Practical Server-Side Indoor Localization: Tackling Cardinality Outlier Challenges, Anuradha Ravi, Archan Misra Jan 2020

Practical Server-Side Indoor Localization: Tackling Cardinality Outlier Challenges, Anuradha Ravi, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In spite of many advances in indoor localization techniques, practical implementation of robust device independent, server-side Wi-Fi localization (i.e., without any active participation of client devices) remains a challenge. This work utilizes an operationally-deployed Wi-Fi based indoor location infrastructure, based on the classical RADAR algorithm, to tackle two such practical challenges: (a) low cardinality, whereby only the associated AP generates sufficient RSSI reports and (b) outlier identification, which requires explicit identification of mobile clients that are attached to the Wi-Fi network but outside the fingerprinted region. To tackle the low-cardinality problem, we present a technique that uses cardinality changes to …

Server-Aided Revocable Attribute-Based Encryption For Cloud Computing Services, Hui Cui, Tsz Hon Yuen, Robert H. Deng, Guilin Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute-based encryption (ABE) has been regarded as a promising solution in cloud computing services to enable scalable access control without compromising the security. Despite of the advantages, efficient user revocation has been a challenge in ABE. One suggestion for user revocation is using the binary tree in the key generation phase of an ABE scheme, which enables a trusted key generation center to periodically distribute the key update information to all nonrevoked users over a public channel. This revocation approach reduces the size of key updates from linear to logarithmic in the number of users. But it requires each user …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There only exists one deterministic identity-based encryption (DIBE) scheme which is adaptively secure in the auxiliary-input setting, under the learning with errors (LWE) assumption. However, the master public key consists of basic matrices. In this paper, we consider to construct adaptively secure DIBE schemes with more compact public parameters from the LWE problem. (i) On the one hand, we gave a generic DIBE construction from lattice-based programmable hash functions with high min-entropy. (ii) On the other hand, when instantiating our generic DIBE construction with four LPHFs with high min-entropy, we can get four adaptively secure DIBE schemes with more compact …

China’S Regulatory Approach To The Sharing Economy: A Perspective On Ride-Hailing, Huiqin Jiang, Heng Wang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

While the sharing economy brings significant social benefits in China, it comes with regulatory challenges that are novel and unpredictable. How should regulators handle these challenges? This paper offers fresh insights into the regulatory approach to the ride-hailing industry, the most comprehensively regulated sharing industry in China. A historical review identifies three regulatory approaches deployed to date: self-regulation, market-based regulation and government regulation. Self-regulation relies on the platforms with incentive to provide better service for greater profit, and to deal with sharing-specific challenges. Market-based regulation invites rivals to keep a watchful eye on other players, in order to enhance their …

Holding Company's Liability For Inducing Its Subsidiary's Contractual Breach, Pearlie M. C. Koh Jan 2020

Holding Company's Liability For Inducing Its Subsidiary's Contractual Breach, Pearlie M. C. Koh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

A decision by a company to breach a contract is necessarily made on its behalf by one or more natural persons. Although the relevant decision-makers may be said to have “procured” the company’s breach of contract, there is authority, albeit not without detractors (see Welsh Development Agency v Export Finance Co Ltd [1992] B.C.L.C. 148; [1992] B.C.C. 270), for the proposition that these individuals are not to be made liable in the tort of inducing breach of contract, provided they had acted in good faith and within the scope of their authority (Said v Butt [1920] 3 K.B. 497). As …

The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (“RIPA”) establishes the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (“IPT”), which hears complaints relating to surveillance activities by public authorities. The Supreme Court case of R (Privacy International) v Investigatory Powers Tribunal (“Privacy International”) concerned the Secretary of State’s power under section 5 of the Intelligence Services Act 1994 to issue a warrant authorising MI5, MI6, or GCHQ to enter or interfere with property “specified” in the warrant. The IPT had to decide whether it was lawful for the Secretary of State to issue a warrant in respect of a class of property (sometimes known as …

Sexual Grooming As An Offence In Singapore, S. Chandra Mohan, Yingqi Lee Jan 2020

Sexual Grooming As An Offence In Singapore, S. Chandra Mohan, Yingqi Lee

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The offence of sexual grooming of a minor under 16 was introduced in the Singapore Penal Code (Cap 224, 2008 Rev Ed) in 2007. It was designed to protect the growing number of young Internet users from adult sex predators prowling the online platforms. However, there have been very few reported cases of sexual grooming under s 376E of the Penal Code and a noticeable dearth of any local legal comment on this provision. Until the review by the Penal Code Review Committee in 2018 and the consequent legislative changes in May 2019, the offence of sexual grooming has not …

Privacy Injuries And Article Iii Concreteness, Peter Ormerod Jan 2020

Privacy Injuries And Article Iii Concreteness, Peter Ormerod

Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court's 2016 decision in Spokeo, Inc. v. Robins requires federal courts to investigate the "concreteness"of a plaintiff's injury, even after Congress has recognized the injury by statute. Spokeo's concreteness discussion is a confusing mixture of several distinct considerations, and there is little rhyme or reason to how the lower courts have interpreted and applied Spokeo to other statutorily authorized injuries.

This Article identifies four distinct informational injuries in the Court's past cases: injuries arising from the withholding, acquiring, using, and disseminating of information. To avoid Spokeo's mistakes, federal courts should give binding deference to Congress's decision to make an …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The importance of communication in every aspect of our lives cannot be understated, in many ways it is the foundation upon which society rests. As a result of communication being ubiquitous in nature, it becomes inevitable that at some point conflict will occur as competing ideas, world views, or beliefs are exchanged. This inevitability, therefore, necessitates researchers make attempts to better understand the role conflict tendencies can play in influencing communication variables that are generally understood to be pro-social. The researcher administered a questionnaire to 226 college students from one private university and three community colleges on the west coast …

Amphibian Vocalization: Implications Of A Novel Laryngeal Muscle In The Calling Mechanisms Of The TúNgara Frog Engystomops Pustulosus, Amy D. Lagorio Jan 2020

Amphibian Vocalization: Implications Of A Novel Laryngeal Muscle In The Calling Mechanisms Of The TúNgara Frog Engystomops Pustulosus, Amy D. Lagorio

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The current functional model of the anuran larynx includes four pairs of laryngeal muscles. Their contractions do not account, however, for the behavioral control of call complexity observed in male túngara frogs (Engystomops pustulosus), which optionally add a secondary note with distinct harmonic structure to their advertisement call. Examination of the túngara frog's laryngeal morphology through dissection, microtomography, and resin histology has revealed that the m. dilatator laryngis is divided into two separate bundles (superficial and deep). The superficial bundle closely matches the typical description of the m. dilatator laryngis and is well positioned to open the glottis. …

Midazole-Based Ph-Sensitive Convertible Liposomes For Anticancer Drug Delivery, Ruiqi Huang Jan 2020

Midazole-Based Ph-Sensitive Convertible Liposomes For Anticancer Drug Delivery, Ruiqi Huang

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Solid tumors possess biological features that are different from those in healthy tissues, which provides opportunities of anticancer treatment by nanomedicines. Due to the presence of the fenestrated tumor vasculatures, nanomedicines can selectively accumulate in tumor tissues by the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. The acidic pH in tumor interstitium (pH 6.0-7.0) also provides a promising mechanism to trigger the nanomedicines to promote the cellular uptake of cargo drugs. The previously reported stealth liposomes coated with PEG are known to accumulate in tumors owing to their prolonged circulation time. The PEG coating on liposomes can hinder serum protein adsorption …
