Labor Market Implications On The Uptake Of The Earned Income Tax Credit In New Mexico Post Great Recession: 2008-2015, James Kaminsky Dec 2019

Labor Market Implications On The Uptake Of The Earned Income Tax Credit In New Mexico Post Great Recession: 2008-2015, James Kaminsky

Economics ETDs

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is one of the most successful poverty alleviation programs in the US tax code. In New Mexico tax filers may apply for a refundable credit – the Working Family Tax Credit (WFTC) – that is predicated upon receipt of the EITC on their federal return. However, the preponderance of research examining the efficacy of the EITC is premised upon two hypotheses: economic conditions are expanding and those seeking work can find it.

Subsequent to the Great Recession, it is not clear that these hypotheses hold. The Great Recession began in Q4-2007 and continued into …

A Phenomenological Study Of Parent Experiences With Postsecondary-Admission Counseling, Anthony Espitia Dec 2019

A Phenomenological Study Of Parent Experiences With Postsecondary-Admission Counseling, Anthony Espitia

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to better understand parent experiences with the postsecondary-admission counseling of high school students in California. As a state, California exceeds the ASCA’s student-to-counselor national recommendations, impacting the delivery of postsecondary-admission counseling on high school campuses. To understand the postsecondary-admission counseling experiences in California, a qualitative phenomenological study consisting of 12 parents of current or recently graduated high school students was utilized. Open-ended interviews captured parents’ lived experiences with the postsecondary-admission counseling of California high school counselors. The data analysis for this study was accomplished by utilizing a four-step process outlined by Moustakas (1994), which …

Testing And Modeling Of The Indirect Solar Drying Of Thin Film Mangos, Olivier Montmayeur Dec 2019

Testing And Modeling Of The Indirect Solar Drying Of Thin Film Mangos, Olivier Montmayeur

Theses

In Haiti, 80% of rural people live in dire poverty living on less than a dollar a day. Cultivated and wild grown foods such as mangos and breadfruit could be used to reduce the economic and nutritional disparity for rural communities. Unfortunately in these areas there is a high amount of spoilage due to short harvesting seasons with high yields and lack of preservation options. 80% of breadfruit and 60% of mangoes are lost annually according to a local farmer’s co-op in Borgne, Haiti [1]. Based on a 2018 three-week collaborative design session with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and …

Potential Health Risks Linked To Emerging Contaminants In Major Rivers And Treated Waters, James Kessler, Diane Dawley, Daniel Crow, Ramin Garmany, Philippe T. Georgel

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

The presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in our local waterways is becoming an increasing threat to the surrounding population. These compounds and their degradation products (found in pesticides, herbicides, and plastic waste) are known to interfere with a range of biological functions from reproduction to differentiation. To better understand these effects, we used an in silico ontological pathway analysis to identify the genes affected by the most commonly detected EDCs in large river water supplies, which we grouped together based on four common functions: Organismal injuries, cell death, cancer, and behavior. In addition to EDCs, we included the opioid buprenorphine …

Identification Of Visual Attentional Regions Of The Temporoparietal Junction In Individual Subjects Using A Vivid, Novel Oddball Paradigm, Kathryn J. Devaney, Maya L. Rosen, Emily J. Levin, David C. Somers Dec 2019

Identification Of Visual Attentional Regions Of The Temporoparietal Junction In Individual Subjects Using A Vivid, Novel Oddball Paradigm, Kathryn J. Devaney, Maya L. Rosen, Emily J. Levin, David C. Somers

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

The Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ) of the cerebral cortex is a functionally heterogeneous region that also exhibits substantial anatomical variability across individuals. As a result, the precise functional organization of TPJ remains controversial. One or more regions within TPJ support visual attention processes, but the “attention TPJ” is difficult to functionally observe in individual subjects, and thus is typically identified by averaging across a large group of subjects. However, group-averaging also blurs localization and can obscure functional organization. Here, we develop and test an individual-subject approach to identifying attentional TPJ. This paradigm employs novel oddball images with a strong visual drive …

Resource Theory Of Asymmetric Distinguishability, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde Dec 2019

Resource Theory Of Asymmetric Distinguishability, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

This paper systematically develops the resource theory of asymmetric distinguishability, as initiated roughly a decade ago [Matsumoto, Reverse test and characterization of quantum relative entropy, arXiv:1010.1030]. The key constituents of this resource theory are quantum boxes, consisting of a pair of quantum states, which can be manipulated for free by means of an arbitrary quantum channel. We introduce bits of asymmetric distinguishability as the basic currency in this resource theory, and we prove that it is a reversible resource theory in the asymptotic limit, with the quantum relative entropy being the fundamental rate of resource interconversion. The distillable distinguishability is …

Resource Theory Of Asymmetric Distinguishability For Quantum Channels, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde Dec 2019

Resource Theory Of Asymmetric Distinguishability For Quantum Channels, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

This paper develops the resource theory of asymmetric distinguishability for quantum channels, generalizing the related resource theory for states [Matsumoto, arXiv:1010.1030, Wang and Wilde, Phys. Rev. Research 1, 033170 (2019)10.1103/PhysRevResearch.1.033170]. The key constituents of the channel resource theory are quantum channel boxes, consisting of a pair of quantum channels, which can be manipulated for free by means of an arbitrary quantum superchannel (the most general physical transformation of a quantum channel). One main question of the resource theory is the approximate channel box transformation problem, in which the goal is to transform an initial channel box (or boxes) to a …

Bursting The Bubble: The 1988 “Ghetto Party” And Depauw’S Problem With Diversity, James Rueff Dec 2019

Bursting The Bubble: The 1988 “Ghetto Party” And Depauw’S Problem With Diversity, James Rueff

Student Research

This paper will delve first into the background information surrounding race relations at the national level, collegiate level, and at DePauw. Next, the paper will investigate how the University started to recruit minority students and faculty as a precursor to campus culture in the 1988-89 academic year of the party and its aftermath. How white people reacted to the event will be put into conversation with Barbara Applebaum’s book, Being White, Being Good. The book tackles how and why white people believe themselves to either be non-racist or unaware of their racist actions. In tandem with The DePauw articles that …
