See http://ivyspring.com/terms for full terms and conditions. Background: Metastasis accounts for 90% of cancer-associated mortality in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However, the clinical management of RCC metastasis is challenging. Lactate export is known to play an important role in cancer cell migration. This study investigated the role of heat shock protein A12A (HSPA12A) in RCC migration. Methods: HSPA12A expression was examined in 82 pairs of matched RCC tumors and corresponding normal kidney tissues from patients by immunoblotting and immunofluorescence analyses. The …

The cell cycle regulator p27Kip1 is a critical factor controlling cell number in many lineages. While its anti-proliferative effects are well-established, the extent to which this is a result of its function as a cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor or through other known molecular interactions is not clear. To genetically dissect its role in the developing corneal endothelium, we examined mice harboring two loss-of-function alleles, a null …

Mesowear Analysis Of The Tapirus Pplkensis Population From The Gray Fossil Site, Tennessee, Usa, Julia A. Schap, Joshua X. Samuels

ETSU Faculty Works

Various methods exist for measuring and analyzing dental wear patterns in mam-mals, and these patterns have been extensively studied in ungulates. Mesowear has proven useful as a method to compare large numbers of individuals, particularly fossil individuals, observe trends through time or between groups, and estimate paleoenvi-ronmental conditions. Levels of attrition (tooth-on-tooth wear) and abrasion (tooth-on-food wear) can be readily compared by observing the shape of the cusp and relative crown height of the tooth. This study uses a modified method of mesowear analysis, examining actual cusp angles of the population of Tapirus polkensis from the Gray Fossil Site, a …

Covid-19: Proposing A Ketone-Based Metabolic Therapy As A Treatment To Blunt The Cytokine Storm, Patrick C. Bradshaw, William A. Seeds, Alexandra C. Miller, Vikrant R. Mahajan, William M. Curtis Jan 2020

Covid-19: Proposing A Ketone-Based Metabolic Therapy As A Treatment To Blunt The Cytokine Storm, Patrick C. Bradshaw, William A. Seeds, Alexandra C. Miller, Vikrant R. Mahajan, William M. Curtis

ETSU Faculty Works

Human SARS-CoV-2 infection is characterized by a high mortality rate due to some patients developing a large innate immune response associated with a cytokine storm and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This is characterized at the molecular level by decreased energy metabolism, altered redox state, oxidative damage, and cell death. Therapies that increase levels of (R)-beta-hydroxybutyrate (R-BHB), such as the ketogenic diet or consuming exogenous ketones, should restore altered energy metabolism and redox state. R-BHB activates anti-inflammatory GPR109A signaling and inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome and histone deacetylases, while a ketogenic diet has been shown to protect mice from influenza virus …

Introducing An Optimization- And Explicit Runge-Kutta- Based Approach To Perform Dynamic Flux Balance Analysis, Wheaton L. Schroeder, Rajib Saha

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

in this work we introduce the generalized optimization- and explicit Runge-Kutta-based Approach (oRKA) to perform dynamic flux Balance Analysis (dfBA), which is numerically more accurate and computationally tractable than existing approaches. oRKA is applied to a four-tissue (leaf, root, seed, and stem) model of Arabidopsis thaliana, p-ath773, uniquely capturing the core-metabolism of several stages of growth from seedling to senescence at hourly intervals. Model p-ath773 has been designed to show broad agreement with published plant-scale properties such as mass, maintenance, and senescence, yet leaving reaction-level behavior unconstrainted. Hence, it serves as a framework to study the reaction-level behavior necessary for …

Analysis Of The Variability Of Project Cost And Schedule Performance In The Design-Build Environment, Yunping Liang, Baabak Ashuri, Wei Sun Jan 2020

Analysis Of The Variability Of Project Cost And Schedule Performance In The Design-Build Environment, Yunping Liang, Baabak Ashuri, Wei Sun

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Design-build (DB) projects are getting more implementations in the United States. Several studies indicate that the DB project delivery system has advantages in project cost and schedule performance. Despite having comparative advantages, DB projects are found to be far from immune from cost overruns and schedule delay in those studies. It is critical to understand the effects of various factors underpinning the cost and schedule performance of DB projects. The overall objective of this research is to utilize cluster analysis and statistical analysis to identify factors with significant potentials to describe the variability of project cost and schedule performance in …

Profitability And Corporate Social Responsibility, Alexander Kirk Jan 2020

Profitability And Corporate Social Responsibility, Alexander Kirk

Honors Theses

This project examines the relationship between net margins and measures of corporate social responsibility for the companies in the S&P 500 index. This is conducted through linear regressions of overall, environmental, social, and governance scores on net margin percentages for firms from their annual 10-K reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The corporate social responsibility measures were taken from Sustainalytics via Yahoo Finance and combined with dummy variables for Global Industry Classification Standard sectors. Results indicate very limited role in corporate social responsibility measures for predicting net margins, instead favoring sector specific variables as driving net margins to …

So What: The Justification Of Morality In Christine Korsgaard’S The Sources Of Normativity, Julian Scott Jan 2020

So What: The Justification Of Morality In Christine Korsgaard’S The Sources Of Normativity, Julian Scott

Honors Theses

Phillipa Foot once described the case of a Sudeten farm boy who, in 1944, had to choose between joining the SS and being executed (Foot 2). Perhaps it is clear that he was right to choose death rather than join such an evil organization. But if he disagreed, what are we supposed to say to him? Suppose he said that he knew the SS was evil and that joining would require him to do evil things, but when faced with the alternative of execution, why did he have to do the right thing?

This problem can be generalized: what are …

Fast Medial Axis Sampling For Use In Motion Planning, Hanglin Zhou Jan 2020

Fast Medial Axis Sampling For Use In Motion Planning, Hanglin Zhou

Honors Theses

Motion planning is a difficult but important problem in robotics. Research has tended toward approximations and randomized algorithms, like sampling-based planning. Probabilistic RoadMaps (PRMs) are one common sampling-based planning approach, but they lack safety guarantees. One main approach, Medial Axis PRM (MAPRM) addressed this deficiency by generating robot configurations as far away from the obstacles as possible, but it introduced an extensive computational burden. We present two techniques, Medial Axis Bridge and Medial Axis Spherical Step, to reduce the computational cost of sampling in MAPRM and additionally propose recycling previously computed clearance information to reduce the cost of connection in …

Fighting Back From The Brink: International Efforts To Prevent Illegal Trafficking In Endangered Species, Kara Consalo Jan 2020

Fighting Back From The Brink: International Efforts To Prevent Illegal Trafficking In Endangered Species, Kara Consalo

Journal Publications

This article advances the argument for sustainable harvesting as a broad supplement, even replacement, to the prevailing no-trade policies currently used in many countries and international organizations. It is the author’s premise that the no-trade conservation paradigm is failing to adequately prevent illegal trafficking and endangered wildlife populations are suffering catastrophic losses as a result. This article will explain the current state of prevailing no-trade regulations and efforts to stem the onslaught of illegal wildlife trafficking. The article will then explore two examples of successful sustainable farming and harvesting programs, the American alligator and the Peruvian vicuñas. After a comparison …

Cryptic Diversity Among Yazoo Darters (Percidae: Etheostoma Raneyi) In Disjunct Watersheds Of Northern Mississippi, Ken A. Sterling, Stuart V. Nielsen, Andrew J. Brown, Melvin L. Warren, Brice P. Noonan

Faculty and Student Publications

© Copyright 2020 Nasser et al. The Yazoo Darter, Etheostoma raneyi (Percidae), is an imperiled freshwater fish species endemic to tributaries of the Yocona and Little Tallahatchie rivers of the upper Yazoo River basin, in northern Mississippi, USA. The two populations are allopatric, isolated by unsuitable lowland habitat between the two river drainages. Relevant literature suggests that populations in the Yocona River represent an undescribed species, but a lack of data prevents a thorough evaluation of possible diversity throughout the range of the species. Our goals were to estimate phylogenetic relationships of the Yazoo Darter across its distribution and identify …

The Perils Of Self-Directed Iras, Kathryn Kennedy Jan 2020

The Perils Of Self-Directed Iras, Kathryn Kennedy

Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review

Individual retirement accounts were created in 1974 as tax-sheltered retirement savings for employees whose employer did not offer an employer-provided retirement vehicle. Since then, they have been used primarily as rollover vehicles, such that amounts accumulated under employer-provided retirement plans can be rolled over into an individual retirement account. This Article examines the perils involved with a rollover IRA owner decides to invest his IRA assets in non-traditional assets.

Madame Chrysanthemum’S Sisters, Elizabeth Emery Jan 2020

Madame Chrysanthemum’S Sisters, Elizabeth Emery

Department of World Languages and Cultures Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

English translation of two articles published in the newspaper Le Temps by Adolphe Brisson in April and May 1900. They are dedicated to the twelve "geishas" brought from Japan to perform at the Panorama du Tour du monde, the "sisters" of Pierre Loti's “Madame Chrysanthemum” (the model for Puccini's Madama Butterfly). Brisson's interviews with a number of figures important for Japonisme (Hayashi and Bigot, in particular) provide insights into Franco-Japanese relations in 1900 and to the living and working conditions of foreign performers at the Paris Exposition.

Self-Other Encounters And Ordeals Of Aspiration Among Young Moroccan Immigrants In Spain, Maisa C. Taha Jan 2020

Self-Other Encounters And Ordeals Of Aspiration Among Young Moroccan Immigrants In Spain, Maisa C. Taha

Department of Anthropology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

North African youth who join their parents in Spain in childhood or adolescence face challenges unlike those of the older generation. Moving through institutional spaces and processes, from public school to post-secondary training and work, first-generation youth exercise cultural and linguistic bridging capacities while facing continual challenges as representatives of a racially stigmatized minority. This article focuses on life story narratives from Moroccan young people living in the southeast municipality of El Ejido since the late 1990s to highlight how Self-Other encounters ‒ a well-established framework in Maghrebine ethnography ‒ and goals of upward mobility shape experiences of coming-of-age in …

Investigating The Relationship Between Individual Differences And Island Sensitivity, Catherine Pham, Lauren Covey, Alison Gabriele, Saad Aldosari, Robert Fiorentino Jan 2020

Investigating The Relationship Between Individual Differences And Island Sensitivity, Catherine Pham, Lauren Covey, Alison Gabriele, Saad Aldosari, Robert Fiorentino

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

It is well-attested that native speakers tend to give low acceptability ratings to sentences that involve movement from within islands, yet the source of island effects remains an active debate. The grammatical account posits that island effects result from syntactic constraints on wh-movement, whereas the resource-limitation view posits that low ratings emerge due to processing-related constraints on the parser, such that islands themselves present processing bottlenecks. The current study addresses this debate by investigating the relationship between island sensitivity and individual differences in cognitive abilities, as it has been argued that the two views make distinct predictions regarding whether a …

Age-Differential Relationships Among Dopamine D1 Binding Potential, Fusiform Bold Signal, And Face-Recognition Performance, Monroe P. Turner, Håkan Fischer, Dinesh K. Sivakolundu, Nicholas A. Hubbard, Yuguang Zhao, Bart Rypma, Lars Backman Jan 2020

Age-Differential Relationships Among Dopamine D1 Binding Potential, Fusiform Bold Signal, And Face-Recognition Performance, Monroe P. Turner, Håkan Fischer, Dinesh K. Sivakolundu, Nicholas A. Hubbard, Yuguang Zhao, Bart Rypma, Lars Backman

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Facial recognition ability declines in adult aging, but the neural basis for this decline remains unknown. Cortical areas involved in face recognition exhibit lower dopamine (DA) receptor availability and lower blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal during task performance with advancing adult age. We hypothesized that changes in the relationship between these two neural systems are related to age differences in face-recognition ability. To test this hypothesis, we leveraged positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure D1 receptor binding potential (BPND) and BOLD signal during facerecognition performance. Twenty younger and 20 older participants performed a face-recognition task during …

Mystical Yet Political: A Liberative Encounter With God Through Popular Piety, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu Jan 2020

Mystical Yet Political: A Liberative Encounter With God Through Popular Piety, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu

Theology Department Faculty Publications

Today, an increasing number of Catholics can be found in the countries of the Global South. This coincides with the pontificate of the first pope who comes from that region of the world where the prevalent expression of the Catholic faith is popular piety. Popular piety may be considered as an indispensable phenomenon in Global Catholicism. In his Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis refers to popular piety as ‘the people’s mysticism’ and calls it a ‘locus theologicus’ which demands attention especially in the contemporary Church’s mission of evangelization. This paper examines popular piety as a probable point of encounter …
