Toward A Metabolic Theory Of Life History, Joseph Robert Burger, Chen Hou, James H. Brown Dec 2019

Toward A Metabolic Theory Of Life History, Joseph Robert Burger, Chen Hou, James H. Brown

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The life histories of animals reflect the allocation of metabolic energy to traits that determine fitness and the pace of living. Here, we extend metabolic theories to address how demography and mass-energy balance constrain allocation of biomass to survival, growth, and reproduction over a life cycle of one generation. We first present data for diverse kinds of animals showing empirical patterns of variation in life-history traits. These patterns are predicted by theory that highlights the effects of 2 fundamental biophysical constraints: demography on number and mortality of offspring; and mass-energy balance on allocation of energy to growth and reproduction. These …

Discrete Structure Of The Brain Rhythms, L. Perotti, J. Devito, D. Bessis, Y. Dabaghian Dec 2019

Discrete Structure Of The Brain Rhythms, L. Perotti, J. Devito, D. Bessis, Y. Dabaghian

Faculty Publications

Neuronal activity in the brain generates synchronous oscillations of the Local Field Potential (LFP). The traditional analyses of the LFPs are based on decomposing the signal into simpler components, such as sinusoidal harmonics. However, a common drawback of such methods is that the decomposition primitives are usually presumed from the onset, which may bias our understanding of the signal’s structure. Here, we introduce an alternative approach that allows an impartial, high resolution, hands-off decomposition of the brain waves into a small number of discrete, frequency-modulated oscillatory processes, which we call oscillons. In particular, we demonstrate that mouse hippocampal LFP contain …

The Logic Behind Neural Control Of Breathing Pattern, Alona Ben-Tal, Yunjiao Wang, Maria C.A. Leite Dec 2019

The Logic Behind Neural Control Of Breathing Pattern, Alona Ben-Tal, Yunjiao Wang, Maria C.A. Leite

Faculty Publications

The respiratory rhythm generator is spectacular in its ability to support a wide range of activities and adapt to changing environmental conditions, yet its operating mechanisms remain elusive. We show how selective control of inspiration and expiration times can be achieved in a new representation of the neural system (called a Boolean network). The new framework enables us to predict the behavior of neural networks based on properties of neurons, not their values. Hence, it reveals the logic behind the neural mechanisms that control the breathing pattern. Our network mimics many features seen in the respiratory network such as the …

The Effects Of Climate On Suicide Rates In 36 Oregon Counties, Elshadai Hailu, Maria Hernandez Dec 2019

The Effects Of Climate On Suicide Rates In 36 Oregon Counties, Elshadai Hailu, Maria Hernandez

Student Scholarship - College of Business

This study looked at average temperature, amount of rainfall and amount of sunshine in all 36 Oregon counties and how they affect suicide rates. Climate information was gathered over the past 30 years and suicide rates were measured between the years 2013 and 2016. It was hypothesized that there would be a negative relationship between low temperature and suicide rates. It was also predicted that there would be a negative relationship between high temperatures and suicide rates. This study found that there was a negative relationship between average high temperature and sucide rates. It also found there is to be …

Can Oral Contraceptives Increase Antibiotic Resistance In Escherichia Coli?, Allison Helene Clatch, Leah Van Otterloo Dec 2019

Can Oral Contraceptives Increase Antibiotic Resistance In Escherichia Coli?, Allison Helene Clatch, Leah Van Otterloo

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing threats to public health. Intrinsic resistance to many antimicrobials in Gram-negative bacteria is accomplished by naturally occurring efflux pumps. Efflux pumps are transmembrane proteins that can extrude antimicrobials from bacterial cytoplasm. Efflux pumps recognize a wide range of compounds including antibiotics, antiseptics, pesticides, and hormones. The upregulation of efflux pump genes in response to increasing concentrations of substrates has shown to increase resistance to toxic substrates. We hypothesize that efflux pump substrates other than antimicrobials, such as steroid hormones, will also induce the expression of efflux pump genes and consequently increase resistance …

Over the past year, this team has designed and prototyped the first modular aerial tracking system used with Lotek systems. Students developed new technology necessary to integrate the existing USFS collars with a drone. The design is capable of adapting with the technology allowing for future development in efficiency and automation. Looking forward, this project will enable the USFS, with the aid of Cal Poly students, to better understand collared animals like the fisher, and it will continue to push for innovative ideas to not only support other animal conservation, but to provide solutions to future challenges. The National Dairy Council® New Product Competition: Developing Novel Performance Nutrition Beverage Using Dairy Protein Ingredients, Tina Truong, Patricia Lai Dec 2019

The National Dairy Council® New Product Competition: Developing Novel Performance Nutrition Beverage Using Dairy Protein Ingredients, Tina Truong, Patricia Lai

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

According to "Statista" and “GlobalData" marketing research reports, the value of U.S. Sports Nutrition Market is forecasted to reach $21 billion; 39% of American adults and an additional 36% of consumers are in the market for food and beverage products targeted towards fitness. This market project stimulates growth for the dairy industry and the domestic market demand provides reason to develop more inclusions of dairy proteins in sports nutrition products. An ambient stable, ready to drink (RTD), high protein beverage is ideal in catering towards not only the targeted group of consumers, but anyone that is looking for convenience in …

Influences Of Fiber Length On Nutrient Digestion In Leopard Tortoises (Stigmochelys Pardalis): Evaluating Titanium Dioxide As A Fecal Transit Marker, Allison G. Mullin Dec 2019

Influences Of Fiber Length On Nutrient Digestion In Leopard Tortoises (Stigmochelys Pardalis): Evaluating Titanium Dioxide As A Fecal Transit Marker, Allison G. Mullin

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Vertebrate animals lack endogenous enzymes to break down insoluble plant fiber, and therefore are dependent on symbiotic gut microbes to utilize this abundant food source. Although chemically higher in fiber, the efficacy of fiber particles in some commercial feeds, physically reduced in size during processing, has not been quantified. A concept developed for dairy cattle, physically effective fiber (peNDF) considers fiber physical characteristics that influence mastication and the biphasic nature of rumen contents (Mertens, 1997). The importance of describing fiber’s chemical and physical effects in nonruminant herbivores has also been identified (NRC, 2007). Tortoises provide unique insights into digestive processes …

Effect Of Vine Age On Performance Of Vitis Vinifera L. Cv. Zinfandel Grapes And Wines In The Central Coast Of California, Vegas Riffle, Samantha Stauch Dec 2019

Effect Of Vine Age On Performance Of Vitis Vinifera L. Cv. Zinfandel Grapes And Wines In The Central Coast Of California, Vegas Riffle, Samantha Stauch

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Typically, most winegrape cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.) are commercially planted with the expectation being economically productive for 25 years. Generally, the longer the vines are kept in production, the larger the profit margin potential. Despite the economic advantage of prolonged production at a specific vineyard site, damage and decline by the root aphid, phylloxera (Daktulospaira vitifoliae Fitch), nematodes, wood root diseases, and/or poor management practices are all factors that contribute to decreasing vineyard lifespans. In addition to the aforementioned issues, natural reproductive and vegetative decline in old vines can also contribute to this trend. As a result of the rarity, …
