Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review
Big life transitions, typically resulting from loss, can cause physical, emotional, and behavioral problems. Using a heuristic methodology, this article answers the question: Given polyvagal theory, how can yoga and depth psychology combine to support clients to make transitions more easily? Polyvagal theory hypothesizes that the vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve, impacts impact many parts of the body related to physical and mental health. Breathing helps the vagus nerve function properly along with self-regulation, homeostasis, and the social engagement system. Yoga and depth psychology recognize the continuous cycles of life that exist in nature, the constancy of change, the …

Exparel Compared To Standard Bupivacaine For Postoperative Analgesia Following Lumbar Spine Fusion, Eric Ka Chun Lau
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Inadequate postoperative pain management following spinal surgery contributes to delayed mobilization and chronic pain. The current standard of care following spinal surgery consists of opiates and anesthetics to target multiple pain pathways. However, opiates are limited by their significant adverse effects and anesthetics are limited by their short duration of delivery. One approach that may overcome these limitations is liposomal or lipid-encapsulated drug formulations, which have been shown to extend the duration of drug delivery to target tissues. In this study, we will compare adjunctive opioid consumption in a randomized controlled trial of patients undergoing elective posterior lumbar spinal surgery …

Randomized Study Of Postpartum Metformin Use To Augment Breastmilk Supply, Meghan Sowers
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Gestational diabetes is defined as impaired glucose tolerance with onset during pregnancy and affects approximately 8.2% of pregnancies. Recently, it has been shown that insulin resistance is a predictor of poor milk supply in women attempting to breastfeed. Some mothers with gestational diabetes who used metformin for optimal glycemic control during pregnancy have found that metformin use has improved their ability to produce milk after delivery; however, the effects of continuing metformin postpartum have not yet been studied. It is theorized that continued metformin use in the postpartum period in women with gestational diabetes may improve postpartum milk production. Using …

Three groups of beetles inhabit cones of cycads (Cycadales) in the northern hemisphere and are believed to be involved in their pollination. The primitive weevil subtribe Allocorynina (Coleoptera: Belidae) is restricted to the New World cycad genera Dioon Lindl. and Zamia L. One group of weevils (Curculionidae), found only in Cycas L., appears to be a relatively recent colonizer of northern hemisphere cycads. Members of the beetle subfamily Pharaxonothinae (Erotylidae) occur in all Asian and New World cycad genera. Phylogenetic trees of these beetles, based on DNA analysis and supported with morphological studies, are compared to patterns of continental drift …

Spatial Ecology And Resource Selection Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Ewes In A Prairie Badlands Population, Erin Wood
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The basic spatial ecology and habitat relationships of female bighorn sheep in Nebraska are poorly understood. Establishing seasonal patterns of space use and resource selection for this population at the margin of their historical and current range addresses a key knowledge gap and provides important baseline information for ongoing conservation efforts in Nebraska. We deployed GPS radio-collars on 56 adult ewes in western Nebraska to quantify seasonal space use, movements, and resource selection of ewes. To investigate spatial ecology, we quantified movements of ewes and the factors that influence home range size, seasonal use, and spatial stability across seasons. Home …

The Categorization Of Ideophone-Gesture Composites In Quichua Narratives, Maria Graciela Cano
Theses and Dissertations
Ideophones are “marked words that vividly depict sensory events” (Dingemanse, 2009, p. 1). They often occur with gesture, but the link between the two is not yet fully understood. McNeill (1992) and Streeck (2008) have proposed classification schemas for gesture, and Nuckolls (2019) is developing a framework for the categorization of ideophones. This thesis categorizes ideophone-gesture composites using a combination of all three of these frameworks. I used data from Quechua RealWords, an online video corpus of 221 ideophones of Pastaza Quichua elicited by students and faculty at the Andes and Amazon Field School in Ecuador. I analyzed video clips …
A Comprehensive Comparison Of Teratogenic Compounds Known To Induce Neural Tube Defects In The Chicken Embryo, Micah Marie Ross
A Comprehensive Comparison Of Teratogenic Compounds Known To Induce Neural Tube Defects In The Chicken Embryo, Micah Marie Ross
Theses and Dissertations
One of the first embryonic structures generated during early human development is the neural tube. The embryonic process of neurulation, including neural tube closure, is necessary for proper brain and spinal cord development, whereas improper closure leads to neural tube defects including anencephaly, spina bifida, and craniorachischisis. The mechanism by which these defects occur is unknown, but some evidence suggest that redox disruption may play a role. Cellular redox state is important in regulating key processes during neural tube closure, including differentiation, proliferation, gene expression, and apoptosis. This study aims to determine whether redox potential shifts and these key processes …

Background
Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections have many negative health outcomes (e.g., diarrhea, nutritional deficiencies) that can also exacerbate poverty. These infections are generally highest among low-income populations, many of which are also undergoing market integration (MI; increased participation in a market-based economy). Yet the direct impact of MI-related social and environmental changes on STH infection patterns is poorly understood, making it unclear which lifestyle factors should be targeted to better control disease spread. This cross-sectional study examines if household infrastructure associated with greater MI is associated with lower STH burdens among Indigenous Ecuadorian Shuar.

Compressed-Sensing Based Up-Sampling Method For Fluid Simulation, Yijing Qian, Xubo Yang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In computer fluid animation, the grid-based Euler method is a well-matured and effective way of simulating fluids, but a key bottleneck of Euler method is that it is limited to the traditional Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem in sampling step. So it cannot effectively reduce the massive data and computing of the large-scale flow fields. In order to solve this problem, compressed sensing theory was used to probe a way to break through the limitation of the sampling theorem in fluid simulation. The sparsity and compressibility of fluid data were explored, then applicable sampling function, compressive basis and reconstruction algorithm for …
