Hiding In Plain Sight: Mediation, Client-Centered Practice, And The Value Of Human Agency, Robert A. Baruch Bush, Peter F. Miller
Hiding In Plain Sight: Mediation, Client-Centered Practice, And The Value Of Human Agency, Robert A. Baruch Bush, Peter F. Miller
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Students and practitioners of transformative mediation still underemphasize the importance of client “empowerment” – the opportunity for clients to recapture the sense of agency that conflict has compromised. That is, those learning the skills of a client-centered process like transformative mediation tend to overlook and ignore the achievement of client empowerment, compared to other goals. Why does the achievement of client empowerment go unseen in this way, even when its value has been explained and emphasized in written work, training, and otherwise? Addressing this “invisibility” of client empowerment is a major challenge for those who ascribe importance to the impact …

Discovering The Key To Academic Success For Black Students: The Process By Which Black Students Are Academically Successful, Infini P. Jemison-Ewing
Interdisciplinary Leadership Dissertations
The racial academic achievement gap in America’s public schools persists although there is solid research explaining the elements that have led to and support it. Much of this research is deficit-based and highlights the vulnerabilities of those who fall at the bottom of that gap. Not enough research is invested in celebrating, highlighting, or exploring the experiences of the Black students who experience a reality of performing near or at the top of the gap. The research presented here was designed to provide a strengths-based view of a marginalized portion of America’s public-school students. The goal of this study is …
Effects Of Urbanization On The Avian Community Of Oak Woodlands, Axel Rutter
Effects Of Urbanization On The Avian Community Of Oak Woodlands, Axel Rutter
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Continued human population growth leads to further expansion of high-density population centers and agricultural land necessary to sustain them. With this urban expansion comes a myriad of effects on both native habitat and wildlife. In birds, these effects can have a variety of negative impacts on behavior and physical health. Habitat degradation, largely through various forms of pollution, leads to impaired immune responses, increased stress levels, altered behavior, and much more. The wide range of effects impacting wild birds and their habitat can also alter the structure of local communities. Only species that can survive on or adapt to the …

The assembly of single-amplified genomes (SAGs) and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) has led to a surge in genome-based discoveries of members affiliated with Archaea and Bacteria, bringing with it a need to develop guidelines for nomenclature of uncultivated microorganisms. The International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP) only recognizes cultures as ‘type material’, thereby preventing the naming of uncultivated organisms. In this Consensus Statement, we propose two potential paths to solve this nomenclatural conundrum. One option is the adoption of previously proposed modifications to the ICNP to recognize DNA sequences as acceptable type material; the other option creates a nomenclatural code …

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Experiences Of Students With Parents As Their Principal, Teacher, Or Coach, Lori Lynn Brownlee-Brewton
Doctor of Education Dissertations
Many people assume that educators’ children have an easy life in school, since many people at the school level and in the community traditionally hold educators in high esteem. Rarely does anyone explore the added pressure put on this selected class of students to perform for teachers, classmates, and the parent-educator, especially when all are in the same school. Perceptions of belonging have been determined to have important effects on adolescent development, influencing both social and academic outcomes (Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Walton & Cohen, 2007). Educators’ children are often uncomfortable with everyone knowing who their parent is. Students whose …

The present study sought to investigate whether organ transplant recipients utilize certain strength-based attributes—gratitude, resilience, and post-traumatic growth—when coping with life post-transplant. This mixed-methods study recruited eight (N=8) kidney transplant recipients, who took part in semi-structured interviews followed by a survey. Though quantitative data was limited due to COVID-19 interruptions, the qualitative data revealed evidence of gratitude, resilience, and post-traumatic growth being used by the participants …
Evaluating A Culprit: A Review Of The Biochemical Mechanisms Of Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance, Callie Cinque
Evaluating A Culprit: A Review Of The Biochemical Mechanisms Of Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance, Callie Cinque
Honors Theses
Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance (NCGI) has evaded biological and chemical mechanisms since it was first reported in 1978. Celiac Disease, a multi-system immune mediated disorder has long served as the most similar counterpart to NCGI. Less cases of celiac disease are going undiagnosed reflecting an improvement on sensitive and decisive diagnostic tools. However, NCGI has been significantly growing as a diagnosis over the past decade with little match or similarity to the markers found in celiac disease patients. Critical evaluation of NCGI theories, experimentation, and existing hypotheses is necessary. This review seeks to synthesize multiple disciplines of gluten research and enhance …
Aldol Condensations And Nitrile Aldol Reactions Mediated By Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate, Samuel R. Bottum
Aldol Condensations And Nitrile Aldol Reactions Mediated By Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate, Samuel R. Bottum
Honors Theses
In the presence of excess trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf), ketones and esters undergo aldol addition and dehydration to yield chalcones and cinnamates. This one-pot reaction proceeds through in situ enol silane formation, avoiding the need to pre-form and purify the nucleophile in the Mukaiyama aldol reaction. The stoichiometry of the TMSOTf controls whether the reaction proceeds with simple addition or addition-dehydration. When (trimethylsilyl) acetonitrile is stirred with an aldehyde and TMSOTf, nitrile aldol addition is observed.
How To Be A Good Believer: A Multifaceted Defense Of Christian Belief, Cameron Bonsell
How To Be A Good Believer: A Multifaceted Defense Of Christian Belief, Cameron Bonsell
Honors Theses
In this paper I will argue that holding Christian beliefs is consistent with intellectual virtues. I must first clarify that holding Christian beliefs does not consist only in the affirmation of certain propositions like “God exists”. This is not to say that affirming certain doctrine is not essential to Christian belief, but this is only part of what it encompasses. When I refer to Christianity and Christian beliefs in this paper, I mean affirming basic religious propositions like “Jesus was the son of God”, but I also take certain practices to be part of Christian belief. For example, spiritual disciplines …
