Female Mentorship: A Study On University Of San Francisco President’S Advisory Committee On The Status Of Women (Pacsw) Mentorship Program, Maria Bluth

Master's Theses

Mentorship is one way to advance gender equity, and it can enhance a women’s career, but finding a mentor can be intimidating, the University of San Francisco President’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (PACSW) Women’s Co-Mentoring Program seeks to increase confidence, community, and capacity amongst women-identified employees at the University of San Francisco. The program aims to accomplish this through the creation of intentional, time-bound one-on-one relationships between University employees based on confidentiality and collegiality (PACSW Mission Statement). The ideal goal of the Co-Mentorship program is to benefit the co-mentors, as well as positively impact the whole University …

Understanding Free-Roaming Horse Conflicts With Wildlife In The Great Basin, S. Nicole Frey, Eric Thacker, Katlyn Uhart Dec 2020

Understanding Free-Roaming Horse Conflicts With Wildlife In The Great Basin, S. Nicole Frey, Eric Thacker, Katlyn Uhart

All Current Publications

Horses and burros were introduced to North America in the 1600s with European missionaries and explorers. Over time, abandoned and released horses and burros formed herds and by the time European-American settlers began to explore North America in the 1700s, these free-roaming horses and burros had adapted to their habitat and been incorporated into Native American culture. By the mid-1900s, most Americans considered these horses as wild and symbols of freedom and beauty.

In 1971, Congress passed the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act (Public Law 73-482) to provide federal protection for free-roaming horses and burros (also known as …

Breaking The Matrix: Transcribing Bartók And Ligeti For The Guitar Using A New Capo System, Katalin Koltai Dec 2020

Breaking The Matrix: Transcribing Bartók And Ligeti For The Guitar Using A New Capo System, Katalin Koltai

Soundboard Scholar

This paper demonstrates new transcriptions for the guitar of four piano pieces from the twentieth century: “The Night’s Music” from Bartók’s suite Out of Doors and Ligeti’s Musica ricercata, nos. 1, 2, and 7. The transcriptions deploy various newly invented single- and double-string magnet capos: I describe their design and, drawing on the work of De Souza, explain how their use transforms the affordances of the fretboard. In combination with scordaturas, the capos can be used to generate a series of radically altered open-string sets. Turning to the transcriptions of Bartók and Ligeti: by observing the pitch centers within …

Timbre-Based Composition For The Guitar: A Non-Guitarist’S Approach To Mapping And Notation, Jason Noble, Steve Cowan Dec 2020

Timbre-Based Composition For The Guitar: A Non-Guitarist’S Approach To Mapping And Notation, Jason Noble, Steve Cowan

Soundboard Scholar

Composing for the guitar can be intimidating for non-guitarists, but their fresh perspectives can uncover new ways of thinking about music for the instrument. This paper discusses timbre-based composition, an approach to writing for guitar that may be more intuitive for non-guitarist composers than traditional polyphonic composition. The rich palette of timbres available on the guitar, including pitched and nonpitched sounds, is conceived as primary compositional material. Issues of notation and mapping are addressed, focusing on three categories of mappings: (i) physical mapping from notational symbols onto physical objects, such as parts of the guitar; (ii) analogical mapping from …

Visualization Of Real-Time Displacement Time History Superimposed With Dynamic Experiments Using Wireless Smart Sensors And Augmented Reality, Marlon Frank Agüero Injante Dec 2020

Visualization Of Real-Time Displacement Time History Superimposed With Dynamic Experiments Using Wireless Smart Sensors And Augmented Reality, Marlon Frank Agüero Injante

Civil Engineering ETDs

Wireless Smart Sensor (WSS) process field data and inform structural field engineers and owners about the infrastructure health, condition, and safety. Engineers acquire the data and investigate changes on displacements under loads to make informed choices and prioritize decisions concerning maintenance, required repairs, and infrastructure replacements. However, reliable data collection and access to displacement information in the field in real-time under loads remains a challenge. The displacement data provided by the WSS in the field undergoes additional processing, and it is seen at a different location, at the decision-making headquarters. If inspectors were able to observe structural displacements in real-time …

Fpga Versus Asic Implementation Of Radix-4 Scalable Montgomery Modular Multiplier., Atef Ibrahim, Hamed El-Simary, Amen Nassar

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Traditional ASIC implementations have the well known draw-back of reduced flexibility compared to software implementations. Since modem security protocols are increasingly defined to be algorithm independent, a high degree of flexibility with respect to the cryptographic algorithms is desirable. A promising solution which combines high flexibility with the speed and physical security of traditional hardware is the implementation of cryptographic algorithms on reconfigurable devices such as FPGA. In this paper we compare - in terms of area and speed-FPGA Implementation of radix-4 scalable Montgomery modular multiplier using encoding technique (15] with ASIC implementation for different word sizes of operands. The …

Nowadays, Twitter has become one of the fastest-growing Online Social Networks (OSNs) for data sharing frameworks and microblogging. It attracts millions of users worldwide where subscribers communicate with each through posts and messages known as "tweets". The open structure and behaviour of Twitter cause it to be vulnerable to attacks from fake accounts and a large number of automated software, known as 'bots'. Bots are regarded to be malicious as they send spam to users of social networks over the internet. Data security and privacy are among the most critical issues of social network users, as the protection and fulfilment …

Public Education In Spanish St. Augustine, Joseph B. Lockey Dec 2020

Public Education In Spanish St. Augustine, Joseph B. Lockey

Florida Historical Quarterly

A school for white children existed in St. Augustine as early as 1606. Whether it continued to function during the rest of this first period of Spanish dominion is a question that cannot now be answered. But if it did survive, it must have come to a close on the cession of the province to the British in 1763; for the change of sovereignty was followed by a general abandonment of the territory by the Spanish inhabitants. When the Spanish came back twenty years later the British in turn departed. With the restoration of sovereignty went the restoration of the …

The Contention Over The Superintendencia Of The Floridas, D. C. Corbitt Dec 2020

The Contention Over The Superintendencia Of The Floridas, D. C. Corbitt

Florida Historical Quarterly

Louisiana was granted the privilege of trading with France for a period of ten years by a royal cedula of January 22, 1782. The importance of this cedula in the history of Louisiana and in the commercial history of the Spanish Empire can scarcely be overestimated. We are interested here, however, in a side issue which it provoked.

Florida University (1883), C. L. Crow Dec 2020

Florida University (1883), C. L. Crow

Florida Historical Quarterly

The most ambitious and most visionary attempt ever made to establish in Florida an institution of higher learning was probably that of the founders, or founder, of Florida University. The plan of organization of the proposed school, altho not successfully carried out, was nevertheless worthy of some respect, for Dr. Kost, its main proponent, had perhaps a vision similar in part to that which afterward inspired Mr. Buckman.

Letters From East Florida, Dorothy Dodd Dec 2020

Letters From East Florida, Dorothy Dodd

Florida Historical Quarterly

Before the outbreak of the Seminole Indian War in 1835 the northern counties of East Florida were increasing in population at a faster rate than Middle and West Florida. Although the country was but sparsely settled there were a number of flourishing plantations, but these were laid waste by the Indians during the next seven years and immigration into that section almost entirely ceased. On the termination of the war in 1842, Congress passed a temporary free homestead act to encourage settlers to come into the section that had been the seat of the war in the hope that settlement …

Some Experiences Of Bishop Young, Edgar Legare Pennington Dec 2020

Some Experiences Of Bishop Young, Edgar Legare Pennington

Florida Historical Quarterly

The entwining network or railroads and inproved highways has practically obliterated all recollection of the handicaps of travel in Florida a few decades ago. It is hard to realize that the journey made in a few hours today required days - even weeks - in the years which followed the War Between the STates. So accustomed are we to thinking of our centres of population as bustling, wide-awake cities that we seldom picture them as isolated and crude communities or wretched little fishing-towns. Yet such conditions prevailed; and the second Episcopal Bishop of FLorida, the Right REverend John Freeman Young, …

The Fortifications At San Marcos De Apalache, Mark F. Boyd Dec 2020

The Fortifications At San Marcos De Apalache, Mark F. Boyd

Florida Historical Quarterly

The region of Apalache and of its bay on the Gulf coast seem to have been ignored by the Spaniards following the departure of De Soto from this vicinity after overwintering here in 1539-40. Certainly we are not aware of its further mention in available records until the arrival of the Christianizing Franciscan fathers in 1633, who probably, as did De Soto, came overland,, but in the latter instance from St. Augustine.

East Florida Seminary - Micanopy, C. L. Crow

Florida Historical Quarterly

For some eight years there existed in Florida, less than thirty miles apart, two schools founded at approximately the same time and bearing similar names: the one, “East Florida State Seminary, located in Ocala and controlled by the State; the other, “East Florida Seminary”, established in Micanopy and, at least nominally, under the care of the Florida Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. This Conference, it may be said in passing, extended at the time from Key West to Albany and from the Atlantic to Apalachicola, thus covering all Middle and East Florida and that part of Georgia lying …

The First American Road In Florida: Papers Relating To The Survey And Construction Of The Pensacola-St. Augustine Highway, Part I, Mark F. Boyd

Florida Historical Quarterly

In these days of paved highways and of swift private transportation, accounts of early efforts to improve communications have a great interest. After American occupation of the territory of Florida, the inaccessibility of the only centers of population to each other soon attracted interest. This resulted in the projection and construction of the old Pensacola-St. Augustine highway, today an abandoned and almost forgotten route across the state, but interesting as the first instance of American road construction in Florida, as well as the fact that the eastern half would appear to follow one of the early Spanish routes from St. …
