Bovine Respiratory Disease Influences On Nutrition And Nutrient Metabolism, Clinton R. Krehbiel Jan 2020

Bovine Respiratory Disease Influences On Nutrition And Nutrient Metabolism, Clinton R. Krehbiel

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

• Inflammation caused by bovine respiratory disease (BRD) continues to be one of the greatest challenges facing beef cattle producers and feedlot managers.

• BRD results in decreased intake, daily gain, and feed efficiency in feedlot calves, decreasing growth rate and increasing required days on feed.

• Morbidity caused by BRD has been associated with decreased hot carcass weight and poor carcass characteristics.

• Acute phase protein production in the liver, initiated by proinflammatory cytokines, may shift the priority for amino acid and energy use by the host animal during periods of sickness.

• Nutrient requirements for stressed calves seem …

The majority of microbiome studies focused on understanding mechanistic relationships between the host and the microbiota have used mice and other rodents as the model of choice. However, the domestic pig is a relevant model that is currently underutilized for human microbiome investigations. In this study, we performed a direct comparison of the engraftment of fecal bacterial communities from human donors between human microbiotaassociated (HMA) piglet and mouse models under identical dietary conditions. Analysis of 16S rRNA genes using amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) revealed that with the exception of early microbiota from infants, the more mature microbiotas tested established better …

Age Related Extracellular Matrix And Interstitial Cell Phenotype In Pulmonary Valves, Shaohua Wu, Vikas Kumar, Peng Xiao, Mitchell Kuss, Jung Yul Lim, Chittibabu Guda, Jonathan Butcher, Bin Duan Jan 2020

Age Related Extracellular Matrix And Interstitial Cell Phenotype In Pulmonary Valves, Shaohua Wu, Vikas Kumar, Peng Xiao, Mitchell Kuss, Jung Yul Lim, Chittibabu Guda, Jonathan Butcher, Bin Duan

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Heart valve disease is a common manifestation of cardiovascular disease and is a significant cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. The pulmonary valve (PV) is of primary concern because of its involvement in common congenital heart defects, and the PV is usually the site for prosthetic replacement following a Ross operation. Although effects of age on valve matrix components and mechanical properties for aortic and mitral valves have been studied, very little is known about the age-related alterations that occur in the PV. In this study, we isolated PV leaflets from porcine hearts in different age groups (~ 4–6 …

The Elephant In The Room: The Often Neglected Relevance Of Speciesism In Bias Towards Ethnic Minorities And Immigrants, Melisa Choubak, Saba Safdar Jan 2020

The Elephant In The Room: The Often Neglected Relevance Of Speciesism In Bias Towards Ethnic Minorities And Immigrants, Melisa Choubak, Saba Safdar

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The area of intergroup bias and, specifically attitudes towards ethnic minorities and/or immigrants, has received a great amount of investigation by (cross-cultural) psychologists, spanning many theories and perspectives (Hewstone et al., 2002). However, one perspective rarely taken in mainstream psychology is one that acknowledges the inter-linkage of bias towards ethnic minorities and/or immigrants and that towards non-human animals (NHAs), despite relatively substantial literature outside of psychology emphasizing it (Singer, 2002). In the present paper, we draw from relevant literature outside and inside of psychology that speaks to the connectivity between attitudes towards marginalized human outgroups and NHAs, focusing on the …

Necessary And Convenient: The Effect Of Commerce And Necessary And Proper Clause Jurisprudence, Janis Olkowicz Jan 2020

Necessary And Convenient: The Effect Of Commerce And Necessary And Proper Clause Jurisprudence, Janis Olkowicz

Honors Undergraduate Theses

While reading a news article about the upcoming presidential election one day, I noticed a trend. The vast majority of political articles discuss what the federal government should do, but almost never cover what it could do. In elementary school, American children are taught that the Constitution, a 4,543-word document, is the place from which all federal power is derived; but the Constitution says nothing about the regulation of travel, narcotics, or the vast majority of other areas that affect the way we live our daily lives, so where does that power come from? After some preliminary research, I discovered …

Journeying Into The Well: An Autoethnography Of 35 Retreats Across Two Decades, E. James Baesler Jan 2020

Journeying Into The Well: An Autoethnography Of 35 Retreats Across Two Decades, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

In this autoethnography I narrate the story of my retreat experiences and spiritual practices at the Well Retreat Center over a span of two decades. The Well is both a geographical place in the Isle of Wright County in Virginia, and a metaphor for a spiritual journey into the inner Well of our being. I chronicle an amalgam of 35 retreats in one 24-hour retreat, narrating stories about: leaving home and settling in, dreaming and awakening, sunrise and sunset, walking in nature and walking the narrow path, discovering life behind a cracked door, and uncovering the mystery that lies at …

Antimicrobial Resistance And Molecular Epidemiology Of Escherichia Coli Isolated From Urban And Rural River Systems, Christopher Robert Jossart Jan 2020

Antimicrobial Resistance And Molecular Epidemiology Of Escherichia Coli Isolated From Urban And Rural River Systems, Christopher Robert Jossart

Public Health Theses

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an emerging public health issue that threatens the efficacy of antibiotic treatment for bacterial infections and human health. Sources of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment include wastewater treatment plants and animal feeding operations that discharge waste into waterways, such as rivers and streams. This retrospective descriptive study describes the presence of AMR, and specific ARGs in Escherichia coli isolates from two distinct watersheds, rural and urban, with the use of antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to detect ARGs, and multi-locus sequence typing. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed for 143 E. coli isolates, 73 …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Objective: Recently, we observed that the specialized proresolving mediator (SPM) entity resolvin D1 activates lipoxin A4/formyl peptide receptor 2 (ALX/FPR2), which facilitates cardiac healing and persistent inflammation is a hallmark of impaired cardiac repair in aging. Splenic leukocyte-directed SPMs are essential for the safe clearance of inflammation and cardiac repair after injury; however, the target of SPMs remains undefined in cardiac healing and repair. Methods: To define the mechanistic basis of ALX/FPR2 as a resolvin D1 target, ALX/FPR2-null mice were examined extensively. The systolic-diastolic heart function was assessed using echocardiography, leukocytes were phenotyped using flow cytometry, and SPMs were quantitated …

Screens, School District Employees, And Sleep: Is There A Relationship?, Mary Kay L. Bruihler Jan 2020

Screens, School District Employees, And Sleep: Is There A Relationship?, Mary Kay L. Bruihler

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Statement of the Problem

Working in a school can be stressful and about half of educators in a national survey reported less than the recommended minimum of seven hours of sleep. Smartphones and other screened devices can cause sleep loss and are becoming more prevalent. Is there a relationship between the use of screened devices and sleep among the employees of a school district?

Procedures

Employees (n=36) of a small southern Minnesota school district were given an online survey regarding their sleep habits utilizing the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), their screen time use, utilizing the Screen Time Questionnaire (STQ), …

"The Cruelest Of Ills": Irregular Practitioners, The Royal College Of Physicians, And The "French Pox," C. 1550-1630, Sarah Fischer

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The confluence of the endemization of syphilis and plague outbreaks between 1590-1630 defined the milieu of the medical marketplace in London. The irregular practitioners that treated patients with these diseases used them as a mode of self-fashioning and established themselves as credible. During this time, the Royal College of Physicians attempted to censor the medical practice of these irregulars to reinforce and establish themselves as a superior authority within the medical marketplace. The College physicians attempted to self-fashion their institution because among all of the medical professionals within London, they had the least amount of practical training with patients. The …

Exploring Artificial Intelligence-Mediated Communication (Aimc) As A Sub-Field Of Communication Studies. A Textual Examination, Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

From the book "Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication," written by John Durham Peters, we understand a notion about developing one’s destiny; people have the freedom to choose multiple paths to follow (Peters, 2012). If we reject this idea, it is also easy for people to come up with distinct explanations. Even though the meaning of the same issues might vary subject to who is interpreting them, the primary concepts can be interpreted as more or less the same. If we study these two--"artificial intelligence" and "communication"- simultaneously, we can assume some characteristics. Thus, this …
