Characterize The Wettability Of Graphene, Shuhan Zhang, Patricia Weisensee
Characterize The Wettability Of Graphene, Shuhan Zhang, Patricia Weisensee
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
The purpose of this independent study is to continue the research on the wettability of graphene. Since all previous research were done in ambient conditions and in short period, this research filled the gaps by analyzing how the contact angle of graphene varies with respect to temperature and environment over long term. In this experiment, Wilhelmy plate method was used. A glass sample was inserted into five liquids: water, glycerol, hexadecane, diiodomethane, and ethanol glycol; the interfacial tension of each liquid was calculated from 25-85 degree celsius and a temperature-interfacial tension relationship for each liquid was derived. Afterwards, the graphene …

Lupd - Leisure Underwater Propulsion Device, James Abraham, Tanner Nordell, Holden Schmidt, Noah Trimark
Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
The main objective of this Design Project was to create a hands-free, wearable underwater propulsion device. The target consumer is leisure divers, so managing cost was important. Current products on the market do not allow divers to be hands-free while diving and are very expensive. The design process began with an interview with Josh An, a Masters Degree candidate at Washington University in St. Louis. Josh is an avid diver and wanted to see if it was possible to develop a cheap underwater jet pack for leisure diving. After multiple design concepts and mock up prototypes, our team decided on …

There are an infinite number of things I do not understand; the universe and my art are only two. There will always be a certain degree of the unknown in everything. It is an ineffable inevitability. While the search for knowledge is a noble pursuit, I do not believe we should view the unknown as something to be avoided. It is understandable that we humans view it with negative connotations. The unknown is often associated with doubt, confusion, and ignorance. In Star Trek, Captain James T. Kirk states, “the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, and irrational fear of the …

The Forgotten Sins Of Robert E. Lee: How A Confederate Icon Became An American Icon, Jennifer Page
The Forgotten Sins Of Robert E. Lee: How A Confederate Icon Became An American Icon, Jennifer Page
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
After the Civil War, Charles Sumner said of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, "hand him over to the avenging pen of history." But has history been so been so avenging to Lee? In "The Forgotten Sins of Robert E. Lee: How a Confederate Icon Became an American Icon," this thesis argues that textbooks, public memory, and popular culture have collectively obscured the historical reality of Lee. In the years following the Civil War, the complex and tangled history of Lee as a slaveholding southerner were overlooked and, in many instances, erased in an effort to reunify North and South. In …

An Open Letter To The Editor: How The Media’S Language Perpetuates Bias, Anais Nolasco
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
The ways the media portray black and white people are present in all facets of life, ranging from the coverage of crime to the perception of beauty. For instance, researchers have looked at the influence of media framing on the public’s perception of people of color (Abare, 2018). However, scholars have overlooked how the media portray black and white victims and suspects across the ideological spectrum. I argue that the discrepancies in the language surrounding suspects and victims present throughout conservative and mainstream media allow for the perpetuation of biases and stereotypes in the public mind. In order to understand …

Reply To “Democracy, Participation, And Information: Complementarity Between Political And Economic Institutions”, Christopher Wonnell
San Diego Law Review
As I see it, Thomas Christiano’s Article on democracy and complementarity has two purposes. One is to defend democracy against the charge that it cannot work because of the rational ignorance of the citizenry. The other is to propose a way of making democracy work better by changing the economic system in such a way as to give workers access to more of the information they need to become informed voters. Discussion of opinion will take place in the following pages.

Exposing The Imposter: Imposter Syndrome & Legal Writing Faculty, Sara L. Ochs
Events at Dickinson Law
Legal academics often report crippling feelings of insecurity and inadequacy, symptoms of a widespread trend labeled as “imposter syndrome.” Experts have defined this phenomenon as a “deep and sometimes paralyzing belief that we have been given something we didn’t earn and don’t deserve and that at some point we’ll be exposed.” Given the evident hierarchies in legal academia, these feelings are especially prominent among legal writing faculty, and even more so among those in untenured positions. Using empirical data acquired from law professors, this presentation will analyze the prevalence and causes of imposter syndrome among legal writing faculty and will …

ABA Standard 303 requires that a law school offer a curriculum that requires each student to satisfactorily complete at least one professional responsibility course, one upper-level writing course, and one or more experiential course(s) totaling at least six credit hours. While the same class cannot count toward more than one of these requirements, Interpretation 303-1 allows one course to count as "either as an upper-class writing requirement or as a simulation course provided the course meets all of the requirements of both types of courses and the law school permits a student to use the course to satisfy only one …

The Traditional Legal Analysis, Research, And Writing Course: Does Subject Synthesis Serve Students Best?, Anna Hemingway, Sherri Keene
The Traditional Legal Analysis, Research, And Writing Course: Does Subject Synthesis Serve Students Best?, Anna Hemingway, Sherri Keene
Events at Dickinson Law
Most law schools’ first-year curriculums include a course on legal analysis, research, and writing. At many law schools, the synthesis of these subjects into one course is considered the best way to teach first-year law students basic lawyering skills. Recently, however, law schools have begun to separate the topics into stand-alone courses. This presentation will review the different models law schools are currently using and will explore additional opportunities to remix the individual topics with other first-year courses.

In this study, Anacyclus pyrethrm Link (roots) is a medicinal plant from the Asteraceae family, endemic to Morocco and is widely used in traditional medicine; was investigated for their total phenolics, flavonoids contents and antioxidant activities. The quantitative estimation of total flavonoids and phenols by the colorimetric method showed that the extracts were prepared by fractionation of the crude hydromethanolic extract (ethyl acetate and n-butanol). The phenol content of various extracts, estimated by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, was between 1,44 and 12,82 mg EAG / g extract of A. pyrethrum. Moreover, it is clear that ethyl acetate was the …

Effect Of Incorporating Pottery And Bottom Ash As Partial Replacement Of Cement, Bassam A. Tayeh, Doha M. Alsaffar, Lawend K. Askar, Asmahan Issa Jubeh
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
This study addressed the environmental constraints in cement production. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced with pottery powder (PP, produced by grinding locally available pottery) and bottom ash (BA) at 10%, 20% and 30% of cement mass. Moreover, 4% calcium chloride solution (CaCl2.2H2O) was used as mixing water. Material properties, such as standard consistency, setting time and compressive strength, were measured with different percentages of OPC replacement with PP and BA. Results indicated that the replacement with PP and BA increased the water demand to achieve the standard consistency. These results revealed that the strength evolution …
