Sensitivity Of The Global Carbonate Weathering Carbon-Sink Flux To Climate And Land-Use Change, Sibo Zeng, Zaihua Liu, Georg Kaufmann
Sensitivity Of The Global Carbonate Weathering Carbon-Sink Flux To Climate And Land-Use Change, Sibo Zeng, Zaihua Liu, Georg Kaufmann
KIP Articles
The response of carbonate weathering carbon-sink flux (CCSF) to its environmental drivers is still not well understood on the global scale. This hinders understanding of the terrestrial carbon cycle. Here, we show that there is likely to be a widespread and consistent increase in the global CCSF (ranging from + 9.8% (RCP4.5) to + 17.1% (RCP8.5)) over the period 1950–2100. In the coming years the increasing temperature might be expected to have a negative impact on carbonate weathering. However, the increasing rainfall and anticipated land-use changes will counteract this, leading to a greater CCSF. This finding has been obtained by …
Droplet Size Distribution Of Large-Scale Turbulent Oil-In-Water Jets, Michael Schlüter, Simeon Pesch
Droplet Size Distribution Of Large-Scale Turbulent Oil-In-Water Jets, Michael Schlüter, Simeon Pesch
C-IMAGE data
This dataset contains droplet size distributions (DSD) obtained from a set of experiments visualizing large-scale turbulent oil in water jets in a pilot plant-scale facility (700L). Flow rates, nozzle diameter, and nozzle geometry were varied in a set of 21 experiments. The droplet size distributions are measured with an endoscopic analysis technique. Various characterizations of the particle size statistics are presented along with the droplet size distributions.

Laboratory Observations Of The Behavior Of Gas-Saturated Crude Oil Droplets Rising In Seawater, Michael Schlüter, Simeon Pesch
C-IMAGE data
This dataset contains observations of the growth rate of methane-saturated oil droplets under depressurization in a counter-current flow channel filled with artificial seawater. Droplet growth rate was captured through photographic imaging with back-lit illumination, and size evaluation was processed in ImageJ. A time series of the ratio of instantaneous to initial droplet size is presented for four different experiments with different combinations of initial droplet size and pressure.

Paving The Road To College: Impacts Of Washington State Policy On Improving Equitable Participation In Dual Credit Courses, Havala Hanson
Paving The Road To College: Impacts Of Washington State Policy On Improving Equitable Participation In Dual Credit Courses, Havala Hanson
Interdisciplinary Studies
This dissertation evaluates early impacts of a state policy to increase participation in dual credit courses in Washington state through subsidizing the cost of college credits for underrepresented rural and low-income students, and through extending eligibility to earn dual credit to students in grade 10. This study evaluates both aspects of the policy, with emphasis on the impacts for underrepresented rural and low-income students, students of color, and English learners. It employs quasi-experimental designs to estimate the impact of the policy on intended outcomes. The study finds mixed early impacts of the policy. While no effects were found for students …
Answering Global Warming’S Hottest Debate: A Better Way To Tax Carbon, Saleh Husseini
Answering Global Warming’S Hottest Debate: A Better Way To Tax Carbon, Saleh Husseini
Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies
Some of you are sick of hearing about it, some of you don’t really care, and the rest of you are probably the reason the first group is sick of hearing about it, but regardless of which category you fall into, one thing is certain: climate change is real and it’s already happening. With that said, I’m moving forward under the assumption that all of us here believe in science and understand this phenomenon to be largely a result of post-industrial anthropogenic activity. In which case, reducing our emissions is the only way to prevent climate change from becoming a …

Force-Stabilizing Synergies Can Be Retained By Coordinating Sensory-Blocked And Sensory-Intact Digits, Wei Zhang, Sasha Reschechtko, Barry Hahn, Cynthia Benson, Elias Youssef
Publications and Research
The present study examined the effects of selective digital deafferentation on the multi-finger synergies as a function of total force requirement and the number of digits involved in isometric pressing. 12 healthy adults participated in maximal and sub-maximal isometric pressing tasks with or without digital anesthesia to selective digits from the right hand. Our results indicate that selective anesthesia paradigm induces changes in both anesthetized (local) and non-anesthetized (non-local) digits’ performance, including: (1) decreased maximal force abilities in both local and non-local digits; (2) reduced force share during multi-finger tasks from non-local but not local digits; (3) decreased force error-making; …

Two Makes A Couple: Fictions On Intimacy, Alyssa C. Conner, Jessica Richardson
Honors Theses
This portfolio of fictional short stories was created through the inspiration from constraints drawn from various published short stories. Constraints are a literary technique in which the writer is bound to certain elements or inspires a pattern within a work of writing. Each short story takes place in contemporary society and within the pieces, intimate moments between two individuals are explored throughout. This portfolio, through symbolic language, examines the relationship between our identities and our closest alliances, whether those are our romantic partners, platonic partners, or siblings.

Internal Medicine Faculty Patents
Primitive or progenitor hematologic cancer cells have been implicated in the early stages and development of leukemia and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders, including acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL). Interleukin-3 receptor alpha chain (IL-3Ra or CD123) is strongly expressed on progenitor hematologic cancer cells, but is virtually undetectable on normal bone marrow cells. The present invention provides methods of impairing progenitor hematologic cancer (e.g., leukemia and lymphomic) cells by selectively targeting cells expressing CD123. These methods are useful in the detection and treatment of leukemias and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders. Also provided are compounds useful …

Individual Based Modeling And Analysis Of Pathogen Levels In Poultry Chilling Process, Zachary Mccarthy, Ben Smith, Aamir Fazil, Jianhong Wu, Shawn D. Ryan, Daniel Munther
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Pathogen control during poultry processing critically depends on more enhanced insight into contamination dynamics. In this study we build an individual based model (IBM) of the chilling process. Quantifying the relationships between typical Canadian processing specifications, water chemistry dynamics and pathogen levels both in the chiller water and on individual carcasses, the IBM is shown to provide a useful tool for risk management as it can inform risk assessment models. We apply the IBM to Campylobacter spp. contamination on broiler carcasses, illustrating how free chlorine (FC) sanitization, organic load in the water, and pre-chill carcass pathogen levels affect pathogen levels …

Mechanisms have evolved to prevent errors in replication, transcription, and translation of genetic material, with translational errors occurring most frequently. Errors in protein synthesis can occur at two steps, during tRNA aminoacylation and ribosome decoding. Recent advances in protein mass spectrometry have indicated that previous reports of translational errors have potentially underestimated the frequency of these events, but also that the majority of translational errors occur during ribosomal decoding, suggesting that aminoacylation errors are evolutionarily less tolerated. Despite that interpretation, there is evidence that some aminoacylation errors may be regulated, and thus provide a benefit to the cell, while others …

Bubble Pinch-Off In Turbulence, Daniel J. Ruth, Wouter Mostert, Stephane Perrard, Luc Deike
Bubble Pinch-Off In Turbulence, Daniel J. Ruth, Wouter Mostert, Stephane Perrard, Luc Deike
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Although bubble pinch-off is an archetype of a dynamical system evolving toward a singularity, it has always been described in idealized theoretical and experimental conditions. Here, we consider bubble pinch-off in a turbulent flow representative of natural conditions in the presence of strong and random perturbations, combining laboratory experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical modeling. We show that the turbulence sets the initial conditions for pinch-off, namely the initial bubble shape and flow field, but after the pinch-off starts, the turbulent time at the neck scale becomes much slower than the pinching dynamics: The turbulence freezes. We show that the average …

Major Lower Paleozoic Horizons Of The Southern Illinois Basin, John B. Hickman
Major Lower Paleozoic Horizons Of The Southern Illinois Basin, John B. Hickman
Report of Investigations--KGS
The geology exposed at the surface in the southern Illinois Basin has been mapped in great detail by countless workers over the past century. With the exception of limited and scattered exposures in incised river valleys, the oldest rocks exposed outside of the Jessamine, Nashville, and Ozark Domes surrounding the Illinois Basin are Mississippian in age. Extensive deposits of Cambrian–Devonian sediments occur in the subsurface above crystalline basement in this region, however. All available data for the region were analyzed to produce a single, comprehensive set of interpretations. The data used in this study include 1:24,000-scale geologic quadrangle maps, oil …

Goldfish, Maryam Farahzadi
Theses
Goldfish is a film about Maryam, an 8- or 9-year-old girl whose dream is to pursue her artistic talent of painting. She encounters a problem due to the strict influence of her mother, who prevents her from fully pursuing her dreams. Each time Maryam is able to engage in painting, her world is filled with color, and her joy is clear. Maryam is however unable or unwilling to stand up for herself and make the autonomous decision to paint, until she observes the goldfish, who feels trapped and constrained in the bowl in which it is kept. Maryam falls asleep, …

Carbon Flux And Particle-Associated Microbial Remineralization Rates In The Northern Bering And Southern Chukchi Seas, Stephanie Hicks O'Daly
Carbon Flux And Particle-Associated Microbial Remineralization Rates In The Northern Bering And Southern Chukchi Seas, Stephanie Hicks O'Daly
Oceanography
It has been hypothesized that climate change will reduce the strength and episodic nature of vernal phytoplankton blooms, increase heterotrophy of microbes and zooplankton, and weaken the tight coupling between pelagic and benthic production that is characteristic of Arctic continental shelves. As a part of the Arctic Shelf Growth, Advection, Respiration, and Deposition rates measurement (ASGARD) project, I quantified sinking particle fluxes and incubated sinking particles to measure the rate of microbial respiration associated with those particles. These measurements were used to characterize the strength of the pelagic-benthic connection. After a record-breaking year of warm temperatures and low-ice conditions in …
Pairwise Comparisons Of Shrub Change Across Alpine Climates Show Heterogeneous Response To Temperature In Dall's Sheep Range, Mark Melham
Natural Resources
Encroachment of woody vegetation into alpine and high latitude systems complicates resource use for specialist wildlife species. We converted Landsat imagery to maps of percent shrub cover in alpine areas of Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) range. We then compared percent cover to interpolated climate data to infer drivers of shrub change between the 1980s and 2010s and determine if that change is occurring at different rates in climatically distinct alpine areas. We identified areas spatially interconnected by their mean July temperature intervals and compared their rates of shrub change, finding net rates of shrub growth were higher at temperatures …

Quliriuralta (Lets Keep Telling Stories): Pace Model With Traditional Yup'ik Storytelling In A Second Grade Dual Language Classroom, Irene M. Wassilie
Linguistics
This research was conducted in a setting where the students are losing their Indigenous language. It is centered around the retention and revitalization of the Yugtun language. The goal of the research was to gain insights into how second graders in a dual language enrichment school constructed meaning and focus on form in their classroom. The instructional model employed as part of this investigation is the PACE Model, which is a story-based approach to teaching grammar through focus on form with an emphasis on meaning making. The model is consistent with Indigenous oral storytelling, cultural values, traditions and expectations. The …
Response Of Major Modes Of Eastern Arctic Ocean Variability To Climate Change, Till M. Baumann
Response Of Major Modes Of Eastern Arctic Ocean Variability To Climate Change, Till M. Baumann
Atmospheric Sciences
The Arctic Ocean plays a central role in ongoing climate change, with sea ice loss being the most prominent indicator. Recent observations showed that Atlantic inflows play an increasingly important role in the demise of sea ice. This encroaching atlantification of the eastern Arctic Ocean impacts the mean state and the variability of hydrography and current dynamics throughout the basin. Among the most energetic modes of variability are the seasonal cycle and high frequency semidiurnal (∼12-hourly) dynamics in the tidal and inertial frequency band. Limited observations indicated a substantial increase of both, hydrographic seasonal cycles as well as semidiurnal current …
