Defective rhythmic metabolism is associated with high-fat high-caloric diet (HFD) feeding, ageing and obesity; however, the neural basis underlying HFD effects on diurnal metabolism remains elusive. Here we show that deletion of BMAL1, a core clock gene, in paraventricular hypothalamic (PVH) neurons reduces diurnal rhythmicity in metabolism, causes obesity and diminishes PVH neuron activation in response to fast-refeeding. Animal models mimicking deficiency in PVH neuron responsiveness, achieved through clamping PVH neuron activity at high or low levels, both show obesity and reduced diurnal rhythmicity in metabolism. Interestingly, the PVH exhibits BMAL1-controlled rhythmic expression of GABA-A receptor γ2 subunit, and dampening …
On-Farm Research And Student Engagement To Assess And Promote The Use Of Organic Amendments To Improve Agricultural Soil Health And Resilience Of Crop Production Systems In Nebraska, Agustin Jose Olivo
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In nearly every production environment, there are opportunities to capture profits if waste streams can be further processed or enhanced to create “value added” products. On-farm research studies were initiated in 2019 at four locations across Nebraska to assess the impacts of livestock manure, cedar mulch from forestry management and coal char from sugar beet processing, on agricultural cropland. Study treatments included beef cattle manure (CM), beef cattle slurry (CS), coal char (CC), woody biomass (WB) CM+WB, CS+WB, CM+CC and control (CON; no organic amendment). Soil properties and corn yield were evaluated after a single growing season. Results indicate that …

What was deprived of food and drink it was harmful to a person's health or himself. In this research, the researcher deals with the prohibitions of food and drink in the Holy Quran, as it explains how the ban of these beverages had a definite impact on the Islamic nation in the best conditions of physical and psychological health. This research will solve according to the inductive and descriptive approach, whereby the researcher will extrapolate the Quranic text and determine the prohibitions of foods and beverages in it, whether they are specific or outlined in the Quranic texts such as …

Placing Elsewhere: Approaches For Physical And Digital Flânerie, Ying-Lan Dann, Liz Lambrou
Interiority
This paper will discuss approaches and tools for physical and digital flânerie that emerged within an RMIT second- and third-year Interior Design Studio, during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the third week of classes in March 2020, social distancing measures in Australia led us to transpose urban site-based student projects online. Though unforeseen, this was taken as an opportunity for the interior design studio to explicate modes of physical and digital flânerie, via meandering and looking. We discuss teaching and learning experiences within the digital classroom, which we discovered was a dynamic chat-scape of hyperlinks, fragments, displacements and delays. We …
Age And Growth Of Predatory Mesopelagic Fishes In A Low-Latitude Oceanic Ecosystem, Natalie Slayden
Age And Growth Of Predatory Mesopelagic Fishes In A Low-Latitude Oceanic Ecosystem, Natalie Slayden
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Mesopelagic and bathypelagic fishes provide important global ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration via the biological pump and provision of food for economically important (billfishes and tuna) and federally protected (cetaceans and seabirds) species. These attributes are becoming increasingly recognized, while simultaneously mesopelagic fisheries are becoming of interest for direct harvest as coastal fisheries have become overexploited. Additionally, climate change, ocean acidification, and seabed mining threaten deep-sea fishes. With increasing interest in deep-sea fisheries and anthropogenic threats, age and growth information on these fishes is necessary for management and conservation. Currently ecosystem models lack data such as sexual maturity and …
Formal Language Constraints In Deep Reinforcement Learning For Self-Driving Vehicles, Tyler Bienhoff
Formal Language Constraints In Deep Reinforcement Learning For Self-Driving Vehicles, Tyler Bienhoff
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In recent years, self-driving vehicles have become a holy grail technology that, once fully developed, could radically change the daily behaviors of people and enhance safety. The complexities of controlling a car in a constantly changing environment are too immense to directly program how the vehicle should behave in each specific scenario. Thus, a common technique when developing autonomous vehicles is to use reinforcement learning, where vehicles can be trained in simulated and real-world environments to make proper decisions in a wide variety of scenarios. Reinforcement learning models, however, have uncertainties in how the vehicle acts, especially in a previously …

A Rhetorical Analysis Through American Indian/Indigenous Tribal Leadership: The Rhetorics Of Four North American Tribal Leaders, Loyola Bird
English Language and Literature ETDs
I establish that there are American Indian rhetoric(s) still in place today, evidenced by the four tribal North American leaders that I interviewed. This dissertation project’s main focus was to examine their rhetorical practices and strategies, situated within tribally local, national and global political contexts. Tribal leaders are responsible for the management and leadership of American Indian/Indigenous nations throughout North America. Therefore, they must continue to create, utilize, and develop rhetorical strategies that enhance the art of persuasion for two different audiences (native and nonnative) for diverse reasons. The rhetorical settings may have changed slightly from when Sarah Winnemucca, Paiute, …

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) agonists such as dioxin have been associated with obesity and the development of diabetes. Whole-body Ahr knockout mice on high-fat diet (HFD) have been shown to resist obesity and hepatic steatosis. Tissue-specific knockout of Ahr in mature adipocytes via adiponectin-Cre exacerbates obesity while knockout in liver increases steatosis without having significant effects on obesity. Our previous studies demonstrated that treatment of subcutaneous preadipocytes with exogenous or endogenous AHR agonists disrupts maturation into functional adipocytes in vitro. Here, we used platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (Pdgfrα)-Cre mice, a Cre model previously established to knock out genes in …

COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is a fast emerging disease with deadly consequences. The pulmonary system and lungs in particular are most prone to damage caused by the SARS-CoV-2 infection, which leaves a destructive footprint in the lung tissue, making it incapable of conducting its respiratory functions and resulting in severe acute respiratory disease and loss of life. There were no drug treatments or vaccines approved for SARS-CoV-2 at the onset of pandemic, necessitating an urgent need to develop effective therapeutics. To this end, the innate RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism can be employed to develop front line therapies against …
Consider The Agent In The Arthropod, Nicolas Delon, Peter Cook, Gordon Bauer, Heidi Harley
Consider The Agent In The Arthropod, Nicolas Delon, Peter Cook, Gordon Bauer, Heidi Harley
Animal Sentience
Whether or not arthropods are sentient, they can have moral standing. Appeals to sentience are not necessary and retard progress in human treatment of other species, including invertebrates. Other increasingly well-documented aspects of invertebrate minds are pertinent to their welfare. Even if arthropods are not sentient, they can be agents whose goals—and therefore interests—can be frustrated. This kind of agency is sufficient for moral status and requires that we consider their welfare.

In study 1, participants were placed in groups after taking the Beck’s Depression Inventory. After they were placed in groups, they also took Beck’s Anxiety Inventory and the Life Satisfaction Scale. For four weeks, participants were asked to take pictures of what makes them happy and share and discuss them with their groups. After four weeks, they took all three inventories a second time. We found significant results between the pretest and posttest scores of the depression and anxiety inventories; …
Tasing The Constitution: Conducted Electrical Weapons, Other Forceful Arrest Means, And The Validity Of Subsequent Constitutional Rights Waivers, Andreas Kuersten
Tasing The Constitution: Conducted Electrical Weapons, Other Forceful Arrest Means, And The Validity Of Subsequent Constitutional Rights Waivers, Andreas Kuersten
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Conducted electrical weapons (CEWs)—the most famous and widely used of which are offered under the TASER brand—are ubiquitous tools of law enforcement, carried by the vast majority of law enforcement officers and routinely deployed. These devices subdue targets by coursing electric current through their bodies, thereby causing individuals to collapse as their muscles involuntarily contract. Yet this method of operation has raised concerns—voiced by researchers, advocates, and criminal defendants alike—that CEWs influence cognitive capacity in addition to muscle function as electric current potentially transits through the brain via the central nervous system. In the context of an arrest, this implicates …

The Acquisition Of English Relative Clauses By University Students Of English In Jordan, Alaa Al-Maani, Lutfi Abu Al-Haija
Jordanian Educational Journal
This study investigated the acquisition of English relative clauses by Jordanian EFL learners. It also examined whether the Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy (NPAH) for the acquisition of relative clauses proposed by Keenan and Comrie (1977) is applicable to Jordanian EFL learners. Moreover, the study investigated whether there is a relationship between participants' production of relative clauses and their proficiency level. Sixty undergraduate students of English completed a sentence combination task. In general, the results indicated that Jordanian EFL learners are good at producing relative clauses. However, their performance was influenced by their proficiency level whereby advanced learners outperformed intermediate learners. …

Poetry is a life translator, the pulse of the heart, reflections of reality, selfrevealing detector, and detecting thoughts through it. Through its words, animated pictures with their colors, is drawn patterns and inventions. Poetry displays the scenes of life as it senses in front of the recipients, sneaks into their intents and steal their hearts. The Palestinian poet of expatriation (Mahmoud Mufleh) was able to stimulate the sentiments, to give brightness to the darkness, and to take his recipient into reality, portraying the struggle of his people, his sacrifice, his belonging, his adherence and his unity, where the lens of …

His And Hers: Gender-Specific Design In Mid-Twentieth Century North America Through Film And Television, Morgan O'Shaughnessy
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
The built environment exists as a variety of ‘spaces’ which are constructed by, and for, the people who occupy them. What is the relationship between social constructs of gender and our built environment in the 20th century? How does film and television representing the mid-20th century exemplify this relationship? The overall theme of this topic will include a positive relationship between social gender constructs and our built environment. Through the exploration of select film and television, this study attempts to answer the question of how gender-focused design reinforces traditional gender roles in North American society in mid-20th …
