Faculty Research 2020

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major cause of dementia, disability, and death in the elderly. Despite recent advances in our understanding of the basic biological mechanisms underlying AD, we do not know how to prevent it, nor do we have an approved disease-modifying intervention. Both are essential to slow or stop the growth in dementia prevalence. While our current animal models of AD have provided novel insights into AD disease mechanisms, thus far, they have not been successfully used to predict the effectiveness of therapies that have moved into AD clinical trials. The Model Organism Development and Evaluation for Late-onset …

Sleep Deprivation And Neurological Disorders, Muhammed Bishir Nov 2020

Sleep Deprivation And Neurological Disorders, Muhammed Bishir

Brain and Mind Institute

Sleep plays an important role in maintaining neuronal circuitry, signalling and helps maintain overall health and wellbeing. Sleep deprivation (SD) disturbs the circadian physiology and exerts a negative impact on brain and behavioural functions. SD impairs the cellular clearance of misfolded neurotoxin proteins like α-synuclein, amyloid-β, and tau which are involved in major neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. In addition, SD is also shown to affect the glymphatic system, a glial-dependent metabolic waste clearance pathway, causing accumulation of misfolded faulty proteins in synaptic compartments resulting in cognitive decline. Also, SD affects the immunological and …

ETSU Faculty Works

Background. The phylum Tardigrada consists of over 1,300 species that inhabit terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments throughout the world. In terrestrial habitats they live primarily in mosses, lichens, leaf litter and soil, whereas tardigrades in freshwater and marine environments are mainly found in sediments and on aquatic plants. More than 65 species have been previously reported in the state of Tennessee, USA. Methods. Tardigrades present in moss cushions (Grimmia sp.) collected from a xerothermic habitat on the East Tennessee State University campus, Johnson City, TN, USA, were extracted, mounted on slides, identified, and counted. Additional samples of fresh dried moss …

Territorial And Extraterritorial Trigeminocardiac Reflex: A Review For The Neurosurgeon And A Type Iv Reflex Vignette, Fidias Leon-Sarmiento

All Publications

The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a complex and, sometimes, fatal event triggered by overstimulation of the trigeminal nerve (TN) and its territorial and spinal cord branches. We reviewed and compiled for the neurosurgeon key aspects of the TCR that include a novel and straightforward classification, as well as morphophysiology, pathophysiology, neuromonitoring and neuromodulation features. Further, we present intraoperative data from a patient who developed extraterritorial, or type IV, TCR while undergoing a cervical surgery. TCR complexity, severity and unwanted outcomes indicate that this event should not be underestimated or overlooked in the surgical room. Timely TCR recognition in surgical settings …

Linking Mosquito Surveillance To Dengue Fever Through Bayesian Mechanistic Modeling, Clinton B. Leach, Jennifer A. Hoeting, Kim M. Pepin, Alvaro E. Eiras, Mevin B. Hooten, Colleen T. Webb

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Our ability to effectively prevent the transmission of the dengue virus through targeted control of its vector, Aedes aegypti, depends critically on our understanding of the link between mosquito abundance and human disease risk. Mosquito and clinical surveillance data are widely collected, but linking them requires a modeling framework that accounts for the complex non-linear mechanisms involved in transmission. Most critical are the bottleneck in transmission imposed by mosquito lifespan relative to the virus’ extrinsic incubation period, and the dynamics of human immunity. We developed a differential equation model of dengue transmission and embedded it in a Bayesian hierarchical …

Student Scholarly Projects

COVID-19 is a global health emergency that originated in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. It was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020, and since then has affected more than 53,507,282 individuals and claimed the lives of more than 1,305,164 around the globe. It is a respiratory virus transmitted from person to person through airborne aerosols and droplets from infected individuals and direct contact with infected surfaces.

Numerous factors, such as socioeconomic status, population density, pre-existing health conditions, and lack of health insurance, have contributed to the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 among certain demographic groups. The COVID-19 impact ranges from …

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB; Sanfilippo syndrome B) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficiency of alpha-N-acetylglucosaminidase activity, leading to increased levels of nondegraded heparan sulfate (HS). A mouse model has been useful to evaluate novel treatments for MPS IIIB, but has limitations. In this study, we evaluated the naturally occurring canine model of MPS IIIB for the onset and progression of biochemical and neuropathological changes during the preclinical stages (onset approximately 24-30 months of age) of canine MPS IIIB disease. Even by 1 month of age, MPS IIIB dogs had elevated HS levels in brain …

Eco-Critique And Thought As A Force Of Nature, Stephanie Erev Nov 2020

Eco-Critique And Thought As A Force Of Nature, Stephanie Erev

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

It occurred to me not long ago that each time I read something new I pay special attention, without really meaning to, to how the work projects forward into a future or futures. This has been going on, I now think, for some years. Perhaps this quasi-conscious reading practice has played a part in the recalibration of my own orientations to the future, which, with every new climatic event, seem to grow dizzier and more disorganized, feeling some of the time like players in a game of musical chairs. Whether it is in relation to “All Around the Mulberry Bush” …

Factory Farming: Polluting The Environment By Supplying One Mcdonald’S At A Time, Gillian Fletcher Nov 2020

Factory Farming: Polluting The Environment By Supplying One Mcdonald’S At A Time, Gillian Fletcher

Biology Student Scholarship

A modern practice that has a negative impact on the environment that many take part in everyday without even knowing, is ‘factory farming’. ‘Factory farming’ is the practice of large-scale production of livestock or crops that are used to compensate for the exponentially growing population and the demand for ready-made meals at a low cost. This paper examines the reason for the transition from sustainable agriculture to factory farming, its environmental impacts, and what corporations are benefitting at the expense of the environment. Explanations are given to support the abolishment of such harmful and unethical practices like ‘factory farming’ in …

Statin Treatment In Specific Patient Groups: Role For Improved Cardiovascular Risk Markers, Alyssa White, Hillary R. Mishcon, John L. Redwanski, Ronald D. Hills Jr Nov 2020

Statin Treatment In Specific Patient Groups: Role For Improved Cardiovascular Risk Markers, Alyssa White, Hillary R. Mishcon, John L. Redwanski, Ronald D. Hills Jr

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Ample evidence supports the use of statin therapy for secondary prevention in patients with a history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but evidence is wanting in the case of primary prevention, low-risk individuals, and elderly adults 65+. Statins are effective in lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which has long been a target for treatment decisions. We discuss the weakening dependence between cholesterol levels and mortality as a function of age and highlight recent findings on lipoprotein subfractions and other superior markers of ASCVD risk. The efficacy of statins is compared for distinct subsets of patients based on age, diabetes, ASCVD, and …

Examining The U.S. Wars On Vietnam, Laos, And Cambodia As The Production Of Neo-Colonialism, Aiden Gregg Nov 2020

Examining The U.S. Wars On Vietnam, Laos, And Cambodia As The Production Of Neo-Colonialism, Aiden Gregg

University Honors Theses

I interrogate the colonial and neo-colonial histories of the U.S. wars on Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos within the context of racialized and gendered labor accumulation, the production of difference through violence as a legitimation of colonial extraction, and ongoing neoliberal economic coercion. I examine genocide and ecocide as interdependent processes in the production of dependency and underdevelopment. I reject a common narrative of temporal and spatial disconnection which separates the wars from current economics and examine the violences which both produce and result from an economy based on growth.

Grim Under A Compensation Variant, Aaron Davis, Aaron Davis Nov 2020

Grim Under A Compensation Variant, Aaron Davis, Aaron Davis

Honors College Theses

Games on graphs are a well studied subset of combinatorial games. Balance and strategies for winning are often looked at in these games. One such combinatorial graph game is Grim. Many of the winning strategies of Grim are already known. We note that many of these winning strategies are only available to the first player. Hoping to develop a fairer Grim, we look at Grim played under a slighlty different rule set. We develop winning strategies and known outcomes for this altered Grim. Throughout, we discuss whether our altered Grim is a fairer game then the original.
