Exploring The Sublethal Effects Of Pesticide Pollution In Crayfish, Brittany Carnathan Nov 2020

Exploring The Sublethal Effects Of Pesticide Pollution In Crayfish, Brittany Carnathan

Senior Honors Theses

Freshwater systems connected to agricultural practices can be prone to having pollutants (e.g. pesticides) introduced from runoff. These pollutants can have damaging effects on the biotic community assemblages throughout these systems. Low doses of pesticides can negatively affect non-target organisms, such as macroinvertebrates, by compromising their metabolic function and overall health. This project expands on how pesticide pollution impacts freshwater ecosystems by exposing crayfish to environmentally relevant combined concentrations of three common herbicides (Atrazine, Glyphosate, and 2,4-D) and documenting sublethal effects through hepatopancreas cell counts. Results reveal negative sublethal impacts of common herbicides on crayfish, and by extension indicate the …

Rural Resentment And Lgbtq Equality, Luke A. Boso Nov 2020

Rural Resentment And Lgbtq Equality, Luke A. Boso

Florida Law Review

In 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges settled a decades-long national debate over the legality of same-sex marriage. Since Obergefell, however, local and state legislatures in conservative and mostly rural states have proposed and passed hundreds of anti-LGBTQ bills. Obergefell may have ended the legal debate over same-sex marriage, but it did not resolve the cultural divide. Many rural Americans, especially in predominately white communities, feel that they are under attack. Judicial opinions and legislation protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination are serious threats to rural dwellers because they conflict with several core tenets of rural identity: …

Reconceptualizing Criminal Justice Reform For Offenders With Serious Mental Illness, E. Lea Johnston Nov 2020

Reconceptualizing Criminal Justice Reform For Offenders With Serious Mental Illness, E. Lea Johnston

Florida Law Review

Roughly 14% of male inmates and 31% of female inmates suffer from one or more serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Policymakers and the public widely ascribe the overrepresentation of offenders with serious mental illness in the justice system to the “criminalization” of the symptoms of this afflicted population. The criminalization theory posits that the criminal justice system has served as the primary agent of social control over symptomatic individuals since the closure of state psychiatric hospitals in the 1950s and the tightening of civil commitment laws. The theory identifies untreated mental illness as …

Regulation And The Marginalist Revolution, Herbert Hovenkamp Nov 2020

Regulation And The Marginalist Revolution, Herbert Hovenkamp

Florida Law Review

The marginalist revolution in economics became the foundation for the modern regulatory State with its “mixed” economy. For the classical political economists, value was a function of past averages. Marginalism substituted forward looking theories based on expectations about firm and market performance. Marginalism swept through university economics, and by 1920 or so virtually every academic economist was a marginalist.

This Article considers the historical influence of marginalism on regulatory policy in the United States. My view is at odds with those who argue that marginalism saved capitalism by rationalizing it as a more defensible buttress against incipient socialism. While marginalism …

What If Artificial Intelligence Wrote This? Artificial Intelligence And Copyright Law, Victor M. Palace Nov 2020

What If Artificial Intelligence Wrote This? Artificial Intelligence And Copyright Law, Victor M. Palace

Florida Law Review

The increasing sophistication and proliferation of artificial intelligence has given rise to a provoking question in copyright law: Who is the copyright owner of a work created by autonomous artificial intelligence? In other words, when a machine learns, thinks, and acts without human input, and it creates a work, what person should own the copyright, if any? This Note explains why this is a pressing question and why current laws and practices fail to address the issue. It then analyzes the arguments for and against the possible choices: the artificial intelligence, the user, the programmer, the company that owns the …

Animus And Its Discontents, William D. Araiza Nov 2020

Animus And Its Discontents, William D. Araiza

Florida Law Review

The concept of “animus” has taken center stage in high-stakes constitutional rights adjudication. Both in major equal protection cases and, more recently, in litigation over President Trump’s immigration bans and religion-based denials of commercial services to lesbians and gays, animus has emerged as a favored doctrinal tool of courts committed to protecting individual rights against majoritarian oppression. Despite—or perhaps because of—its prominence, the animus concept has remained controversial. Scholars have remarked on the difficulty of uncovering animus, its tendency to inflame the culture wars, and its potential to distract attention from other doctrinal paths that might be viewed as more …

Long-Term Outcomes Of Chronic, Recreational Marijuana Use, Celia G. Imhoff

The Corinthian

As numerous variations of cannabis become increasingly legalized in the United States, a growing body of research is emerging that reveals the adverse effects of chronic, recreational, and long-term marijuana use on human mental, emotional, and social development, general cognition, and academic and career performance. Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the nation and its potency continues to rise (Atkinson, 2016; Beaver, 2010; Gilman, 2015). Addiction scientists have found an association between chronic cannabis use and slowed neurocognitive function and information processing, measurable deficits in memory, learning, motivation, attention, persistent irritability, paranoia, insomnia, anxiety disorders, depression, general …

Military Applications Of Nanotechnology, Alejandro Molestina, Karthik Raja Ravichandran, Michael N. Welleck

Student Papers in Public Policy

Over the past few decades technology has advanced significantly to better meet the needs of people who use them. The very first computer required a whole room and a significant amount of electrical power to make it work. The layperson now has access to technology that is more advanced than the onboard computer of the Mars rover and it is only the size of their hand. We have the capabilities to engineer components at the scale of a nanometer and they can contribute to more advances in technology. The applications of nanotechnology are vast, but one of the areas in …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Nowadays, data is considered as a new life force for operations of physical systems in various domains such as manufacturing, healthcare, transportations, etc. However, the hugely generated data, which mirrors the working essence of the product life cycle, is still underutilised. Digital Twin (DT), a collective representation of active and passive captured data, is a virtual counterpart of the physical resources that could help prevent effective preventive maintenance in any applied domain. Currently, lots of research is going on about the applicability of digital twin in smart IOT based manufacturing industry 4.0 environment. Still, it lacks a formal study, which …

Specific Features In Polarization Of Diffusely Reflected And Transmitted Radiation In A Medium With Finite Optical Thickness, M. M. Sobirov, J. Yu. Rozikov Nov 2020

Specific Features In Polarization Of Diffusely Reflected And Transmitted Radiation In A Medium With Finite Optical Thickness, M. M. Sobirov, J. Yu. Rozikov

Scientific-technical journal

The article theoretically studies the transfer of polarized radiation in layers of atmosphere with finite thickness, within the limits of Chandrasecar theory. The angular characteristics of the degree of polarization of reflected and transmitted radiation at excitation of the atmosphere layer by natural non-polarized solar radiation are calculated. It is shown that in the polarization characteristics of diffusely reflected solar radiation, there are also three neutral polarization points, similar in the characteristics of diffusely missed radiation.

Shipwrecked Spouses: Leukothea’S Veil And Marital Reunion In The Odyssey, David West Nov 2020

Shipwrecked Spouses: Leukothea’S Veil And Marital Reunion In The Odyssey, David West

New England Classical Journal

This article proposes a new view of the mysterious incident in which Odysseus wears Leukothea’s veil to make it safely ashore in Odyssey 5, arguing that it bears directly on one of the epic’s fundamental themes, the reunion of the hero with Penelope. Through an analysis of the traditional referentiality of the veil in the Homeric epics and of Odyssean similes associating shipwreck with family reunion, it is shown that Leukothea’s veil identifies Odysseus with Penelope while both signifying and magically effecting the recovery of chastity, and ultimately of his marriage.

Messalina’S Moveable Domus: Landscape And Memory In Annals 11, Caitlin Gillespie Nov 2020

Messalina’S Moveable Domus: Landscape And Memory In Annals 11, Caitlin Gillespie

New England Classical Journal

This article addresses the intersection between landscape, memory, and power in Messalina’s movements through Rome, as recorded in Tacitus’ Annals. Messalina’s journeys demonstrate her appropriation of spatial memory and her transgressions of gender and status, as she attempts to relocate the imperial domus to the home of Gaius Silius. Reading the imperial domus as a kind of landscape opens new avenues for interpretation. Tacitus recognizes the relationship between the imperial mother and the Palatine domus, and connects Messalina to the space itself. He thereby prompts readers to consider the fragile nature of imperial power and dynastic succession as …

Immunogenetic Association Underlying Severe Covid-19, Kendall Mccoy, Autumn Peterson, Yun Tian, Yongming Sang

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

SARS-CoV2 has caused the current pandemic of new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide. Clinical outcomes of COVID-19 illness range broadly from asymptotic and mild to a life-threatening situation. This casts uncertainties for defining host determinants underlying the disease severity. Recent genetic analyses based on extensive clinical sample cohorts using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and high throughput sequencing curation revealed genetic errors and gene loci associated with about 20% of life-threatening COVID-19 cases. Significantly, most of these critical genetic loci are enriched in two immune signaling pathways, i.e., interferon-mediated antiviral signaling and chemokine-mediated/inflammatory signaling. In line with these genetic profiling studies, …

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

The use of fuzzy logic in management tasks was primarily due to the increasing complexity of existing tasks. Fuzzy logic and management based on it are close to the principles of human thought. Fuzzy logic essentially provides effective means of displaying uncertainties and inaccuracies in the real world. The availability of mathematical means to reflect the fuzziness of the source information makes it possible to build a model of adequate reality.

Life History, Biology, Fisheries, And Management For Six Lesser Known Species Of Hammerhead Sharks (Family: Sphyrnidae), Emma M. Brennan

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Historically, sharks were not considered to be of high commercial value due to low demand and modest catch rates in comparison to bony fishes. However, with recent heightened demand for shark products, their economic value has increased profoundly, which has led to overharvesting of many species. Sharks are considered as a K-selected species, which includes life history traits such as slow growth, late maturity, few offspring, and slow reproductive rates. Given the slow intrinsic rate of increased characteristic of most species of sharks, few species can support heavy fishing pressure and are vulnerable to drastic population declines as a result …

Six Feet Of Distance Between Belonging: Expansions And Maintenance Of Citizenship During Covid-19, Johnathon Daniel Vargas Nov 2020

Six Feet Of Distance Between Belonging: Expansions And Maintenance Of Citizenship During Covid-19, Johnathon Daniel Vargas

University Honors Theses

Citizenship is the dominant 'political regime of belonging' that is coupled with rights and access to necessary material resources. This paper reviews the dimensions of citizenship, its connection to the nation-state, and analytical approaches to belonging. The review of literature is then applied to an analysis of how COVID-19 has challenged notions of citizenship by revealing maintenance strategies and enactments of belonging in Portland, Oregon and the surrounding region. This paper uses qualitative research to analyze events, communication, activities, and conditions of those who lack citizenship, mediated through local media. Data collected from the first 3 months of the COVID-19 …
