Misuse Of Prescription Stimulants And Their Effect On Cognition, Zachary Friederichs
Misuse Of Prescription Stimulants And Their Effect On Cognition, Zachary Friederichs
Theses and Graduate Projects
Prescription stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin are increasingly being diverted and misused by college students who fail to recognize the potential health risks in an effort to improve academic performance. The main aim of this literature review is to address the prevalence of their misuse, the effects they have on cognition, and adverse side effects that are typically associated with their use. Despite being frequently referred to as "cognitive enhancers" or "smart pills," results from studies on these medications remain mixed/unclear as to whether cognitive domains such as memory, executive function, and processing speed are actually enhanced. However, not surprisingly, …

Neurological Symptoms Due To Coronavirus Disease 2019, Farage Ftiha, Moshe Shalom, Henry Jradeh
Publications and Research
In this review, we focus on summarizing everything that is known about the neurological effects of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2). It has been shown that Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) may result in neuromuscular disorders or damage to nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord, which may lead to weakness, numbness, and pain. Published literature has stated that SARS-COV-1 may infect the central nervous system and due to its similarities to SARS-COV-2, we suspect that SARS-COV-2 has the same potential. We conclude that Covid-19 has neurological manifestations. Further research should be done in this field to understand …

A Qualitative Study Of The Preparedness Of Novice Teachers To Teach Effectively In A Blended Learning Environment, Rachelle R. Lafave
A Qualitative Study Of The Preparedness Of Novice Teachers To Teach Effectively In A Blended Learning Environment, Rachelle R. Lafave
Dissertations
Proponents of the effective use of blended learning argue that without technologyenhanced instruction, students graduate from high school missing the digital skills they need to be successful competitors in the labor market (Dickinson, 2018). Yet, authors of supporting work have established technology-enhanced instruction can have a negative effect on student achievement (Newman & Dickinson, 2017). Examined in this qualitative study was the preparedness of novice teachers to provide effective instruction in a blended learning environment, as researchers have found teacher self-efficacy is the number one predictor of instructional quality (Belanger, 2018; Conant, 2016; Künsting, Neuber, & Lipowsky, 2016). Self-efficacy is, …

Recognition of DNA viruses, such as cytomegaloviruses (CMVs), through pattern-recognition receptor (PRR) pathways involving MyD88 or STING constitute a first-line defense against infections mainly through production of type I interferon (IFN-I). However, the role of these pathways in different tissues is incompletely understood, an issue particularly relevant to the CMVs which have broad tissue tropisms. Herein, we contrasted anti-viral effects of MyD88 versus STING in distinct cell types that are infected with murine CMV (MCMV). Bone marrow chimeras revealed STING-mediated MCMV control in hematological cells, similar to MyD88. However, unlike MyD88, STING also contributed to viral control in non-hematological, stromal …

Supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) is a narrowing of the aorta caused by elastin (ELN) haploinsufficiency. SVAS severity varies among patients with Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a rare disorder that removes one copy of ELN and 25-27 other genes. Twenty percent of children with WBS require one or more invasive and often risky procedures to correct the defect while 30% have no appreciable stenosis, despite sharing the same basic genetic lesion. There is no known medical therapy. Consequently, identifying genes that modify SVAS offers the potential for novel modifier-based therapeutics. To improve statistical power in our rare-disease cohort (N = 104 exomes), …
Estimating A Fair Value For Standing Forage, Jay Parsons, Daren Redfearn, Mary E. Drewnoski
Estimating A Fair Value For Standing Forage, Jay Parsons, Daren Redfearn, Mary E. Drewnoski
Cornhusker Economics
Several things need to be considered when deciding what value to place on standing forage. Forage prices reflect current inventories, demand, expected current season production and associated yield risk, and quality characteristics. Standing forage can be harvested in a number of different ways which need to be considered when pricing it. Below, we provide a few general thoughts and questions concerning harvesting method and comparable feed value to consider when pricing standing forage. We follow with a few examples illustrating pricing calculations for forage mechanically harvested as hay, haylage, and silage. We close with pricing considerations for forage harvested by …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Bat Activity In A Southeast Nebraska Agricultural Landscape, Christopher Fill
Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Bat Activity In A Southeast Nebraska Agricultural Landscape, Christopher Fill
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Intensive agriculture is associated with biodiversity loss and species decline. Yet wild species, such as bats, may provide critical ecosystem services to agriculture, even in transformed landscapes. In the United States, bats have been estimated to save the agricultural industry billions of dollars per year. However, white-nose syndrome and habitat loss have led to the decline of many bat species in North America, including the federally threatened northern long-eared bat, Myotis septentrionalis.
To better evaluate the effectiveness of these pest-controlling services, and to increase understanding of bat foraging behavior in these extreme landscapes, I deployed 11 grids of 24 detectors, …

Making Meaning In The Classroom: Developing An Oer For Equitable Teaching, Brenton Jackson
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The cultural aspects of teacher-child interactions are emerging as key factors in K-6 learning, especially as the diversity of US classroom increases year to year. While there is growing evidence that culturally-connected classroom interactions can enrich development and improve classroom experience, finding accessible ways to teach, measure and improve those cultural aspects of teaching has been challenging, especially because of cost and access barriers.
The purpose of this project was to turn an existing cultural teaching observation protocol (the Classroom Assessment of Sociocultural Interactions, or CASI) into an instructional experience that would be accessible to all teachers. A team of …

Synthesizing Expressive Behaviors For Humanoid Robots, Mathias Irwan Sunardi
Synthesizing Expressive Behaviors For Humanoid Robots, Mathias Irwan Sunardi
Dissertations and Theses
Humanoid robots are expected to be able to communicate with expressive gestures at the same level of proficiency as humans. However, creating expressive gestures for humanoid robots is difficult and time consuming due to the high number of degrees of freedom (DOF) and the iterations needed to get the desired expressiveness.
Current robot motion editing software has varying levels of sophistication of motion editing tools ranging from basic ones that are text-only, to ones that provide graphical user interfaces (GUIs) which incorporate advanced features, such as curve editors and inverse kinematics. These tools enable users to create simple motions; but …

Piecing Together The Puzzle Of Pictorial Representation: How Jigsaw Puzzles Index Metacognitive Development, Mj Doherty, M Wimmer, C Golleck, E Robinson, C Stone
School of Psychology
Jigsaw puzzles are ubiquitous developmental toys in Western societies, used here to examine the development of metarepresentation. For jigsaw puzzles this entails understanding that individual pieces, when assembled, produce a picture. In Experiment 1, 3- to 5-year-olds (N = 117) completed jigsaw puzzles that were normal, had no picture, or comprised noninterlocking rectangular pieces. Pictorial puzzle completion was associated with mental and graphical metarepresentational task performance. Guide pictures of completed pictorial puzzles were not useful. In Experiment 2, 3- to 4-year-olds (N = 52) completed a simplified task, to choose the correct final piece. Guide-use associated with age and specifically …
Energy Stores And Life-History Transitions In Red-Sided Garter Snakes (Thamnophis Sirtalis Parietalis), Rachel Catharine Wilson
Energy Stores And Life-History Transitions In Red-Sided Garter Snakes (Thamnophis Sirtalis Parietalis), Rachel Catharine Wilson
Dissertations and Theses
All organisms must prioritize investment in either reproductive or self-maintenance activities. Despite this established paradigm, our understanding of how organisms choose to prioritize certain behaviors and physiologies over others remains limited. It is likely that an organism's energy status not only influences variation in reproductive effort, but also transitions to and from reproductive activities. My dissertation aims to investigate how energy metrics (body condition index, adipocyte follicle size, and liver glycogen) relate to reproduction and associated life-history stages in red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis). Chapter two examines if energy metrics differ with migratory status and sex in …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Enteric fever remains a major cause of morbidity in developing countries with poor sanitation conditions that enable fecal contamination of water distribution systems. Historical evidence has shown that contamination of water systems used for household consumption or agriculture are key transmission routes for Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi A. The World Health Organization now recommends that typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCV) be used in settings with high typhoid incidence; consequently, governments face a challenge regarding how to prioritize typhoid against other emerging diseases. A key issue is the lack of typhoid burden data in many low- and middle-income countries where TCV …
The Experience Of Female Caregivers In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Nouf Albugami
The Experience Of Female Caregivers In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Nouf Albugami
Dissertations and Theses
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ("KSA"), a minimal amount of research concerning the availability and level of social support specifically targeting the female caregiver has been conducted. Moreover, the extent to which social support has helped alleviate both the physical and psychological stress of caregiving has been studied very little, if at all. In light of this limited amount of research, the goals of this study are to investigate the following two questions: (1) What is the experience of female caregivers with chronically ill children in KSA, and (2) What is the nature and availability of social support among …

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Impact Of Forest Management Practices On Microhabitat Abiotic Variables In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Jasmine Williamson, Allison Bailey, Jacob Lougee, David Patterson, Jessica Patterson
Georgia Journal of Science
Existing research has demonstrated that forest management practices (e.g., clear-cutting, planting) can dramatically impact animal communities. This is particularly the case with amphibian populations due to their sensitivity to microhabitat alterations. However, few studies have investigated the manner by which forest management practices impact the abiotic variables most relevant to healthy amphibian populations. In this study we investigated how spatially localized forest management practices (i.e., at the scale of hundreds of meters) alter the microhabitat variables that have been shown important to amphibian population distributions. We assessed the relationship between forest composition and microhabitat abiotic variables across three localities with …

Molar Protraction Through Downward Extension Of Maxillary Sinus In Patient With Central Diastema Caused By Small Lateral Incisors, Hsien-Fang Hung, Ming-Chu Huang, Ming-Jeaun Su
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
A 32-year-old male patient presented with upper central diastema resulting from upper bilateral smallsized lateral incisors. The patient also had a deep bite of dental origin. A relatively simple mechanotherapy with pre-adjusted edgewise appliances was applied. A favorable and stable result of the ideal overbite and overjet after the correction of central diastema. Besides the above primary complaints, the prolonged retained roots of upper left first molar caused difficulty for proper space closure since the maxillary sinus wall was downward extended. The lower sinus floor may impede the orthodontic movement, but was very likely to be overlooked. The upper left …
The Shape Of Metabolism: Mitochondrial Dynamics, Remodeling, And Bioenergetic Reprogramming In Disease, Carl Decker
The Shape Of Metabolism: Mitochondrial Dynamics, Remodeling, And Bioenergetic Reprogramming In Disease, Carl Decker
KGI Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondria are dynamic, double-membrane bound hubs of bioenergetics, cell signaling, and redox balance that exist as an oscillating network of fused superstructures and smaller, single organelles. Importantly, their position at the junction of catabolic and anabolic metabolism connects these morphological fluctuations to larger cellular metabolic programs, which in turn have implicated mitochondrial dynamics in a number of disease states and a varied set of cell phenomena. For example, differentiation of memory t-cells is dependent on mitochondrial network morphology, and in particular on remodeling dynamics that yield fused mitochondrial assemblies favoring oxidative phosphorylation-driven metabolism. In contrast, many cancers have been shown …

Mutations in PTPN11, which encodes the protein tyrosine phosphatase SHP2, contribute to ∼35% of cases of juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML). A common clinical picture in children with JMML is that it presents as a constitutive hyperinflammatory syndrome, partially reminiscent of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia in adults. Thus, a component of JMML is associated with a hyperinflammatory state and abundant innate immune cells such as neutrophils and monocytes. Recently, we showed that the evolutionarily conserved mouse lncRNA Morrbid is specifically expressed in myeloid cells and uniquely represses the expression of the proapoptotic gene Bim to regulate the lifespan of myeloid cells. However, …

During endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD), the cytoplasmic enzyme N-glycanase 1 (NGLY1) is proposed to remove N-glycans from misfolded N-glycoproteins after their retrotranslocation from the ER to the cytosol. We previously reported that NGLY1 regulates Drosophila BMP signaling in a tissue-specific manner (Galeone et al., 2017). Here, we establish the Drosophila Dpp and its mouse ortholog BMP4 as biologically relevant targets of NGLY1 and find, unexpectedly, that NGLY1-mediated deglycosylation of misfolded BMP4 is required for its retrotranslocation. Accumulation of misfolded BMP4 in the ER results in ER stress and prompts the ER recruitment of NGLY1. The ER-associated NGLY1 …

Neuroblastoma is a common cancer in children, affected by a number of genes that interact with each other through intricate but coordinated networks. Traditional approaches can only reconstruct a single regulatory network that is topologically not informative enough to explain the complexity of neuroblastoma risk. We implemented and modified an advanced model for recovering informative, omnidirectional, dynamic, and personalized networks (idopNetworks) from static gene expression data for neuroblastoma risk. We analyzed 3439 immune genes of neuroblastoma for 217 high-risk patients and 30 low-risk patients by which to reconstruct large patient-specific idopNetworks. By converting these networks into risk-specific representations, we found …

"Not 'Just' A Barista": The Story Of Portland's College-Educated Baristas, Ned William Tilbrook
Dissertations and Theses
This paper examines graduate jobs/skills mismatch in craft occupations, through semi-structured interviews with college-educated baristas working in local and craft coffee shops in Portland, Oregon. This paper asks why college educated people work in such a role as it represents an interesting example of job/skills mismatch. Findings suggest that some see it as a good stop-gap on the way to something else, while others hope to use the skills they learned in studying for their degree to forge a career in the coffee industry. A desire to use these degree-relevant skills is prevalent throughout the sample, however many are still …

In the latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on antimicrobial resistance, this problem remains to be an urgent global threat, infecting about three million people and killing about 36,000 people in the United States annually. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) offer a number of advantages over small molecule antibiotics, such as their structural flexibility in response to different local environments, allowing for having environment-responsive modes of action. In this dissertation, we will focus on Clavanin A (ClavA), an AMP that was identified and can be extracted from the tunicate Styela clava. Experimentally, it was shown that …

Physical pain limits the quality of life for more than 20% of the adult population around the world. Joint injury and acute trauma account for a significant portion of this pain. The most common joint injuries include ankle sprains, ACL tears in the knee, Patellofemoral syndrome (injury resulting from the repetitive movement of the patella against the femur), and Tennis Elbow (Epicondylitis). There is strong evidence that suggest these injuries trigger a cascade of events that lead to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). PTOA is a multifactorial disease that affects all aspects of joints, including ligaments, tendons, bones, menisci, and most prominently, …
