The Effect Of Grape Rootstock Parentage On Non-Structural Carbohydrate Establishment Factors, Samantha Stauch Dec 2019

The Effect Of Grape Rootstock Parentage On Non-Structural Carbohydrate Establishment Factors, Samantha Stauch

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

The majority of winegrape cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.) are susceptible to damage and eventual decline by the root aphid, phylloxera, as well as various species of nematodes. Therefore, commercial winegrapes are typically grafted to hybrid crosses of North American Vitis species, which have evolved tolerance to these pest pressures. Rootstock parentage is carefully considered when making a commercial rootstock selection, as well as, the specific type of grafted plant purchased for use in vineyard establishment (green-growing, dormant). Dormant bare-rooted benchgrafts are grafted, callused, and then field grown in a nursery block row for one season before being dug up in …

Monitoring Of Rangeland Plant Compositions And Soil Surface Type On Cal Poly Grazing Pastures Using Assessment, Inventory, And Monitoring (Aim) Plots And The Newly Developed App, Landpks., Katie White, Sarah James

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

The purpose of this project was to conduct field trials to determine the ease of use, efficiency, and information content of the LandPKS app, using complete AIM plots for comparison. The LandPKS app has the potential to be widely used by public, private, and nongovernmental entities to monitor rangeland conditions. This includes places that have limited access to resources and trained staff for monitoring efforts including in countries like Kenya, Namibia and Mongolia. The group concluded that the Stick Method, the methodology used by the LandPKS app, held up comparatively to the Assessment, Inventory, Monitoring (AIM) Method. The group also …

El Laberinto De Regreso Al Pasado Hacia El Futuro: La Influencia De Borges En Beltenebros De Muñoz Molina, Tanya Romero-González

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

The present article explores the connections between Antonio Muñoz Molina's Beltenebros (1989) and Jorge Luis Borges' work. Specifically, I explore how the reappearance of the past is depicted in Muñoz Molina's novel as compared to Borges' short stories "La muerte y la brújula" and "El sur", and how these connections are embedded in wider critical discourse about memory, history and their postmodernist reinterpretations. While other critics have pointed to the connection between these two authors, my comparative analysis reveals the depth of the so-called Borges effect. Firstly, the doubling of characters and the interconnections among them suggest the necessity of …

Exploring The Need For Social Emotional Learning Programs: A New Model For Mental Health And Wellness, Karen Sarafian Dec 2019

Exploring The Need For Social Emotional Learning Programs: A New Model For Mental Health And Wellness, Karen Sarafian

Benerd College Student Articles

In their early years, children often experience a number of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) including verbal, physical, and sexual abuse; violence; neglect; poverty; and parental divorce, incarceration, and addiction (Bjrkenstam et al., 2017; Dube et al., 2001; Fuller-Thomson et al., 2014; Sarafian, 2018a). These ACEs place children at greater risk of developing academic and behavioral problems, as well as a number of mental health challenges in adolescence and adulthood (Chapman et al., 2007; Sarafian, 2018a). Committed to providing mental health education and services to those impacted by ACEs, a number of organizations are addressing ACE-related challenges within the context of …

Evolution - #0: Advanced Biological Systems, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall

Unit 1: Evolution

The first unit of Advanced Biological Systems is focused on the theory of evolution, the mechanisms of evolutionary change, and discussions of the biological species concept. We discuss briefly how biodiversity stabilizes ecosystems. A study of biological evolution is placed first in the sequence of our curriculum to establish a foundation that explains the diversity of organisms, as well as biochemical processes, and the ongoing change process we witness today. These concepts will later be utilized in our curriculum to highlight cellular and metabolic diversity, the development of cancers, the interactions of bacteria with the ecosystem of the human host, …

Evolution - #8: Ecosystem Disrupted, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall

Unit 1: Evolution

This is the culminating activity for the evolution unit. For this assignment, students must research into the impact human industry has on a small part of our world. Students have had a brief introduction to the history of the planet and the role that carbon dioxide concentration play in climate change. The role of climate and weather patterns is important in a discussion of a chosen place on the planet. Students have spent a large amount of effort in understanding evolutionary theory and mechanisms and seen it in practice as they read about speciation. With this assignment, students can synthesize …

Evolution - #2: Evolutionary Evidence And Inferences, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall

Unit 1: Evolution

The theory of evolution articulates elegantly a series of inferences from a vast collection of observations and evidence. We present some of those evidences here to stimulate in our students the sorts of scientific reasoning necessary to understand the presence and origin of diversity of life on the planet.

Evolution - #1: History Of Life, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall

Unit 1: Evolution

From the perspective of a biologist, the history of life on the Earth is a recurring story. Although details may be different, what happens today has precedence in the occurrences of the past. Two underlying ideas are vital for students to understand a modern conception of the theory of evolution. First, over long periods of time, and due to natural events, the environment of the Earth has changed, sometimes dramatically. Second, each environmental change has created more favorable conditions for some species to live and reproduce, while producing less favorable conditions for others. This first lesson in our unit on …

Evolution - #4: Genetic Drift And Founder Effect, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall Dec 2019

Evolution - #4: Genetic Drift And Founder Effect, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall

Unit 1: Evolution

Genetic drift is a term used to describe chance fluctuations in the allelic frequencies in a population over time. The effects of genetic drift tend to be very minor in large populations, but they can be quite significant in small populations. Alleles are different functional forms in which a gene might exist. Humans have two alleles, sometimes the same but sometimes different, of most of their genes. In any population, it is possible to determine the frequency of all alleles. If these alleles get passed on to the next generation at random, then we should expect to see approximately the …

Evolution - #6: Selection Simulation, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall

Unit 1: Evolution

A modern understanding of the theory of evolution revolves around the selection of certain types within a population that over long time periods eventually leads to change of the species. This descent with modification is modeled with this activity, and leads to a subsequent lesson that has students reading about research into examples of speciation.

Evolution - #5: Globin Gene Evolution, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall

Unit 1: Evolution

For this lesson, students are guided through the steps necessary to compare nucleotide and amino acid sequences available at the National Center for Biotechnology Information that is maintained by the National Institutes of Health. The lesson starts with an examination of the alpha-globin gene. Alpha-globin is one of the proteins that constitutes hemoglobin. Student look at the various sequences of this gene that have been deposited at NCBI with a goal of determining alternative forms of the gene. The lesson then broadens the scope of comparison to include members of the globin protein family. Students create a phylogenetic tree that …

Increasing Adult Annual Wellness Visits, Martha Caceres Dec 2019

Increasing Adult Annual Wellness Visits, Martha Caceres

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase adult annual wellness visits in a high-volume family practice clinic. The significance of an adult annual wellness exam is health maintenance, disease prevention, early disease detection, and management of chronic diseases. Approximately 133 million Americans are diagnosed with at least 1 chronic disease, including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, and 1 in 4 adults are diagnosed with multiple chronic diseases (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2018). In 2011, the Affordable Care Act mandated insurance companies to remove deductibles for preventative health services, relieving the financial burden of out-of-pocket expenses (Borsky et al., …

Cellular Corrosion Of Cocrmo Total Knee Implants: Understanding Underlying Mechanisms Through Retrieval Analysis And Simulated Inflammatory Conditions, Griffin Heise Dec 2019

Cellular Corrosion Of Cocrmo Total Knee Implants: Understanding Underlying Mechanisms Through Retrieval Analysis And Simulated Inflammatory Conditions, Griffin Heise

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction. Total joint arthroplasty is considered one of the most beneficial aspects of modern orthopedic surgery. Due to the increase in population, obesity rates, and medical advances, total joint replacements have become more commonplace in the United States. Recently, a unique type of damage has been investigated in cobalt-chrome (CoCr) implants that remains poorly understood and highly controversial. Originally, it was believed that this damage type was caused by inflammatory cells directly attacking the metal surface, leading to damage of the oxide layer. However, damage caused by electrocautery tools has shown identical characteristics, leading some to believe this is the …

Validation Testing Of A Synthetic Spine And Upgraded Protocol For A Biomechanical Evaluation Of A Lumbar Spinal Orthosis, Daniel Hoyer

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Low back pain (LBP) is highly prevalent in all walks of life. Standard conservative treatment methods may work for some, but others go on to have spinal injections, opioids, or surgical procedures to alleviate pain. The Distractive and Mobility-Enabling Orthosis (DMO) was developed to meet the need for a conservative, drug-free treatment method. In this research, the low back support test protocol for evaluating DMO success was upgraded with a new synthetic lumbar spine model. The latest generation of the DMO project was then evaluated using the new system in a laboratory setting and on a pilot physical therapy patient.First, …
