Video-Based Iris Feature Extraction And Matching Using Deep Learning, Anisia Jabin
Video-Based Iris Feature Extraction And Matching Using Deep Learning, Anisia Jabin
Theses
This research is initiated to enhance the video-based eye tracker’s performance to detect small eye movements.[1] Chaudhary and Pelz, 2019, created an excellent foundation on their motion tracking of iris features to detect small eye movements[1], where they successfully used the classical handcrafted feature extraction methods like Scale InvariantFeature Transform (SIFT) to match the features on iris image frames. They extracted features from the eye-tracking videos and then used patent [2] an approach of tracking the geometric median of the distribution. This patent [2] excludes outliers, and the velocity is approximated by scaling by the sampling rate. To detect the …

Rhizome Blues: Introducing Document Teratology, Arthur Perret, Olivier Le Deuff, Clément Borel
Rhizome Blues: Introducing Document Teratology, Arthur Perret, Olivier Le Deuff, Clément Borel
Proceedings from the Document Academy
The aim of this paper is to defend a richer theoretical understanding of what we call monsters, and to argue for the development of document teratology, which we see as an important scientific issue for documentology. We start from the premise that the default state of communication is incommunication, and that documentation, developed to counter this, seems to have become overwhelmed from the inside by its own problematic development. We then discuss the opportunity of a document teratology, based on nuanced description of what the word monster means. We describe two strong imperatives, monstration and categorisation, and the tension between …
Embracing Monsters, Laurie J. Bonnici, Brian C. O'Connor
Embracing Monsters, Laurie J. Bonnici, Brian C. O'Connor
Proceedings from the Document Academy
We propose monsters are documents. Monsters show us, make evident to us, teach us. An exploration of five monsters, both popular and unknown, reveals they fit within a standard model of message making; the binary nature of that model separates meaning from message enabling explanation of evolving interpretations of a monster. We examine the coding and decoding of monster documents through a functional ontology lens. We posit that monsters defy protype and thus serve as attempts at documenting the undocumented. Simultaneously monsters present clues to understanding through imagery that spans the unfamiliar and the familiar allowing the recipient to engage …

Books And Imaginary Being(S): The Monstrosity Of Library Classifications, Melissa Adler, Greg Nightingale
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Thomas Jefferson sold his personal library and its classified catalog to the Library of Congress after the original library was burned in the War of 1812. He viewed the act of submitting his collection to the U.S. Congress as a means to inscribe his legacy and political agenda into the intellectual and cultural realm of the nation. Jorge Luis Borges was both a municipal librarian and the Librarian for the National Library of Argentina, as well as a prolific fiction and poetry writer. Borges’s fictions are a kind of catalogue in and of themselves, in which all books, all ideas, …
The Brazilian Neodocumentalist Movement: An Historical Perspective, Gabriela Fernanda Ribeiro Rodrigues
The Brazilian Neodocumentalist Movement: An Historical Perspective, Gabriela Fernanda Ribeiro Rodrigues
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This article presents early studies on the repercussion of the neo-documentation movement in Brazilian Information Science, through a literary review on the history and evolution of Documentation in Brazil. Some currently approached questions by Brazilian researchers are presented here, with regard to the document and documentation under the neo-documentation perspective. Based on the work of these Brazilian researchers, by means of reconstituting the theoretical steps in the construction of these researches, it is traced to the pathways that indicate an original Brazilian Information Science neo-documentation movement. It is recommended that the subject be widely explored in the future, for being …

Documentary Ghosts, Tim Gorichanaz
Documentary Ghosts, Tim Gorichanaz
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper explores how they documents provide evidence, particularly in anomalous cases, where the evidence is specious. I suggest that it is fruitful to consider such cases with the metaphor of ghosts, as ghosts suggest a breakdown in our everyday understandings of the link between life and death. I describe three types of ghosts and consequently three types of documentary ghosts. Documentary Ghost 1 is a document whose object no longer exists; Documentary Ghost 2 is a document that seems to evince one object, but upon scrutiny it evinces something else; and Documentary Ghost 3 is a document that seems …

The global road network spans 16.3 million km [1], of which 5 million km is in the EU. These road networks fulfil major economic and social goals by facilitating the movement of goods and people throughout the EU, and are therefore of the utmost importance to the economic and social life of the EU [2]. National governments invest heavily in their road networks, e.g., in 2014, EUR 53.33 billion was invested in the development and maintenance of the EU road network [3]. Each year, the world produces 1.6 trillion tonnes of asphalt [4], of which 218 million tonnes is produced …

Peristaltic Flow In The Glymphatic System., Francesco Romanò, Vinod Suresh, Peter Galie, James B Grotberg
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
The flow inside the perivascular space (PVS) is modeled using a first-principles approach in order to investigate how the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) enters the brain through a permeable layer of glial cells. Lubrication theory is employed to deal with the flow in the thin annular gap of the perivascular space between an impermeable artery and the brain tissue. The artery has an imposed peristaltic deformation and the deformable brain tissue is modeled by means of an elastic Hooke's law. The perivascular flow model is solved numerically, discovering that the peristaltic wave induces a steady streaming to/from the brain which strongly …

Semiotic Aggregation In Deep Learning, Bogdan Muşat, Răzvan Andonie
Semiotic Aggregation In Deep Learning, Bogdan Muşat, Răzvan Andonie
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Convolutional neural networks utilize a hierarchy of neural network layers. The statistical aspects of information concentration in successive layers can bring an insight into the feature abstraction process. We analyze the saliency maps of these layers from the perspective of semiotics, also known as the study of signs and sign-using behavior. In computational semiotics, this aggregation operation (known as superization) is accompanied by a decrease of spatial entropy: signs are aggregated into supersign. Using spatial entropy, we compute the information content of the saliency maps and study the superization processes which take place between successive layers of the network. In …

This project aims at identifying the needs and requests of students for Open Educational Resources (OERs) in order to develop rubrics for design, evaluation but also revisions of OERs. For this purpose literature searches on the matter were conducted to determine if information on students’ perspective on OER content and expectations existed. Simultaneously, feedback from fellow City Tech students with experience using OERs has been collected. Our results provide insight on how City Tech students perceive OERs, in comparison with traditional resources. This also pinpoints the key pedagogical features that OERs should offer in order to attract, engage and better …
The Effects Of Glycosylation On Immunogenicity And Replication Of Emerging Viral Pathogens, Elizabeth Carvosso Clarke
The Effects Of Glycosylation On Immunogenicity And Replication Of Emerging Viral Pathogens, Elizabeth Carvosso Clarke
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
For filoviruses, a family of hemorrhagic fever viruses, the main antigen for vaccines in development is the glycosylated glycoprotein GP1,2. How the glycosylation of GP1,2 differs when the protein is produced in different cell lines is unclear. We showed significant differences in the types of glycans conferred onto filovirus GP1,2s in produced in mammalian-origin and insect-origin cell lines. Mammalian-derived filovirus GP1,2s have diverse N-linked glycans and extensive O-linked glycans, whereas insect-derived filovirus GP1,2s have N-linked glycans that are primarily paucimannose type and have no observable O-linked glycans. We then showed that differences in glycosylation impacted how immunogenic the proteins were …
Spectral Properties Of A Non-Compact Operator In Ecology, Matthew Reichenbach
Spectral Properties Of A Non-Compact Operator In Ecology, Matthew Reichenbach
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Ecologists have used integral projection models (IPMs) to study fish and other animals which continue to grow throughout their lives. Such animals cannot shrink, since they have bony skeletons; a mathematical consequence of this is that the kernel of the integral projection operator T is unbounded, and the operator is not compact. A priori, it is unclear whether these IPMs have an asymptotic growth rate λ, or a stable-stage distribution ψ. In the case of a compact operator, these quantities are its spectral radius and the associated eigenvector, respectively. Under biologically reasonable assumptions, we prove that the non-compact operators in …
