Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

In Mekong riparian countries, hydropower development provides energy, but also threatens biodiversity, ecosystems, food security, and an unparalleled freshwater fishery. The Sekong, Sesan, and Srepok Rivers (3S Basin) are major tributaries to the Lower Mekong River (LMB), making up 10% of the Mekong watershed but supporting nearly 40% of the fish species of the LMB. Forty-five dams have been built, are under construction, or are planned in the 3S Basin. We completed a meta-analysis of aquatic and riparian environmental losses from current, planned, and proposed hydropower dams in the 3S and LMB using 46 papers and reports from the past …

Analisis Konflik Hukum Dan Simulasi Pernyataan Pendirian Perseroan Terbatas Oleh Pendiri Tunggal, Adinda Afifa Putri

Climatic Drivers Of Verticillium Dahliae Occurrence In Mediterranean Olive-Growing Areas Of Southern Spain, Juan M. Requena-Mullor, Jose Manuel García-Garrido, Pedro Antonio García, Estefanía Rodríguez

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Verticillium wilt, caused by the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae, is one of the most harmful diseases in Mediterranean olive-growing areas. Although, the effects of both soil temperature and moisture on V. dahliae are well known, there is scant knowledge about what climatic drivers affect the occurrence of the pathogen on a large scale. Here, we investigate what climatic drivers determine V. dahliae occurrence in olive-growing areas in southern Spain. In order to bridge this gap in knowledge, a large-scale field survey was carried out to collect data on the occurrence of V. dahliae in 779 olive groves in Granada …

Interpreting The Conditions For Imprévision: The Goals Of The Reform Projects As A Decisive Tool For French And Belgian Courts, Luigi Montefusco

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The codification of the doctrine of imprévision in France and its codification attempt in Belgium is a significant turning point given the historical resistance in both countries towards it. Nevertheless, the fact that the French and Belgian civil codes had remained silent on the issue for more than 200 years poses problems of interpretation, in particular, with the regard to requirements to be met in or-der to trigger imprévision as set forth by new Article 1195 of the French Civil Code and Draft Article 5.77 of Belgian legislative pro-posal No. 3709/1 of April 3, 2019. In the absence of a …

Diarrhea, soil-transmitted helminth infection and malnutrition are leading causes of child mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To reduce the prevalence of these diseases, effective interventions for adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) should be implemented. This paper describes the design of a cluster-randomized controlled trial that will compare the efficacy of four school-based WaSH interventions for improving children’s health literacy, handwashing, and nutrition. Interventions consisted of (1) WaSH policy reinforcement; (2) low-, medium-, or high-volume health education; (3) hygiene supplies; and (4) WaSH facilities (e.g., toilets, urinals, handwashing basins) improvements. We randomly allocated school clusters from the intervention …

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a postnatal withdrawal syndrome among neonates born to mothers with drug dependence disorders. NAS poses a significant public health challenge nationally, with a six-fold increase in incidence (1.2 to 6.7 per 1000 hospital births/year) from 2000–2016. Besides national data, it is critical to quantify NAS at the state-level to identify target areas for prevention. The objectives of this study were to ascertain statewide burden, including county and regional distribution of NAS in Nevada during 2016–2018, and to investigate potential factors associated with NAS. This study utilized hospital administrative data, and a total of 100,845 inpatient …

Super-Diversity Inside And Outside Of Congregations In Elmhurst, Queens, Richard Cimino, Hans Tokke

Publications and Research

This chapter looks at the role congregations play in a “superdiverse” neighborhood, characterized by recent immigration and strong ethic and religious pluralism. We are particularly interested in how diversity shapes a neighborhood’s religious ecology and how congregations and other groups relate to their neighborhood; how do they respond to this diversity in their ministries to their own congregants and to those outside their walls, and how do they interact with other faith communities? Further, to what degree do individuals follow the ideal of pluralism as they live their lives within their own enclave? We find that bonding rather than bridging …

Abstract

At its core, journalism is a civic enterprise with a mission to help citizens better understand their world and communities. Fulfilling this lofty mission in today’s digital media landscape poses new and evolving challenges, but it also presents a unique opportunity to reexamine the relationship between storytellers and their audiences. Advancements in the learning sciences in recent decades offer important insights into how the mind works. In teaching and learning, pedagogical experts and practitioners increasingly utilize these insights to refine and implement instructional strategies that increase student engagement, motivation, and learning. This capstone project aims to establish a framework …

Older Adults Living Alone In Thailand: Socioeconomic Inequality And Its Relation To Unmet Health Needs, Natthani Meemon, Seung Chun Paek

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This study aimed to investigate socioeconomic inequality and its relation to unmet health needs among older adults living alone in Thailand. Descriptive analyses with F-tests and chi-squared tests, and logistic regression analyses were conducted with the national health census 2017 data. The results indicated that older adults living alone, compared to those not living alone, had significantly low socioeconomic conditions and high unmet needs. They were more likely to be lower-income, older, female, lower-educated, unemployed, and chronically-ill people. Particularly for income, the proportion of people with income below the national poverty line among older adults living alone (38.75%) were almost …

Principled Eclecticism: A Mix And Match Solution For Rural Thai Classrooms?, Andrew Biggs, Oranuch Limtasiri, Umporn Watchana

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The methodology of principled eclecticism employs a number of different teaching theories towards a specific set of goals. This quasi-experimental qualitative research examined whether principled eclecticism would affect learning achievements and attitude towards English by students in remote areas of Thailand, with a view to re-examining Thailand’s educational policy. A total of 20 hours of teaching was conducted on primary school students at a school in the remote rural northeastern province of Kalasin using principled eclecticism. Pre- and post-tests revealed improved learning achievements to a significant degree; however, when broken down into sections, significant learning achievements tended to be in …

Scoping Review: An Anthropological Analysis Of The Beliefs Of The Elderly That Influence The Use Of Traditional/Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Le Thi Ngoc Phuc, Mark Stephan Felix

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The use of traditional medicines is commonplace among the elderly population. With the growth of this population, a scoping review to ascertain the beliefs that influence decisions to use traditional/complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) was undertaken. This scoping review focused on identifying the beliefs of members of the elderly population regarding TCAM, especially in comparison with western medicine. The researchers used the methodological framework for a scoping review by Arksey and O’Malley (2005). The main steps of this scoping review included (a) searching for relevant studies, (b) selecting studies based on specific inclusion criteria, (c) extracting data into a charting …

A Silicon Valley Life: A Silicon Valley Love Story, Sharon Simonson

Master's Theses

In the last three decades, Silicon Valley has become one of the world’s most watched and imitated communities. Daily news reporters, long-form journalists, cinema and television-programming producers have crafted a public image, but it represents nothing of the lives of hundreds of thousands of Valley residents. These fabrications obscure and diminish our complex human profile and reduce our uniquely beautiful geography to a place to generate financial profits, with all the damaging disregard such attitudes foster. The essays of A Silicon Valley Life: A Silicon Valley Love Story seek to show our true self: our rich mix of people drawn …
