First In The Nation: New Hampshire’S Changing Electorate In Changing Times, Kenneth M. Johnson, Dante Scala, Andrew Smith
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Kenneth Johnson, Dante Scala, and Andrew Smith discuss demographic forces that are reshaping the New Hampshire landscape. They report that more than 20 percent of potential voters in the 2020 New Hampshire primary were either not old enough to vote in 2016 or resided somewhere other than New Hampshire. New Hampshire has one of the most mobile populations in the nation. Only one-third of New Hampshire residents age 25 and older were born in the state. Democratic presidential primary turnout in New Hampshire may hit record highs in 2020. Republican turnout, in contrast, is likely to …

Fighting On Behalf Of The Salish Sea, Cloie M. Chapman

Despite the wealth of data that suggests climate change will disrupt our ecosystems, key political actors have declined to take action to mitigate the anticipated effects. Further, we have seen deeper investment into the fossil fuel industry, an industry that has been a substantial contributor to climate change. Community-led movements have proven more successful in engaging with these issues on the ground. Creative legal strategies could aid in this movement and allow for strengthened enforcement of rights that are closely dependent on the health of the environment.
The Salish Sea is a body of water that reaches from Western Canada …

Three Ways To Help Esl Content Linger Beyond The “El Course” In Teacher Preparation Programs, Melanie Gonzalez
Journal of English Learner Education
Like many other states, our teacher preparation program arrived at this compartmentalized, “single-experience” ESL-focused course model as a result of local, state, and federal policies in the United States that have increasingly placed ELs into mainstream classrooms rather than into language and literacy development courses (de Jong, 2014). TESOL faculty might have questioned: how can everything related to effective ESL teaching be covered in one semester? The fact of the matter is that the onus on this work largely rests upon teacher candidates’ shoulders after they depart the ESL-focused course. What follows are three practices that largely have arisen …

The Heterogeneity And Change In The Urban Structure Of Metropolitan Areas In The United States, 1990–2010, Stefan Leyk, Deborah Balk, Bryan Jones, Mark R. Montgomery, Hasim Engin
Publications and Research
While the population of the United States has been predominantly urban for nearly 100 years, periodic transformations of the concepts and measures that define urban places and population have taken place, complicating over-time comparisons. We compare and combine data series of officially-designated urban areas, 1990–2010, at the census block-level within Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) with a satellite-derived consistent series on built-up area from the Global Human Settlement Layer to create urban classes that characterize urban structure and provide estimates of land and population. We find considerable heterogeneity in urban form across MSAs, even among those of similar population size, indicating …

Coding Success Through Math Intervention In An Elementary School In Rural Amish Country, Megan Brannon, Elena Novak
Journal of Computer Science Integration
Coding in the elementary classroom is a relatively new movement in K-12 education that intends to engage young people in computer science and technology-related study. Coding initiatives focus on introducing young learners to coding and developing their computational thinking abilities. Coding helps enhance problem solving, mathematics skills, and higher-order thinking. Nevertheless, educators face many challenges with teaching coding at the elementary school level, because of the newness of computer science concepts and programming languages, gaps in student mathematics knowledge, use of technology, a relatively short attention span of young students and not fully developed reasoning, logic, and inferential skills among …

Analysis Of Applied Modifications To A Cone Penetration Test-Based Lateral Spread Displacement Prediction Model, Alexander Edward Corob
Theses and Dissertations
This study set out to examine the effectiveness and reliability of six modifications to the Zhang et al. (2004) CPT-based lateral spread model. A regression analysis, distribution charts, and a discriminant analysis are performed to determine how effective the modifications are on the model. From the comparisons and statistical analysis performed in this study, application of these modifications reduces over-predictions from strain-based prediction methods. Unfortunately, the tendency to under-predict displacements on average is also increased.

Smartphone-Based Human Fatigue Detection In An Industrial Environment Using Gait Analysis, Swapnali Babasaheb Karvekar
Theses
Human fatigue due to repetitive and physically challenging jobs may result in poor performance and a Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorder (WMSD). Thus, the importance of being able to monitor fatigue to implement preventative interventions cannot be overstated. This study was designed to monitor fatigue through the development of a methodology that objectively classifies an individual’s level of fatigue in the workplace by utilizing the motion sensors embedded in smartphones. An experiment consisting of squatting tasks, primarily involving the lower extremity musculature, was conducted with 24 participants using a smartphone attached to their right shank. Using Borg’s Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) …

Effect Of Process Conditions On Feature Size Of Inkjet Printed Silver Mod Ink, Manoj Meda
Theses
Advancements in functional printing processes have demonstrated the viability of fabricating electronic circuits through deposition of electrically conductive materials. This has opened various novel avenues such as flexible and stretchable electronics that are currently beyond the capabilities of conventional subtractive manufacturing processes. Among the functional printing processes, piezoelectric drop-on-demand inkjet printing has now become of increasing interest due to its versatility. In case of the electrically conductive materials, Metal Organic Decomposition (MOD) inks stand out due to their particle free nature, which improves the jetting behavior.
The strict demand from the electronics industry necessities uniform, smooth features of high resolution …

Inadequate drug experimental data and the use of unlicensed drugs may cause adverse drug reactions, especially in pediatric populations. Every year the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves human prescription drugs for marketing. The labels associated with these drugs include information about clinical trials and drug response in pediatric population. In order for doctors to make an informed decision about the safety and effectiveness of these drugs for children, there is a need to analyze complex and often unstructured drug labels. In this work, first, an exploratory analysis of drug labels using a Natural Language Processing pipeline is performed. Second, …

Assessing Wildfire Damage From High Resolution Satellite Imagery Using Classification Algorithms, Ai-Linh Alten
Master's Projects
Wildfire damage assessments are important information for first responders, govern- ment agencies, and insurance companies to estimate the cost of damages and to help provide relief to those affected by a wildfire. With the help of Earth Observation satellite technology, determining the burn area extent of a fire can be done with traditional remote sensing methods like Normalized Burn Ratio. Using Very High Resolution satellites can help give even more accurate damage assessments but will come with some tradeoffs; these satellites can provide higher spatial and temporal resolution at the expense of better spectral resolution. As a wildfire burn area …

Background/Aims: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a technically challenging procedure rarely associated with severe postprocedure complications. Hormonal changes during pregnancy promote cholelithiasis, but there are limited clinical data available on the outcomes of ERCP in pregnant women. ERCP techniques without irradiation were recently introduced as potential alternative. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the safety of ERCP in pregnancy and to compare outcomes of radiation versus nonradiation ERCP. Materials and Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Medline/Ovid, Web of Science, and Google Scholar through April 18th, 2018 using PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines identified 27 studies reporting the …

The Body. The Art. The Psyche is a series that delves into the psyche behind doing body art. What drives an artist to manipulate another's body whether permanently or impermanently. What drives them? What they gain out of it? What are they seeking? The series has two artists; A tattoo artist who is driven by the demons of the human mind and macabre things around him; another is a henna artist who is driven by the mystical properties of henna and is inspired by the celebration of life. I have tried to draw a contrast between permanence and impermanence in …

Plastic surgery tourism has grown into a lucrative, international industry as patients travel from the US to Latin American countries for cheaper surgeries with more exaggerated results. Through our reporting, we’ve found that patients are at risk when entering a limbo between countries where insurance policies are vague or non-existent and surgeons guilty of malpractice are rarely held accountable. Complications from plastic surgeries abroad that include diseases and disfigurations leave patients
