Microbial contamination and biofilm formation are serious challenges in water filtration applications. Recently, carbon nanocomposite membranes with modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted much attention as compelling water purification membranes that can deactivate pathogenic bacteria and prevent biofilm formation. However, the effective attachment of AgNPs onto such carbon-based surfaces has proven difficult to accomplish via inexpensive and rapid fabrication processes. In this study, we introduce a simple laser-assisted process that enables rapid surface functionalization and immobilization of AgNPs onto carbon cloth membrane surfaces comprised of woven carbon micro fibers. The laser functionalization provides a unique modification in surface morphology of …

Studying physiologic stress responses can assist in understanding the welfare of animals. One method of measuring the physiologic stress response is evaluating concentrations of glucocorticoid metabolites in feces. Previously, using an adrenocorticotropic hormone challenge, we found fecal glucocorticoid metabolite levels were a reliable indicator of physiologic stress response in coyotes (Canis latrans). We determine whether glucocorticoid metabolite concentrations remain stable when collecting feces over a 2-week period, a timeframe commonly used in scat surveys for wild canids. We collected feces from 6 captive coyotes maintained at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wildlife Services, National Wildlife Research Center, Predator …

Brain metastasis (BrM) remains a significant cause of cancer-related mortality in epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive (ERBB2+) breast cancer (BC) patients. We proposed here that a combination treatment of irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitor neratinib (NER) and the c-MET inhibitor cabozantinib (CBZ) could prevent brain metastasis. To address this, we first tested the combination treatment of NER and CBZ in the brain-seeking ERBB2+ cell lines SKBrM3 and JIMT-1-BR3, and in ERBB2+ organoids that expressed the c-MET/ERBB1 axis. Next, we developed and characterized an orthotopic mouse model of spontaneous BrM and evaluated the therapeutic effect of CBZ and …

Introduction Rates of mental health concerns among college students are rising. A recent World Health Organization Survey of ~14,000 students revealed clinically concerning scores on anxiety, depression and substance use disorder for 31% [2][3]. With these high levels of clinically concerning scores in college students, great amounts of stress are the result, which have been negatively correlated with greater feelings of loneliness and lower hedonic well-being (satisfaction in life), without proper social support [6][10]. We explored potential mental health benefits of canine companions in the college setting by collecting psychosocial measures from both dog-owners and non-dog-owners assessing their levels of …

The Nature Of Standing, Matthew I. Hall, Christian Turner
The Nature Of Standing, Matthew I. Hall, Christian Turner
Scholarly Works
Standing to raise a claim before a judicial tribunal is notoriously contested. Federal courts during the last century developed an increasingly rule-like and rigid doctrine around the concept of private injury to govern access to the federal forum. Some states followed the federal lead. Others have created important exceptions, and even in federal courts, issues like organizational standing, legislative standing, and standing of qui tam relators have proved controversial. We describe a broader taxonomy of agenda control rules, of which standing rules are a special case, to understand why and how courts and other institutions govern their choices of what …

Cathedrals Of The Mind: Theological Method And Speculative Renewal In Trinitarian Theology, Ryan Hemmer
Cathedrals Of The Mind: Theological Method And Speculative Renewal In Trinitarian Theology, Ryan Hemmer
Dissertations (1934 -)
The aim of this work is twofold. First, it labors to retrieve from the past a normative account of speculative theological method, in protest of the anti-speculative fashions and attitudes that have prevailed among theologians since the Second Vatican Council. Second, and in tension with the first aim, this study outlines the respects in which conciliar and post-conciliar developments in history, anthropology, philosophy, and cultural analysis—the same developments that led to speculative theology’s fall from favor—are the means by which speculative theology might be renewed and made useful in theology today. The second chapter squares up to speculative theology’s critics …
The Role Of System Xc- In Cognition: The Importance Of Neuron-Astrocyte Signaling, Evan Michael Hess
The Role Of System Xc- In Cognition: The Importance Of Neuron-Astrocyte Signaling, Evan Michael Hess
Dissertations (1934 -)
The biological basis of human intelligence is largely a mystery, but likely required evolutionary adaptations to achieve the information processing capacity needed to expand the complexity of cognition among species. The link between evolutionary expansion of signaling complexity in the brain and cognition has largely focused on neuronal mechanisms, in part because information processing has historically been attributed to these cells. However, astrocytes are emerging as a second type of brain cell that is capable of processing information due to their capacity to release glutamate and, thereby, regulate neural circuits. Hence, a modern question is whether astrocytes contributed to the …
Inquiry And Provocation: The Use Of Ambiguity In Sixteenth-Century English Political Satire, Jason James Zirbel
Inquiry And Provocation: The Use Of Ambiguity In Sixteenth-Century English Political Satire, Jason James Zirbel
Dissertations (1934 -)
Nearly all literary theories for a millennium have defined satire according to its linguistic clarity and moral certainty. Not until recently have theorists such as Dustin Griffin recognized that satire often comprises an ambiguity that moves it beyond the mere policing of established moral boundaries. This project considers how four sixteenth-century satirists—Thomas Wyatt, George Gascoigne, Thomas Deloney, and Thomas Nashe—exploited satire’s capacity for open-ended inquiry to address the rapid political and economic changes that typified the early modern period. Rather than relying on established moral codes to domesticate uncertainty, these writers used satire to explore and analyze government bureaucratization, the …
Design Of Novel Experiments And Analyses For Head And Spine Trauma Biomechanics, John Robert Humm
Design Of Novel Experiments And Analyses For Head And Spine Trauma Biomechanics, John Robert Humm
Dissertations (1934 -)
Previous biomechanics research studies have used both whole-body and isolated postmortem human surrogate experiments to define human injury tolerances, advance safety in injury producing environments, and promulgate standards for design of injury mitigating systems. Recent developments in transportation and sports-related fields have led to an increasing need to determine tolerances for combined loading (multi-axis) scenarios. This dissertation demonstrates the efficacy of the novel experimental design and analysis to head and spine trauma in these modalities. The first topic was the design of a novel experiment to examine the effect oblique loading on the tension tolerance of the lumbar spine. To …
Chronic Variable Stress Induces Avolition And Disrupts Corticoaccumbens Encoding Of Approach Cues, Mitchell Spring
Chronic Variable Stress Induces Avolition And Disrupts Corticoaccumbens Encoding Of Approach Cues, Mitchell Spring
Dissertations (1934 -)
Disorders in the ability to process, evaluate, and interact with rewards are hallmarks of a range of mental illnesses. Such disorders are multi-faceted and arise from altered activity throughout diffuse brain regions. Chronic variable stress (CVS) is an oft-used tool for modeling reward-related disorders in preclinical research because it impairs the function of multiple brain regions and causes a range of severe hedonic and motivational deficits. While much research has focused on the former, the latter is poorly characterized. A panel of behavioral tests was used to characterize the effect of CVS exposure on different facets of reward related behaviors …
Study Of Techniques To Enhance The Performance Of Concrete Members Strengthened By Externally Bonded Composite Materials, Zhao Wang
Dissertations (1934 -)
External bonding of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials has been widely recognized as a popular technique for strengthening concrete structures. To find advanced strategies to improve the bond behavior of externally bonded composites strengthened concrete, three major tasks were conducted in this study: experimental work, finite element (FE) analysis, and reliability analysis. The mechanical properties and the deterioration due to water absorption of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) epoxy composites with different contents of CNFs were tested through uniaxial tensile test. According to the tensile test results, adding CNFs could significantly enhance the tensile behavior for epoxy resin. Because adding proper …
Deep Learning For Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Reconstruction, Juan Liu
Deep Learning For Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Reconstruction, Juan Liu
Dissertations (1934 -)
Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that estimates tissue magnetic susceptibility from Larmor frequency offset measurements. The generation of QSM requires solving ill-posed background field removal (BFR) and field-to-source inversion problems. Incorrect BFR often introduces erroneous local field outputs and subsequently affects susceptibility quantification accuracy. Inaccurate field-to-source inversion often causes large susceptibility estimation errors that appear as streaking artifacts in the QSM, especially in massive hemorrhagic regions. Because current QSM techniques struggle to generate reliable QSM, the clinical translation of QSM is greatly hindered. Recently, deep learning (DL) has achieved state-of-the-art performance in many computer …
Validation And Application Of A Novel Target-Based Whole-Cell Screen To Identify Antifungal Compounds, Christian Alexander Dejarnette
Validation And Application Of A Novel Target-Based Whole-Cell Screen To Identify Antifungal Compounds, Christian Alexander Dejarnette
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Traditional approaches to drug discovery are inefficient and have several key limitations that constrain our capacity to rapidly identify and develop novel experimental therapeutics. To address this, we have devised a second-generation target-based whole-cell screening assay based on the principles of competitive fitness, which can rapidly identify target-specific and physiologically-active compounds. Briefly, strains expressing high, intermediate, and low levels of a preselected target protein were constructed, tagged with spectrally distinct fluorescent proteins (FPs), and mixed together. The pooled strains were then grown in the presence of various small molecules, and the relative growth of each strain within the mixed culture …

Gene Expression Responses Of Larval Gopher (Sebastes Carnatus) And Blue (S. Mystinus) Rockfish To Ocean Acidification And Hypoxia, Jacoby Baker
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Global climate change is driving shifts in ocean chemistry, which combined with intensification of coastal upwelling, reduces ocean pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) content in the nearshore habitats of the California Current System. Physiological plasticity, within and across generations, might be especially important for long-lived, late-to-mature species, like rockfishes (genus Sebastes), that may be unable to keep pace with climate change via genetic adaptation. Rockfishes exhibit matrotrophic viviparity and may be able to buffer their offspring from environmental stress through early developmental exposure or transgenerational plasticity (non-genetic inheritance of phenotypes). In this study, mature female gopher (S. carnatus …

Paying For The Privilege Of Punishment: Reinterpreting Excessive Fines Clause Doctrine To Allow State Prisoners To Seek Relief From Pay-To-Stay Fees, Kristen M. Haight
William & Mary Law Review
Across the country, the criminal justice system is becoming both more private and more expensive. Some prison systems have come to rely on private contractors for electronic monitoring, probation, pretrial services, and incarceration services. At the same time, criminal justice fees are exploding, including fees charged to inmates for their “room and board” while in prison. These fees, sometimes called “pay-to-stay,” are imposed at the state and county level, and how they are applied varies widely. Some take into account inmates’ ability to pay the fees, or the effect on their families. Some do not. Some only apply to prisoners …

Coordinated River Infrastructure Decisions Improve Net Social-Ecological Benefits, Samuel G. Roy, Adam Daigneault, Joseph Zydlewski, Allison Truhlar, Sean Smith, Shaleen Jain, David Hart
New Hampshire EPSCoR
We explore the social, ecological, economic, and technical dimensions of sustainable river infrastructure development and the potential benefits of coordinating decisions such as dam removal and stream crossing improvement. Dam removal is common practice for restoring river habitat connectivity and ecosystem health. However, stream crossings such as culverts are often 15 times more abundant than dams and may pose similar ecological impacts. Using multi-objective optimization for a model system of 6100 dams and culverts in Maine, USA, we demonstrate substantial benefit-cost improvements provided by coordinating habitat connectivity decisions. Benefit-cost efficiency improves by two orders of magnitude when coordinating more decisions …

Law On The Half Shell: Applying A Right-To-Farm Framework To Virginia's Aquaculture Industry, Matt Woodward, Andrew Corso
Virginia Coastal Policy Center
Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, states responded to mounting land use conflicts by enacting Right-to-Farm or “RTF” laws. These laws serve to protect farmers and other agricultural producers by shielding their operations from nuisance suits. Virginia’s RTF law has helped to resolve land use conflicts and has helped to protect an agricultural industry that is both culturally and economically vital to the state.
Commercial shellfish activity has also historically proven vital to Virginia’s unique coastal identity and economy. Further, over the last several decades, Virginia’s diverse aquaculture industry has grown, making Virginia one of the leading producers of aquacultural …
