Emergency Department "Bounce-Back" Rates As A Function Of Emergency Medicine Training Year., Janine Curcio, Andrew Little, Chelsea Bolyard, Anand Gupta, Michelle Secic, Meenal Sharkey

OhioHealth Research Institute Articles

INTRODUCTION: Since the 1990s, the emergency department (ED) unscheduled return visit (URV), or "bounce-back," has been used as a quality of care measurement. During that time, resident training was also scrutinized and uncovered a need for closer resident supervision, especially of second-year residents. Over the years, bounce-backs have continued to be analyzed with vigor, but research on residency training and supervision has lagged with few studies concurrently investigating residency supervision and bounce-backs. Other literature on resident supervision suggests that with adequate attending supervision, resident performance is equivalent to attending performance. With that in mind, it was hypothesized that resident bounce-back …

Automated Interactive 3d Geospatial Data Assimilation, Formatting And Visualization System For Development Of Subsurface Conceptual Site Models, Aaron Cattley, Gavin Hudgeons, Bruce Lee

SMU Data Science Review

The natural evolution of the collection and storage of sub- surface data in Texas has resulted in the current state where data for certain resources, such as water resources, have not been assimilated with state oil and gas and injection data in a meaningful way that allows for rapid understanding and data analysis for a physical land site. The consequences that result due to data from different spheres not being in sync are often duplication of work being performed but not in a consistent manner. However, the reality is that the infrastructure and impacts of these sectors are deeply intertwined. …

Time Series Analysis Of Offshore Buoy Light Detection And Ranging (Lidar) Windspeed Data, Aditya Garapati, Charles J. Henderson, Carl Walenciak, Brian T. Waite

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, modeling techniques for the forecasting of wind speed using historical values observed by Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensors in an offshore context are described. Both univariate time series and multivariate time series modeling techniques leveraging meteorological data collected simultaneously with the LIDAR data are evaluated for potential contributions to predictive ability. Accurate and timely ability to predict wind values is essential to the effective integration of wind power into existing power grid systems. It allows for both the management of rapid ramp-up / down of base production capacity due to highly variable wind power inputs and …

Landscape-Scale Interactions Between Pastures, Crops, Trees And Cattle In Savanna Grassland Systems, Carsten Marohn Sep 2020

Landscape-Scale Interactions Between Pastures, Crops, Trees And Cattle In Savanna Grassland Systems, Carsten Marohn

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Conversion of rangelands into cropland has been promoted for agricultural intensification of up to 400 million ha land in the Guinea Savannah. Realistic assessment of potential environmental and socio-economic side-effects is difficult as large areas, changing climate, soil, hydrological, plant, animal and human aspects need to be considered. The predominant cattle grazing systems on pasture under Acacias are complex including herd mobility in the landscape. Interactions between soils, plants and animals include plant reactions to grazing (resprouting, resource allocation), effects of pasture quality on animal nutrition and subsequently of manure quality on soil fertility. Herders design management strategies to cope …

Bryophyte Diversity Is Related To Vascular Plant Diversity And Microhabitat Under Disturbance In Karst Caves, Hai Ren, Faguo Wang, Wen Ye, Qianmei Zhang, Taotao Han, Yao Huang, Guowei Chu, Dafeng Hui, Qinfeng Guo

Biology Faculty Research

Plant diversity, habitat properties, and their relationships in karst caves remain poorly understood. We surveyed vascular plant and bryophyte diversities and measured the habitat characteristics in six karst caves in south China with different disturbance histories (one had been disturbed by poultry feeding, three had been disturbed by tourism, and two were undisturbed). The plant diversity differences among the six caves were analyzed using cluster analysis, and the relationships of plant diversity and microhabitat were assessed using canonical correspondence analysis. We found a total of 43 angiosperm species from 27 families, 20 lycophyte and fern species from 9 families, and …

Tonic And Phasic Amperometric Monitoring Of Dopamine Using Microelectrode Arrays In Rat Striatum, Martin Lundblad, David A. Price, Jason J. Burmeister, Jorge E. Quintero, Peter Huettl, Francois Pomerleau, Nancy R. Zahniser, Greg A. Gerhardt

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Here we report a novel microelectrode array recording approach to measure tonic (resting) and phasic release of dopamine (DA) in DA-rich areas such as the rat striatum and nucleus accumbens. The resulting method is tested in intact central nervous system (CNS) and in animals with extensive loss of the DA pathway using the neurotoxin, 6-hydroxyDA (6-OHDA). The self-referencing amperometric recording method employs Nafion-coated with and without m-phenylenediamine recording sites that through real-time subtraction allow for simultaneous measures of tonic DA levels and transient changes due to depolarization and amphetamine-induced release. The recording method achieves low-level measures of both tonic and …

Neurotropic Lineage Iii Strains Of Listeria Monocytogenes Disseminate To The Brain Without Reaching High Titer In The Blood, Taylor E. Senay, Jessica L. Ferrell, Filip G. Garrett, Taylor M. Albrecht, Jooyoung Cho, Katie L. Alexander, Tanya Myers-Morales, Olivia F. Grothaus, Sarah E. F. D'Orazio

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Listeria monocytogenes is thought to colonize the brain using one of three mechanisms: direct invasion of the blood-brain barrier, transportation across the barrier by infected monocytes, and axonal migration to the brain stem. The first two pathways seem to occur following unrestricted bacterial growth in the blood and thus have been linked to immunocompromise. In contrast, cell-to-cell spread within nerves is thought to be mediated by a particular subset of neurotropic L. monocytogenes strains. In this study, we used a mouse model of foodborne transmission to evaluate the neurotropism of several L. monocytogenes isolates. Two strains preferentially colonized the brain …

"The Best Medicine": Supporting Patient-Centered Care With Personal Pet Visitation During Hospitalization, Heather Abrahim Sep 2020

"The Best Medicine": Supporting Patient-Centered Care With Personal Pet Visitation During Hospitalization, Heather Abrahim

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Many hospitals in the United States and Canada allow personal pets to visit patients. Little evidence exists in the literature to support this practice aside from anecdotal evidence and opinion pieces. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore how hospitalized patients describe their experience of personal pet visitation.
