An Open Architecture For Ground Data Systems, Andrew Basin, Mason Starr, Glenn Lightsey
Small Satellite Conference
The Georgia Tech Space Systems Design Laboratory (SSDL) Mission Operations Center (MOC) has historically supported the real-time operations of small satellites but has never simultaneously supported the operation of multiple vehicles. Furthermore, the Ground Data System (GDS) software deployed in the MOC has been rewritten largely from scratch for each new vehicle operated by the SSDL. The SSDL has multiple upcoming launches, including those involving formation flight missions, making the possibility of simultaneously operating multiple vehicles from the MOC increasingly likely. Additionally, the task of rewriting the GDS software for each vehicle is increasingly costly and inefficient. To account for …

Analytical Method To Design And Develop 2-Stage Passive Vibration Isolator For Spacecrafts And Its On-Board Payloads, Yuvraaj Pasumarthy
Small Satellite Conference
Spacecrafts experience significant vibrations primarily during launch and sometimes in orbit, posing challenges to structural integrity and instrument performance. The methods to mitigate these vibrations, (or vibrations) in general primarily fall into two categories: disturbance absorption and source or receiver isolation. Among these two, isolation is preferred as fundamentally this is an additional system that either separates the source of the disturbance or the receiver effected in comparison to absorbers that reduce the magnitude of disturbance. Furthermore, its ability to provide greater control across varying frequency ranges relevant to spacecraft systems, provides the option of developing isolation systems with high …

Automated Pointing Budget And Reaction Wheel Sizing Tool For Cubesat Attitude Control With Iterative Sensitivity Analysis, Logan Thompson, Matthew Devor, Michael Harrigan, Victoria Coverstone
Small Satellite Conference
Reaction wheels are a widely used solution for CubeSat attitude control, offering precise pointing capabilities without the need for a propulsion system. However, sizing reaction wheels correctly is a persistent challenge due to the difficulty of accurately defining the pointing budget, which determines the required torque and momentum storage capacity. Designers must account for mission-specific constraints, spacecraft mass properties, and environmental disturbances, all of which introduce uncertainty into the sizing process. As a result, reaction wheels are often either oversized, leading to unnecessary mass and power consumption, or undersized, risking performance failures such as saturation. To address this challenge, a …

Conceptual Design Of An Integrated Small Satellite Environmental Testing Platform: Addressing Subsystem Integration Challenges, Benjamin Ochs, Michael Harrigan, Victoria Coverstone
Small Satellite Conference
Environmental testing for small satellites often relies on separate systems to simulate space conditions, resulting in inefficiencies, increased operating costs, and challenges in accurately modeling the complex environment. This paper presents the conceptual design of an integrated testing platform that combines thermal, vacuum, solar, magnetic, navigation, and attitude control simulations into a single piece of hardware to provide reliable mission assurance. The design emphasizes the modifications required to overcome unique interactions between subsystems, enabling simultaneous, realistic environmental qualification of small satellites while reducing cost and complexity.
The fully integrated environmental testing system incorporates a thermal vacuum chamber (TVAC) with an …

The Polarization-modUlated Laser Satellite Experiment (PULSE-A) is the University of Chicago’s student-led mission to demonstrate an optical downlink at a data rate of 1 to 10 Mbps using circular polarization shift keying (CPolSK). PULSE-A comprises a 3U CubeSat bus carrying a < 1.5U optical transmission terminal and a dual optical-RF ground station. The ground station (GS) system consists of the optical ground station (OGS) and the RF ground station (RFGS). The RFGS is responsible for standard communications and control tasks, while the experimental OGS receives the optical transmission from the satellite’s payload.
To perform satellite-to-ground optical communications, the OGS needs to track, receive, and decode the transmitted signal while providing its own beacon, which allows the satellite to track the OGS. These requirements are accomplished by four assemblies within the OGS: tracking, polarization state preparation, signal decoding, and beacon. The tracking assembly collects, condenses, and collimates incoming laser light from the …

The undergraduate-led Polarization-modUlated Laser Satellite Experiment (PULSE-A) at the University of Chicago seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of circular polarization shift keyed satellite-to-ground laser communication. Free-space optical communications offer significantly improved data rates and lower power requirements than radio frequency communications for a similar form factor, which makes optical communications of particular interest for future satellite missions as on-orbit data collection rates increase. PULSE-A’s low-cost open-source bus serves as the backbone of the mission and has been designed in tandem with the Payload, with design driven by strict requirements for pointing accuracy, component alignment, power demand, and thermal stability. This …

As small satellite missions grow in complexity, there is increasing demand for greater onboard computational performance. Traditional radiation-hardened processors, while reliable, are expensive, slow, and suffer from long procurement timelines. In contrast, commercial off-the-shelf processors like the Raspberry Pi offer high performance at low cost but are vulnerable to radiation-induced faults such as single-event upsets. SkyForge Core is an experimental computing system that addresses this challenge by integrating three Raspberry Pi Zero W units into a triple modular redundant architecture. The system executes identical tasks on each Pi, compares outputs using majority voting, and identifies discrepancies. If a failure occurs, …

A Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithm was developed for command automation onboard a 3U CubeSat. This effort focused on the implementation of macro Control Action Reinforcement Learning (CARL), a technique in which an onboard agent is provided with compiled information based on live telemetry as its observation. The agent uses this information to produce high-level actions, such as adjusting attitude to solar pointing, which are then translated into control algorithms and executed through lower-level instructions. Once trust in the onboard agent is established, real-time environmental information can be leveraged for faster response times and reduced reliance on ground control. The approach …

Space weather events in the 100–600 km thermosphere-ionosphere and magnetosphere impact satellites, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), aviation, and power grids[1]. Current monitoring can be updated with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution and global coverage to meet World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards, especially where solar activity accelerates orbital decay and radiation risks. This poster proposes addressing this with a hybrid constellation of 24 SmallSats employing advanced edge computing and multi-orbit observation, targeting operational readiness by 2032.
