Perspective-Based, Multimedia Annotation System In Virtual Reality, Justin Luo Jun 2020

Vr-Notes: A Perspective-Based, Multimedia Annotation System In Virtual Reality, Justin Luo

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Virtual reality (VR) has begun to emerge as a new technology in the commercial and research space, and many people have begun to utilize VR technologies in their workflows. To improve user productivity in these scenarios, annotation systems in VR allow users to capture insights and observations while in VR sessions. In the digital, 3D world of VR, we can design annotation systems to take advantage of these capabilities to provide a richer annotation viewing experience. I propose VR-Notes, a design for a new annotation system in VR that focuses on capturing the annotator's perspective for both "doodle" annotations and …

Reassessing Aspects Of The Contribution Of African States To The Development Of International Law Through African Regional Multilateral Treaties, Tiyanjana Maluwa Jun 2020

Reassessing Aspects Of The Contribution Of African States To The Development Of International Law Through African Regional Multilateral Treaties, Tiyanjana Maluwa

Michigan Journal of International Law

For decades, debates about Africa’s contribution to the development of international law have been dominated by two opposing schools of thought. First, that European colonial powers deliberately erased Africa and Africans from the history of the creation and use of international law. Second, that, on the contrary, over the last six decades (since the emergence of the newly independent African states in the late 1950s and early 1960s), Africa has contributed to the making of international law and has not been merely a passive recipient of a Eurocentric international law.

This article underscores the role of the postcolonial periphery in …
