That's Irrelephant: Children's Judgments Of Relevant And Irrelevant Animal Observations, Rebekah C Cook, Alexandra Ducloux, Allison Williams, Judith Danovitch Jan 2020

That's Irrelephant: Children's Judgments Of Relevant And Irrelevant Animal Observations, Rebekah C Cook, Alexandra Ducloux, Allison Williams, Judith Danovitch

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

Abstract:

The ability to make judgments about different kinds of evidence is an important skill for learning about science. This study investigated if children recognize how helpful relevant and irrelevant information is for evaluating biological explanations, and whether their judgments change with age. Participants were 24 7- and 8-year-olds and 26 9- and 10-year-olds. Children heard a statement about an animal's behavior. Then children heard an explanation for that behavior followed by 2 different observations. One observation was about the same animal but was irrelevant to the explanation. The other observation was about a different animal, but was relevant to …

The Impact Of Pre-Service Violent Behavior On Violence Perpetration Among Service Members., Laura K Fortin, Caroline Jalain, Viviana Andreescu, Elizabeth Grossi

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

Using the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Service Members New Soldier Study data, the present analysis tries to identify some of the factors that may explain variation in violence perpetration (physical assault) among service men. We are particularly interested in observing the lasting effect of pre-service severe violent behavior on more recent violence perpetration. The potential for violence-deterring effect of an adult institution of informal social control such as marriage will be examined as well.

Crawl Space: Driving Over The Anthropocene In A Jeep, Michael Pesses Jan 2020

Crawl Space: Driving Over The Anthropocene In A Jeep, Michael Pesses

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The automobile has long been directly and indirectly connected to human conceptions of nature, yet few studies linger with the act of driving as a practice that contributes to how nature is experienced. I argue that a more nuanced understanding of automobility is necessary for any scholars who study both social practices and environmental sustainability. Following the work of the human geographer Doreen Massey, I explore how relations between humans and non-humans, the social and the natural, ideology and practice work together to produce places specific to space and time. I also argue that American automobility is not simply transportation, …

Perfecting The Craft Of Teaching, Stephanie Nunez

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This ethnographic narrative follows my journey as a fifth grade teacher in the greater Los Angeles area. The purpose of this ethnography is to follow the development of my journey as a first-year teacher. In this ethnography, I explore my positionality and the levels of community, school, and classroom as ways to inform and improve my teaching practices as a social-justice educator. I begin this four part narrative by discussing my positionality and how it relates to my desires of becoming a teacher. Through this narrative, I was then able to conduct three case studies of students with different identities …

Symbolic Franco: Spain’S Dictator In The American Conservative Imagination, 1950-1980, Sean Patrick Buchanan Jan 2020

Symbolic Franco: Spain’S Dictator In The American Conservative Imagination, 1950-1980, Sean Patrick Buchanan

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In the postwar period in the United States, conservative political ideology shifted its primary focus from isolationism and New Deal opposition to strict anti-communism. The conservatism of the 1920s through the 1940s, under the leadership of Robert Taft, would give way to a more modern conservatism influenced by a variety of Catholic and anti-communist intellectuals. As a result of the effort to demonstrate fervent anti-communist sentiments, modern conservatives highlighted and supported anti-communist leaders and figures across the US and worldwide. One particular anti-communist leader that American conservatives openly supported was the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco.

The new catholic conservatives identified …

Ways, Proofs, And The Intelligibility Of God: Thomas Aquinas’S Five Ways As Leading Into The Intelligibility Of An Existing God, Bruce John Paolozzi Jan 2020

Ways, Proofs, And The Intelligibility Of God: Thomas Aquinas’S Five Ways As Leading Into The Intelligibility Of An Existing God, Bruce John Paolozzi

CGU Theses & Dissertations

There is some question about how to understand Thomas Aquinas’s five ways of demonstrating that God exists. Often philosophers and theologians portray Thomas as a strict Aristotelian rationalist with a strong emphasis on syllogistic epistemology. Against this view a competing existential, metaphysical, and theological understanding of the five ways has been gradually gaining ground, beginning in the early 20th century, due to the work of existential Thomists such as Etienne Gilson, Jacques Maritain, and Joseph Owen. This understanding has been expanded more recently in the work of John Wippel and others. The rise of the existential view has led to …

Said The River: The Confluence Of Ecotheology And Water, Margaret Harrington Ferris Jan 2020

Said The River: The Confluence Of Ecotheology And Water, Margaret Harrington Ferris

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Environmental water issues are increasingly in the consciousness of environmental advocates, as well as scientists and engineers. Water experts have approached water issues from a scientific and engineering framework, which has led them to preference material and technical solutions. Yet those solutions have been insufficient. The interdisciplinary field of water studies has been critical of the scientific-engineering approach. Several water scholars have posited that water issues are social-human problems first, and material-technical problems second. They call for alternative approaches that emphasize reconstructing water as a necessary precursor to formulating effective, enduring solutions to environmental water issues. Likewise, ecotheological scholars and …

Aristotle On Practical Reasoning: Perception, Reason And Action In Aristotle’S Thought, Kyu-Been Chun Jan 2020

Aristotle On Practical Reasoning: Perception, Reason And Action In Aristotle’S Thought, Kyu-Been Chun

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This study aims to clarify Aristotle’s practical reason and how his flexible but, nonetheless nonarbitrary ethical teaching works. By doing so, I hope to provide an alternative way of understanding practical reason in contradistinction to a modern view of practical reason and its assumptions about thinking through moral and political issues. In this dissertation, I argue that Aristotle’s discussion of practical reason shows that any attempts to formalize morality in the abstract are limited by the complexity of each particular situation, the variability in perception/cognition of the agent as well as a human longing that is inextricably linked to practical …

The Revealing Love Of God: A Systematic, Hermeneutic, And Phenomenological Approach To Thinking Well About The Love Of God, Daniel L. Nelson Jan 2020

The Revealing Love Of God: A Systematic, Hermeneutic, And Phenomenological Approach To Thinking Well About The Love Of God, Daniel L. Nelson

CGU Theses & Dissertations

“The medium is the message:” theological reflections on the idea that God is love. I am proposing that the idea of the self-revelational nature of God’s being functions, among other ways, rhetorically, such that the content of revelation (God’s love) determines the rhetorical mode of its communication (giving orders, inviting, begging, etc.). The three aspects of rhetoric that Kenneth Burke emphasizes in A Rhetoric of Motives—the use of identification, that it is addressed and, as such, is convincing (persuasive)—are examined in terms of revelation. Chapter one seeks to clear the way for what is commonly understood as special revelation by …

Becoming Friends Of God: Practicing Philosophy Of Religion And Theology In And For A Radical Spirit Of Individuality And Humanity, Brandon Vermilya Yarbrough Jan 2020

Becoming Friends Of God: Practicing Philosophy Of Religion And Theology In And For A Radical Spirit Of Individuality And Humanity, Brandon Vermilya Yarbrough

CGU Theses & Dissertations

We want to live well. For us, coming to live well involves learning to think well. The extent to which we can make the transition from death and misery to life and blessedness will depend on the extent to which we learn to truly think the transition. We are not free to truly opt for life unless we can truly distinguish between death and life, and we are not free to truly opt for blessedness unless we can truly distinguish between misery and blessedness. Toward these ends, we have much work to do. It is not the case that every …

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a primary agent of bovine mastitis and a source of significant economic loss for the dairy industry. We previously reported antigen-specific immune induction in the milk and serum of dairy cows following vaccination with a cholera toxin A2 and B subunit (CTA2/B) based vaccine containing the iron-regulated surface determinant A (IsdA) and clumping factor A (ClfA) antigens of S. aureus (IsdA + ClfA-CTA2/B). The goal of the current study was to assess the efficacy of this vaccine to protect against S. aureus infection after intramammary challenge. Six mid-lactation …

Formulation Development Of Curcumin-Piperine Solid Dispersion Via Hot-Melt Extrusion To Enhance Solubility And Bioavailability Of Curcumin, Abdulmajeed Althobaiti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Curcumin has been known to have a variety of biological activities in different diseases, including inflammation, cancer, and diabetes. The limited bioavailability of curcumin is due to its low solubility and extensive metabolism, rendering curcumin unusable as an oral therapeutic agent. The aim of the study is to enhance the solubility and bioavailability of curcumin by preparing curcumin-piperine solid dispersion (SD) utilizing the hot-melt extrusion technique. Three physical mixtures with different ratios were prepared as following: F1 (5% w/w piperine, 15% w/w curcumin, 80% w/w Soluplus®), F2 (10% w/w piperine, 30% w/w curcumin, 60% w/w Soluplus®), and F3 (15% w/w …

Criminalizing Asylum: Dna Testing Asylum Seekers Violates Privacy Rights, Scarlett L. Montenegro

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

Introduction.

On June 16, 2015, President Trump announced his 2016 presidential campaign and claimed that Mexicans are criminals who “[h]ave lots of problems . . . they’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists . . . It’s coming from all over . . . Latin America.” President Trump has publicly expressed his hostility towards immigrants by calling them “animals” and blaming them for drugs and gangs in the United States. While in office, President Trump tweeted that immigrants were invading the United States and suggested that “we must immediately, with no Judges or Court Cases, bring them back from …

Oxidative Stress Responses And Nutrient Starvation In Mchm Treated Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Michael C. Ayers, Zachary N. Sherman, Jennifer E. G. Gallagher

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In 2014, the coal cleaning chemical 4-methylcyclohexane methanol (MCHM) spilled into the water supply for 300,000 West Virginians. Initial toxicology tests showed relatively mild results, but the underlying effects on cellular biology were underexplored. Treated wildtype yeast cells grew poorly, but there was only a small decrease in cell viability. Cell cycle analysis revealed an absence of cells in S phase within thirty minutes of treatment. Cells accumulated in G1 over a six-hour time course, indicating arrest instead of death. A genetic screen of the haploid knockout collection revealed 329 high confidence genes required for optimal growth in MCHM. These …

Emergence Of Oscillations In A Simple Epidemic Model With Demographic Data, Meredith Greer, Raj Saha, Alex Gogliettino, Chialin Yu, Kyle Zollo-Venecek Jan 2020

Emergence Of Oscillations In A Simple Epidemic Model With Demographic Data, Meredith Greer, Raj Saha, Alex Gogliettino, Chialin Yu, Kyle Zollo-Venecek

All Faculty Scholarship

A simple susceptible–infectious–removed epidemic model for smallpox, with birth and death rates based on historical data, produces oscillatory dynamics with remarkably accurate periodicity. Stochastic population data cause oscillations to be sustained rather than damped, and data analysis regarding the oscillations provides insights into the same set of population data. Notably, oscillations arise naturally from the model, instead of from a periodic forcing term or other exogenous mechanism that guarantees oscillation: the model has no such mechanism. These emergent natural oscillations display appropriate periodicity for smallpox, even when the model is applied to different locations and populations. The model and datasets, …

Walt Whitman, White Revanchism, And The Dilemmas Of Social Criticism, Lisa Gilson Jan 2020

Walt Whitman, White Revanchism, And The Dilemmas Of Social Criticism, Lisa Gilson

All Faculty Scholarship

Readers of Whitman’s poetry have long celebrated his radical portrayal of crossing racial boundaries. Yet, as recent scholars have documented, Whitman “erased” almost all of his references to black Americans in his Reconstruction-era writings. This article argues against the standard interpretation of this erasure, contending that it was a product of a rhetorical shift, rather than of Whitman’s increasing personal prejudice toward black Americans. By tracing Whitman’s rhetorical strategy from pre– to post–Civil War periods, I show that Whitman maintained a public commitment to a racially heterogeneous democracy. What changed, I argue, was his rhetorical approach. While Whitman’s prewar poetic …

Spirituality And Servant-Leadership In Teaching Developmental Mathematics, Dan W. Royer, Amy Baize-Ward Jan 2020

Spirituality And Servant-Leadership In Teaching Developmental Mathematics, Dan W. Royer, Amy Baize-Ward

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The purpose of this article is threefold: (a) to describe how spirituality, conceptually informed by servant-leadership, manifests in our teaching practices, (b) to describe how those practices enact support and empathy, which enables our students to succeed in the technical subject of developmental mathematics, and (c) to report our perceptions of student success. We employed a duoethnographic methodology to respond to a common set of questions, highlighting our similarities and differences. In this exchange we explored the setting of our practice, noting disparities between the two-year institutions where we worked. We concluded our experiences, framed through servant-leadership, and described a …

Aquestion was asked of me by the inimitable Nike Imoru, a North Londoner raised in Nigeria, an exceptional casting director, and the first woman and person of color to gain a tenured position in the Theatre Department at Hull in the UK (when she was only twenty-eight.) The question: What is your understanding of the masculine in America? Nike’s presence is water from a deep well. Her direction elicited the following.

How To Communicate Servant-Leadership: An Exploration Of Relational Communication And Employee Outcomes, David Sloan, Alan Mikkelson, Timothy Wilkinson

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Can supervisors intentionally communicate messages that signal traits of servant-leadership and that influence organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions? Organizational supervisors are in a unique position to influence the employee experience (Myers, Seibold, & Park, 2011). A substantial body of research has documented the ability of a supervisor to influence employee attitudes such as organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions (e.g., Bliss & Fallon, 2003; Brown & Yoshioka, 2003; Epitropaki & Martin, 2005; Fleishman, 1998; Jaskyte, 2003; McColl-Kennedy & Anderson, 2005; Walumbwa & Lawler, 2003). Within organizational behavior research, servant-leadership has emerged as one of the prominent leadership …

Teaching And Learning Servantleadership In The Outdoors, Jerome Gabriel, Sydney Sklar, Jessica Monu Jan 2020

Teaching And Learning Servantleadership In The Outdoors, Jerome Gabriel, Sydney Sklar, Jessica Monu

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In the field of outdoor education a great deal of emphasis has been placed on evaluating instructional processes as they are used to develop leadership competencies (Berman & Berman, 2009; Buell, 1981; Gabriel, 2015; Green, 1981; Holladay & Sklar, 2012; Martin, Cashel, Wagstaff, & Breunig, 2006; Priest, 1984, 1986; Raiola & Sugerman, 1999). A limited body of outdoor leadership research has evaluated particular leadership frameworks, such as situational leadership theory (Hersey & Blanchard, 1981; Gabriel, 2015), to determine if leadership practices align with a particular leadership model in question. To advance professional knowledge of outdoor leadership theory and practice, the …

Robert Greenleaf’s vision of servant-leadership continues to grow, attracting leaders and organizations who resonate with its values (Ferch, Spears, McFarland, & Carey, 2015). Servantleadership scholarship furthers this vision and supports growth in a variety of ways, including: defining and clarifying the essence of servant-leadership, inspiring those who aspire to serve and lead, operationalizing theory through application to organizational settings, creating measures for servant-leadership, and reviewing and synthesizing literature (van Dierendonck, 2010).

I grew up as white, catholic, American, heterosexual male in a top 5% income household in a safe neighborhood, with some lifealtering, yet not terminal medical issues. Because of this privilege, I was able to focus on my unlimited education to the near exclusion of all else for the first two decades of my life, allowing me to fall in love with learning, with challenging intellectual discussions, with magis, and with cura personalis. Yet as my undergraduate career draws to a close, I find myself questioning how those circumstances affected what I learned, questioning if and how the self-awareness I …
