Behavioural Immune System Responses To Coronavirus: A Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Explanation Of Conformity, Warmth Towards Others And Attitudes Towards Lockdown, Alison M. Bacon, Philip J. Corr
School of Psychology
Behavioural immune system (BIS) describes psychological mechanisms that detect cues to infectious pathogens in the immediate environment, trigger disease-relevant responses and facilitate behavioural avoidance/escape. BIS activation elicits a perceived vulnerability to disease (PVD) which can result in conformity with social norms. However, a response to superficial cues can result in aversive responses to people that pose no actual threat, leading to an aversion to unfamiliar others, and likelihood of prejudice. Pathogen-neutralizing behaviours, therefore, have implications for social interaction as well as illness behaviours and responses to health communications. In this study, we investigate how PVD influences conformity, attitudes to other …

How different KRAS variants impact tumor initiation and progression in vivo has not been thoroughly examined. We hypothesize that the ability of either KRASG12D or KRASG12V mutations to initiate tumor formation is context dependent. Amhr2-Cre mice express Cre recombinase in tissues that develop into the fallopian tubes, uterus, and ovaries. We used these mice to conditionally express either the KRASG12V/+ or KRASG12D/+ mutation. Mice with the genotype Amhr2-Cre Pten(fl/fl) KrasG12D/+(G12D mice) had abnormal follicle structures and developed low-grade serous ovarian carcinomas with 100% penetrance within 18 weeks. In contrast, mice with …

Rendering Depiction: A Case Study Of An American Sign Language/English Interpreter, Mark Halley
Journal of Interpretation
In this study, the work of an American Sign Language/English interpreter was video-recorded and then analyzed to describe the interpreter’s rendering of American Sign Language depiction from American Sign Language into spoken English and from spoken English into American Sign Language. Results indicate that interpreters navigate the complex cognitive and linguistic task of rendering various types of American Sign Language depiction between both languages. The data also suggest that syntactic input may not be the only factor in an interpreter’s decision-making processes when rendering depiction; rather pragmatic considerations appear to be a major contributing factor. This study serves as a …

Long Structures In The Holy Script Of Islam: Tweeting Of Euphonies, Hash-Tagging Of # Inchoative Senses And You-Tubing Of Edible Words, Sami Heeh
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
This evaluative paper attempts to explore the extent to which morphemes, i.e. the smallest units that carry meaning, can be incorporating in Standard Arabic. From different linguistic perspectives, the article quantifies as well as qualifies the long structures in the holy Script of Islam. The longest structure is identified as the unit of language that aggregates the verb phrase (VP) and some other noun phrases (NPs) functioning as subject and object(s) together on both the graphemic and phonemic levels. Euphonies, i.e. rules of sound concordance, are consulted. Meaning relations and values are calculated and drawn. The components of the long …
