Current Role Of Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy In The Treatment Of Intracranial Tumors, Farhan A. Mirza, Rida Mitha, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim

Neurosurgery Faculty Publications

Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is gaining popularity in the treatment of both primary and secondary intracranial tumors. The goal of LITT is to deliver thermal energy in a predictable, controlled, and minimally invasive fashion. It can be particularly valuable in patients with recurrent tumors who, due to previous radiation or surgery, may have a potentially higher risk of wound breakdown or infection with repeat craniotomy. Deep-seated lesions that are often inaccessible through open approaches (thalamus, hypothalamus, mesial basal temporal lobe, brainstem) may also be suitable targets. The experience and data published thus far on this modality is limited but …

The Status Of Northern Flying Squirrels In The Lower Peninsula Of Michigan, Phathit Renas Oct 2020

The Status Of Northern Flying Squirrels In The Lower Peninsula Of Michigan, Phathit Renas

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Being able to determine the presence of a species is imperative to proper wildlife management. This is especially true if the species is sensitive or endangered. Common methods of surveying like live trapping are invasive, labor-intensive, and often fail to give sufficient detection rates. New methods utilizing technological advancements give the opportunity to survey more effectively for species. We conducted a comparison of three trapping methods with the U.S. forest service to determine the viability of each for surveying northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus) which is a species of concern. We compared live trapping and two noninvasive techniques, camera trapping, …

Causal Explanations For The Evolution Of ‘Low Gear’ Locomotion In Insular Ruminants, Roberto Rozzi, Sara Varela, Pere Bover, Jeff M. Martin Oct 2020

Causal Explanations For The Evolution Of ‘Low Gear’ Locomotion In Insular Ruminants, Roberto Rozzi, Sara Varela, Pere Bover, Jeff M. Martin

ETSU Faculty Works

Aim: Mammals on islands often undergo remarkable evolutionary changes. The acquisition of ‘low gear’ locomotion, namely short and robust limb elements, has been typically associated with the island syndrome in large mammals and, especially, ruminants. Here we provide an investigative framework to examine biotic and abiotic selective factors hypothesized to influence evolution of this peculiar type of gait. Location: Islands worldwide. Taxon: Bovidae. Methods: We calculated response variables associated with ‘low gear’ locomotion in 21 extinct and extant insular bovids. We assembled data on the physiography of 11 islands and on life history and ecological traits of the focal taxa. …

Trauma-Centered Social Justice, Noa Ben-Asher Oct 2020

Trauma-Centered Social Justice, Noa Ben-Asher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article identifies a new and growing phenomenon in the American legal system. Many leading agendas for gender, racial, and climate justice are centered on emotional trauma as the primary injury of contemporary social injustices. By focusing on three social justice movements--#BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, and Climate Justice--the Article offers the first comprehensive diagnosis and assessment of how emotional trauma has become an engine for legal and policy social justice reforms. From a nineteenth century psychoanalytic theory about repressed childhood sexual memories that manifest in female hysteria, through extensive medicalization and classification in the twentieth century, emotional trauma has evolved and expanded …

Infectious disease outbreaks pose major threats to human health and security. Countries with robust capacities for preventing, detecting and responding to outbreaks can avert many of the social, political, economic and health system costs of such crises. The Global Health Security Index (GHS Index)—the first comprehensive assessment and benchmarking of health security and related capabilities across 195 countries—recently found that no country is sufficiently prepared for epidemics or pandemics. The GHS Index can help health security stakeholders identify areas of weakness, as well as opportunities to collaborate across sectors, collectively strengthen health systems and achieve shared public health goals. Some …

Using Informational Websites To Foster A Connection Between Outdoor Education And State Park Preservation, Amanda Eckart

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

There is no shortage in research depicting the physical, mental and social benefits that students receive when they participate in outdoor learning. However, there were many barriers preventing classroom educators from taking their lessons into local nature areas. Two of these barriers being educator’s lack of confidence teaching outside and their unfamiliarity with local state parks. This led to the creation of the research question: How can websites and blogs help educators foster a connection between outdoor education and state parks? How can this connection benefit students and state parks? The research used in an attempt to answer this question …

Elizabeth Kent’S New Tales Of Botanical Friendship, Leila Walker Oct 2020

Elizabeth Kent’S New Tales Of Botanical Friendship, Leila Walker

Publications and Research

Elizabeth Kent has been considered a rather minor figure in the Leigh Hunt circle. However, this examination of her previously unknown children’s tales illuminates how Kent’s generic crossings establish a common emphasis on observation in the realms of botany, pedagogy, and poetry while suggesting that what happens beyond the observable world might be equally generative. Taken as a whole, Kent’s work constitutes a previously unacknowledged challenge to the Cockney School’s almost fetishistic attachment to the social. The identification of New Tales brings into focus Kent’s efforts to systematize friendship through her writing and clarifies her ambiguous response to Cockney amiability.

Pandemic Profiles: Annabelle Brown And The Wisdom Of Gardening Resilience, Karen Romero

COVID-19 @ Whittier (full list of items)

As I begin talking to Annabelle Brown on what could be any forgettable October morning, she instantly reminds me of the girls I grew up with in Southern California: warm, accepting, and distinctly in touch with their own version of cool. Even through the socially strained and limited setting of zoom, Brown radiates an effortlessly kind and comfortable personality that feels familiar and genuine. This familiarity isn’t unfounded. Brown grew up on a farm in Walnut, California, a neighboring city of where I was raised.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Of Navajo Nation Water Resources In The San Juan River Basin, Nm: Utilizing Traditional Navajo Ecological Knowledge, Kirena Elana Yanibaa Tsosie

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Navajo Nation consists of 110 chapters, local government subdivisions, organized into five regional agencies. Over half of the Navajo Nation chapters have traditional names in the Navajo language that describe a local water source including springs, washes, rivers, ponds, and reservoirs. Therefore, traditional Navajo names consist of Traditional Navajo Ecological Knowledge (TNEK) and can assist in documenting water sources that can be further assessed for vulnerability and sensitivity to climate change. There are 52 Navajo Nation chapters located in the San Juan River Basin and 28 chapters have water related names. Water sources associated with place names will also …

Fish-Derived Nutrients In California Kelp Forest Ecosystems, June Shrestha Oct 2020

Fish-Derived Nutrients In California Kelp Forest Ecosystems, June Shrestha

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In marine systems, fishes excrete dissolved nutrients rich in nitrogen, which is a biolimiting nutrient essential for regulating primary production and macroalgal growth in the ocean. Often overlooked in attempts to explain variability in kelp forest productivity, relatively little is known about the magnitude of nutrients excreted by fishes and what factors may influence nutrient excretion rates. I investigated the supply of nutrients excreted by the dominant fishes (30 species representing ~85% of total fish biomass) on nearshore rocky reefs in central and southern California. Using rapid field incubations, I measured the amount of dissolved ammonium (NH4+) released per individual …
