The Crossing Of Academic Success And Extracurricular Activities In School Culture: An Educator’S Perspective, Kyle Oltman
The Crossing Of Academic Success And Extracurricular Activities In School Culture: An Educator’S Perspective, Kyle Oltman
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Many schools tend to emphasize extracurricular activities or academics in their school culture, however it is important that both school culture pillars should not just coexist but enhance each other. The objective of the research was to investigate educators’ perceptions of the role of academics in establishing the culture of a school, and the frameworks of school culture that educators feel should be in place to integrate academics and extracurricular activities. Teacher interviews were conducted to determine the role academics have in developing school culture along with the integration of academics and extracurricular activities (ECA). While there is a great …
An Exploration Of Kinesics In Black American Sign Language, Micayla Ann Whitmer
An Exploration Of Kinesics In Black American Sign Language, Micayla Ann Whitmer
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The relationship between kinesics, a sub-field of linguistics which focuses on the intersection of expressive language and nonverbal communication, and African American Vernacular English (AAVE) or Ebonics has been studied extensively; however, the existence of kinesics in Black ASL has not been studied. This study found that kinesics does in fact occur in Black ASL. In addition, this paper points out that although Black ASL has been compared with traditional or white ASL, Black ASL has yet to be extensively compared with AAVE. Data came from raw video footage collected during the Black ASL project and is available for public …

Will States Step Up In 2020? We Hope So, Darien Shanske, David Gamage
Will States Step Up In 2020? We Hope So, Darien Shanske, David Gamage
Articles by Maurer Faculty
We offer no predictions about the next year in tax, but we will offer what we hope will happen — if not next year, then soon. To paraphrase Chief Justice John Roberts, we hope that when it comes to the taxation of multinational corporations in particular, states will act more like the “separate and independent sovereigns” that they are. often rely on volatile revenue sources. More stable tax bases, like the sales tax and the property tax bases, are riddled with design flaws, from the sales tax base not including services and intangibles to the property tax failing to provide …

The Effects Of Oil Viscosity And Water Vapor Temperature On Droplet Condensation In Lubricant-Infused Surfaces, Michael Lorberg, Jianxing Sun, Patricia Weisensee
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
This experiment is meant to measure the effects of oil viscosity and water vapor temperature on the nucleation rate of droplets on lubricant-infused surfaces. To accomplish this, three different lubricants with a range of viscosities were used. Each lubricant was placed on top on a glass stage with a coating of Glaco, a superhydrophobic surface coating, to create the lubricant-infused surface. The surface was then placed on top of a cold stage in order to cool the sample. Then, hot water vapor was blown over the surface of the sample so that it could condense to form droplets on the …

Background and objectives Obtaining consistent efficacy beyond 12–24 hours with local anesthetics, including extended-release formulations, has been a challenging goal. Inflammation resulting from surgery lowers the pH of affected tissues, reducing neuronal penetration of local anesthetics. HTX-011, an investigational, nonopioid, extended-release dual-acting local anesthetic combining bupivacaine and low-dose meloxicam, was developed to reduce postsurgical pain through 72 hours using novel extended-release polymer technology. Preclinical studies and a phase II clinical trial were conducted to confirm the mechanism of action of HTX-011.
Methods In a validated postoperative pain pig model and a phase II bunionectomy trial, the analgesic effects of HTX-011, …

Dialect And Employability: Human Resource Managers' Perceptions Of African American English, Kimberly Michelsen
Dialect And Employability: Human Resource Managers' Perceptions Of African American English, Kimberly Michelsen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis addresses the question of whether different dialects can change the probability of speakers being perceived as employable. It is one of the few that takes this question away from college campuses and directly to Human Resources Managers in the workforce. Using the Matched Guise Technique, recordings of Standard American English (SAE) and African American English (AAE) were presented to forty-two HR Managers from regions across the United States. Using a series of Likert scales, the HR Managers rated the recordings on eight characteristics of employability: four focused on professional skills and four focused on human-relation skills. The study …

A Survey Of Teacher Attitude Regarding Self-Awareness And Inclusive Education Of Special Education Students, Brooke Parvi
A Survey Of Teacher Attitude Regarding Self-Awareness And Inclusive Education Of Special Education Students, Brooke Parvi
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Self-awareness is not something that develops individually or in solitude. Merriam-Webster (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2019) defines self-awareness as, “an awareness of one's own personality or individuality.” Schools have started to increase their understanding of the relevance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and have been progressively providing more training in this area to their teachers. Inclusion happens when students with disabilities to mingle and learn with typically developing students; learn from each other and experiencing social expectations together. Research has indicated that students with learning and behavior disabilities lack social and emotional skills, specifically self-awareness skills.
In this study, educators were …

The Impact Of An Unusual Name On Individual And Cultural Identity, Taisha A. Deaza
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
This thesis is devoted to personal names and depicts how names both establish and destabilize identity. The collection of research gathered in this thesis demonstrates that names play an intriguing role in the construction of our lives, selves, and placement in society. It also considers names in childhood, and how names are one of the earliest signifiers of self-recognition and gender identification. Further, this thesis shows the impact social constructs have on names and the power of names to persuade people into making certain choices. This thesis concludes by demonstrating how unusual names can exclude, stereotype, or disadvantage people.

The “Active Ingredients” Of Yin, Yang And Neutral Food And The Effect Of These Nutrients On Improving And Maintaining Health, Jingle Xu
Health and Kinesiology Theses
Chinese dietary therapy has been documented to date back at least 4000 years (Zhang, 2012). The aim of traditional Chinese dietary therapy was to maintain health by achieving the balance of Yin, cold or cool, and Yang, hot or warm, components in human bodies through having a Yin-Yang-balanced diet. Yin foods were to expel heat syndromes, such as constipation, caused by excessive Yang (heat), while Yang foods were to treat cold syndromes, such as fatigue, caused by excessive Yin (coldness). However, evidence of this food therapy phenomenon was not clear yet. The purpose of this study was to explore the …
Flood Dynamics In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Past, Present, And Future, Lumas Terence Helaire
Flood Dynamics In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Past, Present, And Future, Lumas Terence Helaire
Dissertations and Theses
The Portland area has an extensive flood history since it was founded in 1845. In the late 19th century, the Portland area was prone to flooding from snowmelt freshets (3-6 months duration) and brief winter rain or rain-on-snow events. Since that time the magnitude of spring freshets has been curtailed by 45% due to climate change, flow diversions, and reservoir management. Along with changes in hydrology, the bathymetry of the Lower Columbia River has been altered by the dredging of the navigation channel, diking, and land reclamation. To understand how these changes in hydrology and bathymetry have affected tidal and …
A Mixed Methods Analysis Of Corpus Data From Reddit Discussions Of "Gay Voice", Sara Elizabeth Mulliner
A Mixed Methods Analysis Of Corpus Data From Reddit Discussions Of "Gay Voice", Sara Elizabeth Mulliner
Dissertations and Theses
In the last decade, there have been a number of public discussions about "gay voice" and "sounding gay." These two phrases often serve as a shorthand for the belief that a listener can determine the sexuality of a speaker based on phonetic qualities found in a speaker's vocal output. However, these expressions are more accurately described as "catch-all" terms for speech that may contain features associated with non-gender conforming stances and personae. Notions about gender and sexuality could be intertwined in complicated ways in this language ideology. Investigating popular discussions of gay-sounding voices could provide information on what people are …

Effects Of Temperature On Enzyme Activity Of Aquatic Litter-Associated Fungi, Nicholas Bautz
Effects Of Temperature On Enzyme Activity Of Aquatic Litter-Associated Fungi, Nicholas Bautz
Honors Theses
The decomposition of leaf litter in aquatic ecosystems is carried out mostly by microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. Fungi, known as aquatic hyphomycetes, dominate microbial communities in the decomposition of leaf litter. These fungi produce extracellular enzymes that aid in the sequestration of carbon and nutrients and lead to the breakdown of complex plant polymers. We evaluated the effects of temperature on extracellular enzyme activity within the framework of the Metabolic Theory of Ecology (MTE). The activity of β-1,4-glucosidase and β-1,4-xylosidase was estimated fluorometrically using artificial substrate analogs. Phenol oxidase activity was estimated spectrophotometrically from oxidation of L-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine). We …
