Pesticide Occurrence And Persistence Entering Recreational Lakes Residing In Watersheds Of Various Land Uses, Jessica Satiroff Jul 2020

Pesticide Occurrence And Persistence Entering Recreational Lakes Residing In Watersheds Of Various Land Uses, Jessica Satiroff

Department of Environmental Engineering: Theses and Other Student Research

Common Use Pesticides (CUPs) are important for agricultural producers to sustain food production. As a result, regions with high rates of agricultural production, such as the Midwest, often have ubiquitous occurrences of pesticides in surface and groundwater 1. Once pesticides are introduced into an ecosystem, pesticides have the potential for creating unwanted effects on non-target species and downstream environments 2,3. However, pesticides do not come strictly from agricultural practices. Therefore, the research presented in this thesis focuses on the neonicotinoid and fungicide concentrations detected in recreational lakes as well as their persistence in these aquatic environments during the …

Birth Control Behind Bars: An Anthropological Perspective On The Care Of Captive Bonobos, Tylyn A. Recore-Dagsaan Jul 2020

Birth Control Behind Bars: An Anthropological Perspective On The Care Of Captive Bonobos, Tylyn A. Recore-Dagsaan

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

Bonobos are one of our closest living primate relatives. They are primarily known for their unique social structure and sexual behavior. In their native setting, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, bonobos are often seen engaging in sexual behaviors not only for reproduction, but for social reasons too. Unfortunately, research in the wild is difficult because of political unrest and rapidly declining population numbers. Since bonobos are endangered, it is crucial that we maintain and properly care for a captive population to ensure the survival of the species. A captive setting provides a safe, controlled environment for researchers to observe …

Superdiffusive Fractional Brownian Motion Memory Of Annual Mean Global Temperature Anomaly, Karl Patrick Casas, Allan Roy Elnar, Gibson Maglasang

CNU Journal of Higher Education

The NASA’s GISTEMP Team temperature anomaly data from year 1880-2015 has undergone two different data treatments: 5-year moving average and second-generation data. Together with the untreated data, the log-log plot of mean square displacement (MSD) of temperature anomaly versus time was derived. Since it showed a linear response, fractional Brownian motion (fBM), which was derived using white noise analysis was shown. The fBM with Hurst exponent, H = 1 was then used as a fit to the MSD of temperature anomaly which implied super-diffusion. It must be pointed out that the upper bound of the H index is the condition …

Engineered Extracellular Vesicles Loaded With Mir-124 Attenuate Cocaine-Mediated Activation Of Microglia, Ernest T. Chivero, Ke Liao, Fang Niu, Ashutosh Tripathi, Changhai Tian, Shilpa Buch, Guoku Hu

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

MicroRNA-124 (miR-124), a brain-enriched microRNA, is known to regulate microglial quiescence. Psychostimulants such as cocaine have been shown to activate microglia by downregulating miR-124, leading, in turn, to neuroinflammation. We thus rationalized that restoring the levels of miR-124 could function as a potential therapeutic approach for cocaine-mediated neuroinflammation. Delivering miRNA based drugs in the brain that are effective and less invasive, however, remains a major challenge in the field. Herein we engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) and loaded them with miR-124 for delivery in the brain. Approach involved co-transfection of mouse dendritic cells with Dicer siRNA and RVG-Lamp2b plasmid to deplete …

Rights And Representation: Media Narratives About Disabled People And Their Service Animals In Canadian Print News, Lana Kerzner, Chelsea Temple Jones, Beth Haller, Arthur Blaser

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

Canadian news coverage is reflecting and shaping an evolution of thought about how we must publicly account for animals’ roles in the disability rights movement. Through a textual analysis of 26 news media articles published between 2012 and 2017, this research demonstrates that the media play a key role in reporting on discrimination, yet media narratives about service animals and their owners too often fail to capture the complexity of policies and laws that govern their lives. In Canada, there is widespread public confusion about the rights of disabled people and their service animals. This incertitude is relevant to both …

Age-Suitability Prediction For Literature Using Deep Neural Networks, Eric Robert Brewer

Theses and Dissertations

Digital media holds a strong presence in society today. Providers of digital media may choose to obtain a content rating for a given media item by submitting that item to a content rating authority. That authority will then issue a content rating that denotes to which age groups that media item is appropriate. Content rating authorities serve publishers in many countries for different forms of media such as television, music, video games, and mobile applications. Content ratings allow consumers to quickly determine whether or not a given media item is suitable to their age or preference. Literature, on the other …
