Owiredu, Michael Appiah, Christian Obirikorang, Evans Asamoah Adu, Vincent Boima, Ernestine Kubi Amos-Abanyie, Priscilla Abena Akyaw, Eddie-Williams Owiredu, Emmanuel Acheampong

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant comorbidity among hypertensive patients. Polymorphisms in the non-muscle myosin heavy chain 9 gene (MYH9) have been demonstrated to be significantly associated with CKD, among African- and European-derived populations. We investigated the spectrum of MYH9-associated CKD among Ghanaian hypertensive patients. Methods: The study constituted a total of 264 hypertensive patients. Hypertensive patients with glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 ml/min/1.73m (CKD-EPI formula) or clinically diagnosed were defined as case subjects ( = 132) while those with eGFR ≥60 ml/min/1.73m were classified as control subjects ( = 132). Demographic data were obtained with a questionnaire and anthropometric measurements were taken. Five (5) millilitres (ml) of venous blood was drawn from study subjects into gel and EDTA vacutainer tubes. Two (2) mL of EDTA anticoagulated blood was used for genomic DNA extraction while three (3) mL of blood was processed to obtain serum for biochemical measurements. Genotyping of MYH9 polymorphisms (rs3752462) was done employing Tetra primer Amplification Refractory Mutation System (T-ARMS) polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Spot urine samples were also collected for urinalysis. Hardy-Weinberg population was assessed. Logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms and CKD. Results: The cases and control participants differed in terms of age, sex, family history, and duration of CKD (-value < 0.001). The minor allele frequencies of rs3752462 SNP were 0.820 and 0.567 respectively among the control and case subjects. Patients with the heterozygote genotype of rs3752462 (CT) were more likely to develop CKD [aOR = 7.82 (3.81-16.04)] whereas those with homozygote recessive variant (TT) were protective [aOR = 0.12 (0.06-0.25)]. Single nucleotide polymorphism of rs3752462 (CT genotype) was associated with increased proteinuria, albuminuria, and reduced eGFR. Conclusions: We have demonstrated that MYH9 polymorphisms exist among Ghanaian hypertensive patients and rs3752462 polymorphism of MYH9 is associated with CKD. This baseline indicates that further longitudinal and multi-institutional studies in larger cohorts in Ghana are warranted to evaluate MYH9 SNP as an independent predictor of CKD among hypertensive patients in Ghana.

Mechanisms Underpinning An Improvement In Dynamic Muscle Force Production Following A High-Intensity Warm-Up, Cody J. Wilson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The present research explored the mechanisms underpinning the enhancement of voluntary knee extensor torque after (1) extensive task-specific practice, and then (2) brief, intense warm-up exercise (conditioning activity; CA) as part of a complete warm-up routine. The same warm-up was completed in two Experiments (detailed below). In Experiment 1, voluntary (180⁰·s-1; T180) and electrically-evoked (isometric) knee extensor torques and electromyogram (EMG) and muscle temperature (Tm) data were recorded before and after (1) extensive task-specific practice where peak voluntary knee extensor performance was achieved, and (2) two isokinetic CAs matched for total concentric contraction time (CA60: 5 repetitions at 60⁰·s-1 vs. …

Cross-Border Regulation Of Securities Markets In Asean, Wai Yee Wan Jan 2020

Cross-Border Regulation Of Securities Markets In Asean, Wai Yee Wan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

How does cross-border regulation of securities markets work in Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)? How closely are the securities markets coordinated within ASEAN from the regulatory perspective? What is the optimal regulatory model of integration of securities markets that balances the economic benefits of integration and yet minimizes the risks of contagion and advances the state’s national goals? The issues posed by these questions are important against the background of strong growth of the Asian economies and Asian capital markets, and how the ASEAN states can take advantage of such growth to facilitate economic growth. According to the …

Land Of The Falling "Poison Pill" Understanding Defensive Measures In Japan On Their Own Terms, Alan K. Koh, Masafumi Nakahigashi, Dan W. Puchniak Jan 2020

Land Of The Falling "Poison Pill" Understanding Defensive Measures In Japan On Their Own Terms, Alan K. Koh, Masafumi Nakahigashi, Dan W. Puchniak

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Embraced by United States ("U.S.") managers in the 1980s as a lifeline in a sea of hostile takeovers, the poison pill fundamentally altered the trajectory of American corporate governance. When a hostile takeover wave seemed imminent in Japan in the mid-2000s, Japanese boards appeared to embrace this American invention with equal enthusiasm. Japan's experience should have been a ringing endorsement for the utility of American corporate governance solutions in foreign jurisdictions -but it was not to be. Japan's unique interpretation of the "poison pill" that was so eagerly adopted by Japanese companies in the mid-to-late 2000s has turned out to …

Gait Entrainment In Coupled Oscillator Systems: Clarifying The Role Of Energy Optimization In Human Walking, Ryan T. Schroeder Jan 2020

Gait Entrainment In Coupled Oscillator Systems: Clarifying The Role Of Energy Optimization In Human Walking, Ryan T. Schroeder

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Empirical evidence suggests that parameters of human gait (e.g. step frequency, step length) tend to minimize energy expenditure. However, it is unclear if individuals can adapt to dynamic environments in real time, i.e. continuously optimize energy expenditure, and to what extent. Two coupled oscillator systems were used to test the learned interactions of individuals within dynamic environments: (1) experienced farmworkers carrying oscillating loads on a flexible bamboo pole and (2) individuals walking on a treadmill while strapped to a mechatronics oscillator system providing periodic forces to the body. Reductionist trajectory optimization models predicted energy-minimizing gait interactions within the coupled oscillator …

Rdtids: Rules And Decision Tree-Based Intrusion Detection System For Internet-Of-Things Networks, Mohammad Amine Ferrag, Leandros Maglaras, Ahmed Ahmim, Makhlouf Derdour, Helge Janicke

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper proposes a novel intrusion detection system (IDS), named RDTIDS, for Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. The RDTIDS combines different classifier approaches which are based on decision tree and rules-based concepts, namely, REP Tree, JRip algorithm and Forest PA. Specifically, the first and second method take as inputs features of the data set, and classify the network traffic as Attack/Benign. The third classifier uses features of the initial data set in addition to the outputs of the first and the second classifier as inputs. The experimental results obtained by analyzing the proposed IDS using the CICIDS2017 dataset and BoT-IoT dataset, attest …

Platelet Rich Fibrin As A Gingival Tissue Regeneration Enhancer, Ioana Codruta Mirica, Bianca Petrescu, Richard Miron, Radu Campian, Ondine Lucaciu

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Tissue regenerative procedures aim to enhance regeneration of altered tissue. Extensive research has been carried out in this area and all proposed procedures present limitations. In this context the area of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) research has gained tremendous awareness in the latest years. PRF is a low-cost regenerative modality that facilitates soft tissue regeneration derived from 100% autologous sources. It forms a fibrin mesh that liberates growth factors in a slow and prolonged manner and also contains supra-physiological concentrations of leukocytes. Reports from the literature have suggested that these leukocyte-rich blood-preparations are capable of improving wound healing, diminishing post-operative …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract People with disabilities are challenged managing their oral hygiene and more often burdened with oral diseases. They often require immediate dental treatment for severe pain and greater precautions are needed to cope with COVID-19. The potential for COVID-19 infection can be relatively high in patients with disabilities due to concomitant systemic diseases, unique individual circumstances, relationship with caregivers and the living conditions of long-term care facilities, which make them vulnerable to the virus. For behavior management, dental treatment is often provided under general anesthesia with meticulous preoperative evaluation and the use of high-quality viral filters. In response to COVID-19, …

Mobile Ka-Band Polarimetric Doppler Radar Observations Of Wildfire Smoke Plumes, Taylor Brianna Aydell Jan 2020

Mobile Ka-Band Polarimetric Doppler Radar Observations Of Wildfire Smoke Plumes, Taylor Brianna Aydell

Master's Theses

Remote sensing techniques have been more recently used to study and track wildfire smoke plume structure and evolution; however, knowledge gaps remain due to the limited availability of observational datasets aimed at understanding the fine-scale fire-atmosphere interactions and plume microphysics. In this study, we present a new mobile millimeter-wave (Ka-band) Doppler radar system acquired to sample the fine-scale kinematics and microphysical properties of active wildfire smoke plumes from both wildfires and large prescribed fires. Four field deployments were conducted in the fall of 2019 during two wildfires in California and one prescribed burn in Utah. An additional dataset of precipitation …

Racial Purges, Robert L. Tsai Jan 2020

Racial Purges, Robert L. Tsai

Faculty Scholarship

In a two-year period, 1885-86, over 168 communities in America forcibly expelled Chinese residents from their midst. This essay, inspired by historian Beth Lew-Williams's book, THE CHINESE MUST GO, investigates the nineteenth-century purges of Chinese residents that occurred throughout the American west. I make three arguments. First, these acts of racial and political terror complicate our understanding of racial violence in America. Many of the actions were denounced, but they were also surprisingly effective in forcing business and political leaders to support the indefinite suspension of Chinese migration. Perpetrators faced almost no legal repercussions, and unlike for freed persons, racial …

We previously discovered microRNAs (miRNAs) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that differentiate Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients from Controls. Here we examined the performance of 37 candidate AD miRNA biomarkers in a new and independent cohort of CSF from 47 AD patients and 71 Controls on custom TaqMan arrays. We employed a consensus ranking approach to provide an overall priority score for each miRNA, then used multimarker models to assess the relative contributions of the top-ranking miRNAs to differentiate AD from Controls. We assessed classification performance of the top-ranking miRNAs when combined with apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) genotype status or CSF amyloid-β42 (Aβ42):total …

Narrative Therapy To Reduce Self-Stigma: Empowering Children, Adolescents, And Their Families, Jillian Baldwin Jan 2020

Narrative Therapy To Reduce Self-Stigma: Empowering Children, Adolescents, And Their Families, Jillian Baldwin

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

The effects of self-stigma on children and adolescents with mental health diagnoses is a documented psychological issue in academic literature; however, no studies or articles to date present strategies for reducing its negative effects. Additionally, very few studies have connected the experience of parental stigma, or courtesy/affiliate stigma, and its effects on child and family well-being. Self-stigma has been conceptualized as existing on the opposite end of the spectrum from empowerment, suggesting that empowerment may serve as a promising approach to tackling self-stigmatization. This paper presents a novel therapeutic intervention for reducing self-stigma in children, adolescents, and their families through …

The Role Of Awareness In Traumatic Brain Injuries: Interviews With Experts, Dominique Chao Jan 2020

The Role Of Awareness In Traumatic Brain Injuries: Interviews With Experts, Dominique Chao

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Approximately 2.8 million US citizens sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) annually, with more than 275,000 requiring inpatient rehabilitation (Taylor, Bell & Breiding, 2013). As rehabilitation techniques are refined and adapted to increase the speed of recovery and functional independence following TBIs, there is an ongoing need for better prognostic assessment tools. Research has shown that a lack of self-awareness following TBI is associated with poorer outcomes (e.g. employability, community reintegration) following discharge from inpatient hospitalizations (Cheng & Man, 2006; Robertson & Schmitter, 2016) and can result in decreased motivation (Simmonds & Fleming, 2003), compromised safety, poor community re-integration, and …

The COVID-19 pandemic has cast the United States, along with the rest of the world, into a time of crisis and uncertainty unlike any other in recent memory. Months into the pandemic, there is scant agreement among scientists, government officials, and large segments of the public, both domestic and abroad, as to determining the causes and workings of the virus, designing appropriate and effective responses to the outbreak, and constructing accurate assessments of the future—or even of the present. Indeed, the availability of concrete information about the virus and its effects is grossly inadequate and often replaced by anecdotal or …

Lawyers do not reflect the racial diversity in the United States. The legal profession continues to struggle with ways to achieve and maintain racial diversity. Law schools play a critical role in the path to practice, and therefore an examination of the barriers to the profession they created is warranted. This essay critiques the over-reliance on standardized testing in law school admissions and advocates for an open admissions process that prioritizes racial and academic diversity. It suggests that the benefits of minimizing the role of standardized tests far outweigh any perceived costs in legal education. This essay concludes that the …

Many studies have suggested the modifications and generalizations of the Weibull distribution to model the nonmonotone hazards. In this paper, we combine the logarithms of two cumulative hazard rate functions and propose a new modified form of the Weibull distribution. The newly proposed distribution may be called a new flexible extended Weibull distribution. Corresponding hazard rate function of the proposed distribution shows flexible (monotone and nonmonotone) shapes. Three different characterizations along with some mathematical properties are provided. We also consider the maximum likelihood estimation procedure to estimate the model parameters. For the illustrative purposes, two real applications from reliability engineering …
